Umgede Undergound Hide is located right next to Antares Bush Camp in Grietjie Private Nature Reserve, which forms part of Balule and the Greater Kruger in South Africa.
Antares Bush Camp used to be an old field guide training camp, but was transformed into a luxurious self-catering camp in early 2020. It sleeps eight guests in four bedrooms, each with an en suite bathroom and outdoor shower. It also has a fully-equipped kitchen, a swimming pool and a stunning view over the hide and waterhole from the outside dining table and firepit.
Umgede Underground Hide was brilliantly designed by owners, Ian and Mel Owtram. Not only does it give you that perfect eye-level perspective of drinking birds and animals, but it's also incredibly comfortable: it has a large day bed, a fridge and kettle, as well as high-back office chairs. There's also wifi, cellphone signal, power points and light inside. Two floodlights light up the water's edge at night and can be switched on and off from within the hide.
Another great feature of Umgede Hide is the fact that it faces south. This means that you've got great light right throughout the day in the dry season (from June to October) and that you can take photos of the Milky Way from within the hide at night.
