    I am a teenager who wanna pursue Environmental Engineering. I came across your channel and learnt more about it. Thank you so much for providing info on this underated but important job field.

    I’m currently a high school graduate who has no idea how does environmental engineering works and whether I’m determined enough for it since I am not really confident with my chemistry and biology although I like them, thanks a lot for this video tho.

    Hi Randy, thanks for the great insights on the career. I expected the reality that most of your days at work would be at a desk, it's largely how jobs are across all industries. Regarding the judgements from loved ones thing, I am very grateful to have a family that is supportive of what I do regardless, and I just hope that everything is ok now with your folks because it looks like you are doing perfectly fine!
    I do have some other questions though. I am in my 3rd semester of community college and I am majoring in biology because I thought I wanted to be a vet for a very long time. Recently, I have had some experiences that made me kind of steer away from medicine as a whole. Biology and chemistry is what I am interested in, but I know that those fields don't really pay too well, plus you often need advanced degrees which I don't really want, for now at least. Due to that, I decided that environmental engineering may be the best path moving forward for me. I really like the environment, as well as bio and chem as I mentioned. I would also be interested in going into water resource engineering because I think that is a big facet of EnvE, correct me if im wrong.
    The thing is though, I never thought I'd become an engineer, so certain aspects of it worry me because growing up I was never really playing with legos and taking toys apart and putting them together again. You know, something you'd expect someone who becomes an engineer. Now, although that may be a terrible gauge for it, it still occupies my mind.
    My question is, what was your experience like going from a chemistry undergrad to an engineering graduate degree? Was it hard going from learning of the hard sciences to engineering? How creative and innovative to you have to be to be successful in the field?
    Sorry for the long comment, but I am just hoping to get some insight. Great video!

      @RandyLy  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm glad you brought these points up and are sharing similar experiences.
      I've always played with Legos as a kid but that never intertwined with my creativity at work as an engineer. I also thought that Legos = engineering, but it's really not the case.
      Going from a Chemistry undergrad to an engineering graduate was only difficult because I had to catch up on prerequisite engineering classes. Luckily, more than half of my graduate classmates were in the same situation as me, so we all struggled, learned from each other, and eventually graduated at the same time. Don't worry if you think you'll fail or be the only one to deal with this.
      You don't have to be creative in this field. As good or bad as that sounds, there are certain protocols that you must follow, and you can't change that. That being said, it's more of how would you approach different solutions. Even as a chemist, if you think "Why?" all the time and use some critical thinking to find a solution, engineering is very similar.

      @@RandyLy I see. I guess civil/environmental engineering is pretty distinct from other engineering disciplines such as mechanical when it comes to creativity/originality. I have spoken to other other people in civil engineering, and they too say that there isn't an insane amount of "creativity" in the field. A good bit of it is what they call "cookie cutter" procedures, which sounds similar to what you mentioned. I have no problem with that, and i certainly have no problem with me getting my creative skills better in college in my future engineering classes.
      I just hope everything turns out well and I end up enjoying the field. At the very least, I'm doing very well in calculus 2, so hopefully that's a good sign haha. Thank you for the response.

      @@strange1094 I don't know much about mechanical engineering, but with your background and interests, I think you'll be able to transition into this field fine.

      I am still in Range C and am working on getting my PE license to jump to Range D.
      When I first joined this position, I started at the minimum point in Range C. It jumped 5% now with my 2 years of experience at this job. I think they only consider past work experience when gauging whether I should have started with Range B or Range C.

    Hey randy, thank you for these informations it's really helpful.
    About the number 4 ( Masters Degree doesn't guarantee a job) Actually i have bachelor in biology and geology and i am searching for study master degree of environment
    engineering. It still a problem ? Probably i can't find a job as an environmental engineer!

    • @RandyLy
      @RandyLy  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      If you can get accepted into the Masters program and graduate with a Masters Degree, then your Bachelors is irrelevant. For example, I have a Bachelors in Chemistry and Masters in Env Engineering, but my employer only cared about the Masters in Engineering degree. Depending on the manager, it could also help because they may see you as well-diversified and know other backgrounds.

    I've worked in I formation technology for over 9 years... and just suddenly realized that my calling is supposed to be in environmental engineering... what's your advice for shifting careers and starting especially for getting into environmental engineering?..

    • @RandyLy
      @RandyLy  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Shifting careers after 9 years is going to be extremely difficult. IT to environmental engineering are very different, and you would probably have to start from the very beginning. I wouldn't recommend this if you have responsibilities and other family matters.
      That being said, you don't need to change job titles in order to help the environment. You could possibly switch jobs to use your IT skills aimed towards environment and sustainability. I am sure some tech firms have some sustainability department.

    Hey your 10th point makes me curious. Have you adopted a plant-based lifestyle? It seems being plant-based has a HUGE impact on the environment in a positive way! No worries if you're not! No judging here :) Great vid!

    • @RandyLy

      Although I am not a pure vegan or vegetarian, about 80% of my diet is plant-based. The meats I prefer are usually chicken or fish (usually cheaper than red meat anyway).
      If you saw the things I eat, you'd say I have a pretty bland diet. Imagine boiled veggies, chicken breast, and brown rice.

    • @RandyLy

      Yes, so long as the university is ABET accredited. Not every university will have that exact Environmental Engineer major but most jobs are flexible with who they hire, as long as your major is somewhat related.
