Great review man, I was looking for something like this as there are not many out there right now reviewing this laptop. Unfortunately, mine doesn't come in for a while but I ordered a config much like yours - 3070, mechanical keyboard, etc. I too am disappointed with the 125W 3070 but I think that with the cooling solution they have they just couldn't squeeze any more power out of it. I am definitely going to look into seeing if we can't undervolt the CPU as that seems to be what is the most toasty. The one I ordered does have the 2k 240hz panel though which I am super pumped to see.
I wish they made a 3080 version. I am eyeing for an update in about a year, I know these laptops will not be mainstream before that anyway. How could u do this Alienware 👽😫😭
Word of advice for those with heating issues, you can offset the cpu temp in the bios which reduces the performance by a bit but you dont thermal throttling. Cooling pad also reduced my temperature by 6 C and improved power intake basically more performance. Also dont forget to turn off optimum for performance boost.
5:39 Your 3070 reads 4608 cores instead of 5120 cores that 3070's are supposed to have. It's been reported from other users and sites too the Dell is shipping M15 ryzen laptops with lower core count 3070's. Anyway thought I'd mention it in case you were not aware of it. Keep up the good work! :)

Nice grats man! I love this laptop. There ended up being a few small quirks (like having proprietary parts to add another SSD), but the performance outweighs it.
just got one myself, should arrive by June 7 (my bday), will be using mostly for 3d modeling on clo for apparel design + some minor gaming (pro evolution soccer 2021), I was undecided between this one for 2,500 CAD (including tax + warranty) or the x15 for 3,300 CAD (with warranty and tax)... performance wise they seemed the same, only difference being the weight/thickness/materials, so definitely didn't think it was worth the extra 800 bucks and went with the m15! thanks for the review!

Thanks Matthieu. Yes correct, it is a magnesium alloy in the R5 and should also be on the R6 as I think they have identical externals. I also think it might feel a little like plastic from the clear coats put on it to prevent scratches, but was able to confirm the casing material with Dell.
I ordered the same setup but with the QHD panel. Only took three weeks to get it. They did estimate in July as the ship date. So you could gotten the QHD model in a reasonable amount of time. 😉
@@sachinmanivannan3506 it likely won't. I believe this USB C is only 100w while the power supply is 240w. New USB C 2.1 is coming soon that would be capable of powering this, but sadly not yet.

Hi G David, I appreciate it, thanks! I haven't had a chance to play with a Zephyrus G15, but I believe it's the 5900hs CPU vs 5900hx (very small difference in power). But both should be good for what you're looking for. I have been doing some display port out through USBC tests and LOVE IT on this laptop. Thermals drop about 6 degrees and I see a pretty significant FPS bump (with the laptop display turned off). I'd honestly say go with the brand you're more comfortable with. I've had a few ASUS laptops over the years, and this is now my 2nd Alienware. The 3070 comes nerfed by default but there's a simple bios update to fix it.

I too was wondering the differences between the r5 and r6 but didn't look much into it as the ryzen is only available in the r5. If you're interested in a non ryzen or just looking for a comparison look up the channel mash it, they do a bunch of alienware reviews and comparisons. If you do order one though sign up for their newsletter first so you can get a 10% coupon, it aved me abunch. They also have some smaller coupons under their deal page, forget if you can combine them.

Reminds me of the Dell G15 Ryzen edition. Funny thing is the Dell is marketed as a Dell G series but the internals show an Alienware 👽 on the motherboard 😂. It's an Alienware in disguise. The 3060 variant is well with the money.

personal experience, very easy to use the alienware software to control fan speed/lighting. fan speed balanced is totally silent but it gets hot even normal usage. i use fan speed performance for all normal usage, quiet enough and cool enough. i use fan speed full speed for heavy graphics gaming then its noisy but keeps it cooler. also, the alienware fan sound is less annoying than some other brands fan sound, somehow..
Peter captured it pretty well. It is mostly totally silent. But will sound like an afterburner when all fans run at max to cool it down. I haven't noticed any extra heat on the key board or palm rest. Up near the screen, just above the F keys, does get very hot

I haven't tried one personally, I'd like to. But the G15 is a great laptop. If the price is comparable I'd give the Alienware the edge due to its 3070 having a TGP of 125 vs the G15 at 100. The 5900hx also out performs the 5900hs. But the HS is also still a powerful processor
Glad you asked this. I ended up making this laptop a daily use thing. For both work (editing, meetings, file management, etc) and also gaming. The thing is almost never turned off and runs like a champ. One complaint I'd have is when I do put it to sleep (not off), it somehow always kicks back on in the middle of the night and starts flashing rainbow lights all over
Also haven't had any heating issues. It is very warm when you have it unplugged and directly on your lap. But the battery doesn't last that long this way anyway. Fans aren't bad.
I ordered the QHD and it arrived last week. Having trouble with it keep going back to the integrated graphics instead of using the 3070. Are you having this issue?? Sorry this gaming laptop is not compact, at least compared to other gaming laptops with similar specs. It's huge!!
Weird, I haven't had that happen. What happens when you toggle Optimus on/off? I did have an issue early on where being set on the 3070 would continually auto zoom my screen to 150%. Drove me insane
Please can you recheck the SSD Mount. And also in which country are you stated. Because that SSD Mount looks different than what Mash IT discussed about. Probably DELL is using different kind of Mounting mechanism in different parts of the world. Please if possible can you try removing and reinstalling the SSD.
I'll take a look. Do you know what size SSD Mash had? it could be different from that. i'm in the US. The mount is very similar to the ones used in the R4 from this year as well.
Is same bracket you just need to move to the next position from 2230 to 2280... Second bracket isn't included so you need to order one from Amazon or fight like 2 days with dell customer service

So far I really like this laptop. There's a guide for adding better thermal paste to the CPU that I'm going to attempt. As my only real remaining complaint is the heat. The bios update to unlock the GPU is also a must do.

I think Alienware adjusts the customization options over time. I'd say go into chat or call in and see if they can still push one through. Though they never offered an R5 with a 3080, they should hopefully still be able to get you a 3070
I ordered one with QHD and 5800H yesterday . Is there a clamp to secure a full 2280 in the second SSD slot? I suppose the metal cover is missing on that one too. I want to put 4TB Nvme in the second slot. Other reviews were complaining about it too.

@@NoRegret08 is detailed in the PDF specs Sheet on page 13. The PC accept only up to 512 on 2230 ssd or up to 2TB on 2280 ssd .. so you can replace main 2230 with a 2280 of 2tb and use a second one of 2tb as slave disc
The Cherry Mech keyboard has NO backlighting for secondary functions under number keys and Function keys - this is a terrible implementation of backlighting! Even in light reduction in ambient light is making the secondary function totally invisible - HORRIBLE! I hope someone can tell me if there are replacement key caps with transparent secondary function symbols. Hope there is a solution
Yeah there's a flaw with the function keys for sure. They also don't seem to be mechanical. There's no "click" to them, and more of a squish when pressed.
You can! And there are some great tutorials out there, but it's kind of a pain to get to everything since the CPU is on the opposite side of the MB when you open the bottom. I still plan on doing it eventually though. They show a significant temp drop.
Was perfect then they lowered the tdp. Now the 3070 is sub 10k in timespy graphics. I’m looking elsewhere because for my ocd and pleasure in having a new laptop to finally hit that 10k score is a big deal for me. Other brands are nearly hitting 11k even just a 5watts higher. Dell are so petty putting this to 125w in the r5 just to keep 140w in the r6 models pairing with intel. This is done deliberately by intel so you buy their CPU’s because your getting a non gimped gpu
@@mariozamora9684 oh yeah. It can hit 10 overclocking. But the r4 model hits 10k but because they lowered the wattage of the gpu from 140 to 125 I believe. It’s now just shy of 10k without overclocking. Before it could do it stock. The r6 wattage is still 140w though so dell has done over amd models, that’s why they’re much cheaper.
Hey guys, making an updated video soon, but with the recent BIOS update, the cuda cores were set back to normal (previously soft locked 10% - no idea why). Timespy now fires stock over 10K. More to come.
man work on audio in your video! it is so ... can't finish to watch was patient until 5:32. firstable music is so loud at the beginning, after intro when you start talk I can't hear you properly cuz I had to reduce volume and still all the time while you talk music on the background is still sometime even louder then your voice. and some time you intonate so loud after talking quiet. very unsteady and unbalanced sounds.

I wouldn’t buy a dell/Alienware . Their cooling system sucks. Constantly hits 100 degrees. Just the other day in Best Buy I was looking at an r5. At idle the laptop was hitting 80s and 90s. It shouldn’t be doing that if the computer is just sitting there.lol
Yeah it was low for sure. Turns out when AW first launched this they soft-nerfed the cuda core total in the 3070. And later had to release a patch to give it back the missing 10-15% performance

I haven't tried one personally, I'd like to. But the G15 is a great laptop. If the price is comparable I'd give the Alienware the edge due to its 3070 having a TGP of 125 vs the G15 at 100. The 5900hx also out performs the 5900hs. But the HS is also still a powerful processor

Glad you asked this. I ended up making this laptop a daily use thing. For both work (editing, meetings, file management, etc) and also gaming. The thing is almost never turned off and runs like a champ. One complaint I'd have is when I do put it to sleep (not off), it somehow always kicks back on in the middle of the night and starts flashing rainbow lights all over
Also haven't had any heating issues. It is very warm when you have it unplugged and directly on your lap. But the battery doesn't last that long this way anyway. Fans aren't bad.

I ordered the QHD and it arrived last week. Having trouble with it keep going back to the integrated graphics instead of using the 3070. Are you having this issue?? Sorry this gaming laptop is not compact, at least compared to other gaming laptops with similar specs. It's huge!!
Weird, I haven't had that happen. What happens when you toggle Optimus on/off? I did have an issue early on where being set on the 3070 would continually auto zoom my screen to 150%. Drove me insane
@@adamninja Optimus is off. Another weird thing is it shows I have 2 monitors sometimes. Mine is set to 150% by default because I have the QHD screen.

Please can you recheck the SSD Mount. And also in which country are you stated. Because that SSD Mount looks different than what Mash IT discussed about. Probably DELL is using different kind of Mounting mechanism in different parts of the world. Please if possible can you try removing and reinstalling the SSD.
I'll take a look. Do you know what size SSD Mash had? it could be different from that. i'm in the US. The mount is very similar to the ones used in the R4 from this year as well.

@@adamninja thanks for the reply I just came back from best. Buy apparently there usb was fitting I guess my USB’s were abit wider or thicker but it better to be safe than sorry now I’m relieved 😌 and my ocd made me think I damaged the laptop so I ordered another one it’s coming tomorrow :)

I ordered the same configuration but at 2k the temperatures in the cpu and gpu how stable do you recommend the purchase?
So far I really like this laptop. There's a guide for adding better thermal paste to the CPU that I'm going to attempt. As my only real remaining complaint is the heat. The bios update to unlock the GPU is also a must do.

did you swap out the smaller ssd or is that what the default ssd is?
This was the regular 1TB ssd that came in mine. I think the 2030 ssd is on the 500gb size. I did just order a bracket to install a 2nd ssd too

I think Alienware adjusts the customization options over time. I'd say go into chat or call in and see if they can still push one through. Though they never offered an R5 with a 3080, they should hopefully still be able to get you a 3070

I ordered one with QHD and 5800H yesterday . Is there a clamp to secure a full 2280 in the second SSD slot? I suppose the metal cover is missing on that one too. I want to put 4TB Nvme in the second slot. Other reviews were complaining about it too.
You need an extra bracket from Amazon cost 10usd and I think each slot can deal up to 2tb
Yeah it's wide open but cases to hold it are available. The R4 had the same setup. Wish they'd just ship it with an empty one inside

@@NoRegret08 is detailed in the PDF specs Sheet on page 13. The PC accept only up to 512 on 2230 ssd or up to 2TB on 2280 ssd .. so you can replace main 2230 with a 2280 of 2tb and use a second one of 2tb as slave disc
The Cherry Mech keyboard has NO backlighting for secondary functions under number keys and Function keys - this is a terrible implementation of backlighting! Even in light reduction in ambient light is making the secondary function totally invisible - HORRIBLE! I hope someone can tell me if there are replacement key caps with transparent secondary function symbols. Hope there is a solution
Yeah there's a flaw with the function keys for sure. They also don't seem to be mechanical. There's no "click" to them, and more of a squish when pressed.

You can! And there are some great tutorials out there, but it's kind of a pain to get to everything since the CPU is on the opposite side of the MB when you open the bottom. I still plan on doing it eventually though. They show a significant temp drop.
Was perfect then they lowered the tdp. Now the 3070 is sub 10k in timespy graphics.
I’m looking elsewhere because for my ocd and pleasure in having a new laptop to finally hit that 10k score is a big deal for me.
Other brands are nearly hitting 11k even just a 5watts higher.
Dell are so petty putting this to 125w in the r5 just to keep 140w in the r6 models pairing with intel.
This is done deliberately by intel so you buy their CPU’s because your getting a non gimped gpu
This laptop gets a better score than Legion 5 Pro. If you want take a look at MashIT video for overclocking the GPU - He hits the 10k mark.
@@mariozamora9684 oh yeah. It can hit 10 overclocking. But the r4 model hits 10k but because they lowered the wattage of the gpu from 140 to 125 I believe. It’s now just shy of 10k without overclocking. Before it could do it stock.
The r6 wattage is still 140w though so dell has done over amd models, that’s why they’re much cheaper.
Hey guys, making an updated video soon, but with the recent BIOS update, the cuda cores were set back to normal (previously soft locked 10% - no idea why). Timespy now fires stock over 10K. More to come.
I hate synthetic benchmarks they in no way represent real world use. This doesn't tell me if it will replace a 2070 super.

man work on audio in your video! it is so ... can't finish to watch was patient until 5:32. firstable music is so loud at the beginning, after intro when you start talk I can't hear you properly cuz I had to reduce volume and still all the time while you talk music on the background is still sometime even louder then your voice. and some time you intonate so loud after talking quiet. very unsteady and unbalanced sounds.

Ah, I think the R6 is the same as the R5. 115+10W. My guess is Alienware lowered the TGP on these just before launching the X series back in May/June

Yeah it was low for sure. Turns out when AW first launched this they soft-nerfed the cuda core total in the 3070. And later had to release a patch to give it back the missing 10-15% performance

Great review man, I was looking for something like this as there are not many out there right now reviewing this laptop. Unfortunately, mine doesn't come in for a while but I ordered a config much like yours - 3070, mechanical keyboard, etc. I too am disappointed with the 125W 3070 but I think that with the cooling solution they have they just couldn't squeeze any more power out of it. I am definitely going to look into seeing if we can't undervolt the CPU as that seems to be what is the most toasty. The one I ordered does have the 2k 240hz panel though which I am super pumped to see.
