I enjoyed the chickens update. My egg lady dropped off 3 dozen brown eggs. I took a half a dozen and made some egg noodles. I had a nice huge beef roast in the oven and my nephew and two friends walked in. Inside, I burst out laughing.... talk about timing. So they had beef n noodles with buttered rolls. They visited and watched some movies and are in their playing games on the tv. He came home from college and brought two friends with him who couldn't get back home. I told them "thank you". and they said "what for?" I said you all went back for seconds and that's the best compliment you can get. Three 22 year olds finished off the entire pan. You will benefit bigtime by having cows. Meat is expensive unless you watch the sales. One store had boneless english roasts $7 a lb and it was buy one get one free. I loaded up because that's my favorite cut of roast. Always so tender and falls apart. I can't wait to see your cows. Watching them graze is so relaxing. enjoy your weekend.
Thank you, this is a great comment. I enjoyed reading it. I had to look up what a boneless English roast was. Here it is called a chuck roast. One of my most very favorite. Chuck steaks as well. They have more flavor than a ribeye.
Awesome video, we got all kinds of rain in eastern Kentucky early spring, but last three weeks has been really dry and hot. Hopefully things will dry up a little in your neck of the woods.
I love muscovy ducks. They are quite the characters. Good eating, too, not as fatty as other ducks. My flock always took off to fly for about an hour. They always came back even though there was a creek & ponds around the area.

A few years ago I found a small short handled one and I thought I’d died a gone to heaven as it’s so great for in my flower beds. Looking forward to seeing your finished greenhouse when it happens. I worked in a greenhouse for quite a few years before my first back surgery and I do miss the beauty of a full growing greenhouse. I would like to see more backyard gardens growing as it is some of the most sustainable living not to mention good eating! We are getting so much rain I can barely get my yard work done but if we didn’t have rain we’d complain about that too I suppose. Also looking forward to cows in the pasture. I guess I live vicariously through the TH-camrs I watch!!!:):):)

Joe, doing the chicken coop made me laugh remembering doing ours and the hogs, cows and horses and always having, “help” from the animals. Yes but like I said, in the winter, it is all frozen and I cant get it out. Usually I would have done it earlier in the spring but there were other projects more pressing for time. Doing it more often does not help with the smell, it just shortens the time you are in there smelling it. A chicken coop really is not all that stinky until you start scraping it all up to remove it.

how many pasture acres do you have that are truly edible/sustainable? If you have a cow/calf pair and that is it a handful of acres would be all you need so rotational grazing for 2 is probably not needed especially supplementing with Grain/Hay. Sounds like you want milk so it will need more than just grass..
Joe we just got rid of 7 or 8 roosters that we had!! We had to many and they definitely didn’t get along to well!! Several of them definitely had some of the thickest and longest spurs I have ever seen before!! One had over 4”1/4” spurs on him!! I can definitely tell that all the hens are much happier now not getting their backs all torn up all the time by the different roosters!!! We did have one hen that had 7 babies this year and hopefully they all will make it this year!!! We usually have something get all the little ones and we end up having to incubate more so we keep having chickens!!! We have had chickens for the past 20 years now!!!
Joe, have you ever considered setting up a water catchment system to collect the water from your sump . To use for your garden and animals. Just a thought , free water is always a plus
Because as of right now it would get way too much water. I would need to be able to stop and start it and I have not had the time to figure out a good way to divert it when not needed.
He died last winter. I have no idea how, I just went in there one day and he was dead. I did not much care for that rooster because he would attack people but I was not the one that ended him, I just thought about it a lot.
I hope so, 2 months and they will almost be here and right now I look at the property and because of the upcoming cows I do not mow about 4 acres I usually do, and to me it looks so "messy." Lol. I am missing my golf course (even though I do not golf) looking lawn.
So maybe you should put that rooster in the cooking pot (if he's not earning his feed) And get one that will start a new bunch of younger chickens. That's my two cents..
That rooster takes such good care of the girls as far as showing them where food is outside and warning them if he thinks danger is around, he will not go in the pot. Just because he doesn't perform does not mean he is a bad rooster.
WE live in the south eastern part of Minnesota we boarder Wisconsin and Iowa and it just got done raining again this is. Sat June 22 24..We do have some flooding in some areas around us. 😢
They will eat all the green off it though, as far as their heads will reach. We had them when I was a kid and the deciduous and the coniferous trees were bare up as far as their heads reached. They will not though if the pasture area is big enough so they always have grass which tastes better than leaves to chew on.
I'm only two states away and we haven't had a drop of rain in at least two weeks and it is hotter than blazes here. Do those long sharp spurs ever cut into the roosters opposing legs?
It is raining pretty hard outside here at the house right now. .48 inches have fallen and they are predicting another half inch. A balmy 47 degrees out there as well. Lol.
@@charlieretroI agree. One hidden snag will rip out hoses and cause damage. Maybe rent a skid steer for a day with a forest mulcher attachment on the front.
Whatever gallon is the cheapest. Sometimes if I run out I will just put motor oil in there. It all works. When my dad went moose hunting years ago, they had a chainsaw with vegetable oil in it and that is what they used to half the moose.
I will get one eventually (a skidsteer) but you still cant get a skidsteer into the chicken coop so it would save me no time there. It would be nice on the fence line though but even then, it would have to be a tracked one or it would have been buried in the woods. I had a Bobcat 863 diesel in the past and they are nice, but get stuck pretty fast if you are not careful.
just watching you bust your butt trying to create a path thought a tracked skid steer with a mulcher would make your life easier we aren't getting any younger my friend
We have 3 of them mixed in that coop. As of last night we now have 5 ducks in that coop along with the chickens. Maybe that is why it was so ripe in there. Lol.
Ha. About 3 inches less than it has gotten so far. Lol. It is raining out there right now. Our soil drains pretty fast so it should be ok but everything is behind because it has been wet but also so cold. Garden plants love heat and we have had very few days that got out of the 50s and low 60s this year so far. We need some nice dry 80s.
7 inches of rain this month, almost 17 inches this year so far. That is where the water table is right now. Like every year, it will go down. You hit water at 60 inches below the ground here when it is a dry year. I hit it at 30 inches when I was digging the posts in for the gate to the cow pasture a few weeks ago.
(I'm at 8:40 so don't know if you've covered this yet). Have you got a geo-map function on your phone that lets you log the position of the previous set fence posts? That way you can see on a map online where they are and you only have to move the ones that are way out (if you want the fence to be straighter).
Why not run that sump pump pipe underground and further away from the house? Seems like pumping it out and dumping it right next to the house like that is counterintuitive, especially during extended rainy periods
It is not the water seeping in the basement, the reason we need to pump in the spring is because that is where the actual water table is right now. until all the ditches and swamps in the area drain down into the St. Louis river, that pump will keep running. Dumping 15 gallons out on the ground so it can slowly seep down, is just a tiny problem compared to what needs to happen for it to dry up, which is... Time.
Hey Joe, I follow a channel called fy nyth she put out a video “cleaning out the chicken barn in over a year”. I’m telling you about it because her coop lasted 14 months without the strong smell. She basically used pine shavings, some hay or straw and she tossed about some fresh herbs to help with bugs and mites. She was only cleaning it out due to the amount of dust that was building. Anyways just thought it would help you maybe you wouldn’t have to deal with the smell next time.
shouldn’t a coop be cleaned at least every month? it’s gross envisioning the poor chickens walking thru that filth. never mind eating think coming out of that coop
"23:00-23-23:25"
That will make a huge difference getting the water away from your homes base tile and sump system!

You might consider using Sweet PDZ for your coop!! Spread it on the floor before you put your bedding down!! Works great for odor and moisture..
Joe, if you sprinkle a little fast acting lime on the floor before re-haying, it'll kill the smell and thicken the egg shells.
I don't know what you paid for that tractor Joe, but it has more than earned its keep. What a workhorse it is!

Sorry Joe i have to disagree chicken coop is not the worst Duck coop is worse by far
We have 3 of them mixed in that coop. As of last night we now have 5 ducks in that coop along with the chickens. Maybe that is why it was so ripe in there. Lol.
Thanks for video Joe. How much more rain can your garden take?
What happen to the bee hives?
I wish the young workers of today had half your gumption. It’s shameful what they consider a hard days work. Wasn’t allowed in my 61 years of working.
no better egg than a duck egg
joe i use the zoeller sump pumps on my job and if you are using those forget about it 30 yrs never been called back they work !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why is there so much water collecting? Where is it coming from?
7 inches of rain this month, almost 17 inches this year so far. That is where the water table is right now. Like every year, it will go down. You hit water at 60 inches below the ground here when it is a dry year. I hit it at 30 inches when I was digging the posts in for the gate to the cow pasture a few weeks ago.
where are the bees
(I'm at 8:40 so don't know if you've covered this yet). Have you got a geo-map function on your phone that lets you log the position of the previous set fence posts? That way you can see on a map online where they are and you only have to move the ones that are way out (if you want the fence to be straighter).
Is that some swampy land that your sump pump pumps water out too?
No.
Why not run that sump pump pipe underground and further away from the house? Seems like pumping it out and dumping it right next to the house like that is counterintuitive, especially during extended rainy periods
You're right. I ran mine 200 feet from house into dry well. Works awesome. Lots of work. Would make an awesome video! Right Joe? Lol
He’s said in a previous video he and Melissa discussed some way to save it and use it for watering. Not enough time this year.
Time.
I’ve watched your videos for some time. You really should have help for all your projects.
That King Ranch still runs good. They have these patch panels that glue on now for those bedsides and fenders
if you make your chicken roost all the same level instead of multi tier like you have it will help with heirarchy problems with your flock
Dumping sump water that close want it seap back thru again?❤
A+
Try out a forestry muncher that would be a good video and easier on you
You could really use a bobcat with some sort of brush hog.
Really enjoyed watching 👍👍
U work hard time to goto tent for fishing fun when work is done 🎣🎣🎣
Dry here in Pa, can you please send some rainour way.
Sooooo, u do not hose out the coup?
Lol. No. They are chickens, I see no need to wash out the coop. This is a farmstead, not a 4h building.
we just had a 3 day heatwave in Toronto
