i tried doing my low porosity hair in the shower, like you. i squeezed for better absorption and applied leave in and oil and my flaxseed gel.....i can't believe how juicy my hair is!!! it never gets this moisturized!! thanks. subscribed 🤩
Ohhhh!!!! I like this!!!! I learned a lot!!! My hair is mostly low porosity. I used to cut off a lot of hair because the middle sections were frizzy and the ends were defined. Thought I had heat damage, I don't even straighten or blowdry my hair ... I love clay washes!!! They work beautifully on my hair. I actually get defined hair with no product and airdrying. And finger detangling!!! Thanks, I'm gonna try the squeeze before washing.
OMG!!! I watched this vid last night and used your tips today when washing my hair. This just changed my life!!! My low porosity sections improved so much after this one wash session. Thanks so much :)
I use LCO for my hair. L- creme of nature spray leave in conditioner strengthen & shine C- Shea Moisture Curl enhancing smoothie O-Shea butter or coconut oil. My hair stays moisturized for days. I just ran out of the spray & the smoothie but I will be buying more soon. I love this method.
Hi there. I’m a low porosity girl as well. This vid was helpful. My tips are that heavy creams don’t seem to penetrate my hair. I usually put the heavy cream in a spray bottle and water it down with water or aloe juice if I’m feeling fancy and apply in the shower then apply a light oil. My preferred oil is sweet almond to seal and it helps my hair retain the moisture better.
Correct me if I'm wrong .... The steps go as : Clarifying shampoo .. Rinse Deep conditioning .. Steam then rinse Moisturizing shampoo .. Rinse Conditioner ... Rinse Then moisturize and seal ?
After watching your video, I realize I have been moisturizing my hair so wrong. I always considered my hair normal porosity and would wonder why after wetting my hair, certain sections remained frizzy or wouldn't look as wet. It's because I have more low porosity hair than normal. Your hair is so similar to mine. This video was super helpful, thank you! Oh, and your hair is gorgeous. :)
This was the best hair video I've watched since being natural. You helped me confirm my low porosity textured hair. I appreciated seeing what low porosity hair looked like, I rarely see any TH-camrs whose hair look and feel like mine when showcasing their regimens. Highly informative! thank you!
Natalia Inoa Hi Natalia, when I use the clay cleanser I do not sit under the dryer or steamer. I simply cleanse my scalp then apply more of the clay to saturate my hair so I can detangle with it. The clay contains a blend of oils that help make the hair slippery enough for detangling and it conditions as the same time. I use Wonder Curl Butter Than Love Pudding as my moisturizer and the Curl Control Styler Lotion and the Get Set Hair Jelly by Wonder Curl for styling my washngos. My normal porosity hair air dries in 2 hours. The Low Porosity area takes all day to air dry. I hope this helps!! :-)
Do you detangle your hair at all prior to wetting it in the shower? I've wet my hair without detangling 1st and it was a disaster. How can I avoid this?
thank u so much for these videos ! I wish I came across u sooner. I did a big chop my sophomore year of high school & my hair was dry for years ! I thought I had no curl pattern & I thought being natural wasn't for me. it wasn't until after graduation I decided to research my hair type & came across tons of forums and advice & blogs but your video has helped me the most in all my years of searching . so thanks for sharing !
+Melanin Pinkkk Google "cherry Lola treatment" & see if that helps you. I'm doing a maximum hydration method and one of the steps (& the most effective step in my opinion) is to do the cherry Lola treatment . you can also Google "maximum hydration for natural hair" & the steps should come up for you.
+Melanin Pinkkk The Cherry Lola treatment involves the use of Baking Soda to raise the pH of the conditioner. It appears to work wonderfully for a period of time but eventually the cuticle layer of your hair strand becomes very weak and damaged. People who try this method find that overtime, which varies from person to person, the hair becomes dry and brittle. That is because the cuticle layer is so damaged it is no longer able to hold in moisture. It takes the hair from low porosity to high porosity...another struggle. I encourage NOT to do this method.
Thank you as a professional and thorough caring enough about people and your craft for free. This shows your genuine interest and wanting to honestly help those who can't afford to go to a professional as yourself or others, but want better results. Thank you again.
I surely appreciate all the you do to help us curly girls learn about our hair. I get so confused when you...or anyone, that is..... talk about porosity. I get the part about the moisture in and the moisture out and all of that but to look at my hair and determine by the way it acts if it is high or low porosity is just never going to happen. I can only imagine that I must not be the only curly girl who is confused by all the talk about it. In researching low and high porosity and how to tell what kind of hair I might have I found an actual test where you put a clean hair in a glass of water and if it floats then you have low porosity hair and if it sinks to the bottom of the glass you have high porosity hair. Well, I have to tell you that was soooo simple!! A light bulb moment if you will. So much simpler than all the fussing with looking at my hair trying to figure it out. Finally!! And it may not be scientific but I have to tell you that it works. For the first time in my life I am now able to choose the correct products for my hair that really work. I had no idea my hair could look and feel so wonderful by choosing products. My hair hates protein! And what have I been doing all my life.....yep, using products that contain protein.....because 98% of all hair products contain some sort of protein. What a difference a hair in a glass makes. I can only imagine that your followers would be very pleased if you shared this info with them. Thanks again! Oops! One other thing I wanted to mention is that I have learned from conversations with product manufacturers and reading how to apply products that the proper sequence for products is.....shampoo, condition, moisturize with a leave in and then gel. The gel is always applied last to retain and seal in the moisture and control frizz. Another light bulb moment! ;) Keep up the good work.
This is great info. I have very similar hair texture and porosity. The middle of my hair does not retain moisture easily so I constantly lose length in that area. I hope these tips can work to help me retain length
OMG!! If only I had found you over a year or so ago. I was normal porosity or I thought so. But now I finally realize I'm low in basically the same sections you are. This past year the breakage in my crown from dryness, has me wanting to big chop my hair. But, watching this video gives me hope! Thank You!
Your videos are awesome, very informative, teaching is a gift, and the tone of your voice is very soothing, thank you more than you know, for years many of us have been doing this all wrong.. Blessings and favor to you..
I finally understand the difference and can recognize it!!!! Thank you! Great info and execution. Just subscribed and looking forward to watching more videos!
Thank you so much, I finally understood why my deep conditioning was not working (I was just moisturizing my hair and not washing them with a clarifying shampoo). Thanks to you, everything changed for the best! I wash my hair with Calia purifying shampoo for dry hair I have 3 B/C low porosity hair. After the deep conditioning, (DIY: honey + olive oil+ glycerin) I wash my scalp using a mix of Amla and Shikakai powder with 3 drops of Ylang ylang essential oil. I condition with Garnier (French brand, sulfate and silicon free) Olive oil mask or Sante (organic german brand) normal hair detangler. Then I use Acure Leave-in conditionner + a touch of organic almond or jojoba oil on the ends. I twist brands of hair all over my head And I let my hair dry naturally. Twice a week I co-wash with sante detangler and I just put the Acure leave in conditioner and then I start again with a clarifying shampoo. Thanks to your advice, my hair look amazing. If you have another advice for me...
This video was so helpful! This is exactly my hair. I've heard the terms hight and low porosity before but never really took the time to research it or find out which my hair was. Now it seems like mostly low porosity. My crown looks just like yours in the video. Very frizzy and dry compared to the rest of my hair.
Hi Abena just wanted to give you a brief update. I purchased Aveda shampoo & volumizing clay conditioner & I like them. The shampoo cleanses my hair without leaving it feeling stripped & the conditioner adds moisture. This is is my 2nd week trying them and it's getting better. The first week I had tons of tangles! I My fault! I neglected to deep condition but I won't do that again!!! I deep conditioned overnight with Deva Heaven in Hair then shampooed & conditioned the next day. (we have really hard water here in California - I use a shower filter - and a drought so I've got to be sparing with the water. 😔). Anyway I moisturized with the Butter than Love Pudding, added the Curl Control Styling Lotion & last of all the Get Set Hair Jelly. I'm happy with the results. I have more volume than previously. It's not voluminous but better than before. 👍🏽👌🏽Thank you so much for all of your help in making my natural hair journey more enjoyable. I'm looking forward to your future vids.
This video is awesome! I've struggled with recognizing the difference between low and high for years, but now I'm all good. So much great info and executed wonderfully. Subscribed and looking forward to viewing and learning more!
By far your channel is one of the best, informative on TH-cam. You being a hair care Professional, is an added plus. I recently learned I have low porosity hair, after being natural for 2, going on 3 years, I could not figure out why my hair wasn't retaining length after a while, until now. I was literally taking care of my hair all wrong. Your tips have been beyond helpful. It's only been a week, that I have been subscribed to you & watching your videos. I already can see and feel a difference in my hair. THANK YOU!
OMG this was so helpful! I had no idea that the patch of hair on my temples and in the back of my head was low porosity until I saw your vid ... it all makes sense now ! SMH and I've been educated natural for 12 years, goes to show you can always learn something new ! Maybe now these sections will thrive ! THANK YOU !!!
you are the truth !! wow my low porosity section has always been a lot shorter than the rest of my hair. i need your patience because we are hair twins
new subscriber and I'm already in love with your videos and how beautiful your hair is you are very informative and have a smooth voice it's so therapetic lol I almost watched all your videos
Thank you so much for this video. Now I know why my hair is always so frizzy in the middle and sides of my hair! Now I need to learn how to take care of it. TFS sis!
I couldn't believe my eyes when you combed through the clay with a fine comb. I would have had extreme breakage and pain. Thanks for sharing. Excellent demonstration and explanation.
AgentDouble Oh Soul !! LOL, trust me, the clay does not harden and is formulated with a blend of oils and other ingredients to condition the hair. I had a good amount slip when I was combing through, that's the only way I would do it. :-) I will provide more information on the clay when I do the product review video. Blessings!
Thank you Abena for another great, informative demo-video! I always learn a lot from you about the best techniques for treating natural hair, and how to tell the differences between the various sections. Because of you and this video, I use the technique of gently squeezing my low-porosity hair in the shower to soak up more moisture when wet. Keep up the great work! Ms. ECstreet :)
AMAZING INFORMATION! Thank you for doing this video! I learned so much, and you answered my questions as to why my daughter's hair was getting hydrated when applying water on wash day, and the different textures. Love your hair, looks very healthy and beautiful...
Very helpful video and you have a lovely and soothing voice. Quick question, I'm a little confused about how to work with a rinse out conditioner with low porosity hair and how it may fit in with clarifying hair and deep conditioning routine.
OMG you are so right! I had gotten my hair braided and my mom used my water and aloe Vera juice mix (which I kept refrigerated bc that's how a natural TH-camr did it) not knowing I had low porosity hair... And my mom sprayed that in my hair and then used some oils and moisturizer and my hair was just so oily and after a few days my braids are dry... So now it all makes sense now!! Plus I had got my hair dyed as well.. So I have a lot of growing my hair out to do! I don't want to big chop so I'll be patent! But thank you so much! Now I actually took my water and aloe Vera mix out of refrigerator and now it's on my room! Also, how will you know if your conditioner is thick or thin?
Hi Abena! Would you be able to possibly do a video on how to retain moisture on high porosity hair? I know you have low porosity but I can't find many on high porosity hair
Funny thing is I no longer use capes. I wear a wet suit to cover my body during cleansing and conditioning. Check out my latest video to see what I am talking about. :)
thanks for the video very informative. I think I am between 4B and 4C. When my hair is wet it has a soft wave pattern. My hair shrinks very quickly. I usual twist my hair after washing. Just did the low porosity test and my hair peeked below the surface of the water remaining on top. I will try the steaming. Eve
Thank you so much for the quick response. I've learned so much about my low porosity hair thanks to your videos. I'm going to try these products. Maybe you can make a video on how you use these products together. 😉 Thanks again.
Hi, I'm new to your channel and watched all your videos. Your absolutely right about product buildup and to use shampoo for that. I'm 3 year natural now and has been using conditioner all the time. And my hair literally stopped growing after a year. So happy I watched your videos 👍🏾
Okay. Think i get it now! Watched this over and over. Quick question, after detangling & rinsing out conditioner, would you remove the 'excess' water THEN add the warmed up leave in or are you applying the leave in to soaking wet hair? tia
Thank you so much for always sharing such detailed information. I was wondering, with the clay do you still sit under the steamer and do you cleanse twice as you do the shampoo? Also what kind of gel or styler do you use for your wash and go's and how long does it take to dry?
That is so interesting that you don’t scrub your hair when using shampoo. I have fine hair strands which my hair easily tangles so often it is counterproductive to scrub it then when it come to conditioner. I also notice you don’t pre poo. 🤔 Got me thinking and still exploring the best way to wash my low Porosity hair. I’m not worry about length as my hair will just grow but the health of my hair is important.
Thank you so much. This was most helpful video I have watched. I have low porosity hair and for the longest I have been struggling to retain moisture. My hair would generally get really dry and sometimes itchy. 👏😭😌
I have 4a normal porosity hair, except at the temples. This section on both sides is low porosity 4b hair. I find that I have to really find the grade of the low porosity hair and seriously PUSH product into the hair while I smooth the hair in downward strokes. If I do this correctly, the hair will curl. I also use more oil and less sealant on this hair because creams just sit on the hair like a white film. I spray water on the entire head every morning, and the water just runs off of the temples and drips into the sink. The rest of the hair takes the water and sucks it right in. More often than not I'll wear a headband or pin the temple hair back by day 3. SIGH!
Very interesting video. My overall porosity is normal but at the crown and on one side of the front of my hair seems to be low but it actually opens up rather quickly to receive the moisture I'm not sure about this but when using a clay wash, my hair defines uniformly all Over. I apply it to dry hair and the effect is different than if I wet it first. Seems the clay (mixed with ACJ) penetrates faster. Does clay have an effect on porosity?
Hey Abena! I am a wng low porosity curly girl. I cleasnse my hair once a week with Bentonite clay. Although my moisture retention is increasing my hair still feels dry, but not as much. I still use eco styler and I am thinking that may be adding to the dryness. I have very dense, coarse, kinky coils. Other gels don't seem to have as strong of a hold as eco. There are two ladies from Chocolate Curls Beauty doing a 30 day detox. This consists of using products that does not have castor oil, coconut oil or shea butter in the first five ingredients. Also, no eco styler. My concern is that they are saying Bentonite clay blocks your strands. I value your professional opinion and would like to know what you think. Your comments are greatly appreciated.
+NaturalCurls4Life Hey, thank you for checking in with me first. I feel honored. It's not clear what you all are detoxing from, however, bentonite clay is supposed to draw impurities out of your skin and hair. So long as you thorough rinse the clay from your hair it should be clean and free of blockage. So what is avoiding those particular oils supposed to do for your hair regimen?
+Embrace Natural Beauty Thank you for your response. I've been using Bentonite clay for over a year and my moisture retention has improved. According to Chocolate Curls Beauty (That's their website & fb name) it will add moisture. They say that castor oil, coconut oil and shea butter are heavy oils and once you apply them to your hair then no more moisture can get in. I'm going to continue with my clay washes. Thank you for your professional opinion. I sure wish you were here in GA. If I ever make it to NY, we will meet. Well we've already met, but I would love to have you do my hair. Thanks again!
Thank you sooo much!!! I wish i would have found you 4 years ago!! This is the most helpful video ive seen( for me and my hair )in 4 years!! How long have you been natural? This video is the first i have seen of yours so i am going back and watch your others..
Since you don't rinse with cold water how do you lock it in? My hair looks just like this when wet. My hair looks dry when I get out the shower. Lol. Also I don't think my hair has always been low porosity. About 5-8 years ago I was to retain length and moisture a lot easier. I used to wet my hair often and my hair flourished. Now....crickets
@@NiyaDavisActress It's in the video. She uses the LC process with the Wonder Curl products. The first product was used as her leave in. The next one used as her cream to lock in the moisture. The LCO method is best for low porosity hair but the oil part is not really necessary.
Thanks for your information! Would sitting under a Pibbs dryer with plastic cap make a good substitute for a steamer? If I have dry, lo po 4c hair, do steamers help? What do you recommend
I so needed this tutorial, I think we may be hair cousins lol I needed some new tips. Thanks for sharing....each one teach one, new subbie, I never tire of new peoples input. Much appreciated
Thanks for all the valuable information u bestow on us! I have been following the Maximum Hydration Method, a modified version now, for just about a year, however, I'm concerned about the baking soda and its alkalinity. I do, however, love the results as the moisture is getting in my hair. My problem section is that darn crown, smh! Because I have stopped using the BS as much my roots look like I need a perm lol and the ends are alot more moisturized. I feel like we have the EXACT same hair but it also seems as if my hair was ALOT more coily b4 using the MHM Method. Granted it was a big frizz puff ball until I defined my curls/coils, now it's more wavy when wet. My question, do u think its ok to continue with BS or am I just damaging my cuticles more and more? Sorry for the long windedness... lol
kizzie kente Hey girl, thank you for sharing this. The way to know if your cuticle layer is damaged is when you are getting moisture into the hair easily but no longer able to retain it. At which point the hair is overly porous (High Porosity). Based on the description of your hair, it sounds exactly like mine which means it is retaining moisture. If that is the case, you are fortune that your cuticle is still in tact. Continuing to use BS on the portion of hair that is absorbing and retaining moisture will lead to damage. So do not use high akaline products/ingredients on that part. To get the root to match the rest of your hair you can isolate that area and apply your BS mix there only. When I used the high alkaline castille soap I made sure the rest of my hair was loaded with conditioner and an oil to protect it from penetrating the hair strands. So I recommend you do something of that nature. As your hair grows make sure you monitor the porosity levels, because using the BS will speed up the change rapidly. And you do not want to overdo it. I would love to hear back from you at some point, so keep me posted on your progress. email: abena@embrace-natural-beauty.com Blessings!!
i tried doing my low porosity hair in the shower, like you. i squeezed for better absorption and applied leave in and oil and my flaxseed gel.....i can't believe how juicy my hair is!!! it never gets this moisturized!! thanks. subscribed 🤩

I cannot tell you how much I learn from you. Thanks for being such a wealth of information!
I use LCO for my hair.
L- creme of nature spray leave in conditioner strengthen & shine
C- Shea Moisture Curl enhancing smoothie
O-Shea butter or coconut oil.
My hair stays moisturized for days. I just ran out of the spray & the smoothie but I will be buying more soon. I love this method.
I thought the "L" of LCO stood for Liquid. Hmm...
MsEcstreet Liquid can also include water or aloe Vera
You are such a professional!!! Thank God I found this...THANK YOU

One of THE BEST natural hair videos on youtube
you are stunning without makeup and your hair looks healthy and nice.
Thank you so much, I finally understood why my deep conditioning was not working (I was just moisturizing my hair and not washing them with a clarifying shampoo). Thanks to you, everything changed for the best!

And I let my hair dry naturally.

and then I start again with a clarifying shampoo.
Thanks to your advice, my hair look amazing. If you have another advice for me...
Thanks for the tips! I have low porosity natural hair! It's so hard to get moisture in my hair!

Hi! I love this video but is there possibly a shorter process? I have low probity hair but also Im always busy, as there maybe a quicker process?
you are the truth !! wow my low porosity section has always been a lot shorter than the rest of my hair. i need your patience because we are hair twins
Afeisha Harewood. Girl, we are here (I wish i knew how to do the symbol for eye to eye, LOL) Hang in there! Blessings!
new subscriber and I'm already in love with your videos and how beautiful your hair is you are very informative and have a smooth voice it's so therapetic lol I almost watched all your videos
Very very informative, and well done. Thanks for sharing.
I'm not even done with the video yet but I had to comment because it's blowing my mind. Like squeezing the hair?! Who would've thought!
Thank you so much for this video. Now I know why my hair is always so frizzy in the middle and sides of my hair! Now I need to learn how to take care of it. TFS sis!
Great demo, thank you for sharing! I learned a few things I will trying for my hair.
Thank you for sharing. Very encouraging.
Thanks for sharing I stumbled up on this video and found it very inforamative will try some of your methods for my low porosity hair.
Good info. Was looking for the reason why i don't have curl definition and puffy roots
Can you do a nighttime routine for Wash and go’s on low porosity hair? Do you ever straighten or silk press?
So glad I found your channel!!
Update: I have already bug chopped and I'm 4 months into my big chop now!
Thx for the valuable information!
So glad to see you
You are so beautiful and your beauty is only amplified by your intelligence!
Hi Abena! Would you be able to possibly do a video on how to retain moisture on high porosity hair? I know you have low porosity but I can't find many on high porosity hair
I just came across your channel and I am so glad I did. This video was absolutely perfect. New subbie! Cheers!
OMG u are just like me!!! The crown of my hair omg is low porosity!!! Thanks for sharing.
So very helpful as always! Thank you for sharing this important & very detailed info with us.
NaturallyReflected hey girl, glad you liked it :-)
Very informative. Where did your get the plastic overall you have on while washing your hair? Thanks
it's just a cape. You can purchase a cape from your beauty supply store.
Funny thing is I no longer use capes. I wear a wet suit to cover my body during cleansing and conditioning. Check out my latest video to see what I am talking about. :)
Ok, thank you
thanks for the video very informative. I think I am between 4B and 4C. When my hair is wet it has a soft wave pattern. My hair shrinks very quickly. I usual twist my hair after washing. Just did the low porosity test and my hair peeked below the surface of the water remaining on top. I will try the steaming. Eve
wow this is how my hair is!
I was so ready and excited for you babe
Thank you so much for the quick response. I've learned so much about my low porosity hair thanks to your videos. I'm going to try these products. Maybe you can make a video on how you use these products together. 😉 Thanks again.
Hi, I'm new to your channel and watched all your videos. Your absolutely right about product buildup and to use shampoo for that. I'm 3 year natural now and has been using conditioner all the time. And my hair literally stopped growing after a year. So happy I watched your videos 👍🏾
You’re so pretty! This video helped me alot
You are one helpful woman. Thank you!
Thank you for sharing this information. I will definitely try your wash day technique this weekend.
Great demonstration 😊👍🏽
Hi great video! Why do you deep condition before clarifying your hair? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of deep conditioning?? Thanks!
Okay. Think i get it now!
Watched this over and over. Quick question, after detangling & rinsing out conditioner, would you remove the 'excess' water THEN add the warmed up leave in or are you applying the leave in to soaking wet hair? tia
Excellent video!
Moisturizer action starts at 5:45
Thank you so much for always sharing such detailed information.
No I do not pre poo. But I do scrub my hair when washing with shampoo.
Thank you so much. This was most helpful video I have watched. I have low porosity hair and for the longest I have been struggling to retain moisture. My hair would generally get really dry and sometimes itchy. 👏😭😌
Glad it was helpful!
SIGH!
Thank you so much! This was so helpful!
Very interesting video. My overall porosity is normal but at the crown and on one side of the front of my hair seems to be low but it actually opens up rather quickly to receive the moisture
I'm not sure about this but when using a clay wash, my hair defines uniformly all
Over. I apply it to dry hair and the effect is different than if I wet it first. Seems the clay (mixed with ACJ) penetrates faster. Does clay have an effect on porosity?
Omg this help so much so this happen to my hair too one curls Devine then the other dry and look like it didn't get no moisture
I am going to try to find something other than eco styler gel to see if it makes a difference.
Just discovered your Chanel! Thanks for the details!
Thank you so much for this video! 🙉 So informative🤗
I have low porosity hair. Can warm my shampoo as well to open my cuticles as well if I choose not to use baking soda method?
bTW you are so pretty and you seem like a very nice person I look forward to watching more of your videos
Thank you sooo much!!! I wish i would have found you 4 years ago!! This is the most helpful video ive seen( for me and my hair )in 4 years!! How long have you been natural? This video is the first i have seen of yours so i am going back and watch your others..
Great video, I also have low porosity hair. Do you normally cleanse after a deep conditioner?
Im getting to know my hair and your video has helped me a lot! Thank you ^^
Hello! Great video.. Do you use bentonite clay? If so how would you use it?
Do you final rinse low porosity hair with cold or warm water ??? I've heard cold water and I've heard warm water 😐
+Selena Brown Because I have low porosity is in different areas of my hair I always use warm water for every rinse. Never cool :)
Lol. I forgot about asking this. Ok thanks. Some youtube videos are a little lengthy. I'm sure I didn't watch it through...
This is extremely helpful thank you!!
Thanks for your information! Would sitting under a Pibbs dryer with plastic cap make a good substitute for a steamer? If I have dry, lo po 4c hair, do steamers help? What do you recommend
I love your hair!!!!!!!
Sorry for the long windedness... lol
kizzie kente
Hey girl, thank you for sharing this. Continuing to use BS on the portion of hair that is absorbing and
retaining moisture will lead to damage. I would love to hear back from you at some point, so keep me posted on your progress.

my hair is the same as yours...thanks for sharing
What do u think of African black soap for a cleanse for low porosity hair?
