The name “Devil’s Trill” comes from a dream Tartini had, where the devil appeared before him and asked to be his servant and granted all he desired. Tartini decided to give the devil his violin to test his skill, whereupon the devil proceeded to play the most wondrous melody Tartini had ever heard. Upon awakening, he frantically tried to write down the melody he had just heard but could not for the life of him remember how it went. He often lamented this fact throughout his entire life. The devil's blessing is often a curse in disguise.
In Tartini’s own words:
“How great was my astonishment on hearing a sonata so wonderful and so beautiful, played with such great art and intelligence, as I had never even conceived in my boldest flights of fantasy. I felt enraptured, transported, enchanted: my breath failed me, and I awoke. I immediately grasped my violin in order to retain, in part at least, the impression of my dream. In vain!”
- Broadcast live at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam on 17th February 2019 with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta

Good onya Ray made my heart race buddy. Dynamic.
hello
40 hours a day
No one coughed...
That's a big success you know
When people forget to cough during a performance, the performer has created a spellbinding effect on the audience.
Coughing is not possible when the music takes your breath away.
10:39
Sagolel4797 FUCK
Right as I was reading this I heard a cough at 2:27 LOL
It's really not fair for someone to be so talented and skilled WHILE looking that good.
I’m sure you plucked that thought out from Brett and Eddy’s head. Lol. (Those two are really adorbs though. Haha.)
He looks alright.. Not like.. that good.. He plays well tho
@@HuyHoang-bw8lz True, he looks like my uncle to be honest 😂
AND a 15 million dollar strad violin.
On LOAN bitch!!!
I just burned my dinner because I was too busy watching him play
TIMING. You need to practice TIMING!
I was so absorbed by the music that I put my ukulele on my shoulder and pretended it was violin... now I can't get my brother to delete the video 🙄
JAJAJAJAJ it worth it
Jajaja that was funny! Sorry about your dinner! Jajaja
Mom: I allow it
Tartini didn't see the devil; he saw Ling Ling!

I saw Ray yesterday playing this piece at his concert in Tilburg. His sound is even a hundred times more beautiful live than it is in the video.
You're so lucky!
@FUSION HAMMER Nope, the ideal way to hear this kind of beauty is exposing your all body to the vibrations, to the energy, of the Musik. You have to experience to understand.
Wanna hear that too

I miss irl music 😥
It’s extremely hard to get a standing ovation out of a European audience. Congrats Ray. I t was very moving.
Not the dutch, they always stand, even when they shouldn't, in other European countries you are right.
Va MVra
Oh
Thanks
Us poor young people with the standing tickets will always give standing ovations :D
But jokes aside, at least here in vienna, i have witnessed it several times.
Lugansky, wang, schiff, trifonov... They never fail to get all the able bodied audience on their feet. I thjnk the longest applause i experienced was after Lugansky performed Rach 3. That was a solid 10 minutes i think
In Italy we are good to performers we give em a standing ovation usually
@@Giulia-dc7ml in italy we are used to great classicals performers so it's very hard to get a standing ovation. Some countries have little to none classical music history so performers are more appreciated (as it shoud be)
Reading the first comments I realize, if you're not a twoset violin follower, you won't understand half of the comments and classical music jokes here and everywhere. I follow them for a long time now so, it's time well spent... That and of course violin PRACTICE! 😀
I know like Ling Ling jokes

During the cadenza, it really felt like the Devil was on stage. Incredible
It felt like he was playing the first, second, and viola section all at once😱.

That's terrible.

I was thinking “Miraculous Mandarin,” but he’s probably Cantonese in descent.
TwoSetViolin needs to make a vid on this performance and that crazy technique Ray use. This is crazy wonderful.
I second this @twosetviolin
@@meg4194 I don’t think it works cos it’s not twitter
I’ll bet that when he was done playing, the violin needed a cigarette...
Mike Johnson ???
lol i bet he did
This remind me to 1900
Now that's an appropriate and very humorous comment!!
@@lotusbuds2000 u ruined it 😂😂😂
I was like 13 years old when I first heard this sonata and had a tremendous impact in me, it became one of my all time favorites. I feel that hearing this interpreted by Ray is one of the best gifts life has ever given me. Ray is undoubtedly an amazing virtuoso, but what makes him so special is that, besides being a wonderful, wonderful person, he plays from his very core and soul. He reaches for your heart and either squeezes it or holds it in the most beautiful way.
Paula - hey try Anne Sophie Mutter's. She's unparalleled when it comes to Devil's trill
Hi Paula, I'm another Paula here....sooooooooo agree with your comments.
@@HuyHoang-bw8lz Hello Huy, you know, I used to like ASM's playing a lot, but lately have fallen out of love with her playing ....for several reasons....

Wow, here is the real sacrilegious boi...
Making this beautiful Baroque era sound like it was made in the 20th century.
Good job Ray.
Kreisler's edition, so this is the 20th century version.
Plus the fact that it was written in the 700s doesn't mean it has to be played in that period's style, that's a common stereotype artists nowadays know to avoid in many case.
If you want baroque's renditions look for them, don't expect every artist's vision to coincide with your historical knowledge
Some nice 700s music
@@diegeigergarnele7975 knowing what the composer or author of any media will always benefit the end result no matter what interpretation the artist shows the audience
don't be an edgelord...are u also those people who say NO VIBRATO ALLOWED FOR BACH
Lol true, maybe Perlman's the best rendition for Baroque performance
Stunning performance Maestro Chen, I am a 73 year old lifetime musician but beginning violin, yes at this late date. I follow you avidly. Bravo!
Go for it, Rob! I specialize in teaching adult violin students, and it is so rewarding to see the pleasure it gives them to be able to play the violin. My oldest so far was 81 when he started, and he learned well enough to complete book 4 Suzuki.
Bravo! How are things progressing?
@@cletedavis5849I loved your comment so much ! Very inspiring. Keep up the good work.
Now that Ray is a bit older, a more masculine bravura appears in his playing, which I find really caps off his artistry. He is playing from the soles of his feet, rather from his head now.
Huh
Wat

Ray what the heck man. That Cadenza f*cked me up. You're amazing.

It is amazing to watch his fingering with his left hand. His hand is so relaxed.

Bravo! Love you, Ray. Could listen to you play all day.
I first watched this because I was crushing on Ray in his video with TwoSet - now I've come to genuinely love this piece and violin concertos in general
I think we found ling ling... What an incredible performance. Amazing Ray, amazing.
Amazing performance!
Ling Ling better watch out lol
Plot twist: Ray is ling ling
No doubt.
OH GOD YOUR PROFILE PIC... it needs to be burned
Ray is Ling Ling's teacher.
Bahaha 2SetViola - I am ‘viola gang’
Unbelievable performance Ray😮 Tartini would proud of you!
Finally an interpretation I’ve been looking for. I will always marvel at the sound of a Stradivarius.
He plays with reverance
This is my favorite interpretation. His playing is just sweet like caramel but his passion makes it’s feel like he really has sold his soul to the devil. This cadenza made me feel authentic fear. I had to look over my shoulder; I’m watching this at night.
I’n working on a scholarship essay while listening to this for the first time and that was the worst mistake of my life...my god...Once that cadenza came on, my full attention was on to Ray’s playing. It felt like I was in a trance. Jesus christ.
Whenever I write with this on, the forlorn atmosphere infects my writing. It's insane. This is one of the few pieces of any art/literature that can bring tears to my eyes. Played wonderfully by Ray Chen. I usually go back and forth between Anne-Sophie Mutter and Ray Chen on this piece.
What a perfect thing to wake up to.
Me tooo....mmmmmmm...lovelinessss
I have to say Mr. Chen's interpretation is the cure to my seasonal depression.
Ray is my favorite interpreter of pieces with some darkness and drama to them. The way he plays the fast trill part, I can imagine the Devil himself playing it to Tartini.
I come watch Ray play this beautiful piece of music when I feel awful and it heals me. In music like this there is no room for pettiness, grudges, or small minded arguments. There is just the music. It carries me away.
The music took my breath away
I hope you got it back!
Those trills so sooooo freacking clean
For anyone interested, this is a translation of the Dutch at the end of the video (just because the narrator calls Ray a beast tbh):
Violin player Ray Chen and the Devil's Trill sonata by Giuseppe Tartini, arranged for violin and string orchestra, and the string orchestra was here the Amsterdam Sinfonietta lead by concert master Candida Thompson. *You need to be a bit of a beast to play this piece like this.* Ray Chen, who by now has been upstairs, up the stairs, and already down the stairs, two, three steps at a time, and he reports to the ensemble again. I will now reveal that you will hear some more about this soloist, Ray Chen, together with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta.
sleeping with this sound is wonderful
he also looks like the devil is possessing him too
but really great playing
I mean.....if you aren't playing like Satan has possessed you, are you even playing it right?
a youtube premium ad in the middle of the piece? the chance of me getting youtube premium dropped form however much it was to literally 0
Ray is such an amazing storyteller... I can always SEE the Music when he plays. Such an experience, this also happens in his rendition of the Tchaikowski Concerto, where he describes a hero (in an interview about his interpretation)
ПОТРЯСЯЮЧЕ!❤❤❤
I've listened to many other recordings of this, and very few manage to capture the intensity and bravura that Ray does. This will likely remain my "reference recording" for a long time.
i cant get over the cadenza
Every time I listened to Mr. Chen's playing I felt like this video deserves more views. Should be way more than 200k.
It deserves 1B.
The ads in the middle of video is SACRILEGIOUS
love u~~~Ray, from Korea~~^^♡.
This is the best that I've ever seen of him. So much depth. Ray Chen is really growing! Superb!
Really enjoyed the ad 7 minutes in
when i first listened to this piece, i was very bored out, but then i didn't even notice that im still continuing listening and watching ray play, until i reached half way through the video
Violin is such a precious instrument...
Agreed.
quite literally as well lol
Ray is such an incredible musician. His playing has such a full and rich sound to it too... clearly some who has mastered his potential well and respects the instrument he plays as well as the music.
The beauty of Tartini. I aspire to be as great as Mr. Chen right here!
We can watch it online only a few days after your actual performance. Thank you, Ray.
Ray is one of the few musicians I've seen play this piece with such emphasis on the high note at 13:27 and it just evokes so much more emotion. A powerful culmination that explodes with passion and I am LIVING for it. Can't get enough of this rendition.
Ling ling brought me here. Amazingly played Ray, new fan here 🎻
Oh man he's so handsome, I guess lots of women/men love him.
Alright, that sets a new standard. If you don't break at least 1 bow hair during the cadenza...you FAIL!!! YOU GET TO START OVER!!!
what's a cadenza? when does it start?
@@anikadumandan6899 a cadenza is a part in music where the soloist shines. Nobody else plays but them.
You can play it your way, or the way it was written.
Just skip to around the end, when he's playing by himself, you've got it.
Irish Wrist Watch it starts at about 11:34
So no one will comment about the fact that the guy at Ray's left totally looks like Uncle Fester got straight out of the Adam's Family to play the viola ?
P.S.: No offense, btw, if you ever read that : I think you look awesome in your own way !
You‘re right he does look like him
I KNEW I WASNT THE ONLY ONE WHO THOUGHT THAT
or, if you’ve seen the live alice in wonderland, he looks like those twins
And his score titles reads "Tchaikovsky" on the left page and "Por una Cabeza" on the right lmao
Violists being violists
I can feel the presence of devil when he plays..such a talented guy!
So in tune, so much concentration, and emotion...
10:38 obligatory cough.... every concert has one :P
If I could ever play so beautifully then I'd cry during this piece......so emotional!
The cadenza starts at 11:35
Absolutely beautiful!
Ahir , Kerson Leong , amb Devil,s Trill amb Sonata Tartini and Kreisler , tambe sensacional
My favorite interpretation is Anne Sophie-Mutter's, but Chen really played this piece so well. His virtuosity and brilliant musicality evident.
Absolutely beautifully played! Thank you Ray
absolutely lovely!
That description, it makes me remember the time I heard a very beautiful melody in a dream. I woke up and it was still in my mind...but it just disappeared the moment I touched my violin. I couldn't remember it anymore, it was just there a second ago, but I just can't seem to remember it.
Beautiful!!
Ray Chen always looks and sounds great!
Beautiful!
This kind of repertoire and chamber setting turns out to be perfect for Ray. Outstanding musicianship and sound production here, and more controlled mannerisms than usual. Reminiscent of the great ensemble playing by Gidon Kremer and his Baltica group. I greatly look forward to more of this kind of playing from Ray.
Fantastic !!!!!!!! One of the best pieces I have ever heard!
Simply beautiful.
Glorious. Absolutely Glorious.
This is jaw-droppingly amazing.
Beautifully Played!
Absolutely incredible
ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHING
I'll be honest, I was playing this video to check the sound quality of my speakers and then let it play in the background while I did other things. You know it's good when it strikes your attention and focus and you immediately wander back to watch the rest. Never heard of this piece before btw but that was wonderful. I'm a new fan Ray!
After listening to this extraordinary performance, I need to share that Ray looks just like my dad who passed at age 26, a young and promising Chinese-Japanese violinist and conductor. Just wanted to express how much meaning it added to the extreme beauty of this performance.
That was amazing Ray.
Truly wonderful!!!💖👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
