- Helicopters in games crash as often as Windows Vista trying to sync iTunes because if you could just chopper your way out of trouble without crashing, most videogames would be eight minutes long. Consider Left 4 Dead’s first campaign No Mercy, in which you slog your way to the rooftop of a zombified hospital, hail the News Chopper 5 rescue copter, fend off the undead until it arrives, then do an action-hero leap to board it.
What happens next, completely off-screen, is the pilot turns into a zombie, Zoey shoots him, and because none of the four survivors can fly a helicopter, they made an emergency landing that is 90 emergency and 10 percent landing.
Extra kudos to the unnamed helicopter pilot from 2013’s Tomb Raider, for managing to hold a helicopter steady enough for Lara Croft to jump into it from an exploding building during a supernaturally violent storm.
Sympathies, at the same time, for his family, on account of how that pilot gets killed when Lara forces him to attempt a doomed landing on the island of Yamatai to rescue her buddies.
The Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series, meanwhile, hates helicopters so much we suspect helicopters murdered its parents. How else to explain the non-stop copter crash fest that is the Modern Warfare oeuvre?

My PC, knowing the true rules of helicopter rescue in games, crashed 4 times in a row during that cut scene.

I'll pop in two. Fallout 4, when you do some quests for the brotherhood. And Metal Gear Solid 5, when you constantly get picked up for evac, normally without issues.

Most dangerous means of transport according to games:
5. Elevators (the cables get cut and you either plummet several stories to your contractually obligated black out or you get ambushed. Either way bad times for you.)
4. Trains (You will have a shootout. No exceptions, there is going to be a gun battle which will result in the train being split in half and 60% of the time your half will go flying off the rails)
3. Jetpacks (Name ANYONE in a video game that has EVER survived having a jetpack that isn't the main character. That list could fit on a post it note)
2. Helicopters (They will always crash, but you will always survive with minimal injuries. Everyone else? Less lucky.)
1. Anything piloted by your online teammates at all. (They WILL drive you off a cliff or into a river and you WILL die. Because lol im s0 rand0m trololololo!)

The Lara Croft one really bugged me. How about, instead of risking the lives of everyone (and actually ending up killing an innocent person with your craziness) you listen to your pilot and just contact the military Lara! You don't have to be the one to personally kill all the bad guys and save your friends you know! There are people trained exactly for this type of situation!

In that situation landing is the bad thing but flying through it is okay? They were screwed either way.
Or how about this: Those storms were fueled by an angry spirit trapped in a corpse who won't let anyone leave the island until she finds the perfect body to inhabit. Lara forced the pilot back because she knew they would just get zapped out of the air otherwise

Yujen Boston I felt the constant "all rescue crashes" to have gotten overdone. Like Jesus have mercy. AC-130, then a Blackhawk, BUT the WWII era PT Boat worked JUST FINE despite being there for decades.
The Blackhawk should have arrived after Himeko was dead and a final storm ravages the island. Two aircraft crashes in one game and everyone just starts dying...if was just getting ridiculous.

Honestly. I feel like most times it's the other way around. A bad guy is about to shoot you - but then suddenly plot armour kicks in (because apparently trained soldiers don't know when to reload) and the gun is empty or decides to suddenly jam.

2013's Tomb Raider seemed to have something against pilots in general. In addition to the helicopter pilot who tries to rescue you, there was also the two who survived the airplane crash early on, setting up two rescue missions that both prove completely pointless because they get killed as soon as you reach them. If I remember correctly there was also another pilot's body from which Lara gets the lighter she uses to craft flame arrows.
The best video game helicopter pilot is Jock (Deus Ex) thank you very much, he takes you on many flights with safe landings (although the game can still blow the chopper out the sky if you're not paranoid enough so yeah, I guess games do hate helicopters).

No Niko from modern warfare 2 and 3 is by far the best. He is in almost every mission that doesn't use stealth and I think he only crashes once or twice

Don't forget that time i was rescuing people in battlefield but soon after taking off i realized i had no idea how to fly a helicopter and wondered who let me in the pilots seat for the remaining ten seconds of my life before slamming into a building.

To Ed's credit, if you don't complete the campaign and are at the helipad on time, Ed does manage to successfully land the helicopter and lift not just Frank, but Frank, Otis, Jessie, and everyone else Frank managed to save out of danger, which, even if it's just the two old fat people who were already on the roof when you started, is still one pilot and five passengers on a helicopter built for three at most.
very few will remember this one but a mission in Conflict Desert Storm on the PS2 had a helicopter being shot down at the enemy of the level and the next level, tasked you with holding off waves of soldiers, tanks, and choppers. great game

In Serious Sam 3, this happens several times, and if memory serves, one time the helicopter that's supposed to be rescuing you turns into an enemy when one of Mental's creatures takes it over.

Modern Warfare, why is it that in one scene you have a helicopter fall straight out of the sky when it gets hit by an EMP, but when you hit them with a missile, they spin out of control and crash?
Because it sounds like they know what "Autorotation" means but choose only to use it when it directly involves the protagonist.
I think you mean 'autorotation' which is disengaging the main rotor from the engine in the event of a tail-rotor failiure to reduce spin, since an autogyro is a rotary wing aircraft with an unpowered rotor to provide lift and a rear propeller for thrust, example being 'Little Nellie' from 'You Only Live Twice.'
I thought "Gyrocopters" were those little things. Whereas autogyro is short for "autogyration" which is the same as autorotation...

Autogyro is another name for a gyrocopter... along with gyroplane and rotoplane. Most of these are actually trade names of different manufacturers since all are, technically, helicopters (defined as an aircraft that derives lift and thrust from rotors) but as they were never as popular as their powered brethren, no single term came to dominate, unlike how Hoover or Google came to mean 'use a vacuum cleaner' or 'obtain information' respectively.

Don't forget about survival mode in the Division, where after you crash your first helicopter, you somehow find the trust to get into an extraction helicopter.
Also in Left 4 dead 2. in the very early versions of Cold Stream, where you thought you had been rescued, only to watch the copter fall out of the sky as it headed towards you. Much panicked run and shoot from then on. The scene was taken out in later updates. I have to admit, I found it very atmospheric and was disappointed when the plot was changed.

I'll say so, MGS Stealth Girl, and Lone Wolf. Vista was a beautiful OS, sure, but if I could of gotten frequent crasher miles from it I'd probably gotten 1+ million such miles... in the first week of frequent usage.

I want to give a shoutout to the pilot from Resistance 3 who not only manages to stay very much alive during the first time the vehicle comes under attack by alien robots, but also manages to get the main character out of an open area with missiles raining down, deliver him to a heavily defended floating fortress, and get him out while the whole thing is exploding without ever crashing or exploding once. Cheers to you, the best pilot in video game history
I think Halo Reach should've been on the list. Granted, there are many instances of player controlled helicopters making their runs just fine. However, during one of the early missions, the helicopter you are in passes through an emp field and drops out of the sky like a heavily armored sack of potatoes.

That helicopter part in tomb raider crashed my game, and corrupted my saved data..... I was playing on a ps4..... it all happen at the moment she jumps to the helicopter.... boom crashed game..

The left 4 dead helicopter crash happened because the survivors infected the pilot, not because he was bitten.
If you're immune, you still carry the virus, and can infect non immune by just being near survivors.

Hey, the pilot in Left 4 dead wasn't bit by a zombie. He was infected because the main characters were carries. They are immune to the zombie virus themselves, but they can still carry it around with them and infect others. You figure this out by reading the writings on the walls inside of certain safe rooms and stuff.
You know, I just realized something. How in the world did that zombie get into the pilot's helicopter?
The pilot doesn't land when he drops off Frank, and as there's a town of infected and that he's still alive in three days to pick you up you'd assume the pilot parked his helicopter somewhere far away from Willamette.
Maybe... he picked someone else up on the way to Frank, and that guy turned.
What about Uncharted 1? That death of the helicopter pilot near the end is the luckiest McGuffin ever!

I only got it once in Crash Course, but one game I had Francis kept insulting Zoey about shooting the pilot and during the mandatory horde event Francis said, "Zoey, pretend they're all helicopter pilots!" and Zoey yelled, "HE WAS A ZOMBIE!!!!!!!"

What about the first mission in battlefield 4? It's bad enough you almost get murdered by an enemy helicopter, but getting within 3 feet of your own helicopter just to have it nearly turn you to mincemeat, after getting shot down by the previously mentioned enemy helicopter, seems like an extra slap in the face. I mean, come on. I call for an emergency evacuation and you bring a helicopter with no weapons whatsoever? Sounds like a recipe for disaster. Well done. Proud of you guys.
