    Rosemary requires good drainage. Pure compost or potting soil will most likely suffocate the roots with moisture, and eventually lead to root rot and a dead plant, especially for younger plants.
    For rosemary, you want a lot of perlite or horticultural sand/pebbles. A simple ratio is 1/3rd perlite and 2/3rd soil or compost.

    THANK YOU!! I’m hoping this year I don’t kill the Rosemary. I’ve gotten much more experience w plants this year, I now know that I missed this very important step or loosening the roots before. That’s why they never made it. Okay, about to tackle them roots. Wish me luck!! Thanks for the guide. 💚

    My blue tuscan rosemary has been thriving but it's time for a repot because it's getting pretty root bound. I'm about to do the same, wish me luck!

    Great tips for saving Rosemary topiaries! One technique I use with extremely root bound plants like this, get a serrated steak knife from a thrift store and make fairly deep vertical slits down the length of the root ball. This makes it much easier to reach in and pull out the bound roots prior to re-potting

    I re-pot EVERYTHING because the soil they come in from the store will not drain. So re-pot and switch soil to something proven to drain.
    If the roots are close to the edge of the pot surface they will not absorb any water so you do need to loosen the roots and even if not is worth it to loosen them, smell them to make sure they are not rotting.

    it might of been easier to wash out the soil with a hosepipe 1st. would make seperating the roots an easier job.

    I’m so glad I watched your video. I bought a rosemary, identical to what you showed, few months ago. One side is brown. The leaves fell off already. I was trying to research on what to do. I was wondering if I was overwatering or underwatering. I live in Houston. It’s hot. I’m so afraid to under or overwater, but I think the main problem is that when I reported, I didn’t do what you showed. I just took it out of the pot, and it’s still completely root bound. Maybe that’s why it’s dying. I’ll do what you showed and hope to save it. Thanks so much.

    can I try soaking the root ball in the water, then separating out the individual plants before re-potting?

    • @carolcapper20
      @carolcapper20 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! That's even better. Four plants shouldn't be in such a small pot anyway.

    do you water it right away after repotting the plant or we still wait once the soil feels dry??

    • @yahrlenmorlet
      @yahrlenmorlet 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Repotting a plant is always considered a traumatic experience for any plant... which is why it helps if you water your rosemary 2 days before repotting. Why? It helps the roots be a bit more pliable, flexible, so that they won’t break or damage more than “necessary”. This is Especially true if you suspect the plant is root bound.
      Unless you spot root rot, then it’s best to completely remove that damaged soil along with pruning away the damaged roots... spray the roots with 50/50 water and peroxide, before replanting the plant in new medium (soil).
      Otherwise, if in fact, it’s only root bound with healthy roots, then what’s always a good thing thing to do, is to mix some of that good soil in with the new soil inside that bigger pot.
      Why?
      Because the soil it was in has probiotics that the roots felt comfortable in enough to thrive and so it will acclimate faster if you do so, because it won’t be so much of a root shock.
      And yes... Watering your plant soon after it has been planted, and let it drain completely does ensure that the soil establishes well around its roots so that the plant’s root system can grow faster and healthy into its new environment.
