1978 SPECIAL REPORT: "TIM AND MIKE CARTER SPEAK OUT ON JONESTOWN"

  • By October 1978, all of the defectors had allied with Stoen and the Concerned Relatives.
On October 3, Stoen told the State Department that he would retrieve his son John from Jonestown by force if necessary. Three days later he sent a telegram reiterating the threat and warning of the danger of mass suicide at the settlement.
As pressure grew, the Temple learned that Stoen would accompany a investigatory trip by Rep. Ryan to Guyana. On November 15, 1978, both Grace and Tim Stoen traveled with the Ryan delegation to Georgetown. However, they were not permitted to accompany the delegation on its trip to Jonestown on November 17.
While the Stoens remained in Georgetown, the Ryan delegation was attacked on November 18 at an airstrip in Port Kaituma, near Jonestown. Ryan and four others were killed by Temple members wielding rifles and shotguns, while several others were injured.
Stoen encountered Jones' son Stephan in his Georgetown hotel, neither knowing that Jones was conducting a mass murder-suicide two hundred miles away.
As they spoke, 909 inhabitants of Jonestown, 276 of them children, died of apparent cyanide poisoning, mostly in and around the settlement's central pavilion. An audio recording of Jones, speaking to his followers during the massacre, mentions Stoen: Jones stated:
What we'd like to get are the people that caused this stuff, and some - if some people here are p - are prepared and know how to do that, to go in town and get Timothy Stoen, but there's no plane. There's no plane. You can't catch a plane in time. He's responsible for it. He brought these people to us. He and [Jeannie Mills]. The people in San Francisco will not - not be idle over this. They'll not take our death in vain, you know. ...
It's suicide. Plenty have done it. Stoen has done it. But somebody ought to live. Somebody - Can they talk to - and I've talked to San Francisco - see that Stoen does not get by with this infamy - with this infamy. He has done the thing he wanted to do. Have us destroyed. ...
Tim Stoen has nobody else to hate. He has nobody else to hate. Then he'll destroy himself.
    - Jim Jones on the final "death tape"
Jones also discussed whether the Temple should include Stoen among the names of those committing "revolutionary suicide", and whether to include children in the plan:
do you think I'd put John's life above others? If I put John's life above others, I wouldn't be standing with Ujara [nickname of Don Sly, a Temple member who attempted to stab Rep. Ryan]. I'd send John out - out, and he could go out on the driveway tonight. ... I know, but he's no - he's no different to me than any of these children here. He's just one of my children. I don't prefer one above another. I don't prefer him above Ujara. I can't do that. I can't separate myself from your actions or his actions.
    - Jim Jones on the final "death tape"
Six-year-old John Stoen was found poisoned in Jim Jones' cabin at Jonestown.[66] The mass murder-suicide was the greatest single loss of American civilian life in a non-natural disaster until September 11, 2001.

He knew all that was to be known in Jonestown and what was to happen on that day, yet he did nothing to save 900 lives. I have watched several interviews with Tim Carter. I have never questioned his story. People think he's lying bc he took an opportunity to get out of there. I would've done the same thing! They left the suitcases full of money in the jungle so it was a not amount money. It was an opportunity to get out with their lives. I've never heard any significant changes in his story beginning with this interview which occurred shortly after it happened to most recent interviews. I guess I am just wondering what facts people have for accusing him of knowing more than he's told or that he was somehow involved. I have read books by survivors and I don't understand why they stayed with Jim Jones even before Jonestown. But, I wasn't there and don't know what caused people to blindly follow him. I recently saw a video of a newsprogram from '78. The guy Interviewed insinuated that the shootings at Port Kaituma were the random act of Jim Jones' delusional enforcers, which triggered Jones to implement "White Night". Whether this was true, or not, the decision to kill Congressman Ryan, et al, was last minute, rash and confused, as was the decision to implement "White Night". The Csrters were very likely trusted lieutenants of Jim Jones, but as any other trusted figures, with the exception of Sharon Amos, their loyalty didn't extend much further than the gates of Jonestown. It's not hard to consider that they were considered to transport wealth, by Katsaris (perhaps Jones, as well) because of a mixture of youth, health and persumed loyalty. As soon as they left the compound though, the grasp of Jim Jones was gone and they were left to their own survival instincts.

What I’m still trying to figure out is why Larry Layton didn’t do serious jail time in Guyana. He shot both Vern Gosney and Monica Bagby, and tried to kill Dale Parks. He admitted as much. That’s two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and three counts of attempted murder. That adds up to a life sentence in American courts, yet the Guyanese legal system tossed him. Yet Chuck Beikman, who I’m pretty sure didn’t kill anyone in that bathroom, did five years. I’m pretty sure it’s because the Guyanese wanted to wash their hands of the whole Jonestown affair.

Tim and Mike Carter gave multiple interviews from Georgetown just a few days after the massacre. They're very insightful and very anti-Jim Jones here, however why weren't they before Nov. 18th? Considering all the insane tirades on the tapes, the all night "white nights", the concentration camp conditions, they didn't notice anything amiss before? 25:50 "You're liars". I don't think they were, however we know that Tim was kind of a righthand man of Jim Jones. The one hiding the most was Mike Prokes who was going along with these interviews, all the while totally pro-Jones and ended up committing suicide 4 months later in tribute to his hero Jones. I understand this is your opinion and respect that. But you have to consider that - even in the beginning - Jones engaged in behavior that someone of even a modicum of intelligence would see through. Healing the sick, for example. And of course, those “healed” were later revealed to be Temple members acting for unsuspecting would-be converts.
Brainwashing and dictatorship of any type occur gradually. People have a natural defense mechanism toward being controlled, and it takes a lot to break down that defense. Even in the beginning, Jones was interested in controlling people. He didn’t *become* crazy: he became *crazier* . And so much of his ability to break down defenses had to do with the rhetoric he used. If things seemed better in the beginning, it’s cause that’s how he sold it. Sadly, many people in power in California politics bought it hook, line, and sinker.

I think tim was given a final mission to go kill someone. maybe pretend to give money to someone and then kill them. he seems too cold in this interview. He seems a little normal these days but he just doesn't seem innocent to me. Why would Jim Jones leave this task to you? Who are you to him

That last sentence is a great point. If he is telling the truth, he clearly knew bout all the other stuff, Jim jones was evil, but he was not dumb, he must’ve had a reason to trust Tim for the final mission. I never even thought about that before but omg

They asked a bunch of unnecessary questions and repeat it the same questions over and over when they were clearly told the first second and third time. In my opinion the interviewers did a very poor job, they are very repetitive and antagonistic and a very slow methodical way. They seem to act more like detectives than journalists in which they've already talked to the detectives about the jonestown situation and it seems to me the so-called journalist have a lack of understanding when it comes to people that have been indoctrinated and that are dealing with trauma because of offense that were reoccurring that led up to one awful finale of an event but yet in steel they're prying for answers that they're not going to get and they know it but yet for their own gratification they're putting these people through it over and over again by asking these remedial questions.

That's what a good reporter does, plays detective. Today, reporters are merely actors who get paid to read a script, those who control what you see on the fake news , control what people think, kinda like Jim Jones himself, he only allowed his followers to hear what he wanted them to hear. But hey, go ahead and drink that liberal democrat sponsored fake news kool aid every day.

As I said in an earlier comment, Carter had just seen his wife and child die in front of him. Everything he had ever known died at Jonestown. He is obviously in an advanced state of shock in this interview.
