Ray is a mad Asian genius and his face perfectly expresses the pressure and emotion of whatever he's doing. It's awesome and hysterical and powerful... just like good classical music. Man I enjoy this guy and twoset. Classical never seemed so fun
Am Australian. Am locked in my house in quarantine due to the virus that shall not be named, at the most beautiful time of the year. This brought me to tears.
0:00 The swagman sits under the tree and puts a kettle on the fire 1:12 The sheep shows up and the swagman captures and eats it 2:19 The police attempts to arrest the swagman for stealing the sheep; the swagman runs 2:34 The swagman jumps into the water and drowns; his spirit taunts the police: "You'll never catch me alive!"
This really made the music even better because you can really hear the text in the music. Thanks so much for posting this it made the piece even better.
I used to play this with my grandad before we lost him. I play violin, he played guitar. This brought back a flood of memories and emotions that I definitely didn't expect to be feeling today XD Absolutely beautiful, I loved this
Just saw his performance this week, he played this piece for encore. The harmonic in the silence concert hall was unforgettable. Great work! Looking forward for your next show.
LeoCantThinkOfAName I went to his concert a while ago and it was just like you said! Truly unforgettable, I’m glad he has posted that version on his channel now :) also at that concert when he finished the piece the hall actually stayed silent for a while, allowing the ending elegy to kind of echo and slowly fade away, it was absolutely amazing . (it was the first time I ever see that happen most of the time people just clap immediately afterwards)
The intensity when people play their instruments is so gosh darn beautiful. I truely love the facial expressions and body movements. the crazy eyes and sweaty foreheads just make it so real for me
For some reason this evokes so much emotion, and I can't exactly pinpoint any specific feeling-- maybe nostalgia? Adventure? Happiness? It's the perfect blend.
Well done- to watch them, you would think they were all tense, but they're not. To play with that quality of sound, precision, and speed, you must be totally relaxed.
I only found this video yesterday in the night at 2am after paryting. And it's one of the most beautiful, joyfull and positive interpretation of such a horrible and tragic human story. What a beautiful arrangement and delivery!!! I cannot stop crying over this beautiful cheeriness.
I know this song has a sad story behind it... however, I absolutely love it how Ray and this group play it! It is one of my favorite songs, thanks to them 😄
I can't believe I just spotted Mr Grosz on viola!!! He's almost "gluing" this quartet together with his skill and beautiful viola made before Chen's violin! 1:43 is all the proof you need! (or the whole track hehe).
For those who adore Ray's facial expressions, there's a wonderful reason why they are like they are. A huge part of an orchestral conductor's job is conveying to the orchestra the EMOTION of a particular passage. One way they do this is with facial expressions, along with body movements and of course the baton. So Ray here is conducting his colleagues, leading the emotional character with his use of facial expressions. His dances also show when things should be heavy, light, or groovy as shit. This is top notch conducting. As well as playing the violin. No big deal.
Can't describe how much I love this. The way they look and smile at each other, they're together happy and cheerful for this amazing adventure they're created. Is there something more beautiful than creating musically with people?
Ray and his string quartet needs to be on either Asian or American's Got Talent. This is a beautiful song and it's rarity that it can be played many different ways if it's played right and Ray proved it here. I LOVE this song!!!! Don't let classics, such as this song, die with the past.
Those are the first parts of the Berlin Philarmonic Orchestra.... I think both Ray and them can aspire to play in something better than Asia or America's Got Talent
I heard this on ABC Classic in Australia for the first time on the last day of Australian Music Month and it absolutely took my breath away. I had to pull over to the side of the road, I had tears in my eyes because it was perfection- the playing, the energy, the quality of the recording and the arranging. Well done, bravo
Ok. This was absolutely phenomenal- like classical music is awesome and all but this piece and how its played- I was just awestruck, I never thought waltzing matilda could be played like that, this is truly inspiring, thank you Ray!
Thank you so much Ray, and Co I’ve never ever heard this played so utterly incredibly before...... I really really love ❤️ this. Please stay safe and well too xxx Mags
Being Aussie and hearing different versions of Waltzing Matilda (especially the country bumpkin way 😁), this was a pretty incredible arrangement! Cool stuff!
Damn Ray you better dip that bow in water bro before you start a fire! Absolutely smoking performance and I love how you used your body to accentuate the music just a brilliant performance to you and all the musicians who brought this to light!!
wow this is so amazing...such an old song...they made it sound so elegant....just imagine this as the theme song in some kind of kingdom game or something ...amazing !
Even Ray's hair is expressive. It keeps getting fluffier through the piece.
I would get so distracted by hair falling on my forehead. I would have probably used a hairband in his place.
@@Fidi987 He's too into his playing to notice anything else ;)

So it does! 🙀

tbh it didn't even register as harmonics to me because of how clean and simple he made it sound, wow

When your second violin is BPO concertmaster. Lucky man.
And the violist is also BPO 1st viola principal :p
If Ray's expressions could be turned to music, this is it.
I love how Ray's facial expressions are going through into this piece. It's so passionate and amazing. At 3:06, the finale begins.
God has blessed him with an amazing gift! I’m so thankful that he shared it with the world!❤

The music is intensely passionate! I can't even remember how many times in a row I've watched this. I'm getting the album! Thank you, Ray Chen!
A virtuoso, and an extremely funny guy. I can't stop watching him, one video post after another..., he is hilarious, and a grand master, yet so young.

Just amazing! Four master musicians totally in harmony with one another. It’s amazing how God gave such power and soul to music.

One of the most joyful pieces of music ever written.
It felt like Ray have arranged the music and his expression felt like he is ensuring everyone played to his creative piece he developed.
Yes, he did arranged this piece solo, and quartet.

Such a classic performance, can’t get enough of his facial expression !!
Waltzing matilda Is one of most beautiful tune ever composed. The text is embarrassingly silly but the melody is a miracle.

Ray rock'in out. I love his music. So fun and really really hard to play! He makes it sound so easy and free.
My husband who doesn’t really do classical.. was like omg this is amazing... and I agree! Well done 👍
