Just watched the video of Cromer it really does look a real nice place love the zig zag steps down to the beach and a small library and those lovely cottages and most of all how the church stands out thanks for that till the next one 😊
Hi Terry, it would be nice to review Travelodge Central Croydon. There are many council guests here, and Sunday nights are cheap here. Are you on "What's App" and I will send you photos of the ground floor us regulars, call the psychiatric unit. Holes in the ceiling!!!
The problem with many old hotels: when built the main bedrooms were only on the first 2-4 floors and the public ground floor was grand. The rooms further up were for servants and hotel workers that lived in house so it didn’t matter they were small or the corridors were mazes. Roll on the late 20th century when no one has servants travel with them or hotel staff lived in house they were converted to additional bedrooms and the result is wildly different standards and sizes and a maze like corridors to get to them.
My wife and I stayed here a couple of years ago, and are going again this year (2023). It is a lovely old hotel with a certain charm and character. Service and cleanliness was excellent, as was the food. My wife is Gluten and dairy free, and was catered for very well. The surrounding area is lovely as well, can't wait.
I stayed there for free back in the late 1960's . Actually it was because I was working as a waiter . It was all silver service and even at breakfast time there were linen tablecloths . It was posh but coming to the end of it's heyday . At one dinnertime I was carrying a silver salver high up in the air , one handed , and fell to my knees . I kept my composure standing up again without spilling any food . All the guests clapped which broke the tension in the air from waiting . Tips were very good , one table of five or six leaving a five pound tip . Those were the days .
How lovely it is to see a grand hotel that is still taken good care of. No damp stains no broken bits and lovely clean windows. That one is going on my list for next year
At one time when you wanted room service you would pull a cord or press a button in your room and the board which you thought was something to do with electricity would flash or move the symbol corresponding to the room number out in the corridor alerting staff on your floor. It's amazing the high number of staff these hotels used to employ especially during the season.
in case anyone hasn't mentioned it, the switch outside the bathroom is a timer, typically used for a towel rail. Currently in the Imperial Hotel in Barnstaple, wish I'd had brought my GoPro, it's a really old building that too has had a makeover and looking really good.
I lived in Cromer for quite a few years and always wanted a look round. You have finally done it for me.Thank you Fun little fact. They didn’t even used to close the pier even in bad weather until after 1993 when a rig that had broken loose smashed through it at night in a massive storm. My brother and I had been on the pier only about 30mins before it happened!
That panel in the corridor was for the staff (back in the day) to know which rooms wanted a servant to attend to the occupants needs. A servant call board basically. What a grand old lady that hotel is!
My parent's house had one of those - it wasn't a particularly big house (5 beds), but in the 30's middle class families often had a housekeeper/cook and there were bell buttons in the lounge/dining room and bathroom as well as 2 of the bedrooms. Ours was still in working order when my parents moved out in 2016. The coloured piece behind the glass used to move side to side when a button was pressed
The hotel Grand De Paris in Cromer looks nice Tim ,thanks for showing us.The only thing I would say is that the room didn't seem very nice,I would want a more spacious warmer bedroom.
definitely not for me! I think for £129, the room should be warm and the 8 am breakfast with no other choice [never seen that before] it sounds like they must have high occupancy. these things can change quickly.
Watching from my own hotel overlooking calm crystal blue waters, I'm actually missing that howling North Sea wind! Thanks Tim for staying and checking out this iconic hotel, I have very fond memories of holidays in Cromer and staying at the Paris. Good to see its in reasonable nick although not so decadent and grand as it once was but if coach parties are filling the place in March and helping to keep it maintained that has to be a positive. Note: Breakfast here is served 08:30 - 2pm. 😜
Tim, I love all the vids but THIS is peak Walk With Me content. Can’t tell you how much i’ve been looking forward to another wander around a weird old hotel. Keep it up 🎉
Hi Tim. I’ve stayed at the hotel twice because I holiday with Alfa. Both times I have been to hot to sleep. Last November I asked for a fan( my room at the back was looking on to the pub). Saying that I haven’t had a sea view room. Fabulous hotel, staff are amazing.
That's a beautiful hotel! As an American, I was surprised how tiny that room was.. we generally don't have single or double rooms. You usually can have a single king size bed or two queens but the room will pretty much be the same size.
This was nice to see - well maintained, lovely old hotel, good breakfast (with lofty attitude at no extra cost!) I know I've said it before - that room had a definite M R James vibe about it! It's in the right location and the hotel is the right period! Thanks again, Tim!
@@nelliemelba4967 yh I have eyes and have seen the exact same footage as you. It's not the kind of hotel I would pay money for. Look at the windows, wallpaper and so on. Would you really pay to stay here???
Well, it depends. On the cost mainly. I like old buildings. I do photography. Maybe I have a different outlook, maybe you have different standards. I respect your opinion but each to their own.
@@nelliemelba4967 sure from the outside I just feel the inside is a little worn and rundown. As you say each to their own but I wouldn't pay to stay somewhere so unkempt and tatty. ✌️
There is so much history encapsulated within this Regency era hotel. It's the only place I've learnt where you can watch the sun rise and set from the same place, all in one go! This 1820s historical wonder steeped in history reminds me of the hotel from the film "Somewhere in Time" for some reason. 😉 Beautiful timeless hotel surrounded by a coastal haven. Thanks, Tim!
My parents lived in Watton and we would often go to Cromer. We saw the hotel being transformed over the years. We were also there the day of the storm that took a lot of frontage of the road to the right of the hotel and pier. The residents must of been terrified. But on a good day there is nothing quite like Norfolk, the sunrises are quite something.
The view from the window is lovely and the room is really quite nice. I like to sleep cold so I would likely keep the window open a crack to get that wonderful cool sea air and sounds.
I do the same, on any travel TH-cam channels I watch. Sometimes I wish I didn't, it makes my mouth water, especially if I'm eating instant noodles while watching them. Lol Cheers 👍
Lovely. I was born and bred in Cromer but left in the 80’s, fam all still there so visit often. As a local we never pronounced the S on the end of Paris and refer to it as the Hotel de Pari. Many an hour spent in the lounge bar as it was on our pub crawl route on the way to Crabs (the nightclub that was just over the way), now Lili Mai’s. I’ve never been in a room there so it was interesting to see. Thank you.
I did my first summer season on Cromer Pier in 1978, and the cast was hired as extras for a TV show filmed outside This Hotlel; it starred Patricia Routledge (I think), but I can't remember the program if anyone out there knows or remembers that would be very helpful. Thank you for the memories great seeing the pier again after so many decades.

Lovely old hotel with bags of character but sadly it's G2 listed so replacing those old windows would be a problem, if a table is reserved then there should be a flag, not great service to shoo you to another table
Tim that thing in the hallway is a call bell system from back in the old days when the floor you were on was for service staff. An interestingly enough the room you were in was likely the room for a valet or personal made of a guest because it was facing the sea. That room may have even had two people in it before it had that bath in it. Cuz something I found out kind of interesting is that British hotels until recently(1920's-1950's) considered having a bathroom in the room itself to be "American style".
Thanks Tim. An interesting assessment. Having lived at Cromer and still having connections there I've always thought the Hotel de Paris looks cold and inhospitable with its North facing position overlooking those icey Arctic winds. Being told I wasn't allowed to sit where I wanted would be a further factor for never wanting to go near the place.
Stayed here with my American wife back in 2016 during her first visit to the UK. It was about the same time of year. We had a bigger sea front room. Very charming place. I think part of an Alan Patridge movie filmed on the pier.
that lift was a schindler smart (which is quite an old lift these days) but it is epic! my college has 1 of them but you dont see many schindler smarts around anymore
I use to work there 35 years ago as a luggage porter, you should see the cellar its the size of the hotel and not in use, so much history! Even rumours it goes all the way to the church!
What a lovely, and clean hotel, I would happily stay there, though as an almost older person myself I would have to be careful not to get scooped up with one of the coach tours 😄 I would love to hear the sound of the wind as I have to have that sound running all night on my tablet anyway to offset my tinnitus which would otherwise keep me awake. I had a feeling you would get chucked off that breakfast table, that one was reserved for Ethel and Ada 😆 Thanks Tim 👍
Jane I don't understand the name of the hotel never been to Cromer. I'm a widow and sometimes go on short holidays with my daughter. Why is it hotels never seem to have twin beds I don't want to sleep with my daughter. Hotels seem to be geared to couples and families with children
@Tennis Kinsella I go with Alpha travel 4 night stay. I am single and booked single room with seaview. On arrival I was upgraded to twin room with sea view so I know this hotel have twin rooms.
On a family holiday in the late 70s I remember my parents taking us inside the Paris. There was a cage with budgerigars in the foyer which I thought was very exotic.
Actually stayed there a few years ago and it wasnt bad at all. Had a double looking out onto the sea. The only issue I remember was parking was hard to come by.
I live in a Regency era house so I sympathise with the draught issue. My bathroom isn’t a place you linger in winter! That’s one of the better maintained Victorian hotels I’ve seen. Compared to the grotty one in Scarborough, that’s a palace. The only odd thing is the total mis-match of the decor and carpet in your room!
Thanks for this review. I have fancied a stay here…but it really doesn’t look that grand to me. I’ll try the Golden Lion round the corner instead…lovely food there.
Back in the day every floor would have its own concierge and guest's would have a bell in there rooms which would signal the panel in the corridor so the staff knew which room needed service. the table would be were the staff place room service etc etc .
Thanks for the review Tim. I love Cromer! I often wondered what it was like in the Hotel de Paris. We stayed at the nearby Red Lion a few years ago in a double room with a sea view, and we liked it. In fact, we'll be in Cromer on holiday at the end of April, and we'll be back at the Red Lion again - in a double with a sea view again. We might even have the same room, which would be great! Have you ever stayed there? I'd certainly love to see you do a review.

Fabulous view but that place would be my worst nightmare, especially the breakfast room with all those people!
I went abroad on holiday to get away from the 60+ lot...guess what is was full of them..most over 70😁
Enjoyed this Tim, looked OK, nice sea view
Nice to see an old hotel that is being done up and not in complete disrepair. I take it Britannia have not got their hands on this.
5:48 that's a timer switch for the heated towel rail
oh .. didn't work tho
Great video. I wish more hotels with old buildings like this would spend the money and look after what they're lucky enough to have.
I totally agree!
I've been to Cromer it's lovely
What a great hotel beautiful detailing , great review Tim x
Is there a Hotel de Cromer in Paris?
I live in a Regency era house so I sympathise with the draught issue. My bathroom isn’t a place you linger in winter!
That’s one of the better maintained Victorian hotels I’ve seen. Compared to the grotty one in Scarborough, that’s a palace. The only odd thing is the total mis-match of the decor and carpet in your room!
Thanks for this review. I have fancied a stay here…but it really doesn’t look that grand to me. I’ll try the Golden Lion round the corner instead…lovely food there.
Back in the day every floor would have its own concierge and guest's would have a bell in there rooms which would signal the panel in the corridor so the staff knew which room needed service. the table would be were the staff place room service etc etc .
being told what time you're having breakfast and being told you can't sit there... is it fawlty towers?
Thanks for the review Tim. I love Cromer! I often wondered what it was like in the Hotel de Paris. We stayed at the nearby Red Lion a few years ago in a double room with a sea view, and we liked it. In fact, we'll be in Cromer on holiday at the end of April, and we'll be back at the Red Lion again - in a double with a sea view again. We might even have the same room, which would be great! Have you ever stayed there? I'd certainly love to see you do a review.
The Red Lion is great!
We always stay in the Red Lion because it's dog friendly but would love to give Hotel de Paris a try
I've heard it's great
