As an ex kitchen manager at Spoons, the fish comes in frozen, we defrost it in the refrigerator. It is floured and battered fresh by hand and deep fried when ordered. You’ll. know if it hasn’t been defrosted properly as the fish will curl in the fryer. Tinned mushy peas microwaved, frozen McCain chips. Good value for money

Its amazing how many people dont realise spoons actually batter the fish. Mind you, there are some who believe microwaves 100% of the menu

I was in Stirling Witherspoon one afternoon and the offer was fish and chip special.with garden peas and a drink for under five pounds......it was first class so tasty and well presented .l will be back ......yummy.
As an American in UK, I frequently eat at Wetherspoons. It is usually a solid hearty meal at an excellent price

If you're ever in England (or more widely the UK), don't go to Wetherspoon's looking for fish and chips. You want to find a high quality fish and chip shop or cafe.
In South Australia instead of mushy peas we have salad and coleslaw.
Same here in the northeast US. We LOVE our coleslaw with fish & chips. Roll & butter usually as well.
You can’t complain at them, pretty descent and good value. Plus the app is a godsend. Cheers to you both.
My local weatherspoons dont do refillable drinks no more, they used to.

We have a large Wetherspoons in Ormskirk and all the students from Edge Hill University can eat there every day and have one good meal that will keep the wolf from the door cheaper than they can cook back at their student digs. That's great for them and their parents knowing they are eating and socialising.

I used to work in a spoons kitchen yeeaarrss ago and I wouldn't wish that job on my worst enemy. Could have just been the one I worked at, but it was hellish. Hats off to anyone that sticks it out. Food is what you expect for the price, if not better sometimes. I used to enjoy fish Friday and Steak club because it was real raw food being cooked to order and not stuff in the microwave.
Have to say I've never had a bad meal at Spoons over the years but I feel your pain - I've personally found that in pub/restaurant/hotel work on the whole. Hard slog for very little reward!
One thing to add? your last statement I.E "The chips were NOT chip shop chips" It's not a chip shop. thankfully they are better thn most F & c
shops.
I always expected the fish and chips at Wethers to not be high quality, not in a snobby way i just didnt see for the price that it would be that good until i saw one come out to someone and it looked amazing, i had it next time and it is some of the best fish and chips ive had recently, very impressed with it for the price, especially in that afternoon deal, not that i can get there in the afternoon!

Had Cod & chips with mushy peas at several Wetherspoons pubs all over the UK & I always enjoy the meal. The value for money is excellent in this day & age 😋
Yep the fish is proper Cod and is 100% made in freshly made batter before frying... and the pizzas are all handmade too at a proper pizza station... they do not skimp on ingredient quality as any savvy business knows you can't fool the public anymore... it's all buying power value and extremely well run as a business. No end of line beers just an awesome procurement team with a very large wallet.

You just cant whack the value for money at wetherspoons. 1.25p cup of tea/ coffee With endless top ups and a warm place for the old biddies to hang out all day.
Love it! I can hand on heart say I have never had a bad meal at Spoons! Their pizzas are fab too! My son and I went to Bute Park in Cardiff at Christmas with friends to see the light displays and omg, the food village left a very bitter taste in my mouth. We had the equivalent of one large pizza (in single slices) and a small portion of McDonald style fries for £65!! No drinks, that was it! We went to Spoons the next day where the food was not only better but came to no more than £40 for 4 full meals and drinks!
I'm glad they fixed the two coffee machines behind you, the flashing yellow lights were distracting. It looked like the used coffee grounds containers were full and were emptied.
As for the chips, I have seen boxes of McCains chips being delivered at one Wetherspoons when seeing them unload the lorry when I was having breakfast (The Mile Castle, Newcastle).
Cup of tea with chips everytime for me too ☕. In fact last night my girls and I got a takeaway of fish and chips, I made a cup of tea and we had it on the beach. Perfect 👌
If using those salt sachets, Pour a bit of the salt in the palm of your hand and pinch it onto your food with your fingers to spread it more evenly. I’m sure Spoons used to have salt & pepper shakers though.
I really like spoons food, I always go for the bbq chicken melt, the pizza from there is actually really nice, the curry is nice too, you cant moan for the price when you can get a drink with it and usually pay an extra £1 for an alocholic drink

Last time I had fish and chips at a local weatherspoons I noticed chips uncooked. Sent it back a number of times still got chips they hadn’t bothered cooking.

Having fish and chips at various restaurants in the UK, I don't see much difference in what you get vs the American "Fish Fry". Fish fry's are I think, better in New England than say Florida or California where you don't see them as much.

Best Chippy ive been to is Arnside Chippy. Some nice views over Morecambe Bay too.
Go to the spoons in Monmouth its quite nice just quite expensive and limited on supplies
I work in a spoons kitchen the fish comes in frozen we defrost it the mushy peas are from a tin and the chips are frozen lol batter is made in the morning from a standard batter mix where you add water

What I always like about spoons is you know what your getting. It's not amazing or high end dining. But it's decent, fresh, and in my experience served nice and hot and very affordable. Can't go far wrong
I’ve been to Great Yarmouth walk pass that. That’s the bus station that they have cars go under to hear the sound of the exhaust and really loud
Next time your in Scotland, goto small village called Anstruther for top fish n chips and then fish works in seaside town in Largs
Canadian here, I really miss the good fish'n'chips drenched in malt vinegar with proper mushy peas I've enjoyed on my many trips all over the UK.
Really good fish'n'chips here in our Maritime provinces (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI) but sadly no decent mushy peas anywhere.

Here in BC, NO-ONE knows how to do traditional fish and chips. The locals seem to think it’s great here but the batter is almost always yellow, smooth and chewy - much more like tempura than the real stuff. Plus it’s never fried in lard or shortening like it is in a proper English chippy. Also, the fish portions are always extremely stingy as they use offcuts which resemble short, stubby batons rather than a whole side of the fillet. So they tend to give you two or three pieces which just means pounds of chewy batter and not a lot of actual fish.
A couple of expats have recently opened a “traditional British chip shop” nearby which I’m going to try at the weekend but I’m pretty sure the chips will either be skin-on (wildly popular here for some reason but always taste of soil if you don’t bother to peel the spuds) and too thin.
Whenever I go back home to the UK, fish and chips from my old local chip shop is the first meal I have!
Don’t forget the “non-brewed condiment” too - no respectable British chippy uses malt vinegar! :)

Cod and chips, haddock and chips in Scotland! I like the deals in the afternoon, if your struggling financially a small fish and chips including the drink with side order of bread and butter is great value. Refill coffee and a very cheap but delicious desert for after, doesn’t cost a fortune and quite nice
Whenever I go with friends for a meal I always recommend Wetherspoons as I have found that their meals, especially the fish and chips , to be of the highest quality but not only that, the service is prompt, the staff are always friendly, the prices are remarkably cheap especially as usually there is a pint of beer included in an already cheap price. Because I am convinced that Wetherspoon's set a benchmark for the rest of the industry (at working class customers level) I have recently become a shareholder in the Company.

The last time I had a weatherspoons fish and chips was in Manchester City centre, 2008 or 2009. The fish I had was defrosted but then left, I knew once I started eating it didn’t smell right. Only had a small amount and I was poorly for days. Told the restaurant and I was ignored. This does look nice, if I’m ever in Great Yarmouth and feel brave, I might try
Fish chips and more on marine parade. If your in Great Yarmouth there’s no better. Except the mushy peas and pie shop on the market but if your after a good one you can’t go wrong.
Top tip Tim ....open the batter a little with the fork so that on squeezing the lemon flavours the fish ....🎉😘
I always spent a few days in Yarmouth,every July.Been in the Trollcart many times.Never every eaten in there( as always busy).Ive had F&C in the Red Lion( Theford) with a pint of Guiness.Not too bad.Cost around £10.Hopefully them deals will be still on in the summer.👍

For a spoons that didn’t look too bad. The usual generic bag chips but I was impressed with the fish.
I had chippy for my dinner (lunch… I’m a northerner 😂) and I had to have a cup of tea with it. I think it’s an old school thing to do but it does feel right haha.
Had fish and chip with mushy peas at Wetherspoon Velvet coaster Blackpool, it was dreadful, I would of asked for a refund but was tired, the batter was like eating a rock and when I finally got to the fish, there was only a small amount there, chips were good, and the peas to. Going to try again soon, it’s lovely on the top floor with a fabulous view. ❤️❤️❤️
Yeah that spoons is hit and miss because of how busy it is everything feels either rushed or under par than other spoons, and more expensive!

In recent years Wetherspoons has improved their fish and chips alot. Never beat a proper chippy however, esp the chips. I usually have chicken tikka masala when we go to Wetherspoons, you can't beat it. I've eaten it in many places over the years and ready made ones from shops and cooked my own from recipes and shop bought pastes. But no where has ever beat a Wetherspoons chicken tikka masala, I absolutely love it.
Mate. Wetherspoons curry is better than it really ought to be. For anyone not a fan of spice, I'd ignore the chilli rating as it's complete bollocks. Very delicious though!!
Can't wait until late July when I am in Yarmouth again. Will try Wetherspoons for the Fish & Chips.
Glad you enjoyed it, I find it's a bit of a lottery with Fish & Chips at Spoons sometimes good but sometimes less than ordinary. The Fish isn't fresh but frozen but then again it isn't a Fish & Chip shop, agree the midweek afternoon deal great value (as a rule).
Nice one... I`m a rock and chips guy myself.. always with the mussy peas. Not many places in Yarmouth sell rock, the one across from trollcart does... But not a cod man, but I will and i really enjoy it at the trollcart, yes a cup of tea and some bread and butter and i come out very happy. Something about the meal "Just works"....

I have this meal about once a month, my only criticism is that on one occasion my wife's fish was a little cold in the middle, the staff were great, they apologised and cooked her a fresh meal, which was fine. I have the large meal with a pint of bitter and I think it's about £8.50 on the weekday meal deal, when you consider that a pint is around £2.70 in 'spoons, you're getting the large meal for about £6, which is an incredible price. Glad you both enjoyed your meal.
That is because the morons in the kitchen failed to read the cooking instructions properly when they chucked it in the microwave for you. They didn't cook her a "fresh meal", because they either re-cooked it or just threw another frozen offering in the microwave for you.
Can't go wrong with it really for the price and looks very tasty indeed. I've not had the Fish and Chips in Spoons but very keen to try now although the best Fish and Chips I've had in a pub would be The Murderers in Norwich which sets a very high bar!
Spoons for food there's good stuff on the menu, I've always been keen on their Pizzas, also enjoyed the Large Mixed Grill, The Half Chicken with Chilli Sauce or The Empire State Burger.
They are defo tinned peas which is fine. Fish looks lovely
You can never go wrong at wetherspoons. They don't try to be something they are not. some many places in my city with high prices and false reputations.

Last two lunch visits to Spoons in Maldon Essex have had the fish and chips on both occasions and was pretty impressed, it would of cost twice as much from local chippy and no drink

Being that you prefer your peas extra mushy, you could easily use your fork to mush them up some more. I know it's not ideal to have to do some extra work for food that you're paying for, but it is a pretty simple solution.
Wetherspoons offers incredible food at an incredible price. Love a burger meal or fish and chips there. How on Earth anyone can complain is beyond reason lol.
Only time I complained was last week as both meals were cold. They were nice about it and replaced them.
Although it really shouldn't have happened.

I like Weatherspoons as the buildings are usually old buildings although not always restored expertly.
There's all damp on the ceiling in my Weatherspoons local.
The Mushy Peas looked nice!
The chips in my Weatherspoons aren't crispy enough for me.
And it's not first class Fish but for the price you pay in Weatherspoons it's fine.
The plates you & Gaby were eating off had just the same design on them as the plates in my local Weatherspoons!

The harbourside Francine's and jaws in Plymouth do amazing fish n chips or capn jaspers for amazing burgers and hot dogs
Vinegar first on your chips followed by the salt this way the salt will stick to the chips

You did soak the batter in lemon first most people I know cut the batter first and put the lemon on the fish.keeps the batter crisp.looked good though .

I lived in England for many years and I remember mushy peas being everywhere! However I've lived in Scotland and it's not such a thing here and If you do get them they aren't the same!
