One trend I've noticed in these bear attack stories where a pistol ended the attack, the bear is on top of the intended victim and causing harm either as the gun is being fired or seconds before. The bear gets the drop on the human quite often. Reading about defensive shootings with criminals, most often, physical contact is made before shots are fired. Adjust mindset accordingly.

Some places, isn't it illegal to go "bow" hunting with just a firearm? Two quick shotgun thoughts to consider, how many bow hunters want their bored buddy, shadowing them all day, and how often does the guard practice getting a shotgun off their shoulder in ten foot to the bear split times? In this example, both bow hunters needed and used their firearms. In the next example, it's probably going to be different.
Those people screaming "use bear spray ONLY!" Have likely never even been 100 FEET away from a vehicle out in the woods. And CERTAINLY NOT IN BROWN/GRIZZLY/KODIAK/POLAR BEAR TERRITORY! Most people who are out in those areas would MUCH rather use the bear spray IF they can. But when an ANGRY BEAR is CHARGING YOU, you have a fraction of a second to make up your mind on how TO SAVE YOUR LIFE. There simply isn't time "to see if the bear spray will work". I THANKFULLY have never had ANY bear charge me. I have been close enough to hear one growl and even hear it BREATHING! The foliage was so thick you couldn't see a foot into it. So I don't know exactly how close it was. but the hairs on the back of mine and my dogs neck were standing straight up. And my 45acp was in my hand as we slowly retreated. it seemed like the longest walk of my life, even though it was only about 30 minutes. I was never so glad to be back inside my truck.
I stepped out on an old logging landing to glass and in the doghair brush right below me all I hear very close below me is a black bear clacking and low growls! There was a guy in Arizona that killed a black bear with a 380. The bear attacked his dog and they guy shot the bear with his pocket pistol. That story always amazes me.
RULE ONE: There is no other word but "stupid" for any person to ever go into the woods without a firearm and med kit, especially if you're alone. RULE TWO: If anyone ever says otherwise, please refer back to RULE ONE.
The Greenland Army fights off polar bears with 10mm out of Glock 20 pistols. Might take 5 shots, and the bear might get within 5 feet, but that's their standard last I heard. For long guns they like 30-06. And since they aren't stupid they don't waste time on bear spray.
Yeah, I carry G20 10mm with full pressure loads and hard cast bullets. Its 225 grains at 1300fps. Also use a lil stronger recoil spring for that load. The XDM is also a wonderful choice for 10mm. Get the right load, and youre approaching .41mag ballistics but with far superior capacity and cycle speed. Sorry, but bear spray is only superior for people without firearm experience. If you are a granola hiker and have no firearm experience- sure, bear spray is a better choice for you. Good luck getting it off your belt, drawn, saftey puller removed, and aimed right before that bear, cat, or bull is on top of you.
Fish and Game said this is the first year grizzlies have crossed I-15 in the southern portion of Idaho. Moving towards more populated areas where hikers will be unprepared for a grizzly.
Not sure what fish and game were thinking. I-15 runs North and South. I-15 is about 75 miles West Of Island park where hunters were attacked. I-15 heads North and slightly West of Idaho Falls. Anything south of there is desert until you get to Spencer which 20 miles from the Montana border. No Grizzly’s in Rexburg, St Anthony or Idaho Falls.
That doesn't make any sense. I believe that could have only been said by somebody does not understand the geography of East Idaho. Yes, a grizzly did cross I-15 in the Centennial Range on the Idaho/Montana border in May 2024. That area is in what locals refer to as Eastern Idaho. It is nowhere near Southern Idaho.
@@keppscrossing they probably said that because I-15 runs into Utah and Nevada, and they’ve already crossed Montana into Idaho,So southern part of Idaho .
Listen, people. this is simple. Bear spray only works if the bear is bluffing or not committed. Once the Bear flips the switch and commits no amount of spray will help not even a little. So basically bear spray works when the bear was not going to attack in the first place. Bear spray is a deterrent, not a stopper.
@@stepanbandera5206 My theory is that most people are way too worried about bears. Based on bear attack statistics from Yellowstone, the chances of being killed by a bear per day of hiking in the Yellowstone backcountry are a tenth the chances of dying in a car accident per day of driving. Anyone not fretting over how to make driving safer shouldn't be fretting over bear attacks. That's not to say one shouldn't bring protection or take the necessary precautions, just as one should wear a seat belt when in a car, but it's simply not a huge risk. Now, if you are in an area with really high densities of brown bears or grizzlies (parts of Alaska and Costal BC), or somewhere with polar bears, then the numbers might shake out differently, but I doubt there is anywhere in the continental US where the risk of a bear attack is greater than the risk of driving to the trailhead.

In the interview they referenced they had "bear bullets". They also referenced magazine reloads so I knew they were automatics. I was waiting for you to cover this. Excellent.
It's definitely an automatic. A .45 "Automatic" Colt Pistol was used; and a 10mm "Auto" was used. It doesn't mean machine gun. Its meant to referrence the pistol loading the cartridges automatically.
@cbbees1468 "It's meant to reference the pistols loading the cartridges automatically," not the firing cycle. The word "automatic" is used for both descriptions and adds confusion or argument to the conversation. Your comment goes from auto-loader to select-fire.
Bro, I always hear stories about .45 ACP and I've never heard a word about .44 special. .44 special is a ballistic twin to .45 ACP and is more often than not, is more powerful than the.45. I carry .44 special for black bears where I live. No brown bears around here. I love it because wheel guns are way more dependable and .44 spl is how you get .45 ACP ballistics from a revolver. I've never heard anyone discussing .44 spl. for wilderness carry.... Maybe give it an honorable mention? God Bless. 🇺🇲🤟
Lol. That's too funny. I was just thinking about my wife's 44spl. It's a great round. Very similar ballistics to a 45. Got a bunch of 240 cast for practice. Bought some xtp, silvertip, n PMC for defense. Tested them n they all failed. Got some federal punch n it half worked. Tried critical defense n they worked great. If I carried it in the woods it would be cast. In the night stand it's critical defense.

Hey Chuke, the location was Idaho, but very near Yellowstone, probably a grizzly attack hot spot. Maybe, an important point was their comment that the bear was bedded down, and surprised at close distance. There was nothing they could have done differently, given their activity.
I'm hesitant to be critical since he likely ended up saving his friend's life, but the guy who started to run should likely have stood his ground. The data I've seen is pretty clear, two or more adults who are together standing their ground are far less likely to be attacked. When the group separates and the bear can identify individual targets, the odds of attack rise dramatically.
@@recurrenTopology It's a tough one, I don't know what I would do, without thinking. What I meant by not doing any thing differently is that, they were bow hunting and trying to move carefully and quietly. One of the comments was about the Idaho game wardens who investigated, and apparently they concluded the bear was bedded down, very close to the trail they were on. I think it's true, that their reaction time was minimal. Who knows.
Reader's Digest, (remember that publication?) published a grizzly attack story in the early 1970's where the bear came into a camp at night and started marauding the occupants. An adjacent camp, hearing the screams of their neighbors camp, heard one female screaming, 'Help me, he's got my arm off!" I was 12 years old when my Mom gave me this story to read. Although it was terrifying, it was also fascinating and very thought provoking. I''ve had several grizzly encounters and wolf encounters in Montana and Idaho. Stay vigilant, and know that when calling elk in September, you are also possibly calling in a bear for lunch!
I remember that exact RD story. Especially the part where the woman is describing exactly what the bear is doing to her. And as I remember, the bear didn't just tear off her arm.
The term "SCAT" has a double meaning. First it is known as "feces", as in Bear Scat. Secondly, all the time growing up I heard it used as the term "Scat, Go Away". Mostly it was a word used to say "Go Away" to things like the dog, a skunk in the yard, a person lurking around...........you would say, "Scat bear, scat dog, etc".
We visited Henrys lake area back in July and rode the UTV up the Continental divide trail and hiked schoolhouse ridge where the third guy was glassing. Bear scat was all over. This story spooked me pretty well. I had buffalo bore 147gr hard cast bullets in 9mm in a sig tacops and a can of counter assault spray. But if we ever return I will be packing the shotgun with brenneke slugs. That said, we were in a loud UTV and not stalking elk quietly. Bow hunters take on extra risk.
Geez scary story!....the fact the the bear was missing an ear means the bear is a fighter and more likely to engage than head to the hills... its like seeing some huge thug in a back alley with scars all over his face with a baseball bat in his hands - you know you're in trouble. When I lived on the Flathead in Montana I knew alot of people who grew up there that sweared by a 1911 45 ACP handloaded hardcast. Most of these guys were older -40s to 60s and most said 230-250gr or 200gr +P with Unique at 1100fps.. There are alot of Grizzly bears in the Mission range and the Flathead probably there and Bob Marshall wilderness is the most besides Yellowstone in the lower 48. I used to target shoot out by McDonald Lake and there were alot of the out there. An old Salish legend in the area says a small tribe on the Flathead was wiped out by disease sometime late 1800s - early 1900s and all the dead in the tribe were not known about for some time due to their isolated location. When other tribes in the area went to the area apparently weeks later, they say there were dozens of Grizzly feeding on the dead. The legend says the Grizzly in the area developed a taste for people and are often aggressive. This was told to me by an Salish elder woman 74 years old born and raised on the Flathead Reservation
Thanks for sharing! Very interesting. We live in north vt. We have black bear very few attacks. 1911 here anyway. Great hunting has long gone in this area😢 . Stay safe.

Also, always have a Mossberg 500 with some Brenneke green lighting slugs in camp and when I’m not carrying my hunting rifle. Can’t seem to find the black magic in stock anywhere.
The moose down here are weird too, when I first went fishing in the lower 48 I was all, don’t need my gun. Nope. Wife and I were floating the Jefferson in Montana by Whitehall annnnnnd this moose bluff charged and was like 300 yards away! Never had that ever in Alaska when I grew up there. Also as you said the bears here are aggressive, it is really weird, even here in Wyoming in the mountains they get nuts. Rumors swirl that browns are now out in the prairies in Montana.
Remember the story of Mark Uptain ? They found empty pepper spray canisters when they found his body. They also found a Glock 40 with no mag inside and the magazine was several feet away.
I remember that story and I found it odd that a hunter wouldn't have accessed his rifle. Maybe it was up with the horses. But in those life or death situations, it's not easy to think logically and quickly.
I think the best argument for bear spray is that the skill level required for properly deploying it is much lower. There’s no question that a firearm is the more effective bear defense tool when deployed properly, but not everyone is going to put the time in to get to the level of proficiency that makes it more effective than bear spray. I know people will say they should just go to the range but the reality is that many people won’t, and for those folks bear spray is probably better.
After seeing a bear a few years ago on a solo hike, I has a 10mm that week. Ask the botanist in Alaska how well bear spray works... you can't because the bear took him out.
Bear spray is a joke in bear country. For the simple reason the wind may be blowing your way .I call people in big bear country with nothing but bear spray bear food 😅.
Another good source for 45 ACP in comparison to 10 mm, is the work done by the lake Great Paul Harrell. Please check out his channel and look for that subject matter in the search box. You might be surprised at what he determined.
All species of bears are crazy this year! We had the first Black Bears in Western Kentucky migrate into our area from Eastern Kentucky , earlier this year. It's ridiculous.
This attack was about 1 hr northeast of Idaho Falls. The bears are aggressive here because they are not hunted. Last year we had 2 tags for a population of over 500 bears in the region. The feds shut down the hunt right before the opener because of a lawsuite from people who dont live in bear country. If you live where these bears thrive carry big pistols with solid slugs and practice .
This question was in my mind also. As I have a 6” 357 with 180 gr xtp. Loaded pretty stout. I have heard the argument that this is a better round than the 10mm? I have never personally used a 10mm so I can’t speak about them. Just curious as well.
I live in N ID, and bullet selection is MORE important than caliber!! I appreciate you mentioning bullet construction, and I would love to know exactly what these guys were using in their guns. So many guys, even the majority of guys, just think because they have a 10 mm, they can load anything in it, ball, hollow points, and it'll work just fine. They are delusional! I would rather have a 38 special with a hardcast semi wadcutter, then a 10 mm with ball or hollow points in it. Ball rounds are soft lead, with thin jackets. They are NOT "bear rounds". With the right placement they MAY still work, but if you're going to bother to buy a 10mm, or you're using a 45 ACP, for God sakes get the right ammo. And it doesn't have to be maximum loaded fire-breathing rounds either. A well-constructed hardcast at at 900-1000 fps, will do just fine. You are far better off with a more moderately loaded round, that you can control for multiple shots. I see guys that buy a 20 round box of expensive hot ammo, and never practice with it. The amount of guys that can actually control a 454 Casull with hot ammo, or even a 10 mm with hot ammo, for quick multiple shots, is a very tiny percentage. Check your ego at the door of your gun shop, and get some ammo that will do the job for YOU, and shoot some of it so you know what to expect.

This is a reasonable hypothesis but do you have any studies which back this up?
This.
@@recurrenTopologyYou'll have to go afield and come up with your own theories
Mr. Poindexter 🤓

Who knows.
Bear spray at that short distance would almost certainly incapacitate you before the bear.
I think having to contend with more insects has an effect. Nice to know the spray fans are willing to bet your life on it
Hilarious. A bear will use pepper spray for seasoning to eat you.😅
Geez scary story!....the fact the the bear was missing an ear means the bear is a fighter and more likely to engage than head to the hills... its like seeing some huge thug in a back alley with scars all over his face with a baseball bat in his hands - you know you're in trouble.

Remember the story of Mark Uptain ? They found empty pepper spray canisters when they found his body. They also found a Glock 40 with no mag inside and the magazine was several feet away.
Mark's client ejected the magazine in a panic.
I remember that story and I found it odd that a hunter wouldn't have accessed his rifle. Maybe it was up with the horses. But in those life or death situations, it's not easy to think logically and quickly.
I sense that AND a hidden argument to leave certain people defenseless for the purpose of human population control.
Bear spray is for overly curious bears getting too close for comfort, firearms are for attacking bears.
