    Upon watching this video, for a moment it was depressing, fantasy and reality are vastly different. However, I came to quickly realize that what we set ourselves out to do isn't revolved around a specific major or skill- there is no such thing as a miracle or world-saving major. It all depends on how you utilize your skills creatively and to truly make a difference, you must know the opposition better than it knows itself whether it be social like a corporation or something naturally occurring. That way you are able to hold the cards and you are able to truly create a difference.
    I still believe that the objectives I will set out to do once I start my college journey as an Environmental engineer can be accomplished through will, hope and never giving up

    Many companies have departments wholly focused on research and development. But I think as a rule universities probably add most to technological development and are probably easier to get work - continuing after post grad as a fellow etc. Although as a recent Environmental Engineering Graduate, I briefly looked at post grad work on a project with a professor, the scholarship (if you qualify) is only $35000 per year whereas starting in industry is often $70000+, at least here in Australia. So the willingness to make direct contributions to green technology development working at a uni may come at a loss to the wallet. But I suppose the wage is survivable. Thanks for the content Randy!

    Hi, neat videos and good details on the subject. I work as a environmental engineer (contaminated site remediation) and can feel what you say. IMO, a lot of 'changing world' is done by the ones without a college degree even. And no matter what engineering stream you choose to specialize in, engineering teaches the 'how to' and technicalities for logically understanding complex concepts.
    An algorithm is an algorithm no matter the kind of engineer.

    • @RandyLy
      @RandyLy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It's mostly like weekly inspection reports (like 1 paragraph of what I found around the base). It's not complicated and no one really checks it. It's just good to have in case some auditor ever does. Another example is like processing materials. So if some project wants to use like a specific material, they submit it to me and I approve/disapprove it. If you can survive like a 5 page essay for English class, you can definitely do this.

      I didn't have any experience in actual "engineering" either when I made the switch from chemistry to engineering. The good thing about my job title is that it can apply to Civil Engineering and branch off into other fields. My current job is like an being an inspector/auditor, and I can sort of see that as branching into Public Health (imagine being a health inspector at a restaurant). Your best bet would be like "environmental compliance specialist" or "environmental health and safety inspector"

    Hi,Randy!I think the situation in China is the same as US.This major is quite terrible.If you only have a bachelor degree,you can only find a job with very little salary.I am really very disappointed.So i can only continue my learning career and get a master degree.I dont know if it means something and i really dont know where my future is.Perhaps continue to get a PhD degree or find a job(maybe still with little salary).In my opinion,work as an university teacher and teach students may be a very great choice.But,if a student from a major can only continue to teach the next generation students,what is the difference from Ponzi scheme ,hhh.BTW,i want to ask you,Randy.In the beginning of this year,you say this job may not the best,but you love it.And what makes you attitude convert so much?

    • @RandyLy
      @RandyLy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The education system, in general, feels like a Ponzi scheme. If you worry about money, don't go deeper and deeper into student tuition thinking that a higher degree will pay off in the end. Just learn a new skill or jump fields into something you actually enjoy and learn how to monetize that.
      Anyway, I can't say I particularly love this job either. I feel like I am getting used to what I'm doing and it is starting to get boring. I only like it because it pays well for my standard of living, it is not stressful, and I know I am making some impact on helping the environment. It's just not the type of impact that I want, such as inventing new innovative technologies.

So my advice to you while you are studying do volunteering and interenship as much as you can after graduation look for job even with little salary. Then you can do your master while doing master at same time. So you will graduate with degree and experience.

    Hey, Randy. I’m so sorry… I suppose you had this big vision and then got disappointed. This society is SO SLOW in terms of change… I wish things were different! But you know - you could be the one creating your own project. This channel just proves that! You have an entrepreneurial spirit, and with that I’m sure that you can initiate some really cool things! My dream is to do projects on a small scale and show the community around me that it could be done in whole of society too. I might have to have a part time job at the side at first, but eventually I hope to be at the frontier if change and get different sectors to cooperate and get inspired! At the moment I want to buy some land and create an eco village with some cool features. I would also like to work as a consultant in the horse industry here in Sweden and speak to the organizations about an interesting green future in that field! With a creative entrepreneurial attitude I think we can find work that is fulfilling… and that people need to know how important we are for the future 💪🏻🍂

I applaud your ambition and determination! While the journey towards an environmental engineering degree may come with its challenges, it's important to remember that the field offers immense opportunities for growth, impact, and personal fulfillment. Your work as a CDL A driver at the county transfer station provides you with firsthand experience and insights into the waste management sector, which can prove invaluable as you progress in your career. Combining this practical knowledge with an environmental engineering degree can position you for top management roles where you can effect positive change.

    Innovation is pricey. Even Telsa S model lithium battery. Not enough lithium in the world to make every car EV and mining it is damaging environment yet innovation is at a halt and finding ways to run the car without lithium isn’t being considered. So even the wealthiest are stuck in a rut and not necessarily trying to be more and more innovative. Just maintaining and enjoying the money at current success although it is always a possibility to do things even better!
    That said, paperwork and slapping companies on the wrist and being the environmental policy the “the Lorax” of the earth is a big job that shouldn’t be devalued. Too many companies risk people health by their poor practices and profit seeking agendas. Asthma, developmental delays in our children, cancers, autoimmune diseases, infertility….all these problems can be indirectly and even directly linked to environmental hazards. You are doing good even if it isn’t exciting!

    I was highly knowledgeable in Environmental Engineering and Environmental Protection, etc., graduated with honors at the top of my class with a 92% gpa, plus completed a second degree in Chemistry, read 100s of books in my field and was super dedicated and passionate about a meaningful career with purpose, etc. - in the end, after 7 years of weekly interviews and meetings with project managers and many corporations proactively arranged on my own initiative, I couldn’t support myself financially, so I left this field almost 20 years ago. Times may slowly be changing, but I wouldn’t waste your time getting a degree in Environmental Engineering today. It’s primarily a ticket to unemployment. It’s a very hard sell, even today, convincing people protecting the environment and making profit are not mutually exclusive. Good luck to everyone with a vision to save this earth.

      Although I agree that the job market for environmental engineering isn't there yet, I still believe that it is worthwhile to think about the environmental and sustainability into future construction and civil engineering projects. Even if Environmental Engineering isn't the right major, the skills you learn relating to Civil Engineering and Sustainability is still practical.

      @@RandyLy Hi Randy. Saying the market is not there yet is almost funny and sad at the same time. What are we waiting for? Do you remember the Kyoto Protocol? This happened likely long before you were even born. It had the right intentions, but was largely a huge failure. What else is new? The job market has always been there, but it is definitely an extremely niche market. Of course it is worthwhile to protect the environment and plan for sustainability BUT in ALL aspects of human activity - NOT just in construction and civil engineering projects. That is such a narrow view. Take modern agriculture as just one simple example. Monoculture farming has virtually destroyed and polluted agricultural land so much that why do you think nutrient density of food crops have been ‘coincidentially’ declining since modern agriculture began? Of course the environment is important - our very survival and the survival of future generations depend on it. But, reality is, we simply do not care enough. Humans are inherently too selfish. It will ultimately cause our demise. Unfortunately, a few Environmental Engineers can’t change the world.

      That might be a pretty drastic change in fields that the administrators of whichever university you applied for might question your decision. They typically want to see a more similar field when you go to an advanced degree, so you might get rejected.
