You can inspect the rear sprocket when you service / clean the chain, but apparently I've been told the front sprocket wears faster as it takes more of the force. Depends on your bike and how or what sort of riding you do too I suspect, but should be easy enough to remove the cover and inspect the front sprocket. I'm sure some of my followers will be able to explain better and more technically!

Hey, your videos getting better and better (although they where good from the beginning), music, cut, very entertaining and on top of that I have learned what is needed to change the chain on my Himi very soon. Thank you for sharing and have a great weekend.
Roger bling bling 🎆😉 What a lovely feeling it is when you cant test the chain tension with your finger and the finger doesn't get all black and greasy....should always be like that.😇 Grts Danny
Roger is certainly getting some good up grades. I will check to see if they do a kit for my Meteor. Always great when you have mates that will help and give you assistance. Keep up the good work Charlie.
Hi Charlie, always a good idea to change the sprockets when changing the chain, worn sprockets will soon take out a new chain ! I didn't see you apply chain lube to the new chain ? It will soon disperse any lubricant it came packed in, get some lube on it if you want it to last. About 3 years ago I invested in a cheap (about £50) rattle (impact) gun which makes removing sprocket nuts & the likes so easy !
Gold exhaust in a years time to mark the Anniversary of the gold chain, You getting blinged up Roger!!! I had to chuckle when I read about getting the terms wrong haha as long as you d not start calling motor bike seats "chairs" you are fine haha That Chain is awesome!
@@restdayrider Hi Charlie, Have you seen the Lightweight Adventures Festival 14-16 july 20232, 2 nights camping, it's in the Peak District, with speakers from europe, with workshops ,food ,bands .That would be right up your street and a good video too.All the best .
Nice vid as per Charlie, duly noted that you placed a chain "LINK" to Hitchcocks in your description...(see what I did there?..lol) Keep em coming Charlie!
The next vlog, was the best riding I've had to date. I credit that to all the changes, and maybe the weather a bit. I had SO much fun, the bike felt incredible.
Can’t beat a New Chain & Sprocket lol Rodger is looking the part great video Charlie & well done to the lads helping out as I wouldn’t of had a scooby wot to do! Lol👍🏻😂😎
The engine sprocket, being much smaller, wears out twice as fast as the rear sprocket. Correct chain tension is essential to ensure the bearing on the output main shaft is not "loaded". Replacement of that bearing is expensive. Oil the chain with EP80 gear oil which you can apply with a one half inch paint briush.
Very good instructive video for those doing their own maintenance. Last time my chain was changed the workshop asked do I want an X ring instead of O ring, I just stayed with O ring, do any of your mates have any feed back yea or nay on this type.
X-rings are a modern development of the O-ring and give better overall performance. Normally used for high performance bikes, and serious off road…enduro and Moto-cross. For most bikes, a well maintained ‘O’ ring chain should be adequate.
Chug got same chain as Roger:) Hopefully good for many thousands of miles. Keep an eye on clutch and throttle cables as these seem to fail around 15 to 20K miles. Tell me how I know? Tim had fun and throttle cable games in Scotland recently!!
With Proper Maintenance & Lubrication & Cleaning that Gold Chain will last you for many Thousands of Miles I use Parrafin in an Old Spray. Bottle and a Brush to Clean my Chain ..does not Harm the O Rings (bit Smelly) There are Lots of Different advice on U Tube. Fortnine reckons Gear Oil is best for Lubrication
Hiya Charlie great clip yet again thanks for the entertainment..I have noticed you don't ride your meteor much these days do you prefer riding Roger 🤭 x
I was thinking about how nice a bit of bling chain looks, unfortunately my bike doesn't have a chain. I had the thought "maybe I can paint my shaft gold" Ive been giggling to myself ever since.
well done on the new chain and sprockets, have you thought of lube (Now Now Matron!) for the chain, a good dry chain lube (follow the instructions and put on after a ride) or a Scott Oiler. I had one on a ZXR750 H1 back in the day and did 18`000 mls in 18 months in all conditions before i traded it and the chain was still in good condition.👍
@@restdayrider little tip, always put the link in on the rear sprocket, towards the back, the teeth of the sprocket will hold it in position while you push the split link through, saves struggling trying to pull it together, I will shut up now 🫣 🫢

Hello just one question do you ever grease your chain? That said the hard points appear quite easily on the original chains from Royal Enfield I have the same problem with"Schaubi"....despite regular lubrification☹️ Unfortunately here I have no one who takes care of my motorcycle....i am right handed and i have two left hands,I will have to go to the dealer and it will still cost me an arm and a leg 😢 ✌️🇨🇵
Hi Alan. There’s a few parts to a chain, pins, rollers, o-rings, inner links and outer links. The o-rings keep grease sealed between the pins and rollers during manufacture and it should stay there for the life of the chain, if it’s a decent chain. The O-rings also prevent ingress of water to the pins, so they keep the grease in and liquids out. They don’t do anything else. The rollers contact the sprockets and should be greased to prevent wear between those surfaces. You don’t need to grease all the links. It’ll find its way round quite quickly on rotation. The outer and inner links need to rotate against each other, if you don’t clean and lubricate them they can become tight and seize. Some light oil like 3in1 between the links is a very good idea after cleaning. I use de-greasing spray to clean between the links and Gunk with a decent brush for general de-greasing of the rollers. You can’t beat a 5 litre can of Gunk in your garage (careful of that stuff on a tarmac drive though). And you need to check the chain for adjustment after each clean. I usually like about 1/4” to 3/8” inch of slack on the return side, the bottom middle section. Finally a chain-oilers are a good idea if you want to extend your chain life but find it difficult to clean regularly or if you do long road trips, but they don’t replace regular maintenance.
Always amazed me how different it felt with new chain and sprockets. That said my hips got too painful to get my leg over last summer, the bike, the bike, 😀 so I switched to a Honda Maxi scooter and bye bye chains, just a new belt every 15k. 🙂
Ridden scooters ( modern ones) for a while and compared to removing the chain off my honda 125s every half term to soak in diesel, a 12k belt is heaven. I do my own too. If u buy an impact wrench (mines battery) it will fetch nuts off clutch and variator. When you have a new belt feels faster😁
How do you know when to replace the sprocket? Or is it the case of you might aswell replace it if your going to replace the chain?
You can inspect the rear sprocket when you service / clean the chain, but apparently I've been told the front sprocket wears faster as it takes more of the force. Depends on your bike and how or what sort of riding you do too I suspect, but should be easy enough to remove the cover and inspect the front sprocket. I'm sure some of my followers will be able to explain better and more technically!
Look for damaged teeth, or worn teeth if you fit a chain to worn socket the chain will not last as long, the old sprockets will damage new chains...
The music mix on all of your videos is absolutely fantastic in my ears. And the sound quality 🎉
