I absolutely love this video. Estates always look so regal and perfect in films. The reality is that they are homes and properties, some several centuries old, that require constant upkeep and repair. Thank-you for showing us what "real life" in these homes actually looks like.
I just discovered this channel, and I have become emotionally invested in the pool project. I came across this stuff because I was looking into natural swimming pools, but this project is really fascinating, given the age and size of the pool. Y'all should consider putting all of the pool-related videos into their own playlist, so they're easier to find for those who are interested in this sort of thing.
Julie you're quite right to watch Italian cartoons - my daughter found watching Spanish TV programmes and films so helpful when she started learning Spanish, she now has an honours degree in Spanish and Portuguese!
Architecturally speaking: Get approval from historic preservation authority, introduce yourself to an ambitious civil engineer, then: 1)passive groundwater drainage behind the pool wall, 2)secure and reinforce behind existing pool walls, 3)seal behind the pool, 4)seal coat interior pool walls. Easily done with Time, talented craftsmen and craftswomen, and a boatload of money. *Note: Work Nestor into project as a Summer construction intern. Priority should be passive collection and redirecting groundwater first.
Would love to see a video of all the pets at Mapperton and their favorite hang out spots on the estate. Looks like the kitties love patrolling the pool and garden area! 😻
As an American, I find this simply fascinating! I love how you all have preserved the history of this beautiful place!! As you know Julie, America is so young and we simply don’t have the architectural history as the U.K. Thanks so much for allowing us to see inside of your home!😘
Can't wait for the pool to repair such an amazing project, a concrete pool to be all natural and no chemicals... Hopefully get to see more of the work. Julie must be in a tight schedules... good luck. Luke a stopper for pool water leak, that was cute demonstration.
My husband suggested you need a tool for that handle on the water to your fire hose. It would give you more leverage to turn it on or off. Especially in an emergency situation. I’m sure one of your handy men or fire department could show you one. It should be attached so it stays right there.
Although it's survived as is for quite a while, perhaps adding a diverting drainage system to move the ground water away. I'm thinking there's a reason why pools aren't put at the lowest point in gardens anymore!
"Hi Andy"! Can't wait to see how his crew fixes the pool!! The fire safety info is really interesting.I'm going to look up the Italian Fairy Tales on You Tube. Thanks for telling us about them. Love from Vermont
Yes Julie, please some type of filtration system to filter out what the silt and other stuff so you aren’t swimming in, as you so aptly said, an algae soup.
I showed this to a friend of mine who fixes pools and farm ponds in the Northwest of the US. He laughed. His crew could do the job in less than a week and the end result would have been guaranteed for ten years and shouldn't have an issue for many decades. What a difference! He also builds natural filters.
Can't imagine a guy from the North West of America has ever had to deal with English Heritage 😀 the paperwork alone is two weeks if it goes smoothly and they have a good relationship with the local case officer and it's just going to be classed as maintenance rather that restoration.
While watching the "fire inspection" part of the video, I envisioned you having a fire drill. Locating the extinguisher, turning on the water to the hose, unraveling the hose, shooting water out a window to make sure the water is connected and the hose has enough pressure. 😀 In my vision, things didn't go all that well but I knew Julie would figure it out.
Luke, I believe for a New Years Resolution you should clean the Queen Elizabeth Bathe so Julie can take her cold swims until the big pool is repaired. Just a thought.
Look into floating planters for natural filtration. You may need to look into something custom that combines vertical gardening with floating planters.
They said in previous video it had filter before (i assume the berms at bottom of pool were added to hide pipes to divert to “new” filter. Added in 50-60s or later i expect) but it broke a few years ago.
A mechanical filter would seem the most “natural” but that would require regular filter changes, and the power to pump it though. I use a similar one with a large system of fish!
Oh my Julie! Somehow I could relate, whereever I go there’s project to take care of. Mom’s house in my hometown, grandpa’s house in mom’s hometown, even in Bali. The good thing they’re all small.
The city of Portland, Oregon for many years has had some of the most pristine water in the US which comes from the Bull Run Watershed. When we lived there, it was only treated by a sand filter then charcoal. As others have said, water plants would go a long way to help clean the water, and combined with a gravity filter of sand and charcoal could really work well for you. I’m happy to see this done and even though it’s expensive, I think routing the groundwater away with tiling would be best in the long run. Best wishes for 2022 and thank you for sharing your wonderful home and family with all of us.
What a project you have taken on! The outside of the pool correctly needs to be sealed and possibly even reinforced. The inside needs a less porous coating like plaster which will be easier to clean. In the US there are health requirements to comply with. It can be done naturally or with UVC light with hydrogen peroxide. With the large amount of water you are dealing with, don't limit yourself to standard pool pumps. More sophisticated pumps used in water treatment plants may be more cost effective in the long run. Just built 2 hotel pools with the UV / H2O2 sanitation system and variable speed pumps from Grundfos.
There are natural water filtering systems that use plants, which would change the visual aspect of the pool, and you would have to build a shelf, because they are shallow water plants. Probably not practical for this historical pool in a formal garden. Maybe you can create a natural pool somewhere else on the estate... Luke pointed out a possible site near the beaver enclosure. Chateau de Lande (TH-cam - Chateau Diaries) is making a natural pool out of the old chateau fishery. Stephanie"s garden designer, Davey, is probably the person to give you the particulars on how it works.
Just catching up on last week or so vids. All Mapperton "going ons" are so interesting. But want you to know what really makes it all grow and be successful is the two of you. Luke & Julie. Love from Texas🇺🇸
Hello, i am new to this channel and like Julie, i am a pool enthusiast! I never saw such a beautiful pool and i look forward to seeing the renovations in there!
Build a new cinder block pool within the pool, partially fill between with gravel, etc for filtering wetland grasses, etc. Don't do anything about the groundwater leaks, it's a feature.
Have you considered installing a wetland filter to deal with the algae. The algae is there as there are excess nutrients (plant food) in the water. Cycling the water threw a water plant bog garden/wetland will use up these nutrients so the algae wont have much to feed on reducing the amount of algae. Also, if your main complaint is the pea soup type algae I recommend a UV clarifier to deal with it. The UV is not chemical and will not harm the wildlife. Check out the videos of Aquascapes from the US they have made some natural swimming pools.
I really enjoy watching the repairs rather then having to do them! Keep up the good work. I love watching leaks go away. That’s the best! Water is such a strange thing, in that it always finds a way into our happily bliss little lives 🤨
Hi guys hope you get the pool all sorted it looks amazing. Hope that you are able not to cut corners with the repairs as this could backfire in the future. The reason I am saying this is that was on a similar job a few years ago nowhere near as big but still reasonable size . I was one of a few joiners and builders working on this estate which was getting refurbished and the owners did not want to spend the estimated price of the pool to get repaired as they wanted to spend elsewhere and only half the budget on the pool. Big mistake within 3 months it all cracked 2 sides of the pool came down and all the pool area was ruined all because they wanted to cut corners hope this helps with any issues you may come across Really enjoy the TH-cam channel all the best Scott
You should get a magnesium/mineral system. The water clearer, has a silky smooth feel, and is gentler on the skin and eyes - particularly beneficial for people with skin ailments, like psoriasis or eczema.😀
I am in the Southeastern part of the United States and am planning to install a pool. My pool contractor recommended a UV Filtration System. I'm told it's popular out west and working it's way across the country. What's appealing is that it's ultimately fresh water in the pool and does not require any chemicals. Cost efficient, easier maintenance, and better for my body and the pool equipment. Have a look to see if that's an option for you! Good luck!
Could you install drainage tile around the outside of the pool to divert the ground water? Seems like that would take off some of the groundwater pressure from the walls.
Just watched the video !!! Wow wee great news on the pool , looking forward to seeing the work being done .. love love this channel… Pippa is a sweet kitty 🐈⬛ ❤️😻
We had a house where water entered under the floor over the top of the concrete pad of the house. We had a special type of concrete installed as a skim on the walls and floor, which they use on dams, to keep the water in, It had to be brought in through the front door and down through a hole in the floor of the sitting room. It took a whole week for just a small house. But we also had a french drain installed outside the wall of the house to drain away the excess water as well. And then we put a patio above to take the water away from the house as well. It was more than 35 years ago and it cost a lot of money. So the amount for that huge pool will be enormous. Algae of the wrong sort can be very dangerous.
Hey Mapperton team!! PLEASE reach out to the crew @Team Aquascape They specialize in naturally filtered recreation ponds/pools and will be a great resource for you!
My son owns a fibreglass pool factory, my husband says Grey marble plaster if you don’t fibreline it. Force cracks open with steel nails leave nails in cracks, this stops movement polyurethane to fill cracks for movement or use underwater epoxy
You can do a piping herringbone system down the length of the pool. Saltwater chlorination, if you have a pool leading into this pool you can use purifying plants to clean the water first
If it's not repaired on the outside all around the pool, water will find another spot to come out of. Eventually, one by one, the walls of the pool will fail. It will save them money to either do the job correctly or fill up the pool with dirt now.
@@rolo4945 although saltwater systems are lovely (I don't like chlorine either) if memory serves me the water from the pool also goes into a smaller cistern-like one and then into the river so that would be detrimental to the ecosystem. Also to the wildlife that currently uses the pool, which I think they care about. Including a shelf of water cleansing plants, putting in filtration and a handful of live Carp could be possible solution. Carp keep the algea and regrowth at bay being vegetarian fish, but it would involve a little bit of maintenance to monitor water ph levels and feed extra. They are quite tamable fish like their cousins the Koi (technically carp too). Might be nice to swim with fish. The problem seems really fixing the groundwater problem and 360 reinforcement or this problem will return in decades only.
Not a pool expert so take my advice with a grain of salt, but since you want to keep it fairly natural and avoid chemicals like chlorine it seems like it might be worth researching how people stop man made ponds from becoming algae soup, looking at using things like plants to create an ecosystem that keeps it under control :)
We've just discovered you and are enjoying the videos! Have you considered building a bog filter near the pond for natural filtration? I realized the architecture of the gardens is already in place, so any additional feature might need to be incorporated into another. The first name that comes to mind with this kind of thing is Anthony Archer-Wills. Wetland filtration is not only very effective but it also gives an opportunity for some very fun gardening!
It's great the pool is been repaired. For the fire hoses I think a "Gate Valve" would be best. The "Turn Valve" seems Very Hard to Turn!!! Did the Fire Office do a Pressure Test on the Hoses? We had the Fire Hydrants in our area Tested. For a Large Home there should be a Integrated Fire Alarm System which should be tested regularly. Good Luck 🍀 With the Pool Renovations. Good Wishes from Ireland ☘. 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀
My wife is Thai and can relate to your method of learning Italian. She is fluent in English and Japanese and learned the basics of both languages by watching cartoons. She is proof that it works as long as you stick to it...
Store a bit of small rod near your fire hose set ups so that you can fit it through the handle and use as a lever to get it on and off when they are tough to turn. About 9-10 inches is great.
Actually plants with an oxygen system will prevent algae from growing. Also an aquatic algae eater will help with Natural filtration, plus it is easier to create than expected.
Hi, look into Natural Swimming Ponds. They use plants to naturally filter the water. In your case without an edge area to use as a planting area - perhaps floating “islands” anchored to the bottom with a weight. In my old pond, I used water plant baskets for the plants and placed them atop stones stacked under water….maybe zip tie a bunch together and attach a floatation device that will get covered with plant growth??? It’s worth looking into….chemicals are horrible for you and your pond wildlife. Best of luck and I look forward to seeing it refilled and in use again!
Julie, you have mentioned in the video that you have been coming to the house for 20 years, but you actually lived here for 4 years, would you in some video talk about this - I understand there is a tradition of how the family inherits the property, if you share or not share with your in-law parents etc 🙏🌹 and where did you live before moving into this house?🥰😍
That pool has quite similar problems to old hydroelectric power plants, and they are usually repaired by first hydroblasting the loose concrete off the surface and then injecting concrete into the cracks to seal it. Here in Finland a company that does these sort of repairs reinforced the oldest highways bridge still in use with similar techniques.
You can fix a thick flexible plastic plate behind the gap in the middle of the pool and inside you put something that works as a big cork. 🤗😅 You add some product in new concrete wich stoppes water going throug. You've also got bio based paint to paint the whole inside of the pool blue. Or yellow as you like 🙂😅
I love these people and omg so breathtaking everything is! But come on who else LOLed when he said he was going to put his thumb in it, followed by "There was a story about a boy who stuck his thumb in a dike"...
You really do need confidence in learning New Languages. I love how Julie’s so passionate in learning that she’s not afraid of mispronouncing Italian words. My biggest fear in learning Chinese and Spanish.
Its interesting, you can see along the bottom where some time of previous plumbing exist for what I guess would be a filtering system. You can see intake and exhaust ports around the outer perimeter. I wish someone would explain what that is.
Without using chemicals, you can slow the formation of algae down. Constant cleaning, adding a couple of pumps to keep the water moving with mechanical filters and water changes will help, but not eliminate algae build up. What you can do (as I am sure someone has already pointed out) is build a second pool to use as a filter for the main pool. You do this by building a pool with roughly the same surface area, but only a couple of feet deep. Feeding the water from the pool into one end of it and out of the other. In between you will need a variety of plants that act as a mechanical filter and (the important part) a couple of bucket loads of zooplankton. Over time the zooplankton will multiply and take over both pools, they will feed on the algae as it builds.
Loved this💗 Have you thought about a salt water pool. Many of my friends that had traditional chlorinated pools have made the switch. I think it is worth looking into.💗

And that beautiful kitty is it yours It's gorgeous cute kitty kitty kitty
That i cat is gorgeous and she is cute
Store a bit of small rod near your fire hose set ups so that you can fit it through the handle and use as a lever to get it on and off when they are tough to turn. About 9-10 inches is great.
Actually plants with an oxygen system will prevent algae from growing. Also an aquatic algae eater will help with Natural filtration, plus it is easier to create than expected.
Green grass in January!! I got 60-75cm of snow here in Canada .
Julie, you're amazing! Another language?!!! Love you!
Can we get a channel where we follow the Mapperton cats around?
As long as you're having the pool repaired, you should put in some proper concrete steps.
I would have advised stone.
You can fix a thick flexible plastic plate behind the gap in the middle of the pool and inside you put something that works as a big cork. 🤗😅
You add some product in new concrete wich stoppes water going throug.
You've also got bio based paint to paint the whole inside of the pool blue.
Or yellow as you like 🙂😅
You must be so excited!
I love these people and omg so breathtaking everything is! But come on who else LOLed when he said he was going to put his thumb in it, followed by "There was a story about a boy who stuck his thumb in a dike"...
Have you thought about setting up a wetland filter? Not sure if you could add that to one end with some water plants.
You really do need confidence in learning New Languages. I love how Julie’s so passionate in learning that she’s not afraid of mispronouncing Italian words. My biggest fear in learning Chinese and Spanish.
A bit of rebar, a bit of gunnite, voila! Better yet, aquaculture and Koi pond.
I think Sevelve should be much easier to open on the fire hose so raven Julie can open the valve. It looked like she couldn’t even turn it.
Loved this💗
Have you thought about a salt water pool. Many of my friends that had traditional chlorinated pools have made the switch. I think it is worth looking into.💗
