1978 SPECIAL REPORT: "RELATIVES OF JONESTOWN VICTIMS SPEAK OUT"

  • Meanwhile, in late 1977 and early 1978, Tim and Grace Stoen participated in meetings with other relatives of Jonestown residents at the home of Jeannie Mills, another Temple defector. Together, they called themselves the "Concerned Relatives".
Tim Stoen engaged in letter-writing campaigns to the U.S. Secretary of State and the Guyanese government, and traveled to Washington, D.C. to attempt to begin an investigation.
In January 1978, Stoen wrote a white paper to Congress detailing his grievances and requesting that congressmen write to Prime Minister Burnham; 91 congressmen wrote such letters, including Congressman Leo Ryan.
On February 17, 1978, Jones submitted to an interview with San Francisco Examiner reporter Tim Reiterman.
Reiterman's subsequent story about the Stoen custody battle prompted the immediate threat of a lawsuit by the Temple.
The repercussions were devastating for the Temple's reputation, and made most former supporters more suspicious of the Temple's claims that it was the victim of a "rightist vendetta".
Still, others remained loyal. On the day after Reiterman's article was published, Harvey Milk - a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors who was supported by the Temple - wrote a letter to President Jimmy Carter defending Jones "as a man of the highest character," and stating that Temple defectors were trying to "damage Rev. Jones' reputation" with "apparent bold-faced lies".
On April 11, 1978, the Concerned Relatives distributed a packet of documents, including letters and affidavits, that they titled an "Accusation of Human Rights Violations by Rev. James Warren Jones" to the Peoples Temple, members of the press, and members of Congress.
In June 1978, Layton provided the group with a further affidavit detailing alleged crimes by the Temple and substandard living conditions in Jonestown.
Tim Stoen represented three members of the Concerned Relatives in lawsuits filed in May and June 1978 against Jones and other Temple members, seeking in excess of $56 million in damages. The Temple, represented by Charles R. Garry, filed a suit against Stoen on July 10, 1978 seeking $150 million in damages

No funeral homes in the US wanted to bury the bodies bc they were filled with poison but there was over 300 bodies that no one claimed... A lot of people who ended up in Jonestown were homeless and vulnerable and no one claimed their bodies...They had nothing to lose so they chose to go with him to Guyana. I was 8 years old when this happened and I remember seeing Maria Katsaris on the news the night before they k*lled themselves, I woke up the next morning and they were all dead.. It was very sad...Thanks for posting.

No cemetery wanted the bodies bc of the social taboo that it created to have a monument to that monster a lot of healing time was needed. Jones has his name right there on the plaque at Evergreen with all the other victims. Most bodies were claimed the main bodies, like 330 or somewhere in that neighborhood, are the children that were there. Jones had manipulated the system to be given guardianship over a lot of orphans and wayward children because they brought in nice government checks that they never saw a dime of. There's very few bodies that went unclaimed the ones that I am aware of were people whose families couldnt afford to bury them. The U.S kept their Social Security checks and death benefits to pay itself back for the clean up. At first they told Guyana to just dig a pit and dump them to which they refused on the basis of community health issues. Cyanide doesnt seep into the ground and contaminate that's like some next level horror movie cyanide😂 Also technically no one in Jonestown was homeless as they had a home in Jonestown and before that they would have lived in the church on Geary street, well before Jones burned it down. If you are ever curious as to what happened in the aftermath the RYMUR file contains pretty much everything and is a fascinating read👍

@@praisekek Jonestown.sdsu.edu in the keyword box type "RYMUR". No there was no conspiracy as far as a cover up. All of Mae Brussels audio has been deleted as well. That doesnt mean that she was right it just means some snowflake wanted to control what information is available to people. I guess its still a secret that you cant delete the internet. There is a lot to this story so I cant really go into details without a specific question. As far as a conspiracy you would be better to point out that Tim Stoen was able to get charges dropped against Jones after he was caught by an undercover cop for lewd acts in a public restroom. Seeking an intimate moment with other men in the restroom to be precise. He also had the arrest sealed so that the media couldnt find out. Another "conspiracy" is that there are several papers that were local who were investigating the People Temple yet Jones was not only able to shutdown the investigation but was after that able to have published People Temples propaganda without so much as a fact check before it went to print. Theres also some concern as to how much Jerry Brown, Willie Brown and S.F Mayor Moscone knew about Jones having his members sign over all they owned to the church.
Most people dont realize that before he became a Congressman that Leo Ryan was a school teacher. What got him involved other than it being in his district was that a friend of his whos 2 daughters Ryan taught in school had gone to Jonestown and his friend became a member of the Concerned Relatives. Again this story is extremely complex with a lot of working parts and it didn't happen in a vacuum which I feel people have a hard time understanding as they look back on history.
The closest thing to a "conspiracy" would be the fact that the FBI had placed a woman in an asylum who had seen the shooter of MLK in order to hide her from a subpoena issued by Congress to testify that James Earl Ray was in fact not the man that she saw shooting from the bathroom window. Mark Lane, Jones' lawyer, was also heavily involved in that case and somehow slipped the woman into Jonestown without the Feds knowing where she died on November 18th. Most conspiracy theories start with her with the basis being the government killed 900 people just to prevent her from exposing that the FBI killed MLK not a lone racist. If you read this great job champ😂 If you have any specific questions I can do my best to answer them. I was no there but have done years of research on the subject. It was the basis for my masters thesis.

No private property...same as they are pushing now. These people worked 16 hours a day then had to stay up all night in meetings. They only slept 4-6 hours a day. They would be tortured if they fell asleep. I wish people would wake up and see what is happening in our country. If you watch the videos they said they lived 4 families to a tiny house. They are currently pushing tiny homes and they only want 10% of the people to eat meat and dairy. The rest they want to eat cricket powder and roach milk. People need to wake up!!!

The first guy he gets it. Even in my own family, there are members who are intelligent beyond belief, but unfortunately, the gullibility undermines it. They have fallen prey to smooth talking men, MLM's and scams, and I've asked them, "What is it that you're not seeing?" The response is, they don't want to see the bad in things, so they focus on the good. They'll see signs of something being wrong, but they don't trust their judgement and they're afraid they'll miss out on something great. They need to see hardcore proof something is wrong. So I've conclude they do see something is up (because they're not dim witted), but do not trust their judgment, or they'll want something so badly, they'll only see the good and ignore the bad. Also, they're highly emotional people; if something appeals to their feelings, all logic goes out the window and all facts are ignored. So 2+2 can equal 5 if the reason given makes sense to them emotionally, and it's almost impossible to get them to think logically.

I am inclined to disagree. This is what happens when everyone except you is responsible for your misery. That one woman on the death tape ticks me off. "It broke my heart to see them (14 people mind you) leave, mostly White people. If they dont care now they never will so I say we should kill ourselves". Woman in her 70's condems children to death bc those mean White people wouldnt stay, pathetic. This exact thing is currently the flavor of the month with the youth. They dont understand Socialism either but it sounds good. No system of government will matter to these people bc at the end of the day they are simply angry and a hug could have done wonders.

Lots of people (I would say most of us).have fellow human beings they idolize and want to emulate but that does not cause us to end our lives. The people in this cult did not join because they idolized jim jones,.they joined because it seemed easier to pretend to be a victim than actually trying and working out solutions to their problems. And once they did that, they got trapped in the systematic evil that he was. They even allowed jim jones to separate them from their own children and brainwash them into hating their own parents. They could not have done that out of their own free will.

the bit about a choice between drinking poison or dying is a bit problematic considering the obvious correlation between the two choices. No, those people killed their own children before they killed themselves. Were they brainwashed? Ummm.... I guess maybe they figured out that things weren't great when the Soviets were killing each other, or the Chinese, or the Cambodians, or the Cubans, or the North Koreans. When you're being forced to die might be a waking moment for even Communists. However, the people in jonestown were avowed communists. When you're being forced to drink poison is a bit too late to consider the ridiculousness of your ideology.

Our government did NOT handle this well. These people deserved better, they were charged for the phone call to get information, they were charged to pick up their relatives, they were charged for the funerals. Many of them didn't have the money for this (hence the reason why cremated remains were found in 2014 in a Dover funeral home). The woman was right, they were not given the respect they deserved as taxpayers. These poor families.

I understand the people’s frustration at 13:51 about wanting the government to return their family members bodies, like they did senator Ryan’s, but truthfully… Leo Ryan’s body was much easier to identify. He was dead on a tarmac with only, like 3 other people dead near him. Their family members, were literally dead and buried under HUNDREDS of other people. At first, rescue teams only thought 400 people were dead (and were hopeful that the rest would be found alive hiding in the jungle), then freaked out upon realizing there were literally layers more of adults and also children, underneath the original 400 that had been counted. Some of those people were so badly decomposed from the elements, and the fact that they had been under the weight of other’s bodies, that they couldn’t be immediately identified.
