    This is the most helpful channel for Japanese learners. Real stuff, natural speech. Not basic and not an overly complicated university grammar lesson.

    I had a "bruh" moment during my first trip in Japan...
    I was eating at Spajiro, a spaghetti restaurant in Ginza, and I was so impressed with the food that I wanted to let the waitress know.
    So I confidently said "Anata no tabemono wa oishīdesu!"
    She said thank you, but with the most confused look on her face. 😂
    Only months later did I learn that "anata" shouldn't be used unless you're really, really intimate with someone.
    Oops!

    • @jevonrodgers4599
      @jevonrodgers4599 3 ปีที่แล้ว +125

      i think she was probably more confused about how u complimented her food...she was like....im just the waitress lol

    • @_syzygy_
      @_syzygy_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@jevonrodgers4599 i mean, i dont think its unusual letting the waitress know the food was delicious, like at all, most of the time theyll be the ones asking if you liked/are liking your meal and if theres anything else you need... People doing the flattering know the waitresses arent the ones doing the cooking, cmon.

    • @PeterMazur
      @PeterMazur 3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      That’s not really the case, in that situation “anata” is fine, it’s just complimenting food in Japanese is different, you could say “美味しかった” (oishikatta - it was delicious) or more commonly “ごちそうさまでした” (gochisousamadeshita - thanks for the food OR literally: it was a feast)

    • @jevonrodgers4599
      @jevonrodgers4599 3 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@_syzygy_ unfortunately you can not always directly translate english into japanese, it work doesnt that way. If you wanted to compliment the food simply say oishikatta desu, (1000`s of other ways)of course if you want to show off your japanese youd naturally think the more you say the better your japanese is which isnt the case. Native speakers usual takes the shortest route. Anata no tabemono wa oishii desu in that situation doesnt work which is why she was confused but she knew what you wanted express

    Thank you so much for the video as always!
    A lesson on って would be fantastic! I think I have a decent understanding of it now and even more so after this video but it's super common in anime, manga, games ect. When I first started viewing content in Japanese I was super confused because I only learned about it's usage as a quoting particle and I saw it literally everywhere being used in some other way I didn't understand. So a video on it would probably be super helpful to others who are early on in their learning journey like I was. Also I could always use a more nuanced understanding of it that your videos always provide. Your lessons are the best!

    The hairstyle one is so dangerous where I'm from:
    If you say "your new hairstyle looks as good as the last one" she'll say: "Then I changed it for nothing!". If you say it looks better she'll say: "Then why didn't you tell me before!"
    And if you say it looks worse, well it is a nice way to break up with her if you don't want to hurt her lol
    I think this one depends on who you are going out with at least with girls from my country.

If your friend didn’t want to go to karaoke or dinner with you and has refused to leave their house for a while and you’re worried about them, maybe you could convince them with 夕飯に行こうよ、だっていつもより一緒に食べるとうまいよ。or maybe ひとりぼっちしちゃダメだよ、一緒にいると楽しいし、行こう。

    Does all of this apply to regular friends as well? I’m a little past the “single and ready to mingle” phase of life, I’m more in the “married for 5 years…for the second time” phase of life. But if I made friends in Japan, I’d like to be able to be kind. I’m guessing a lot of this would be over the top to say to a friend though? Well, I mean, I wouldn’t say my friend was cute. But would I use the same sort of phrasing to say they are good at…baseball or golf or something?

    Great video, my gf gobbles up all of the lines and just melts like taffy thank. Everyone except これ すき だった よね
    She always points out that だった (datta) is past tense so I’m asking if she likED this (before)…which isn’t what I mean. I’m asking if she like this so これ すき だよね/ですか? (kore suki dayone/desuka) works better if you asking if she likes something (present or future tense)
