In MLB the show, when I was customizing my player, there was hundreds of different batting stances to choose from. But no Santiago casilla. I'm disappointed
The math on how many at the stadium is likely a bit off due to the location of the sampling. There would've been a higher density around the plates. However, it is still likely less then 1500.
I'd guess it's only like 15% more at max. Regardless, this is a gem of a video.

Edit: Oh. According to Google, it's when people dress up as sausage and... race eachother. Unfortunately, knowing that has just made the confusion worse.
People racing around as sausages in between innings is pretty common, because, as was said in the video, baseball just isn't that fun.
Does Miami have a sausage race, or any other kind if race? The sausage race is in Milwaukee. Washington has the Presidents race, and Pittsburgh has the pierogi race. I don't know who else has a race like that.

I’ve just watched this video for the first time, and my one conclusion is this: If Jon Bois wasn’t at SB Nation/Secret Base, he would be a hell of a stand up comedian.
I’m dead serious. Jon tells this story in a mature, adult manner. But the fact that he perfectly mixes in jokes while maintaining his stoic, deadpan, matter-of-fact demeanor actually makes this story pretty darn funny. Very clever, Jon. Well done. 👍👍
Totally deadpan punchline. Might've taken several takes to do it with a perfectly straight face; that's either dedication or insane skill depending on how long it took to get it right.
There are several reasons this channel is the only way I currently engage with sports at all but it all boils down to the quality of talent and effort behind it.
As a college student, Jon is one of my biggest inspirations when presenting for this reason exactly. If you can add just a small bit of dry, matter of fact type humor or sarcasm, your important points expressed with the same matter of fact mentality tend to land just a bit better. Something about playing everything straight rather than contrasting humor with important points lets the audience fill in the blanks for you and create their own views on emphasis.
Also, of course the massive amount of research, writing, editing, and experience on the channel helps too. If not for that effort, the style of presenting Jon usually does might come off lazy or uninspired, but because you *know* he knows his stuff and cares about what he's talking about, it just sorta clicks together.
You forgot about at least two authenticators who put the MLB stickers on game used merch as it comes off the field.
do they do that at the time and place of the game itself? that's fascinating, i would've assumed they would just wait for the end of the game or the week of games or whatever and do it then

I think the attendance numbers were inflated, but not as much as you think. The problem is the section you used to extrapolate is in what most baseball parks consider the "cheap seats". Cheap seats never sell out in a weekday game. Pretty much the only seats that sell out on the regular are the seats behind home plate and along the first base line. It's a trick used by the ball teams to make it look like there is a lot of people there for the cameras. I can't tell you how many times I have purchased cheap seats and got moved to premium seating because the crowd was a little thin. I would guess there were probably about 8,000 people there.
Also it's the ninth inning in a game where the marlins are down 3 so a bunch of people probably left

Last baseball game I attended was in San Diego for the Padres, regular season, night game.
We SUCK. And that stadium's never ever full (I'd say like 70% of the people there were just there to be social, have some beers and have the game running as a background track.)
But these guys are right... the outfield crowd had only like 50 people in it but I know there were 4K-6K people behind home plate. Nowhere NEAR a full house, but you definitely can't judge an attendance by the outfield crowd.
Heck, we were big enough to do The Wave.

I'm not a Marlins' fan. And given the fact that the attendance numbers is part of the point of the video, and he uses inherently bogus numbers to occupy a ridiculous percentage of the video talking about them, that seems about right, actually.

But idk about your math, Jon. That section showed 10 people in the outfield stands...the stands closer to the action probably had far more people. I know the Marlins average attendance sucks, but there's gotta be at least a couple thousand fans hanging around, right?
yeah, that part of it is *totally* up for debate. i'll lay out my defense here, y'all can decide what it's worth:
some folks have noted that the screenshot shows more than 10 people, so i wanna stress that i'm strictly talking about section 139, that near-rectangular little section. if someone said there were 8 people sitting there or 20, i'd believe it. i just happened to eyeball it at 10.
that's admittedly a fairly small sample, as it only represents like 2% of stadium capacity. but i don't think it's such a bad representation, because as far as how likely a section is to be populated, i figured it was about in the middle -- the sections behind home plate and near the infield would certainly be a little more populated, but the sections in the upper decks would be way emptier. even accounting for the fact that some of those sections were cordoned off for baseball purposes.
at any rate, really appreciate the alternate theories! this is fun. might be 200 paying customers there, might be 2,000.
Jon Bois attendance was just over 20k according to baseball-reference, which is usually pretty reliable. the walk was in the 9th inning and the home team was down by a few runs, so you have to think that most fans would have left their seats by this point.

For reference, there was a Marlins-Phillies game on May 31, 2017 where baseball reference reports 15,000 tickets sold for that day, but the actual number who showed up was 1,590. Which I guess means over 13,000 people paid money to...not watch the Marlins play baseball that day? The Marlins might be a money-laundering scheme.
Anyway, I'm a little more sold on your video based on this evidence. If a similar crowd of only a couple thousand showed up and 3/4's of them decided "hey we live in Florida, anywhere we could go is better than watching disinterested backups play catch", yeah, this could've actually happened.
It wasn't uncommon for a handful of games in August-September to have attendance of less than 1000 for a Marlins game.

From my experience going to some games when the phillies were in town his estimate is very generous. The behind the plate sections were maybe half full at best. Maybe 1/4 with everyone being in the first few rows. The entire upper level completely tarped off and the lower outfield being... well... you saw it.

I honestly could be wrong, but I would think that the fan density would be higher towards home plate, the section you took for your % is probably one of the sparser sections. I know it's only a rough estimation.
I wish SB nation had 30 million subscribers and we had anywhere near a chance at getting a chart party released every day. Just. So. Good.
Maybe this was ingenius stategy. Make the relief pitcher run the bases and tire himself out before he has to pitch the next inning... Or he just couldn't throw a strike.

The Nagy situation was due to the fact that Manny Ramirez (listed as the DH) thought he was the right fielder, and in the bottom of the first he ran out to play right field, so when the DH moves out to the field a team loses the DH and the pitcher bats. A team also loses its DH when a position player becomes a pitcher.
Speaking as a Red Sox fan, I'm not in the least surprised that Manny Ramirez was somehow involved. Fan favorite, but gods, he was dumb as a brick out there.

It's sad for Casey, but the pitcher had a great time. No one enjoyed this.
You might've mentioned the fact that Casilla actually got a hit the following season (2012), an RBI single no less, off the D-Backs' Matt Lindstrom in Phoenix. What's more, he actually batted *.462* in the minors...six hits in 13 at-bats, including two doubles and a triple!
There's now 88 immaculate innings in MLB history. The last two happened within like the last week

Chris Keck Pitchers need to stay warm, and I’m not sure his stamina was that low. If they wanted to “get in his head” (which is weird to do if the game is close) they could have walked him intentionally.

Awesome video, great breakdown of the whole situation. However, the crowd density estimation could use some further thinking. 10 people? Count more. It’s the 9th inning for a team that isn’t the most popular, I think it’s reasonable to think a significant portion of the fans left early. Also, the sample size for crowd estimation was taken in the bleachers (not the most popular place to sit) and there’s a real possibility that they just switched to better seats and the ushers don’t care. I think you may have been able to double, even triple your crowd sample size and it would still be accurate.

Your estimate for the attendance was poorly considered. This year, the marlins had an all time low of 1,590 people, so 552 is certainly wrong. That year, the marlins averaged in the 15K range of the attendants per game. You estimated using the worst part of the ballpark in the 9th inning when the game was basically over. Also, paying persons in that section likely moved to a new section with a better view due to the emptying of seats.

To be fair, his point isn't about how many people went to that game, but how many people saw this at-bat. So the people that already left don't count. That being the worst part of the ballpark plus the possibility of people moving to better seats is true, though. So it was probably higher than his estimate, but still much lower than the total attendance of the game.

Ray Chapman of the Indians was hit in the head by a pitch in 1920 and died the next day, probably the only player to die in a major league game. Back then it was common to use only one ball the entire game - fouls and home runs were tossed back on the playing field - and as the ball got dirtied up, it was harder to see in the late afternoon sun. Ray literally never saw what hit him.

.462 is a little misleading given the small sample size, but 6 for 13 still ain't a bad stretch.

This isn't the only strange batting event of Santiago Casilla's career. He got to hit again on May 21, 2014, and worked the count full. He obviously wasn't supposed to swing again, but on the 3-2 pitch, he swung, and actually put it in play. It was a ground ball to shortstop, and Casilla sprinted down the line (also not supposed to do). He tripped over first base and was out for a month.
