As a Brit, I kinda assumed that we were masters of the fryer. It wasn't until I had a couple of trips to Oz that I realised that the humble 'fish and chip' shop in Australia is worth 10 back in the UK.
I was blown away with the range and quality.

Greg, In Kiwiland we call a battered Savaloy a Hotdog. To remove confusion we call the Frankfurter in a roll, an American Hotdog. The potato scallop is called a potato fritter. We also get curry rolls and battered meat patties that taste great too. Calamari rings are called Squid rings here. We don't tend to get those yummy looking dim sims or the prawn ones. I tried your Oz fish and chips (or should I say fush and chups) when I was in Melbourne last year. It was very noice. Of course it has to have a generous dollop of Watties Tomato sauce. You will have to come over to NZ one day and try our takeaways (or as we sometimes call it Taak e are ways to give it a local feel).

We used to have a place like this here in California that was really good. It had everything you listed and more and was really great quality. The best part is that the owner didn't care a whole lot about money since he retired at a young age and sold the food at a very good price. It was really a shame when he decided to finally close up shop so that he could enjoy his senior years. We need another place like it again.

  • @GaryLum

As much as I like a battered sav, I always get potato scallops. Fair dinkum fish and chip shops will always add an extra potato scallop or two as well. I've got a favourite place in Canberra, when I ask for three potato scallops, I can almost always guarantee I'll come home with five of them.

what is the TYPE of fish? PLEASE dont say BASA!!! at least here the typical brit fish n chip shop the fish is traditionally Cod (Atlantic Cod, or Haddock!), Down London way, some sell 'Rock Salmon (not a salmon at all but dogfish, a small member of the shark family) which I found tasty but not to everyone's palate! Now much as I enjoyed the oz fish n chip video I would like to have known what species of fish I'm eating!

that scollop part, there juicy. usually the juice is oil hahaha i love u greg u crack me up bro. also the fish has the skin on one side to hold it better while dipping in the batter and frying. you can ask for it to be fully skinned at my chippy but its a little more of a price. u can also ask for them to fry u a fresh fish. british fish and chips has mushy peas, i prefer backed beans or chip shop curry sauce. good tuck in mate lol.

Lol in NZ they do packs for like 10 people hahaha.
That's how much we do fish and chips. One of my locals.
    10 fish
    4 sausages
    4 potato cakes
    2 hot dogs (battered sauage)
    4 chicken nuggets
    $5 chips.
I find Aussie batter very stretchy and heavy. Like batter should be light. And your sping rolls are yuck. In NZ all the spring rolls are made in the shop by the owners. So theyre still light and crispy like a proper sping rolls.
I will say miss thebol dim sim though. Hate waitung till sat to get dumpling from the market lol.

    Hi Australian !

Battered dimmies are the best! In Vic we have the Sth Melb Dim-sims, which are DELICIOUS!

Fish and chips is way better in Victoria! Flake is the ultimate fish and chips battered fish. (if it's good quality). We get battered scallops with the roe still attached too... mmmmm and normal salt for me! Get way more chips around here too.

Fish & Chip's is a UK dish, the Australians have the same dishes and cultures, as the UK Criminals where sent over to Australia on Ships then eventually the White Australian was born half British as you can see with the Australian Flag is a Union Jack they where ruled by the British Queen Elizabeth and still is to this day! 🤔🙄😂 LOL

You an outright Auusie food basic bitch! Aussie Dim Sims should just be cabbage and carrot. Those shitty, cheap arse abominations with meat are not dim sims! You moron.

If you want chicken salt have it with chicken not fish, salt, vinegar, lemon, tatare sauce, and the best tomato sauce ever watties tomato sauce is all you need for fish and chips, not chicken salt, actually lemon-pepper is good with sausages.

Some of the products look anemic because they are under cooked, especially the fish and the chips. Just my opinion. He said that the fish has the skin left on to give more omega-3 but does not say what the fish is. Only a few fish have a lot of omega-3 oil, especially trout, salmon, herrings, anchovies, sardines, and mackerel. Just out of curiosity, why fry the potato for the "potato scallop" then boil it and the deep fry in batter. More commonly known as a potato fritter. Potato cake it is not as that is made with mashed potato. Makes no sense to fry then boil a fried piece of potato, as he tells us at 5:10 or did he mean it is not fried before it is boiled then fried?

Australian fish and chips is distinctly different from British Fish and Chips, enough to be its own thing and not just a variant.
