    • @johnweber4577
      @johnweber4577 4 ปีที่แล้ว +71

      Because Liberalism was originally defined as placing an emphasis on individual sovereignty. Now in America it’s basically used as a stand in for the term Progressivism. Largely thanks to FDR co-opting the term after the Progressive movement had started to fall out of favor.

      @jean-louispech4921 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Because the main clash line is not the same in Europe and in the USA.
      In Europe the main clash line is about economy , and then right wing defend economic liberalism, while the left and the progressive fight unregulated capitalism. Then liberal is associated with right wing politics.
      In most western Europeans countries right wing is less about religion, tradition, nationalism, etc... or in a light way. Then there are less clash about societal subjects than in the USA.
      In the USA there is a global consensus about economy between democrats and republicans ( billionaires support both parties) , but the clash line is about societal problems, and then here the liberal position is on the left wing side agaisnt conservatives. Then along the American history of the 20th century, liberal and progressive were associated, and eventually confused.

      He had a pretty clear bias actually but it’s just not obvious to those who don’t study politics (don’t take this as an insult). Liberalism consists of both what Americans call “conservatives” and “liberals”. Both fall under the liberal ideology of free-market economy and individual freedom. The difference is that so-called conservatives in America believe in social traditionalism. This traditionalism by no means at all separates them from the liberal ideology, it simply makes them conservative liberals. Anyway, the bias he showed may have been unintentional but it was there nevertheless (the American bias)

      I'm not American, so my viewpoint here is completely unbiased, just wanted to say that. So, I kinda do agree on republicans on SOME aspects. I'm 100% progressive, I'm part of the LGBTQ+ community, I'm black(more specifically brown) , and I'm an aethist, so you can already tell that I'm not the most "conservative" person, lol. But there are some points I agree on, like Pro-life, well, not entirely. I have kind of a mixed view when it comes to abortion. If it wasn't your fault, if you got violated or sexually abused, then I can completely understand why you'd want to get an abortion. But if you're literally aware of it and decide to not wear protection or you're being irresponsible about it, then i can't really support it. I truly believe that human life isn't a thing that should be taken for granted or lightly. I'm definitely not an extremist about it and I wouldn't go on rallies waving signs that said "you're killing babies you liberal scum", but if you were 100% aware that you were creating a baby and simply decided to not care because you "could abort it later", then I don't think I can really support you on that one. I also do believe that crime should be punished more hardly. I do believe that there are a lot of social issues that cause crimes, and if there's a bigger reason as to why it's happening, I definitely do believe that there are a lot of people who shouldn't get punished for some crimes. But I absolutely cannot have empathy for someone that doesn't have empathy for other people, I like to be the devil's advocate and put myself in the shoes of everyone I interact with, but that's where the line is drawn. If you're killing and robbing innocent people for the sake of your own benefit, then you deserve to rot away in jail for the rest of your life. But those are pretty much the only two things I semi agree with conservatives/republican, I'd definitely say I'm more liberal in that general. With gun control and spendings and regulations, etc, I completely agree with liberals. But as I said, I'm not from the United States, so I don't really need to worry about this, but it's certainly interesting.

There is an inherently deceitful constitution behind a “racial unity” that can only be accomplished by trying to “un-see” people’s identities. So in regards to education, we don’t want society to be race-blind, we just want to make the argument that no one group should ever be treated differently than another. They help me see both points of views equally. I was wondering, If you have somewhat equally split views, wouldn't you call yourself independent?

    • @adios04
      @adios04 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm no political expert, and just a high school student but here is my take. A democrat is someone who agrees with significantly more democratic ideals than republican ideals, and vice versa for republicans. I defined an independent as someone who has views that don't match with either of the typical viewpoints/ideals of democrats or republicans. As for a moderate, I think it's someone who is more 50-50 on republican vs democratic views (as you specifically asked about). If you're something like 60-40, one could say that they're a left/right-leaning moderate. Hope this helps!
      Edit: I realized this question was asked a while ago, but I'm still keep my response haha

      Most conservative ideology has been in existence for thousands of years as it comes mainly from the Bible, while many liberal ideologies come from the rejection of tradition in favor of newer things. There is division because conservatives believe in the protection of constitutional rights while liberals are against them and want new ones that conservatives feel violate the rights of others. Like for example hate speech. Many liberals want the right to not be offended. To conservatives this would mean they would loose their right to free speech as they can't say anything that could offend someone. Things like this cause division because people feel like their lives are in danger if the other side wins.

    Now that mid terms are coming up and a lot of younger people are getting involved for the first time - this gentleman is pretty accurate, despite the video being 4 years old. While he did not talk much about climate change and the like, and is correct that it is a mostly liberal thing, conservatives are the ones who made and still maintain the national parks. The fires in california a while back are a key example of what over regulation on the environment can do: If you over regulate the environment, letting no smalls fires start naturally because of weather, then when one finally does start...it will be much worse. I would say generally speaking, when it comes to actually working with the environment, conservatives are better at it and don't make silly mistakes because they let nature do its thing - think "farmers" and the like...while when it comes to broader areas of concern, like climate change or gas emissions, liberals are much more concerned about it and some believe that the world will end in 10 years.

      being against health care is not individualism by greed.
      individualism makes individuals (including the poor, the women, ect...) the drive of the society.
      The antagonist is authoritarian : the drive of the society is something external and superior to the individual ( divinity, tradition, bank account, strong leader, "market", biological category, etc.... )
      none of the conservative positions are individualists.
      abortion -> authoritarian forcing raped women to keep a future potential baby is not individualist
      not fighting discrimination is not individualist
      rigid/tough view about crime is not individualism
      refusing that individual can get access to education and good health, because it harms a well filled bank account is not individualism. Serving the individual is the core purpose of public service like national education and NHS.
      Non regulation of power of the elite is not individualist, it is just defense of the power. A real individualist society has democratic power in all layers of the society. Individualism push to give to worker a power on things that affect them. This is not what conservative defend.
      Army is not individualist but authoritarian. Only authoritarians peoples defend a strong army.

    I think my viewpoint is a bit more strange - I am extremely left in terms of my economic stance - a huge democratic government that has the power to pretty much regulate all sectors of businesses and companies, ensure tax (especially cooperate welfare tax) is extremely high to fuel and expand public services like the NHS ( I’m from England) and effectively nationalise these. Ensure money is targeted in fighting economic inequality (helping the homeless etc), fund for renewable energy etc and most of my social views are left(liberal). I’m pro abortion, anti guns, anti death penalty, but my point being I feel as if I’m against affirmative action as it seems contradictory to the goal of equality( the main goal for me) as automatically race dictates( or at least suggests your status ) and I would argue that poverty is not a result of race but rather economic factors ( which is why I’m for nationalisation) I don’t know does anyone understand?

      Cam of Steel what's it like believing in things that have historically been bad for everyone? Just curious. You can call right wingers names all you want but at least the policies they want have worked before

      KaiusKC What are you referring to? I’m talking about things like the NHS state free education. Active measures are made to help people who are financially disadvantaged. If your point is that a kind of socialist state is wrong well I would argue a free market capitalist country is extremely unfair and wrong because it makes the ridiculous assumption that without man made statist intervention that the world is already a kind of meritocracy which is completely wrong. I’m from England but in the U.S these ideas of Medicare, education, social services and even the huge military are ideas that are part of socialism. Today America, a first world country, has some of the worst levels poverty, pretty much 3rd world levels. America have left the Paris peace conference on climate change and its government keep time after time cutting corporate taxes for the 1%. Would you regard these as fair choices in the long run? Further there are many cases of ‘right ‘ wing governments doing awful things. I mean the big one (which is prone to all free market economies) is huge recessions. Just like the Great Depression in the 1930s which caused the majority of countries to refuse peaceful negotiations and instead invade others. Like Italy, Japan and Germany which I believe was a huge factor in getting Hitler into power and hence being a major cause of WW2. American imperialism in the 20th century lead to the government giving money power and armour to corrupt dictatorial powers in the South American countries causing mass death and poverty. It was only when Castro and others came along and improved health education and lifestyle for many South Americans. I mean I don’t agree that Castro was a good man as I disagree with many policies he made like towards Cuban nationalism and family values. But the ideas he had for helping the poor are great and it worked through a near socialist/communist economy. I mean there are many other examples of both left and right doing wrong. Rather the debate should not be that but what does a country want and what is the best system to achieve that.
      Many polls have suggested that the majority of Americans basically want socialism i.e free Medicare and larger army and free education but once you mention it’s socialism they hate it which I think comes down to the agenda of American media

      you are a liar history show that left wing policies are better for everyone than right wing policies who just benefit for an elite minority .
      You should think a little before writing propaganda messages.
      Public education allow everyone to get high level of education -> good thing for all
      public health care -> when not managed with private economy in mind, they give the best health services.
      It allow the greatest number peoples to get good health service, and then better health. -> good for everyone.
      private health service reduce access to good health for a lot of peoples -> bad for everyone
      lack of regulation at works gives :
      misery wage for workers -> bad for everyone
      no access to public health service -> bad for everyone
      make strong inequality , in addition of bad social state for most of peoples , it make rises criminality and other bad effects on society -> bad for everyone
      not fighting pollution,means bad health or death for peoples -> bad for everyone
      The best proof are Nordic countries : with heavy social/economic left wing policies ( while not socialist on dogmatic point of view ) :
      They have the best Human Development Index , then left wing work better than right wing policies.
      Western Europe have developed well because left wing/liberal policies made the life better than before.
      Then left winf policies are better for everyone.
      What conservatives are defending is the system at the 19th century ( conservatives = conservation of bad politics in the past ) . All was wrong at this time, a lot of misery, a lot of crime, very few real freedoms, right of vote limited etc....

      You're saying that as if people are making the argument that healthcare being "free" means nobody is paying for it. No liberal makes that argument. Not a single one. Everyone agrees that "Free Healthcare" means the care is paid for either through taxes or by some other means. Now you can argue the merits of how devastating that tax would be, that's fine, that's at least a valid debate. What's not a valid debate is purposefully misrepresenting people's ideas and words, like the word "free" in an effort to avoid a rational discord on the matter.

      DPMixing The USA health system is not just double the UK, it's double that of practically every other first world country. On a graph the USA sticks out like a sore thumb. The USA has decent health care, but nearly half of the money goes to insurance companies who try every trick in the book to deny you health care when you need it, even after paying in 10's or 100’s thousands over the years. Think of socialist health care as being like the USA but without the insurance companies in the middle who literally do nothing but take your money and decide whether you have a right to get well. When 100,000's of Americans are financially ruined for life just for getting ill once in their life this is morally repugnant, and makes the country less competitive in the long term because the ratio of sick unproductive citizens goes up. Every first world country (minus USA) has socialist health care, and it works.

    • @captainobvious1415
      @captainobvious1415 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      True. We would be saving money switching to a single payer. Administrative costs would go down the drain. I remember my father going in to get his sinuses checked out, so a clerk rolls in while he's in the hospital bed asking him all these financial questions and has him make a down payment right there in the hospital room for 5% of his soon to be $4,000 hospital bill just for them to tell him he's okay.
      Our system sucks, but nothing's going to change because Pharmaceutical companies and Insurance companies have Republicans in congress by the balls with campaign finance money.

      Obviously nothing is free, but sometimes things are good investments. On the issue of healthcare it will take an extensive analysis by a panel of economists to determine whether universal health care can be less costly and have a positive stimulus on our economy. The issue is more complicated then simple rhetoric like "nothing in life is free".
