    Junior in high school here. I’ve always been interested in the environment and I’ve jumped back and forth about what I want to do with my life. I’ve been looking for something that pays well, allows me to have a personal life, and will give me the opportunity to positively impact the world. I’ve found environmental engineering recently and I think it’s what I want to do. Definitely gonna keep watching your videos. I think demand in this field is going to grow tremendously in the coming years so I’m optimistic.

      Im a sophomore in college rn and im majoring in environmental engineering . What i would recommend is getting an advising catalog from the university you plan on attending. Then take as many classes that will transfer at a community college and then transferring those credits. Saves tons of $$$. ALSO dont make the mistake i made , DO NOT BUY A MACBOOK if youre going to major in engineering

    Randy, I was listening to your video about day to day work of an environmental engineer. I have a BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology and worked in the Environmental Field for ten years. I did three years of military service then as a veteran I went to work on a Department of Energy Waste Cleanup site in 1989. I spent seven years there. It was a good starting career path and I used the company's tuition reimbursement benefits to start a Masters's Degree in Engineering Management I worked in Radiation Safety and Waste Disposal programs and later in a Department doing NEPA studies. Along the way, I was serving in the Air National Guard and found an opportunity to be commissioned as a Bio Environmental Engineering Officer in the USAF. I went to the USAF School of Aerospace Medicine where I learned about Health Physics and Environmental Management and Programs like Hazardous Waste Management and Environmental Sampling programs and much more. It's amazing to think about it but Air Force Bases are like small cities. There are many industrial facilities and labs, machine shops and repair shops, fuel tanks, fuel pipelines, hazardous waste storage facilities, water treatment plants, power plants, and much more. They are like small municipalities actually. Later I took a job as a GS-0819 which is an Environmental Engineer with the Federal Government working on an Air Force Base. If you are working in this field for a federal agency there are several paths you can follow you can work for the EPA, Department of Energy, Department of Defense, Army Corps of Engineers, or Dept of the Interior. There are some GS-819 positions in other Departments like VA. If you are employed on any installation Environmental Engineers do a lot of projects as part of a team for example paired up with Civil Engineers. You could find yourself managing environmental programs under some federal statutes like 40 CFR (Protection of the Environment) and your job in this case is going to be all about managing programs. With Programs It's all about records management and paperwork to make sure you are in compliance because EPA and or State EPA inspectors can show up at your facility and demand to inspect something. You could even be sent to prison and fined under federal law if you mishandle hazardous waste or falsify paperwork saying you disposed of dangerous materials and didn't. So managing things like Hazardous Waste Management, Air Quality, Water Quality, etc is very important. You might be managing procurement contracts for services because you will be using contractors for specialized services. For example, Hazardous Waste Disposal, Cleaning out Oil Water Separators, Removing old underground storage tanks, and taking water samples from wells at the boundary of the facilities. You could also work on compliance for things like Underground Storage Tanks, in federal facilities, there are a lot of them. You can manage programs that monitor tanks or you might even be asked to work on a Project to pull old tanks out and remediate the soil around them. On federal installations, there are many Brownfield projects. There might even be something like Asbestos abatement in old buildings. Of course, this is my experience other people could have other experiences. There are much more green and renewable energy projects as well as sustainability programs today. Things you might not even think about like Water Conservation programs at catchment projects on federal installations in dry climates like Texas, Nevada, California, Arizona, and New Mexico to name a few. However, in the federal space, compliance and 40 CFR-type work probably are going to be the major thing that you do on a daily basis. This happens in both municipalities and federal installations. Nothing has changed in that regard. The longer you work in this field the more intimate you are going to become with federal and state regulations. Sometimes you are going to wonder why you didn't go to Law School to study environmental law. I thought about getting a Masters's Degree in Environmental engineering but it turns out that you might be better served by getting an Engineering Management Degree and certification as a Project Manager. Why? Because Environmental Masters programs focus a lot of attention on Water and Biological Uptake and Transport. So if you want to study things like the chemistry of water go for it. In fact, Hydrogeology might actually be something worth studying if you want to do Environmental work. With pollution and the environment in my experience, it always comes back to something getting into the air, soil, or into water. Getting a Masters's Degree in GIS might be an interesting thing also because all of the disciplines involving land use and watershed use GIS tools. If you are a person who is interested in things like biological systems then Environmental Science is probably your path. Environmental Engineering is about three things mainly. Preventing Pollution (Elimination of Waste streams from products), Remediation of Pollution and Waste when mishaps occur, things like spills and underground plumes that result in Soil Reclamation work or Pump and Treat projects, and lastly Compliance related work(making sure all the paperwork and regulatory frameworks involving State and Federal statutes are followed. This is the 40 CFR work I spoke about. Of course, Green Energy and Alternative energy things are exciting and interesting I am just explaining what you could find yourself doing if you end up working for a Municipal Government or Federal Government. Eventually, I realized that I didn't want to spend a 40-year career dealing with 40 CFR. In the late 1990s the department I worked with upgraded its computer systems for environmental management and compliance database programs. They sent me to school to learn things like Linux Administration, MS SQL and Microsoft Server 4.0 Administration. I fell in love with IT and have worked as an IT Systems Engineer quite happily now for over 20 years. If you love environmental engineering projects there is plenty to do and it's a great career, but if you don't enjoy working in a very rigid and constrained environment where Federal and State Regulations govern all that you do then find some specialty niche in the career field that keeps you away from managing compliance programs which is going to be hard to do in my opinion. The longer you stay in the career and if you end up working as a Supervisor or Manager you are eventually going to become involved in compliance. So courses in Engineering Management, Environmental Law, and perhaps certifications in Project Management might be more useful to you than an MS in Environmental Engineering because it all depends on what you are doing. This is just my experience of over a decade of working in this field, your mileage may vary, and talking to others might give you a different opinion.

    Hi, I graduated from Environment Engineering and i feel i learn many things but not exactly in deep level (its like part of chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical, and of course civil engineering). This 4 main major actually can took over env engineer role in reality so I encourage anyone with env eng bachelor to take master related to those major above (at least chemical engineering or civil engineering). It open more opportunity as env. Engineering. My self got scholarship in petroleum engineering ( yes, it sound completely different major, lol) and i got opportunity transferable knowledge to oil and gas engineering system. Mechanic fluids and plumbing class that i took during my bachelor degrrr is very advantages knowledge in pipeline engineering design. And knoeledge about soil and hydrology system help me understand about basic geology.

    Hi Randy, just saw your video pop up as I'm looking into "what do to after being an Environmental Engineer for 5 years". My experience has been different than yours to say the least. I work for a manufacturing company in Alabama as the air lead and the stress level has been as high as it possibly can since 2020.
    On the industry side, we have to collect, process, and file the data for all the Government reports that are required for the State and Federal. Plan and execute all the emission test, then report. It's a long and tedious job.

I've had a coworker tell me her boss straight up told her she won't get a raise if she got a Masters and that all she needed to do was gain experience and get the Professional Engineer license. She was OK with just a Bachelors.

I consider the get a degree in the field as a career change, the downside for me is simply my age. After graduating I will be in my early 40s, so I am scared in a way being too old for an entry-level position. If you have any experience or thoughts on that I would be really thankful.

    • @RandyLy
      @RandyLy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll put that on my to do list, but to answer your concern.
      Classes that are a part of Civil Engineering that can help increase your skillsets are AutoCAD/Microstation, Matlab, and GIS. There may be more, but those are just to name a few. I do not have an entire list because it varies greatly depending on your university’s curriculum and what they offer.
      Aside from the classes learned from academia, you will be required to have certain soft skills. Basically, you have to know how to speak professionally, deal with customers, present data concisely, and write proficiently. Even though you may graduate with this degree, not having these skills can really hurt you when you actually work. You don’t have to be an introvert; you just have to know how and when to speak. These skills are developed as you learn on the job, so don’t worry too much if you aren’t a professional in these yet.

Youre already asking the right questions, so if youre passionate about these things like many including myself are, it will be a rewarding and challenging path to follow!

      There isn't much similarity, so no you probably won't be able to transition easily. What makes you want to switch though? I would think that people are more willing to jump from their current degree into something related to technology.

    Hi Randy,thanks for your clear explaination .Is it true that u can hardly become a engineer if you doesnt get a first honour degree in the engineering that you involved it cuz i saw lots of example from my friend,relatives that doesnt get a good or intermediate result they cant even get a job that related to their field,is it hard to get a first honour degree in environmental engineering?i am still struggling in choosing between civil and environmental enginnering course due to most of the article ,video mentioned that civil has a broad field to involved in,easy to get employ while environmental still a relatively new course n can hardly find a job after u graduate cuz it is not well known

    • @RandyLy
      @RandyLy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is true that Env Eng is relatively new and is much harder to get employed compared to a Civil Engineer. With my experiences, you don't need to be a top graduate because employers rarely ask for GPA or honors. This applies for both Civil and Env Engineers. I have never heard any classmates getting rejected because they didn't have a high enough GPA standard at their company.
      If you are worried about job employment, go with Civil Engineer. They are more generalized and are more flexible if you want to switch around in the engineering field. Env Eng is geared more towards science, not engineering.

    thanks for the video. I am going to become a junior high scholar in a month and I have a huge interest in becoming an environmental engineer. I love doing positive things both for people and the environment. However, I have a question. How much chemistry is involved with becoming an environmental engineer. To be totally honest, I do not like chemistry that much. I took it as a sophomore last year and did not really enjoy it. But I still have an interest in becoming an environmental engineer. What do you think?

    • @RandyLy

      Thank you for watching the video and expressing your interest in becoming an environmental engineer! It's great to hear that you have a passion for making a positive impact on both people and the environment. Regarding your question about the amount of chemistry involved in becoming an environmental engineer, I understand that not everyone enjoys chemistry. The good news is that while some foundational knowledge of chemistry is required as part of the prerequisite courses, the extent of chemistry involved in environmental engineering can vary depending on your specific focus or career path within the field. Environmental engineering encompasses a wide range of disciplines, including water and wastewater treatment, air pollution control, solid waste management, and more. While there may be some chemistry concepts involved in these areas, they are typically covered at a level that is necessary for understanding the environmental processes and engineering principles involved. Rest assured, you don't need to have a deep affinity for chemistry to pursue a career in environmental engineering.

    Hey Randy! Thanks for posting so much content about this field.
    I’m in 4th year Bachelors of Science degree at a Canadian university. I’m looking at my options to tack on to the degree and I was looking at a env. eng option. I had a couple questions.
    How is your work/life balance with a job like this?
    Do you find others in your field possess higher forms of education as well (MSc, MEng)?

    • @RandyLy
      @RandyLy  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1) Work-life balance will depend on the company culture. I can't say that it will be the same experience for everyone working in this field. But mine is very well. I am not micromanaged and am free to move about my work whenever I want to. (Unlimited bathroom breaks, lunch is at your own reasonable schedule so long as you get the work done, PTO and vacation time is good and my boss won't ask for a reason every time I file for one.)
      2) It's weird but in my office out of the entire coworkers in my field; I have the highest degree with my Masters. But my company doesn't care about who has the highest education. They care more about experience and if you can do the work.

      It depends on the employer. Although it's a given fact that higher education would probably mean higher pay and better opportunities, some employers might not want you because you're too expensive. They would rather hire a less educated person with lower pay if they can do the same thing as you. It's really hard to say on that because, of course, I wanted to get higher pay and job opportunities too.
