Just watched 5 or 6 of your videos. Very cool seeing your progress. And love your attitude for all the comments you get from TH-cam "experts" on how you should build everything 😅 You've got a new subscriber, thanks for sharing your journey with us!
I am curious how your walls have held up after backfilling. I know a couple people thought you would have trouble from the pressure, I would disagree if the support is as decent as it looks. I am in the middle of building a 12'x12' root cellar Into a side hill presently, building it beefy enough to drive our skidsteer right on top of the roof as we bury it. I am using two 6" vents, has two vents been adequate for your cellar? Also are you staying with an earth floor or going with something else?
Hey Briar, the plywood pushed in a little bit when I initially back filled but the whole structure is holding well. I did reinforce the inside with horizontal posts to prevent any further movement. The humidity in my cellar is 70% which I believe is typical for a root cellar but I'd like a lower humidity. One viewer recommended I cut the PVC of the vent pipe higher up inside the cellar so that the old air is completely removed. I haven't done that but I plan to soon. The floor is earth. We'll see how it holds up over time, I'm pretty happy with it so far. Thanks for the comments.
Looking very nice ! A bit to much straight up and down for me but very doable . I believe once it’s covered it will cool down greatly ! So after this are you building a cistern ? I think you just like to play in the dirt ! Lol. Do you know where your water table stands at ? If so you could punch a hole into it for Lake Of Dreams ( If you build it they will spawn ) lol , and feed it ! ( kinda like field of dreams movie )
Thanks Dave! I plan on having a solar powered well at some point and I'll have a larger cistern with it. That may be a while though. The water table is just over 200 feet deep in this area so no digging for water LOL!
I know you probably do not like my comments, but I see a dangerous situation with this build. There is no way that plywood is going to hold back the weight of all the dirt you are planning to backfill against it. Please install more support in between your posts on the walls.
Well if it doesn't work out, I may do that later. I'm pretty sure concrete is not in my budget right now. What do you think it would cost to have a concrete root cellar 16'x8'x8'?

Yes, adding additional support is the plan.
There is a reason we build basement walls with concrete and not plywood
