The bigger auction houses in dealers that run the hobby will not move from CGC to PSA because CGC provides them with gift grades constantly. Just look at that giant size X-Men 19.9. It’s all you need to know,

PSA has never damaged my magic cards or accidentally marked and slabbed everything in an order as the wrong grade (I once had an entire 25-book submission slabbed at 9.0.... since several CGC reps refused to consider that I was not lying about it, I ended up cracking most of that order, sending the books back in, and getting mostly 9.8s on the re-grade).
All that being said, I'm going to continue to use CGC for the time-being, despite some of the huge issues I've had and my having more trust in PSA. I still respect that CGC does a lot of things right. And from an investor standpoint, it's still the way to get the best resale value; and from a collector standpoint, I'd like to maintain a consistent look.

What if PSA somehow begins like Robin Hood, handing out 9.9/10 for Bronze and Copper age books submitted by Regular Joes (non-auction houses/big dealers)
You'd have to believe it's game over for CGC at that point.

Best thing psa can do is restore the honesty to the 9.8 versus 9.9 nonsense. Cgc changed their standards on this after 20 years. Total bs. 💩

Competition is always great. Regarding silver age and golden age comics, CGC is the clear cut leader in valuation. However, with regards to bronze and modern age books, CBCS tends to be within 10% in valuation to CGC. Plus, they don't charge you additionally the greater the value your book is.

Shawn, I agree that PSA has a tough climb ahead of them to compete with CGC in the COMIC BOOK market. However, a lot of people who collect and grade comic books, also collect and grade cards. Is it just my limited perspective, but do collectors give premium to Pokémon, Magic, and Marvel cards graded by PSA? Most comic book stores, rely on the sale of “cards”, toys, and Pops to sustain. I believe PSA will have to market, incentivize, and bundle the card grading angle with the comics to “comic shops” and “personal collectors”. The dealers and auction houses are married to CGC and that would be a messy divorce.

Great video and analysis. Thanks Shawn. PS. On one of your next videos on graded comics could you touch on "high quality" labels auction houses put on specific comics and how they affect value or is it all BS. Example. I saw an AF 15 at comicconnect I believe that was a 5.0 that had a QES label on it for being a top example in the grade. I noticed it sold for about 20k more than another 5.0 a week before. But upon further analysis it looks like this is just something comicconnect does in house to boost sales of their own comics. I guess I'm just looking for clarification on if this is even worth considering when bidding.

Would it make sense for cgc to create a new type of grading case that makes it possible for the owners to have access to viewing the other pages inside of the comics or is that process just going to raise the prices higher for grading and make the original cases more valuable ?

My biggest gripe with collectibles is that demand seems set in stone. Collectors don't have a way to add value to anything so you have to hope that whatever you acquire increases in value over time.

Uh...it's always been that way... Here's the better bet ...collect the shit because you LIKE it and don't care if it will go up in value. If you're looking to invest put your money regularly in an S&P 500 index fund. At least it's liquid and usually....over time....goes up in value.

PSA will absolutely make CGC nervous... your typical upstart competitor is constrained by capital available experience and PSA has both a solid rep in a near-identical biz and a lotta $, so I think you can look for a little competition from each in the form of specials and possibly reduced grading fees...

Here's my thoughts....IF the dude bought an old, small CT scanner....he can do whatever he wants with it. I will say this - I used to work for a company that MADE actual, LARGE CT scanners...and if that dude doesn't take the necessary precautions to protect himself from the radiation......he won't live to enjoy his collection OR the money he will make.

CGC has a huge upper hand over PSA because of graded pop census vs few raw copies, esp silver/ golden age which is more mature market and where true investor value is.
Unless PSA can somehow convince the existing CGC holders to reslab their golden/ silver age comics through some revolutionary grading technology etc, CGC will lead the market for foreseeable future.
Pop census for modern/ copper age is of not much value. There are too many copies out there so I wonder where is PSA competitive edge in this game

PSA? PSA = lack of consistency........I wouldn't send them a beat-up 1980's TV Guide with ALF on the cover to grade.....much less a book of ANY consequential value. Some of the video's showing what PSA has done to cards (damage) and how badly they are inconsistent is appalling IF I was to EVER get something graded....I wouldn't send it to PSA.
