The reason for cramping when wearing these is because the soft tissues of the feet are stretching back to a better position after years of being constricted in shoes so in a way, this is a good thing. It's about the whole foot, not just the toes. Correct Toes are a good brand. I'm a retired Podiatrist

People seldom are able to reason or believe that the mechanics of the toes can cause dysfunction beyond the tarsals, past the heel, and up the body.

sorry that you were a podiatrist! its a huge shame that such a profession exists yet no one thinks when buying a shoe on how that shoe will effect them in the future ,its also a shame that all the evidence regarding barefoot shoes is anecdotal,i feel like conventional medicine is overall extremely faulty ,i am 3 months into my walking/running journey i bought like 15 pairs of shoes to experiment with, i have returned 2 expensive vivobarfoots witch in my opinion is still too much a distance from barefoot feel ,my best pair so far is an 8 dollar pair in witch i have done a few 20 mile walk /runs i am a full believer in forefoot running in barefoot shoes and use of toe spreaders, at 37 years so far after loads of foot blisters till its now finally callused/toughened enough and loads of muscle soreness witch none were of concern to me as they toughen up and get stronger, my only concern was joint discomfort because that could lead to long term issues ,so far my heels knees and ankels, back were not impacted at all,my biggest concern was left hip discomfort i had from time to time witch triggered me to study more on running technique and posture and i think i adjusted correctly as my last 20 mile run i only has muscle soreness ,my hips were good

@@humility-righteous-giving I agree that conventional medicine is faulty. I'm not conventional as a podiatrist at all. That's why I endorse correct toes and I sell Starfish jandals, that give the feet a supportive base, (most of us need this due to having worn shoes all our lives), while maximizing freedom of movement around the ankle and toes. I'm glad I'm a podiatrist - it has provided me with the knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics on which to expand my thinking

I've been wearing these spacers since 2017. Without them, I wouldn't be able to walk or drive my car. I have damaged nerves between my toes on both feet, which swell and get excruciatingly painful if I walk without them, or drive because of the vibration from the gas peddle. My foot doctor only gave me 2 options, and they were to either get a series of shots in my feet, which are very painful, or have the nerves removed - I said no to both. I did have to work my feet up to using the spacers. Every time I tried to put them on, my feet would cramp up. So I started out using Toe Socks for a while, then I went to Yoga Socks that just has the loops. I also wore them to bed. After about a month, I was able to use the spacers and keep them on all day if I had to. They were a Godsend to me. I'm glad to see them here for a lot less money.

I bought some 6 or 7 years ago and wore them a lot when kayaking. With that you're just loading up a kayak, driving, then taking it to the side of a bank to sit in the kayak several hours, so my feet are NOT used to hiking in them! I just took both my dogs for a hike last night and thought, "I'll take these shoes for a spin!"
I stepped on a rock under my right heel along the gravel trail, and that hurt a good mile. If I had my way, someone would have picked me up in the parking lot to avoid the walk the rest of the way home! I also learned that my left big toe was rubbing because it veers in just slightly, so my toe hurt. When I got home, I let the dogs outside for one more potty break before bed, and I immediately sat down to get off my feet. I could feel both my entire legs pulsating. They got so much bloodflow and such a good workout simply from walking! Despite the right heel hurting to what feels like the bone, I think I'm going to stick with it. I speed walk, and I have been slamming my heels down, so I need to learn how to rewalk! Did you have any issues transitioning to these shoes back in 2005?

The blue gel ones, I cut the ends off so that those bands around the big toe and pinky are gone. Additionally removed the smallest spacer (pinky toe side) as this way was the best fit for my feet. Doing this has allowed the toes to become accustomed to toe spacers. I have but can’t wear the brand your recommending. Ater using these modified gel ones, the white ones are becoming comfortable.

My journey started with a bunion. I do toe yoga, I wear toe spacers & I just got my first pair of minimalist/barefoot boots (I live in a cold area). Usually I dread walking because normal shoes cause me a lot of back pain, but I just took a walk (seriously, just got the boots, put them on and took a walk) & I actually didn’t want to stop! I have never felt more comfortable walking. I got xero shoes in men’s because I already have a wide foot (one of the reasons my feet were getting so bad is I was still trying to wear women’s shoes) so I first started with a men’s regular shoe, then a men’s wide shoe, so I chose a men’s barefoot. I will NEVER go back. I’m going to donate all my regular shoes now. Once you adjust it is simply amazing.

Recently i bought a pair of Yeezy 350 (they have a wide toe box and are knit so your toes have room for movement) and i been walking around a lot. Usually after half a mile my feet are starting to hurt but with those i walled about 4 miles and no pain!! I started learning about having your toes spread out gives you arches and alleviates foot pain. I never considered toe spaces until watching this video. If i use both then i think my problem will be 100% resolved 🤔

Good morning Dr Tang….I’m a subscriber, and this is another great video!. I’m in mid-60s, and spent nearly 45years wearing uniforms (Navy and law enforcement)…obviously often requiring wearing a uniform-type dress shoe, which over time narrowed my feet. I am successfully correcting that, as I am active (hike, backpack, bike, etc) and in retirement, have adopted a “zero shoe” lifestyle. Re: toe spacers, I have tried two varieties (off of Amazon), and they work. They are the molded rubber-like silicon types, that band around all five toes. Once stretched on, they are comfortable enough….but one morning, after just 20 -30 minutes, my wife alarmingly remarked that my toes were looking purple (she was right, as circulation was impeded), and removal immediately returned them to “normal”. Last night, while reading, I again had them on for a long period, even wearing them to take my dog outside. At some point (maybe 45 minutes), I felt a numbing and stinging feeling in my two smallest toes…removed the spacers, and it appeared to have temporarily deformed the toes (yes, like what happens when wearing a ring that’s too small). The toes returned to normal within an hour or so. I don’t want to stop this process, but now think mine are too small (I don’t remember being asked my “toe size” when I ordered them!!!). The version that works for you….does it constrict your three inner toes in any way, as in circulation….? I’m going to give them, or some other alternative, a try. Again, sir, thank you!

I keep reading that it's best to use them when standing or walking, when you're using the foot by applying pressure. Apparently using them when watching TV or sleeping is useless. 'Correct toes' spacers have the cut out inside so you can adjust them once you want your toes to spread further. This feature for me is a must. Almost all others do not have this feature so are only good for beginners in my opinion.

Just a heads up, the spacers that he recommends (that he has in his hands in the beginning of the video). aren't good for narrow footed people, people with naturally large spaces between their big toe and index toe, or llittle toes that slope down any level of steeply. These are made for one specific foot type (fairly straight, bunched toes, with little slope deviation in the toe heights). You can try and slice them up to make them fit as this is recommended some places (with guides as well on how to do it), but most likely it will never fit right and the cut areas will be uncomfortable.

I'm glad I saw this because I was wondering if the recommended spacers would work with my toes, which are kinda short and curve down slightly while the foot itself is wide. It's weird to explain...unless you look at a foot chart, then my feet are Egyptian with a low to non-existent arch. I think the recommended spacers would just swallow my toes and make it a bit hard to walk around in. ._.

As a retired physical therapist, I used to make these from foam I got at JoAnn's. The question really is, what benefits are there? I can say I saw a significant improvement in balance in many patients, they got rid of my knee pain because they decreased my genu valgus, and the friend, Timmy Wallace, PT, indicated that she saw decreased spasticity. I also noted that when I took them off to wash, when I got up I was walking on a different part of my little toe. After a few years, I stopped because I started having more cramps, but eventually returned to them. The advantage of making your own is that they can be made to fit, they can be washed easily, and you can quickly forget you are wearing them.

Video Request. Great info here BTW. I've started looking into barefoot shoes but need better options when less sporty styles are called for-like a lace up, dress shoe or boot that has extra wide toe boxes, my feet are 1-2 toes wider than conventional footwear. Could you please highlight some brands/styles that have more toe space other than barefoot shoes or a barefoot shoe brand that has styles passable to more formal/business wear?

Toe spacers are great and definitely reclaim the natural form of your foot but when eventually snag that outstretched pinky toe on something you will learn the true meaning of pain. True story.

I work on a hard Concrete surface and I am on my feet for 8 to 10 hours a day wearing steel toe regulated boots. With that said I don't think it would be practical to wear the toe spacers during the day while working however would it be good enough to wear them at night when I'm asleep 8 hours or more? That is about the best I can do except for wearing them all day on the weekend? Please let me know your thoughts

Why do shoes even have that narrowing style towards the tip if it's causing our feet to form 'unnaturally'? I demand wide shoe tips!

is it a good idea to rely on that? wouldn't your body naturally adapt to having spacers so after a long time wearing it, won't your toes lose their natural ability to keep apart from each other and thus be worse than before?

My dad has pretty bad bunions and foot pain/ mobility problems in his 60s. I'm in my 30s and seem to be developing significant bunions already, although I do not have any pain or foot problems yet. Would toe spacers help reverse this? I don't wear tight shoes very often and I am mostly barefoot at home, so I am assuming its genetic.
