  • This is a terrific video featuring professional herb gardener David Gilson of The Herb Lyceum at Gilson's in Groton, Massachusetts. Learn everything you need to know to grow healthy rosemary to cook with all year round, the types of rosemary, planting and watering tips, transporting from outdoors in the warm months to inside for the winter, etc.

I had my rosemary outside in a pot in full sun all summer, sitting on top of a tray with rocks and water in it. I did not water from the top the ENTIRE summer.
Once I brought it indoors, since I thought that was how rosemary liked to get it's moisture, ie from the water in the tray evaporating, I kept it in the tray of water
on the rocks. But now it's starting to droop at the tips... so I figured maybe I misunderstood and need to water it in the soil. I am grateful I found your video,
because now I think I understand why my first attempt to overwinter my rosemary failed (I had watered the first one at the soil, but probably overdid it without
realizing) I will try only watering it when the tips bend over like that, since the soil isn't likely to pull away from the sides. None of my potted plants have soil that does
that. Thank you for the video, very informative and exactly what I needed

Thank you for tips on watering!😁 Only thing I was told in the past is have finger in the soil 2 inches deep and if tip of the finger is dry...water. I followed this and still killed my plant.😞 This tip is MUCH more helpful! In spring I will try again and I feel more confident now keeping Rosemary going.😁

I live in Massachusetts and this is the first year I planted two rosemary plants in my raised garden beds and it did better than any of the rosemary plants I planted in pots. I want to transplant those plants in pots and acclimate them so that they can survive indoors this winter...hopefully it will be a successful trial.

I have many Tuscan Blue's planted as hedges in the ground here in Texas, they grow to about four feet in hight and width and put out nice blue flowers quite often. They've been in the ground for years surviving winters in the low teens without issue, I do have them mulched to help. My only problem is few of them did suddenly get a blight and die back almost completely, some killing the plant. I have others planted right next to marginal ones that continue to thrive without issue though, I've never had a mass die off. I try not to water them too much but Texas weather is very unpredictable, especially this past year we've had unheard of rain.

This video is really helpful. I wondered why my rosemary stopped growing in February. I watered it and no change. Then it looked worse. I see now that I did not need to water it, but leave it alone for a few more days. I did not know what to look for; drooping leaves on top and soil pulling away from the sides of the pot. Thank you so much for this explanation.

I only water mine in the dog days of summer when we go week's without rain. Otherwise I just let mother nature do her thing and it survives on rain alone. And mines in full sun.
Try moving yours someplace out of the rain where it can get lots of light.

I just bought a rosemary and I transplanted it into its new permanent home. It was going week the first few days; it looked perky and happy, but just today it looked wilted and dried out at the tips and bent over. It was over 100 degrees F today. I don’t know what to do to make it better. When transplanting it I cut some of the roots that wrapped around the plant. I think that was a big mistake. What can I do to help my plant? I wish I could attach a picture for comparison.

I suggest one should pull apart the root system to expose The root to oxygen and dirt.before planting.First step should be filling the hole with water& watching how long it takes the soil to absorb the water.thats a huge determine towards watering .,As we all have our ways of gardening, I'm giving my take.Peace & Love to ALL.

There are hardy rosemaries. They should have well draining soil, balanced Loam Topsoil is best. If there isn’t good drainage around and underneath the roots it will die. Look up Rosemary as there are many many beautiful varieties, many that are hardy and many that are Very hardy, it only needs very little compost/fertiliser once or a few times in warm summer season. rosemaries.co.uk I would highly recommend
