"Seeing how the light is different when your house doesn't have walls anymore can be very inspiring" is easily amongst my Top 5 maker quotes now. 💜

    • @KerryBenton
      @KerryBenton 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

It's really true... almost no one gets to really see what their spaces would look like with maximal light and most of us can't visualize it really. What an absolute dream to be able to see and feel the light and ponder how to use it once the walls inevitably have to go back up.

    • @johnkelly6942
      @johnkelly6942 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

That’s the architectural challenge, how to visualize space and enclosure simultaneously.

    • @DavePlaysGaming

It's also a line that you will not hear very often at all, which makes it even better.

    • @questioner1596

I found the same quite true when there is no roof - it's amazing how much light comes in between the rafters.

LOL. It made me want to get rid of some of my walls/floors. I've already been toodling on this idea bc when I was in high school, we lived in a house that had a trap door to the basement that I used to jump through. I was thinking I wanted to do that with this house AND THEN thought, "Oh shit we need that for laundry..." AND THEN I thought "Wait it should be an actual laundry chute..." AND THEN I started watching "The Watcher" and thought "No wait it has to be a dumbwaiter..." One way or the other my floors and walls aren't getting out of this entirely whole between my own thought process and Laura LOL.

Felix really needs to be recognized for their cinematography. Today really showed off how strong those skills have developed. Changing exposure when the neon was first turned on was great. The combination of wide and close-up shots during different tasks and effectively showing both the welding and the sparks inside the fire extinguisher were well done, too. It kept things interesting without becoming artsy for artsy sake. All of these things were integral to helping tell the story and keep Laura and Felix themselves highlighted. Great job, Felix!

Laura the next injury will be an eye one if you keep using an abrasive cutting tool without eye / face protection. I did such things for 30 years until one day...

"saving a 100yo house" has turned into "rebuilding a 100yo house" good on you for not giving up; the content is a bonus! You said something a while back that I have stuck to my wall in my room and I think it applies here too "imagine a world where things are fixed one more time than they are broken" Hopefully this will be the last time for this house

Nice! ... and so much more!!
I love, respect and admire your creativity and positive approach SO SO much, Laura!
All of your videos (I've seen a lot of them and have no problem in making this absolute statement) leave all of us with something useful, and in so many ways.
How to build, how to solve problems, how to get the job done, how to change gear and direction during the ride, and how to enjoy the ride, enjoy the end result, no matter it's not at all what you had in mind when you started!!
All lessons we can use in our lives in so many ways; in our work life, our private life, regarding our choice of partner, how we raise our children, how we interact with our friends, etc. etc.
NEVER hold on to an idea, a person or a goal after you realize it's not at all what you thought it would be, and it will not make you (or anyone else) happy.
We change. And for sure our goals and our ways to get to the goals we set, change too.
And it's OKAY! Mistakes are part of life. They are learning lessons. No need to repeat the same lesson over and over AFTER you've realized they are mistakes and how to avoid making the same or similar mistakes in the future.
We have this life only, and it's too short not to find ways to enjoy every single day of it.
If you have people around you who want you to do things that don't make you happy, that make you miserable, you need to remove these people and find people who support you and want to see you happy.
And it's a lot easier to find good people when you are doing things that make you happy.
Negative people inspire us to be negative. Positive, creative, loving, caring, etc. people to be positive, creative, etc.
Your life, your choices. We're all given different tools to form and handle our life, and it's up to us to be creative and use these tools the best we can to become the best version of ourselves.
With love and respect from Pia
(60 years + a few weeks old... and damn, I wish I had taken these advice seriously 40 years, 30 years ago, 20 years ago, 10 years ago, instead of always repeating:
"There is lots of time, I'll do it, for sure, ..... later ...." )

You could put in a glass floor. It would still allow lots of light to come through while giving you the feeling of it being open. Also you wouldn’t loose any floor space

  • @cooperised

Careful with removing sections of floor - the floor joists and boards actually help tie the walls together and in some situations can be considered structural. I'm sure you know this though 🙂

Hi Laura, it's good to see you recovering from your knee-problems! One thing 'bout your idea of leaving a piece of (first) floor away to leave the view open. You might reconsider because it makes heating your house so much less efficient (warmth goes up!). As an alternative, you could keep this view open with a partial glass floor....

    Hi Laura 🙃
Your idea of leaving the ceiling open is wonderful!!!! (I believe) that isn't something that was ever done, at least in 'regular homes' 100 years ago, perhaps not until mid-century modern came in. (But that's only a guess on my part.)
I don't know if you've thought about changing the size(s) or placement of windows in the house. Clearly it will need new ones, even if only for efficiency...and because of those pesky ants.
Between opening up that space and having larger windows it would make a dramatic design statement. It could be done in the style of the house, more or less, by having the look of several windows connected together. Adding more light up & down stairs would cut down a bit on the electric bill & every bit helps.
I'm really glad you are healing as is the house.

I usually see one in one hundred bricks/pavers that have a tiny tunnel that water gets into. On the first winter the side of them will pop off a sharp little thin blade of brick and leave a very shallow crater. Going back to fix those is a constant. The pressure can be so high that it leaves the two inner surfaces black like it was blast apart with gunpowder.

I'm a geotechnical engineer (I did a focus in engineering geology and geotechnics) working for a specialty deep foundations contractor in heavy civil. I have so little idea about foundations for houses, or even residential buildings, at all!! I'm watching this like... wait you don't have to anchor your foundations to bedrock? I've focused on areas with challenging geomorphologies (landslides, expansive soils, earthquakes, etc.), so only 1 cm of movement happening in 120 years to a house that isn't even attached to it's foundation is unheard of for me! This is really interesting to me!

The open space is so great. Do not add a rail. Put a net where you can lay down and chill. Still the open space, but as well a place to hangout.

Weiter so 💪.

Hey Laura! First off, you’re an incredible maker and hilarious!! You inspire me to wanna learn how to do more things on my own and start creating more. Thanks you!!
This has probably been mentioned already, but….If you keep that opening in the flooring, you could put netting across it like a hammock. Keeps it open without having to put a railing up and makes the space functional…you can lay on it while reading.
Looking forward to the next video!!

That milling machine is a great tool. Might expand your creative thinking? I always love the possibilities of a wall-less rough framed house . but the middle of the woods might be a better place to have it. LOL!

Laura, you're so cute LOL. I live in the Catskills and was DYING to ago to the Maker thing not only to learn stuff but to meet you! I couldn't go though bc we're racing against the weather to get our super old deck resurfaced before winter so instead of meeting you, my wife and I rented a standing orbital sander and did that and made repairs all weekend. Well, hopefully you'll come back again next year. I guess it warms my heart that instead of meeting you, I toiled in fixing an old deck with rotting wood lol.

Bionic Laura! Interesting that house repairs are not done the same way with exoskeleton. Old houses I just assumed had lots of damage and were not to any new code. My grandfather said that back in the day the crap houses were gone and the good bones houses remained. Your repair is great and something needed but can’t understand the tear down repair when exoskeleton would be as strong or stronger which we do to our own body.
