Today, we have another great demo and giveaway for you! In this video, we will be trying out the wonderful new MA-201fet from Mojave Audio! To test out this mic, I am going to be recording a whole song - guitar, bass, tambourine, vocals, and all! I have used Mojave microphones before, but not to record all the parts of a song before, so this is going to be a lot of fun.
Part of what makes me so excited to try out this microphone is the people who were involved in creating it. Mojave Audio was started by John Jennings and David Royer, and they brought their first microphone to Dusty Wakeman, the world-class engineer who ran Mad Dog Studios in LA for many, many years. There are a lot of talented people involved in this company and the making of these microphones, so I am very excited to see how it sounds!
The MA-201fet is a large diapragm, phantom-powered, solid-state condenser microphone with a fixed cardioid pattern. It is the same design as their more expensive tube microphone, but a FET version, and the two share a lot of the same characteristics. This microphone gives warm, full-bodied reproductions of vocals and instruments, with none of the high frequency distortion artifacts that are common with modern condenser microphones.
Each and every one of their microphones is carefully tested and evaluated, so you can be sure you are getting a well-made, high quality microphone. I loved the way this microphone captured everything I needed to for this track. We are going to give you the multitracks from the song so you can hear for yourself how wonderful this mic sounds!

If I was going to put a cover together like you did in this video, I might try Van Morrison's "Here Comes the Night".
I would totally use this for just about the same application as in this this video. But I will say this. STOP BEING SO HARD ON YOUR VOCALS!!! Dude. You killed it. Seriously. Sure I could hear the correction moments. But you should totally be kinder to yourself.

You're very kind! The song was written by Gary Brooker Keith Reid Matthew Fisher of Procal Harum, based on Johann Sebastian Bach's “Sleepers, Wake!” and “Air on the G String”.
We have 2 MA-201 fets ... I support your thoughts about it having a classic, deep, detailed sound. It's a pro mic. It's just it's own thing. It doesn't seem like it's close to something else. It's crazy that the likes of David Royer inspects and signs a card for every Mic that comes out of their shop. Can't say enough about them. Not sure why you self deprecate your talents (singing voice, guitar and drum skill etc). You always seem to pull together a solid performance a lot of people could only hope to achieve.

Such a great mic. Recently sold mine to get the Telefunken CU-29. The 201Fet may be a future repurchase for me though, lovely Fet mic, and one of my favorite mics to date as a drum overhead.

So glad you are reviewing some Mojave stuff. I own two 201 FETs and they’re awesome. I love using them as overheads or one as an external kick drum mic. I also own a 200 tube version and several years ago sent it back to be serviced by Mojave before a big session. At some point I got a call from Mojave and actually talked to David Royer himself who was working on my mic. Don’t know if that’s typical or not but I love small companies that are accessible and take care to make sure their products are the best. Thanks Warren!

Great review. I picked up the 201fet two years ago and use it for hip-hop vocals. The sound is warm and amazing...and the jensen transformers have a way of really smoothing out any mid-rangy or harsh frequencies. Highly recommended.

You've got quite a nice voice, really. Excellent demo of the mic! "Affordable," though, is relative - this mic sounds great, but it costs more than all the mics in my collection combined! Maybe someday...

Glad you’ve gotten to spend some time with Mojave. I’ve gone through a few condensers but keep coming back to the Mojave stuff. I’ve got the 201, 301, and the gorgeous 1000 in my locker now. Great company!

This is a great sounding mic. I like it a lot. Personally, I prefer the MA300 & MA1000 still; but this is nothing to sneeze at. Mojave, in my opinion, produces the absolute best mics on the market at their price points. Aside from maybe Blue and the SM57, no other company compares

Tones were great but I think gain structure was off...I was hearing a bit of distortion. That being said, you really do have a good voice and I didn't realize you played guitar that well ;). Definitely sounded nice and warm. Big question that you didn't address though...what was your signal path? Preamp? Compressor? Cables?

I am a tenor pop singer, that mainly sings worship songs and acoustic covers. What are your opinions?
Hello Warren, first I would like to thank you for all the hard work you do to spread your knowledge and experience. Second, I was wondering do you have any tips about what type of microphones work best with different types of preamps? Not by Tonality but for example, A dynamic with a tube based preamp (transformer and tube) or a Condenser with a transformer based pre (JFET with a transformer). I'm just curious if certain circuits or components operate better with one another.

If I sent you edited drum multitracks.... would you mix them for an episode? These are recorded with "middle of the road mics". Could send you more details in a DM. It would be cool to see you work on tracks that could relate to a larger portion of your audience. Getting Nashville drum tones right off the rip is a big reach for so many home studio engineers.
