How would you make the high pitched whaling distorted sound like on running away into you for example? I've seen something similar like octave pedals and pitch shifters but they don't seem to do the same thing as theyre fixed at select pitches. Where as on the album it sounds like he's just wildy turning a dial up and down at will, however far he wants to. Is it something like a varispeed pedal?
Your song forever is a long time is so good! I just searched out and bought a 4 track tape recorder because of your video and music. Im really excited to start recording with it. There's just something about how acoustic guitars sound on the 4 track that I can't forget.
@@keiranj5149 My guitar teacher told me it was an echo plex years ago, but I don't think he was correct. Idk though. I dont think its the unit's pitch knob.
@@joeferris5086 you are right. I've since found out he used a digitech pds delay pedal.. hard to get now.. it was a change on the 'seconds' knob that caused the effect. Thanks for the reply anyway though.
funny how people would say that drugs are the sole cause of why niandra sounds like the way it does, but ironically a lot of the tracks were recorded during a time the band had a sober phase with exception being occasionally smoke weed with flea in the garden.
It seems that people cannot fathom how or why would someone make such a vulnerable/crazy/carefree record while being sober, while the reality is that John was like this by nature at that time. Which seems scary and and unnatural to most people, thus they automatically come to the conclusion that he must have been on drugs while recording.
Very insightful of both of you. Most great music like the last half of the album/the untitled songs, that are recorded while a person is using, happen almost 100% of the time in spite of the use, not because of it... Spent a decade of my life learning that & lost LOTS of friends along the way
I really wonder if this album will receive greater recognition. It's one of the unsung classics of the 90s with its rich melancholic textures and experimentation. Doesn't really fall into a genre...post-punk, post-(classic)rock, avant garde. For me it's the quintessential quarter life crisis album. No other album for me has come close to emotively depicting that ebb and flow of despondency, wistfulness and nostalgia. Listened to it a lot during my dark times, and I still listen to every year, it's really beautiful. Thanks for your tips, really insightful.
I know im late to find this... but dude this is fucking AWESOME!!! I remember hearing this for the first time probably like 1995 or 1996. Ive listened to it very frequently ever since. Ive read a lot about how it was recorded... but seeing how it was actually done made my day, Nearly 30 years later!!! Thanks for this!
ok you won my sub with that video. Niandra is like emotions cleanser. A big party with dancing in my sad emotions. A treasure in my life. EDIT: And I'm 666th like on the video, I knew it that it was devils music. First time I've heard niandra is when I was coming back from pilgrimage and priest asked me to carry the cross as everyone was tired so I was holding the cross and put the niandra on headphones :D couldn't be a better oportunity to listen to it :D it sounded devilish as hell but it clicked to me then and is clicking ever since.
3 years late but this is so amazing. You absolutly nailed this and I really feel inspired by this type of creativity that Johns music offers and that you have near perfectly recreated. Thank you❤
I came hoping to have an answer regarding Running away into you and I've been really disappointed that it was done with a pedal and not the actual Tascam. Well, actually I was relieved as I now feel myself better with my Portastudio's skills :D Keep up the great stuff man!
i don’t think you can get the distortion using the tascam 424 mkiii because the dbx noise reduction is built in but i really appreciate this video it’s like my 20th time watching it for reference so thank you
Hey! I stumbled upon your video months ago and now decided to make a video myself about this kind of topic. I wanted to recreate untitled #6 with the gear I got, which is not the real deal haha. I really like the video you made and wanted to ask if I could use a small section of your video for context and cite it. Cheers 👍🏼
Nice! Nailed the tones. Question, is one able to bypass actually recording to tape and somehow record thru straight to a DAW, but while running the input through the tape obviously.
@@jules3317 Not sure if that was true. He may of not been a full blown junkie but I think he was doing heroin and other drugs when recording the album.
@@Beans360 well he recorded these songs during the time where they started making blood sugar sex magic with the red hot the mix took him like 3 years so it’s not record during his addiction but it was at least mixed during his addiction. But if you’re looking for a record where he was in real deep addiction during the recording sessions it’s the album smile you hold from the street
can anyone help me out? i just bought a tascam 424 porta mk1 what do need to do to get the thing to record my guitar i have it plugged in and i have my guitar plugged into it and i just can’t get it to work. thank you so much
how do you make the sound at the beginning of going inside also seen on other niandraLaDes songs i’ve heard you just sing into your guitar pickups but i dosent work with mine
If you want to record with a DAW, I recommend you to plug directly your guitar into your interface without using any amp sim. Just use the preamp of the interface and add some form of "cassette tape" plugin to the guitar bus.
How to sound like John Frusciante 4 track recorder talent and lots of good heroin I tried to sound like John and all I got was hepatitis and now 4 years sober 😂😂 True story
There isn't one, if you want an actual 4-track. Hipster indie artists made the prices skyrocket, even though they were a bit limited and could be trashy.

Scott Weiland nailed the Niandra LaDes sound on his solo song "Chateau Mars"
Cool song thx for sharing
Super clear and right to the point. Awesome video!!

Extracool video, brother. Thanks for that.
Can u do the same video, but about TROWFTD?
nailed it
Damn, but cool thumbnail tho. I would use the image as a wallpaper or som
Thanks dude its so cool to see the whole process done on a tascam, one day I'll find a 424 I can actually afford!
I think some pawn shops are worth watching.
there is one on craigslist
I have owned a 424 for like 25 years now. I need to start using it again.
Amazing. Thanks for this video

I would have guessed he used an actual tape echo machine for the pitch changes and repeats
Would the JHS Crayon be any good for recreating the distortion sound when playing through an amp?
*me and my friends talk about it
How do you digitize the tapes of you don't mind me asking (great video btw)
Great Video! Can you do one for Smile From The Streets You Hold?
So you connect the guitar to the portastudio & from that to amp?
1:53 is that a goosebumps reference?
You forgot one thing... Heroin.
and coke

plug amp into compressor pedal.
Bro nice video, I really want to try recoriding on tape and as i can see john dont used too much gear back the
Less is more
Hello! what kind of cassettes do you use for recording?
Maxell XLII 90
hello! could the tascam portastudio 464 version have the same sound?
I've never tried a 464, but I think they sound similar.
@@ThonyGr thank you very much, also for the content you publish
keep up the good work

Is that the exact 4 track that Frusciante used to record Niandra? That same model?
Yes

Tascam Portastudio Mk1

4 track recorder talent and lots of good heroin

That is why you should never try to sound like someone you are not. ˘J˘
How do you sound now, sober and clean?
Hi, Tascam Portastudio is too expensive for me, can you recommend an inexpensive alternative for $ 150-200?
There isn't one, if you want an actual 4-track. Hipster indie artists made the prices skyrocket, even though they were a bit limited and could be trashy.
Get a Korg 4tracker
Just buy a cheap cassette recorder and record your songs on to that and then record the tape back into the computer.
