    I’m a lighting and automation designer in Australia. So many interior designers and architects forget about the importance of lighting and how it can change your whole home. This was a great video and thanks for highlighting what I think is one of the most important parts of what makes a house a home xx

    What I love about you is your encouragement to not necessarily spend tons on money on brand name decor, but to incorporate things we love, we are passionate about, and are sentimental about or that tell our story. You are so empowering! I feel like if I follow those thoughts I can't go wrong! (unless I hang my curtains/drapery panels too low or match my headboard, nightstands, dresser, & armoir.) :) :) :)

    Omg! Lighting is so important to every room. It makes look there best or worst. I love the Philips hue light bulbs. Working with people who don't want to install dimmers, I always suggest the Philips hue lights. They have amazing features so you don't walk into a dark home because they turn on when you approach your door or before sometimes. Perfect for movie watching, you can have them on a motion sensor so they are low and brighten when you enter a room. great for older people who need a little light. This video has me thinking about all the ways light affects you.

    Thank YOU Julie for teaching us combining Feng Shui in this modern era. It's time to replace the dining room wall canvas picture, this wall is also facing the window across living room. I've learned from your other episodes that it's a great idea to place a mirror on this wall that attract the natural scenery from that window. But I wonder can I put a crystal chandelier with gold trim that may reflect from the mirror? I'm supposed to use the mirror to absorb the best scenery from that window, but having a crystal chandelier above dining table, would it reflect away what I intended to absorb?

    Best thing about being stuck at home, I started doing projects around my condo, so, I discovered Julie Knuu!, By far my favorite designer to follow. I love your style! So when you mention your friends, I feel that we could be friends. 😂☺️ I have a medium size chandelier in my kitchen, that requires six bulbs; I need light but I also want it soft. I also have undercabinet lighting which helps with the amount of light. Do you have any suggestions on which lightbulbs to use?

    Awesome channel. Love the videos and all the information. I’m trying to figure out a new ceiling light for my office/library in my new home. The room is 10x11 feet, and the ceilings are about 10 feet. One wall is going to be floor-to-ceiling book shelves (deciding on a two tone warm and dark wood finish with library ladder). I love that brass/copper color finish for fixtures. Wasn’t sure if I could/should hang the lighting a bit or if it should be a flush so as not to block the book shelves at the top? Any suggestions or recommendations would be much appreciated.

      Flush or semi-flush. Your ceilings are taller than average, but you don’t want to visually block the smaller sized space.

    Thank you for your advice! You made me feel so much better about a recent purchase for my foyer lighting. I splurged, but I know that i will love it! It hasn't arrived yet, so I am having a bit of anxiety regarding if I chose the right size or not. I think that it will be okay though. My ceiling is 23ft from floor, rounded reverse staircase with 2nd story window. Staircase walls roughly 18ft diameter, but it opens to a platform at the top, so it's not all completely walled-in.. The lighting fixture is a 42" diameter sphere made of crystals (handmade Etsy). It's so pretty and sparkly! i really wanted a light and airy feel for my statement piece and overall vibe for the house. I am guessing that I should center it to the upstairs window, right? Thank you!

    My situation is I have 21 ft living room where 60 inch round nickel crystal orb chandelier. Next to the living room I have a spiral staircase with black iron rails where I was thinking of a black finish. This would be on the second floor.

    Hi Julie! Just found your channel and I am completely inspired! Your videos are so well organized and full of great takeaways.
    I am looking for a sizable lighting option for my 2 story/20 foot ceiling foyer over the staircase. I was really ga-ga over the one in this video at 4:23 (crystal inside a globe) and was wondering where it’s from and what size it is. Also, are there any rules on how long it should be as well since you only mentioned diameter?
    Any minimum distance necessary between one chandelier and another (ie. one over kitchen dining table and one over kitchen island in same room)
    and does your island have to be a minimum size to allow for a chandelier or pendant(s)?
    Thank you so much! Looking forward to watching more of you 😊

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Tara, I custom made that massive chandelier overseas. It’s 72” in diameter for 21’ ceiling height. It’s an open space so it could handle that size. No rules on island/ dining table lighting, I think as long as they coordinate- whether style or finish, you’re all good. And lastly no minimum size of island for pendant, just scale it proportionately and you should be fine 👍🏻 Thank you for watching!

    Hi Julie, I just found your channel and already love it! Thanks for sharing all this great information! I would like to know what type of light fixture you would suggest for my formal dining room that has a vaulted ceiling with 3 skylights in it, on one side of the room the ceiling is 8 ft, on the other side it is 13 ft tall. If I want to hang a fixture in the center of the room - above the table, it would hang from a vaulted ceiling, since the ceiling reaches the tallest point off center - I’m hoping I am explaining myself correctly... does it make sense for a chandelier to hang off of a vaulted ceiling (where it is still tilted)? I would love to hear your opinion, thanks!

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, center the fixture above the table to define the space below it. Doesn’t matter if it’s hanging from a vaulted portion or the highest beam. The dining room below will dictate where that fixture goes.

      I’ve been getting this comment a lot Roxii! I had no idea it would be such a hot topic. I like warm lighting since my style is more eclectic/ new traditional. I love warm candlelight, I design with warm woods and lots of gold/brass elements so soft white LED (with warm undertones) work well for my space. For more modern aesthetics that lean towards cool colors (blues/ grays/ silvers) I like daylight. It’s crisp and clean and works well with the modern aesthetic. Just commit to one, don’t mix, and it will turn out beautifully!

    Hi Julie! I’ve been watching a lot of tour videos lately and I want to thank you for giving us so many great tips. I just have a question on the dining light above the dining table. I think I watched another video of yours that said that the light should fill up the area above your dining table. So if we had a long rectangular table, I believe you had mentioned we can use 2 - 3 pendant lights above it. In this video, you only mention to use the 2 - 3 pendant lights above a kitchen island. Can you please help to clarify whether we should have two or three lights above a long dining table as well?

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Please tell me if an 8' kitchen ceiling should have pendants? I will have a moveable cart island in the middle, either 12" or 18" wide. Since my kitchen is only 11" 7" wide I could not have a bigger island.

    • @JulieKhuu
      @JulieKhuu  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Patti, thank you for watching! It’s not necessary with ceilings that low. If the cart was stationary, you may install pendants, but seeing as how you will be moving them at your will- people will bump into the fixtures. Try semi-flush mounts. They give the illusion of pendants, but still hung up pretty close to the ceiling. Hope that helps!

    This is soooo helpful!! Thank you for taking the time to help with lighting. I am so excited to have fun with picking some things out!
    I have a queation for you in regard to ceilings. We just purchased a home built in 1942, American Colonial. This home is on the traditional scale and although we do enjoy this style, I dont want it to look like my grandmothers home as she was an interior designer and her home was traditionalbut oh so gorgeous!
    For me, I'd love a more modernized style of traditional.
    My question: would you be willing to do a video on ceiling tiles or did you already talk about it and I've just missed it? I would love to have them in my home but am unsure if this would be a good choice as we do not have vaulted ceilings...i believe they're about 9 or 10? I dont want the room to look short but love the "wow" effect of these. Thank you for your time!

      Paint or source ceiling tiles in a color similar to your walls and help the room appear larger as a result Kimberly. If there’s too much contrast, the ceiling will look lower than its actual height. Hope that helps, thank you for watching 🙏🏻☺️
