3 Methods for Pruning Herbs To Stimulate New Growth

When pruning herbs for harvest or for shape, it's vital to follow the 'rules' of the plant...the way it naturally grows. This way you'll stimulate new, delicious growth as well as shape the plant over the course of the season or seasons.
We'll be pruning rosemary, green onions, and of course the classic basil in this video to demonstrate a few different approaches.

Clarification: For green onions, you can cut 1-2" above the soil, but I find the technique I described to work better for maximizing green top harvest, then you can pull and use the entire green onion once you've gotten what you want from the tops.
rule of thumb when trimming trees (winter, dummies, not summer).. one third crown reduction, no more.. often quoted among the tree butchers, trimmers, and arborists.. just saying.. probably a nearly universal rule
I have six dwarf tomatoes growing indoors, in each container I have green onions growing . When we need green onions for food preparation, I trim the onions in one of the pots. This rotation is perfect.

And Italian parsley + mint! Trying to maximize container garden.

You don't prune lemongrass, you pull the whole thing out because you can only eat the base part near the roots.

I have lemon mint that is slightly different. I can actually trim that with a small hedge clipper and new grows fine. Same on oregano. In early spring, you need to trim all the dead off. I think oregano draws more bees than anything else I've planted.
Can you please do more videos on herbs for beginners? Lemongrass, sage, tarragon, thyme and oregano are the types of herbs we would also most likely want to grow because they're expensive at the supermarket.

I think one thing I wish I had done from the beginning of the pandemic was learning how to garden herbs (which I just started doing a day ago on my birthday) and learning to slow down and take my time.
I need to move, and the next place I'm hoping to move to is like a cottage or mountain type home, with a lot of area to grow herbs. And just live a quiet life. With my plants, my books, my family, and my dog.
This was so extremely helpful! I have been so lost when it comes to pruning and for some reason, I haven't been able to find any videos like this one that explain it so well. The info was straightforward but also in depth enough for me to feel comfortable doing it myself. Of course, the demonstration was also extremely helpful! Would love to see more like this about thyme, oregano, parsley, etc

This is great information. I was about to cut all of my chives to an inch tall so they would grow again, but I use my chives in almost every meal I make. I'm used to going out and clipping what I need. I was resulting to the fact that I would have to wait 14 day's for the new growth to be mature enough to where I could put the chives back into use again. Your technique is much more to my liking and how I use my chives almost everyday. Thanks for that.
Thanks so much for this video - I've just been playing with growing from seeds in a hydroponics system, and moving them into a little greenhouse thing. I know I have a long way to go, but I've been encouraged by my Basil growth, and I'm excited that Rosemary is peeking up eventually. I'm learning now that maybe Rosemary isn't good in a hydroponics system, due to very wet roots? Either way, this is exciting, and I appreciated the video!

I lived in Western Washington for 6 yrs and my Chives would go wild. When they started to flower I would cut them back to the base and they continued to grow even better. I started them from seed for the first time. Starting new ones here in Northern CA. Hopefully they do as well.

I have been watching several of your videos as I prepare for my gardening season (in the Northeast). Can you share your tips on how to prune thyme, Parsley and Cilantro. My Parsley and Cilantro always seem to bold on me!

Oh yes please... help with growing sage. I have no trouble with thyme oregano raspberries figs kale tomatoes a variety of peppers- I replant basil each year but ... sage and cilantro are my epic failures that don’t even last a single season or single harvest, my blueberries are suffering producing little fruit and my strawberries, well all gone but one producing one berry then green leaf season with nothing more 2 years in a row.

Sooooo need help with my cilantro. I got a Lettuce Grow Farm Stand and it's out of control.
Cilantro is a cool season crop. 💁 Give it shade once it heats up. Cut it down low and it will send more growth up.
Cilantro pruning would be nice to learn..
