      I love the mix of content, one week the house, the next a barbecue, then a tool company tour, a barbecue, mobile pub, a barbecue and sometimes you even build barbecues 🤣
      Seriously, don’t change a thing! I love it all. It would be nice to see more of Janine - you are such a lovely couple.

      It has more than a ground floor though...cannot be a bungalow by definition...in fact, it has 3 floors if I'm not mistaken...a subterranean one too 🤔

      @@iminhiding6508 you *can* have a dorma-bungalow whereby you have a room built into the roof space having a window with a flat roof sticking out of the angled roof surface, sure...but, it wouod have started life a standard ground floor only bungalow...and, following the addition of the room in the roof space still does not have an entire second floor.
      There's a UK builder's joke about how they came to be.
      It is said that, upon finding that they had ran out of bricks to build a second floor on a house, the foreman simply turned around to the builders and said 'Look, just, bung a low roof on it'

      It would have been cheaper but where is the fun in that? It even might have brought a more .... lets call that "Greta-complying" version of a house, but there's no fun in that, either, as we all know by now - the exact opposite of fun even.

      @@manfredschmalbach9023 it’s always a shame when older houses get demolished when they could be renovated.

    • @manfredschmalbach9023
      @manfredschmalbach9023 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@n0rmal953 The problem ain't the budgets. The problem is how vastly we do overtax labour compared to how extremely we do _not_ tax initial production, materials and transport in general enough. Once the actual costs of initial production and transport were taxed adequately, repair, restoration and rebuilding with local craftsmen and locally available materials and techniques would be the cheaper route to go, by far. That does just not work with the current sort of our parasitic political personell and the financialization in a profit-driven, elitist capitalism them polit-sellouts gotta keep up under any circumstances.

      Like, seriously. I know, doing it as quickly and inexpensively as possible wasn't the point of this adventure.
      But when they're finally done with the restoration, I would be interested in a comparison of cost and time invested vs a new build. I feel, TH-cam creators in general talk way too little about the costs involved in their project. Because people who watch diy content, are often interested in maybe doing something comparable themselves at some point.
      I know exactly one TH-cam creator, for example, who scrupulously documented and published, what she spent in building her own tiny house. *Super* interesting.
      But usually, people don't even give a rough estimate of the time and money invested.

I love that you don't focus on on thing, you vary your content and never make any of it boring. As for today's video, taking down the ceiling was the easy part, the cleanup is the worst part. I don't envy you doing the cleanup.

  • @nobelpreisjoe

    Something to keep in mind: Oftentimes the ceiling above the basement ist made from concrete so that the earth pressure from the walls is cancelled out across the building. So those wooden cross-beams would have to be quite tight-fitting to transfer those horizontal loads.
    If the wall parallel to the steal beams doesn't get horizontal loads from soil there would still be (the much smaller) wind loads to consider.
    TLDR: Be careful to not remove the ceilings in all the rooms at once ;)

    • @tincoandringa4630
      @tincoandringa4630 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not an engineer, but I don't think an unreinforced concrete that thin would be able to resist much pressure from the earth right? Wouldn't the concrete just buckle and crack under the slightest amount of movement? I think it's more realistic that the steel + wooden beams are responsible for all the constructive properties, and the concrete is just there as a cheap filler material. Probably it's used instead of plaster because of its better water resistance?

    • @nobelpreisjoe
      @nobelpreisjoe ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@tincoandringa4630 It did hold for a long time and than it did crack - for whatever reason.
      The horizontal loads have to go somewhere if you don't have reinforced concrete walls designed for that purpose (that wasn't yet the way to build buildings back then). So the loads go through the concrete of the ceiling.
      This is a quite common building approach for german buildings of that time period. And you sometimes only see ~8-10cm of "not very good"-concrete. Source: (I'm a Civil Engineer)
      I'm not saying this will collapse this building (which I know very little about). But it might cause some new cracks along the way...
      Just be careful not to just copy this approach without consulting someone experienced with this kind of structures first.
      Which it sounds like they did here to some extend.

    The highlight of every Sunday is Laura's new video. I think the format is perfect and leaves each week's subject a surprise. It might be an update on a long term project like the house, it might be a fun silly project like a beer dispensing bike trailer, and it might be a field trip to a tool manufacturer. The long term projects tie everything together, and the spontaneous one-video builds keep it light and varied. Its a perfect combination.

    We love your team. Some of us know the effort it takes to create these videos (works of art.) It's sad others don't understand the value of "LABOR." Things come so easily today. Few realize there are creators killing themselves to get things (material goods, entertainment, art) to consumers. This is one of the reasons why your videos are important. It demonstrates labor and making in all facets. Big/Small. Expensive/Cheap. One Day Build/Massive Project. New/Upcycled. Single person/Team. Smashing Stereotypes. All the while, being entertaining and interesting.You folks are GEIL. Mahalo for sharing! : )
