Man I remember going there on a school excursion way back in 1974! I was 11 years old. What a sad ending to such iconic structure! Too bad they don’t want to rebuild such iconic place! It’s one of the reasons Puerto Rico used to get a lot of tourists from around the world! It benefited the island. And also helped kids learn more about astronomy and science.🔭 🪐
I knew about the telescope used for the search for SETI! I didn’t know about some of the others I figured out that the building of all those more modern facilities was taken in accountability for not repairing it.
@edolinaoconnor4365 The Arecibo Observatory had a 50 plus year reign and contributed so much to the world of Science and technology. Nothing last forever but they had a good run..
I remember when this observatory was operational while I was starting my engineering career. At that time at the UPR in Mayaguez DSP and satellite image processing in collaboration with NASA became very popular there. I never liked those fields, but now I understand that there could have been a patriotic motivation in entering the DSP/satellite image processing area for collaborating with the observatory with all the data it was generating. That is my guess, I never worked with those groups. Also I remember when seeing this observatory as a kid, I made a dummy mock of it immediately when I got back home.
why am i so impress yet i am native from arecibo.....o0 did i miss something omg... now i need some of coquis cafe so sharing is caring my friend cause this was an awesome video made me think like uff wow i didnt know half of this stuff lol ♥♥ winks ty for the video...
O I know about a lot of great things that where achieved by the telescope. But I love your videos and I know you must know more than me cause you did your research.
I remember when younger, I was living in Puerto Rico and my Parents bought me an Xbox One with Battlefield 4. Imagine my surprise when I started playing online and saw the Rogue Transmission map pop up! It was pretty cool to see the location used as a multiplayer map and have the actual dish and array be destroyed in game.
It is sad, when I pass by and still got their signs advertising the observatory, no mitigation. Same thing happens in Military Bases, left abandoned, since for them, had no military purpose like old days. We have a beautiful name and Island as well, but both goverment and bad administration are self destroying everything and we still declining to a cliff. Thanks for this refreshing video.
Should be rebuilt to full capabilities. I say Jeff bezo should inquire and propose to buy it and use it for his space exploration program... someone should tell Mr Jeff bezo
Even if they did that, it would be obsolete..because more advance Observatories exist in the world today including those in Chile and China.. The Arecibo observatory had a good run at the best and biggest for 60 plus years and they accomplished a lot but by 2016, more advanced ones were being built so it made no sense to keep it open..
Still has a significant importance.it can still help out in space exploration and further exploration of alien beings. Remember there sound waves and electrical sound waves and they still exist and have not evolved in something impossible to find out the explanations kool your right some of the technology is outdated but the still a foundation for improving the landscape and electronics make more modern and up to date...china has the same type telescope as Puerto Rico in the pointing to space umm I??? 3 football field wide not sure. Same principal and construction so it not obsolete or outdated when another foreign country china has the same blue print... definitely needs to be upgraded with new technology that up to date...still beneficial and has extremely tremendous importance to space exploration and finding of alein life..... private investors whoever it is should inquire, can't say something out of date doesn't have any significance when another foreign country china has the same type blue bowl shape telescope dug in the earth helping them Nuthin personal,..but it does have importance
How many Coquies of your family, friends or just known coquies where killed during the modification of the natural sinkhole that was home to your species?
This is bullshit they should rebuilt it. And make it into a scientific center and build a college of science. The government of Puerto Rico 🇵🇷🇵🇷🇵🇷 should be held accountable for allowing it to be removed. 👌👌👌👍
@user-fh8el2gc4e the government of Puerto Rico has no say in the matter, so you can't blame them...plus it is being turned into an education center. .Did you even watch the whole video?
It wasn't removed they simply stupidly chose to not repair it and as the OP explained they are turning it into an science education center and the Puerto Rico government had no inherence on the place as was run by a US Federal government agency.
Thank you for info.
Great Video...Didn't realize the Arecibo telescope contributed so much for the world..

The observatory also played an important part in the Contact movie from Jodie Foster :)

Puerto Rico is more than a colony. The Puerto Ricans are global competitors in all fields.
It was also used by many scientists from different countries on their research for many years!
📡 🤔 Great Video
This gentleman that is talking here is spot on, love the way he informs us of the important aspects of this video, no bs just plain facts 👍👍
As usual a well researched. Well documented video. Well done. Muy bien señor
@TheToto4562 Thank You for the kind words!

I thought so.

1 of my favorite maps on Battlefield 4 AKA Rogue transmission
The givernment didnt take care of it , no. Maintenance for years what a shame
@nilsahernandez2974 Which government?
@@coquireportsee what I mean? ....facts 👍👍
Makes me sad that despite loving astronomy and living on the island I never got to see it bc my family always said it wasn’t that cool, now it’s gone.
Yes it would be nice if they rebuilt it. Sad that the US don’t want to spend the money and they probably think they think don’t need it.
So sorry that the local goverment doesnt care about the magestic of the observatory
@lacaballota47 the local government in Puerto Rico had no say in the matter...It was administered by an agency in the US government .
