i havent been able to finish one of his movies for almost 10 years. somehow it still hurts too much.

I don't care how Mr. Williams died, I care how he lived. He was funny & generous & kind. He worked tirelessly with the charities he held dear to him. His films made me laugh, think and cry. There are unbelievable stories of the things he did for his friends: like helping Letterman out early in his career or being the one who finally made Christopher Reeves laugh after his horseback riding accident or snapping Spielberg out of his depressed state while he was directing Schindler's List. That's how I'll remember Robin Williams because that's how he deserves to be remembered. RIP, Captain My Captain.

Jose Paulo King Every time I saw Robin Williams on TV, I would cry my eyes out laughing. When I heard that he died, I refused to believe it b/c he was the greatest comedian I ever know. After 2 weeks, I cried my eyes out knowing that it was an honor to have him in my lifetime and that I like everyone will miss him.
It's 6/12/2023 and I've watched David Letterman's show(s) ever since he started performing. I'm now 74 years old now, dealing with a couple of health issues, including prostate cancer and a sort of early Alzheimers.. I've loved all of Dave's show and so miss Robin Williams in every thing he did, on TV and in movies. Thanks, TH-cam for offering posts such as this one.

Many of whom were supposed to be protected by him, under his wing. Sexually violated Jennifer Anniston live on his show in front of millions of people. Harassed Lindsey Lohan. Violated child visitors and r***d his female staff members. Forced young male staff to show him their bodies. He is a terrible, horrible person. Why do any of you adore him? He is so, so awful. Even the laziest background Google searches would reveal to you how terrible he is. Please stop supporting this pedophilic, monstrous creep.

Thank you for mentioning those others! I was trying t think of any passing or other time Dave had been so clearly emotional and forgot about those. Robin the only individual loss that shook him so much. Regardless of who knew him firsthand or not, the whole world lost a friend the day Robin passed. What a brilliant and beautiful life to have touched people on every corner of the world.

Hard to believe it’s been TEN years since Robin took his own life. I miss him dearly and I remember the day when I heard the news that he committed suicide, it brought a tear to my eye. He was a major part of my generation’s childhood. Jumanji, Mrs. Doubtfire, Aladdin, and Good Will Hunting were some of the films that defined our childhood because of him. He’s a legendary human being and he will forever missed.

Am flabbergasted that it has been 10 years already! But all I have to do is close my eyes, and I can still see AND hear him in that cesspool of memories that is my tiny brain ... and wow, just wow, he remains entertaining!
What a gift to the human race he was. I had 2 drama classes w/ him at College of Marin-1973. Needless to say it was difficult for all of us. The instructor fortunately could not control him and we fellow students couldn't perform often. Such a tragedy to lose him so young.

Robin Williams showed that there's more to be an entertainer than just entertaining people. He changed the lives of millions of people for the better. I can't believe it's almost been a decade. The world is worse place for losing him.

It's been 8 years and 2022 is almost ending and I still miss him and he is still one of a kind. Many celebrities of my childhood have died but his is the only one I have cried ovet

One thing I love about the tribute is that he didn't focus on Williams making others laugh; the clips focused on times when Williams himself was laughing and enjoying himself.

Williams was.... jazz is to music like Williams was to comedy. strange feeling when someone you never met evokes emotion. The mark of life that touched others. Forever missed.
Robin Williams was a very kind man who suffered from severe depression. Unless you have ever suffered from depression, don't judge what he did. He decided that his couldn't continue to live with the constant pain. Depression hurts and often kills. Instead of judging him, perhaps let this be a warning and take a look around you. If your loved ones show the signs of depression, don't let it go untreated or something seriously devastating may happen. Depression is not trivial. Something you could easily turn off. I never knew Robin Williams suffered from depression, and if I knew, I would have admired him and loved him even more. As he cried, he made others laugh. That takes strength. He lost the battle with depression and that is so sad. I wish he could have found the happiness he deserved.
If your passing can make Letterman tear up on television, you were one special guy. RIP Robin.
My late husband took his own life 24 years ago-he was schizophrenic. Was I angry-yes, did I feel he abandoned me-why, of course. But what helped me through is knowing how unhappy, helpless and pained he felt over his situation that I could fullwell understand why he chose to do it. Now, because of his OWN situation, OUR SON is contemplating suicide (no, he's not mentally ill in any way but, instead, has been dealt a raw deal in life) and says one of the reasons he has not gone through with it is because he doesn't want me to have gone through losing my husband and my son to suicide. He, along with myself, are feeling helpless and hopeless over his situation. As my late mother, Lena, always told me, "Don't judge someone, Vanessa, until you have walked in their shoes-you don't know what their life is like or what hardships they face." You would do well to take my Momma's advice!!!

Dave has a way at paying tribute, morning a death, and giving the deceased their dignity. There's no pitty in Daves tribute. There's no 'oh poor me' in it. It's just a friend talking about his friend and the positive impact he had on the world.
The most loved comedian in the world. How someone can hide such pain and create so much laughter is beyond me

This reminds me of my real friends. At 53 I have 5 friends. These 5 people keep me grounded and I can simply be myself around them. What a special connection Robin and Dave had, but knowing what I heard about Robin, he probably had that connection with everyone he crossed paths with.

Yes, it was awesome, even with music a bit maudlin. Robin was one of the greats of his or any generation. **I met him once at a improvisational comedy club, showing up unannounced and then by coincidence met him outside on the way out. He was as nice as you might under any circumstances expect. This is something I heard about years ago, not a word about it since. But is something I must share in homage to a lovely, generous human being that Robin was. Starting out in show business, he had befriended an actor not know for his comedy, Christopher Reeve, and their careers started to flourish at about the same time not necessarily with the same success. Just about when Christopher Reeve starred in Superman, Robin was also starring in his first film, Popeye. Anyway, they made a pledge that if any of them would ever fall on hard times while the other might have been flush with success, they would make the effort to help each other out financially. Chis Reeve's state of paralysis was not merely an act of herculean struggle and bravery it was just as burdensome a very expensive affair. For example, Chris had to be turned over in his bed every few hours so as not to develop bed sores. And all the other overwhelming expenses you can imagine a situation Chris Reeves was in would be. Anyway, as he story went, Robin, who was doing so very well, kept his word, to what extent I don't know but I'm sure it was significant. His coming through on his pledge was emblematic of the sort of person Robin was, God rest his soul.**
Michael Safrin I didn't know that... It is unfortunate that we find out these things about people and how neat they truly are only AFTER they are gone... I wish I had known these things about Robin when he was alive. I would have enjoyed his work more.
I think anytime in the future you do get to be dazzled by his comedic genius. say when he goes into a lather about Mr, Happy, (The pet name he had for his male member) your mind will invariably make sure to create a pavlovian
link between this wonderful, heart-rendering story and the paroxysms of laughter you will be in midst of so that you get to enjoy the performance all the more.many times over.

I love Dave and Robin. Robin's death had a profound effect on me. Some of the funniest people struggle with depression. It's a great cover up. May he finally be internally happy.

What a wonderful tribute to Mr. Williams. The entire world feels like we've had the wind knocked out of us. He was so kind and thoughtful and just a wonderful human being that brought so much laughter and smiles to the world. San Francisco has greatly been saddened by his passing. He wasn't Robin Williams the actor and celebrity in this community, he was just Mr. Williams, father, husband, friend, neighbor and fellow SF Giants fan. I was lucky enough to have met Robin Williams many times throughout the years. The first time was at a SF Giants game @ Candlestick Park and several more times after that. The wonderful memories continued @ PacBell Park in 2000 and on. He was a season tix holder and true fan. He didn't sit secluded in luxury boxes or suites. He was always right there in the stands with the rest of us. It was easy for all of us to not see him as the superstar he was but as just another fan because he was so easy going, humble, lovable and so very nice to all of us. I have very fond memories of Mr. Williams and my broken heart and prayers goes out to his wife, family and loved ones. Thank you for the memories funny man. Make god laugh.

I have always loved Dave. And this is what I was waiting for since I read the AP News alert on my I-Phone as it came across last week. My reaction to Robin's death has been unlike anything I have ever experienced. He provided so much joy and inspiration. I cried harder and more often than I ever had. And a week has past, and finally, or perhaps with perfect timing Dave does his tribute. So perfect. As it built at the end, I was overtaken with sobbing, crying and then wailing. Robin and I are both 63. Maybe there is a god - he gave us Robin to help us cope. And to think it might have been a reaction to the Parkinson's drug. Hey god, we need your help again! Lots of issues need attention! Why did you take him back that way?
Sad, I know. If god exists, he must be really be bummed about Gaza and Ferguson that he decided he needed Robin to cheer him up ; )

I love Robin Williams. He has taken us all to many extremes of the emotional spectrum, along the ride that was his life. I will miss him, I will mourn him, and I will revisit his body of works to laugh with him often. He is immortal now.

I had the wonderful opportunity to meet Mr. Williams where he even did a little mini comedy bit at my expense (but it was worth it).
We were at an exhibit of the amazing artist Yamagata I at an art store located at what was at the time the Sherman Oaks Galleria mall, circa 1984.
I used to repair electronics for people and had a little flyer that I had with me (which I gave out as a business card) and I actually gave one to Robin Williams (thinking how cool it would be to repair electronics for this legend - remember I was very young).
This was right around the time when his GREAT film "Moscow on the Hudson" had just come out and his costar, comedian/Actor Elya Baskin was also at the reception.
Robin took my flyer and went up to Elya and pitched himself basically like I did, handing him the flyer asking if he might need any electronic repairs done in a very Robin-Williams high-energy way. Now looking back, I realize, as I write this, actually that I was part of an act by the great Robin Williams. I do remember a few people laughed including Elya 🙂

Williams, a man who was so open about his struggles with depression and addiction. I suffer from depression as well; Bipolar to be exact. And Robin was always very special to me, because I know millions of people like Robin and I shared the same common struggle(s). My heart goes out to his family during this difficult time. Mr. Robin Williams was never a weak man, nor a coward. Depression and suicide are two serious things that are forever linked together! The real cowards in this world are those who post disgusting things on the internet about this whole tragic outcome. Seriously, people, how much balls does it take to talk shit on a computer?! REST IN PEACE, ROBIN MCLAURIN WILLIAMS. :-)

Dave's the one late night talk show host who I believe can speak of Robin Williams the best. He's got experience, integrity, and personal history with Robin.
It's not often you can say that the world was a better place with him and a darker place without him.
He was so unique, the way he could weave in and out kf characters, his timimg, his ability to be manicly hilarious and depressingly sad in the same movie, just an incredible talent...
He was beloved, he is missed dearly.
I'll never forget the day his death was released. I mourned that day and it still hurts. I grew up watching him, he was my childhood and introduced me to true comedy. I hope his loved ones are well. He truly was a loss to society due to the enormous amount of joy he brought to others..not just viewers but the people in his life and around.

I think part of the reason it hit us so hard is the suddenness of it. If he had had a heart attack and then died a week later, it would have given people time to prepare. Also, the manner of his death hurts. That someone who has brought so much laughter into our world could be in that much pain is hard to accept.

Robin Williams is the only comedian/actor that made my stepmom laugh. She literally doesn't find anything funny. But she loved Robin. As did I. He was an important part of my childhood.

Robin Williams is one of the few famous people I truly felt sad for their passing. I was a very young boy when M and M came out, so soe of the jokes were on the "old" side, but his antics were funny. When he started to do movies, I was older and much more appreciative of his genius. And he truly was a genius. Up to now I still feel down when I think of his passing. I think of him as a crazy uncle.
How would we ever forget?? Friends will keep his memory alive. As well as his family and his fans!! :-(

Crazy to think it's been over seven years now. You just don't know what pain others are going through, sometimes until it's too late. He was a beautiful, sweet, talented and hilarious human being who had too much to bear with behind all that. I lost a close friend and former supervisor three years ago this upcoming September to suicide. Like Robin, he was such a sweet guy but I never knew what he was struggling with until his passing.
You just never know. Keep all the wonderful memories inside and know that someone who was hurting so badly is free from that hurt.

Just stumbled on this tonight…… have never been a David Letterman fan, but he speaks volumes from the heart…… to be compassionate, understanding, have an open mind then and only then can you give a heart felt tribute to a man of Robin Williams outstanding contributions in the entertainment world…… For some forty years Robin taught people from all walks of life how to laugh, most often laughing in tears of joy…… He saw the world through child like eyes as a total delightful place full of wonderment, regardless of all the horrific things going on in many countries around the world……. A genius of a man so full of electricity and those shining eyes that twinkled when he had his audience gasp from something he said and that we thought was rude or off, this only made him more determined to pull us back into his world full of comedy…..

Well done David! There will only be one Robin Williams. He could use a pencil as a prop for a half hour and have you rolling on the floor laughing. Jim Carrey tries. The biggest differences between Robin and Jim is that Robin was genuine, cared about everyone he came in contact with, visited the troops, visited children hospitals, all without batting an eye. We were lucky to experience this comic genius. Thank you Robin for making us laugh while you suffered behind the scenes. What a guy!!

Comics in Dave's league know how to control their thoughts and emotions way beyond the average guy or girl. no doubt that he is hurting plenty and has surely been dealing with all that pain and grief over the past week. he did a superlative job giving tribute to a long, long time friend that he (obviously) loved and admired. I admire Dave for "getting back in the seat" and doing what was the best and right thing to do.
btw, at the very end of the segment: he almost lost it. *the pain of losing a dear friend tragically can be almost unbearable. I know what Dave was thinking and WANTING to say: "Robin, FOR GOD'S SAKE! why didn't you let me know??? pick up a phone! tell me! I would have done anything for you. the shirt off my back. My older brother suffered from severe depression, and despite all of the help and support that he received, he still committed suicide. It's a pain that my family will always carry.
Yes. and the last few minutes of this tribute, plus the music they choose in the background almost caused Dave to tear-up, but he held it back (as almost surely he felt he had to). There's a loss in these situations that you never really quite get over. But you simply MUST choose not to dwell on it, ... and live your life as best you can after the initial shock & grieving process has passed. *as long as there are dvds, TV, and the internet: Robin Williams will NEVER be forgotten. ... why, I even remembered him here and earlier today on findagrave, com ! ... my final little word: ENJOY LIFE, ... and do as much as you can for others.*
One of the really tough parts in this entire story is the fact that Lewy Body Dementia is only diagnosable post-mortem. Until some very bright people who have adequate funding and can develop the necessary diagnostic tools come along to turn that around, there are going to be more untimely deaths of otherwise healthy people.
It really pains me to hear people say things like what Dave said at the very end. The hard truth is that no one could have known what Robin was going through. Other than trying to address and treat the symptoms (extreme depression, memory loss etc…), there is just no way to “cure” the disease at this time.
Some day, that will no longer be the case.
Every time I see anything like this about Robin Williams I find myself teary eyed. What an incredible talent and an even more incredible person..
I always thought Robin's best interviews were with Dave. They had great chemistry, even though Dave mostly acted as a wall from which Robin could bounce any and all things that popped into his mind. For the past years, I often checked here on YT to see if I could find a new clip of them together. It's sad that I'll never have that pleasure again. But such is life. Robin will be missed.

I am shocked and disturbed reading some of these comments by people directing there hatred towards the talented actor/comedian Robin Williams. What planet is this? Obviously the man was in pain and felt this was the only answer. So sad. But then I realize that there is always a very small percentage of the population that are complete idiots and care about no one but themselves. So all is well. Robin, you were one in a million, rest in peace.

The problem is that we focus on the negative and heartless comments. Simply down-vote the negative ones or report it as a hate speech which sadly a lot of the comments have been very hateful. The man died almost 2 weeks ago and people continue to be cruel about the circumstances. I especially don't understand the people who take it to another level and attack his family. Not enough people care anymore...about anything.

What a wonderful, informal Eulogy, Dave. Here we are in February of 2015, and I STILL miss Robin. If only I could have given him a 10th of what he'd given to me in making me laugh, smile and cry....

Tributes like these help me to feel better in the wake of his passing. It's important to remember all the good Robin's done for the world, and that we had him at all. RIP Robin.
RW was a true comedic genius. Still can't believe he is gone. And now almost 10 years later. And I still watch the TH-cam videos for his performances. And thank goodness for that.
I will always appreciate Dave for acknowledging Robin’s struggles. It was hidden from the world so no one would be conflicted over their laughter and enjoyment of the skits.

Touching! I will always love and miss Robin. When Dave is no longer sitting in his chair, another empty spot in my heart. They have both given us all so many laughs and touching moments. In my youth, and now in my mature age, people that have always made me feel, that no matter whatever was happening in my life or the world, these people will always there to make you forget the problems of my life or problems of the world. Thank you to Williams, Lettermam, Rivers, Carson, Rickles, and Miss.Joan Rivers that made me for the hour forget. God bless the ones that passed and thank you to the ones that carry on

No one wants to suffer the agony of disease, especially a disease like depression that so few of us understand because often the depressed person "looks ok" so how bad can a disease be if one looks ok? You can love your family and friends deeply but depression isn't controlled or treated by love!!! Sometimes the disease wins, just like sometimes even if you listen to everything your Doctor says, you still die from heart disease. No one judges "physical" diseases like they judge diseases of the mind. Shame on those who think they can judge the pain of another person. I am so grateful to have experienced like so many others the genius talent of this extraordinary man. My deepest condolences to his family and personal friends. My heart is broken for the pain Robin Williams endured. I was away visiting family when it was announced that Robin Williams had died probably from suicide. I always bring a few DVD's when I travel anywhere and one of the movies I had with me was Good Will Hunting. I love that movie and especially Robin Williams in his Oscar winning role. When he talks about his wife who had died of cancer, the love he felt, the intimacy of his love for his wife, he impresses Will who though a genius, was very ignorant when it came to relationships between a man and a woman. Those comments by the character played by Robin Williams, whether the dialogue was expressed as written or ad-libbed by Robin, because either way, I could feel every word said because it was as exactly what I felt for the man I had loved and I will always watch that performance with awe. Imagine wanting something so badly and no matter how close you get, you never quite obtain it. That's the disease of depression, sometimes unbearably severe and sometimes you can feel wonderful and then without warning fall into the depth of despair. Mr. Robin Williams, thank you for sharing you extraordinary talent with us.
Robin was truly a man who broke the mold. So much talent burning so bright. Such a shame that his inner demons won the battle he was fighting. R.I.P.

Now when I see Robin Williams, I laugh and I Cry. He was always there for us. To make us laugh. And when he died, he died alone. Thank you for entertaining me all of my life.
