A check that big should be taken to your local IRS/treasury office. Always use the drop-box at the USPS post office, never use a local/street/building drop box.

Nothing was mentioned about check washing and that only black, non-erasable gel pens should be used to write checks. I understand that the Uni-ball 207 pens are the absolute best against check washing.

It doesn't have to be black. Uni Ball Signo blue pens work just as well.

Funny how NOTHING in ANYTHING ever gets resolved, until a news channel step in, then it's resolved within 1 month, when the person has been dealing with it over 6+ months.

use a finepoint sharpie pen and make a copy (safely) you can copy 6 checks on one copy paper and even use both sides! sharpie ink soaks in to the paper.

Sharpie ink can still be removed with chemicals. Not all gel pens are created equal either. Many are still vulnerable to bleach such as the Pilot G-2. The only pen I've found that is resistant to acetone, alcohol, and bleach is the Uni Ball Signo series. Nothing I have tried was able to remove it from paper without totally destroying it. Try it yourself and see.

😮 What banker gave that much cash and didn’t check who it was actually written to 🤦‍♂️
He finally gets his money back two years later only cause it made the news. After two years they should give him more due to inflation since the purchasing power of the dollar has dropped since then.

My guess is the check was probably “washed” and the payee changed, but this news report didn’t actually explain that.

Was this a case of check washing or alternation by a mail thief?

I get certified checks from my bank, for any amount over five hundred dollars

So what can the victim do

Don't use paper check anymore. Thieves now use banking apps, so they don't have to go inside a bank or check cashing places. So no videos of them. I've seen a video where a check was handwritten like a 4 yr old, & yet it was still cashed. Pay by credit card, or pay with Zelle, Paypal, cashapp. I think money order is still safe.

In many cases, the thief uses a synthetic identity and cannot be found.

Agreed. You’re giving all your banking information when you give checks to random people - your bank info, name, address, handwriting, signature.
