@@NFawc It's a representative democracy. Parliament isn't supposed to bend to every will of the public, it's supposed to act in the best interest of the public, even if that sometimes means to ignore the views of the constituents in the case that fulfilling those wishes might do more harm than good. That's the whole reason why parliaments exists and not everything is done by referendums: the idea that the public can't be trusted to make informed decisions concerning the present and the future all the time and therefore has to be represented by people whose job it is to familiarize themselves with difficult topics and make informed decisions. It's not undemocratic (just as referendums are not undemocratic), there's just a conflict between different flavours of democracy if direct and representative forms of decision making yield different results. It's ugly, but neither side can claim that the other doesn't to their job.

    Bercow going savage :D
And staying so british polite and gentlemanlike while going savage towards his former party, this always amazes me about the British Parliament in these days.
I've read that the Tories, despite tradition, announced to let a candidate run vs Bercow in his constituency, I hope Labour and the other Opposition Parties now support Bercow openly, he deserves to stay in Parliament as one of the reasonable people in this parliament and for just being an awesome speaker!
Btw, do you plan to open channels to cover other important european countries or the EU Parliament?
For instance, Ursula von der Leyen, the new President of the EU Commission, is rumoured to appoint an Irish Commissar for the position of the Trade Commissar, making this highly political in regard to the Brexit Affair, since Ireland will be the EU-Nation most affected and maybe hurt by Brexit besides the UK.

As we learned here in Canada, under Harper, once they've opened the can of worms that is prorogation, they won't shy away from using it any other time they aren't getting their way. It's essentially the parliamentary version of pulling a Cartman - "Screw you guys, I'm going home."

    • @mareksicinski3726

but how does prorogation work in other situations?

    • @taragwendolyn
      @taragwendolyn 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@@mareksicinski3726 Flippant answer? Poorly. More seriously, at its core prorogation just means suspending parliament for any reason. Whether that's good or bad depends on the person using it, and the reason. As has been noted here and elsewhere, prorogation is a normal part of the parliamentary process. It happens during changes of governments, it happens for the summer & Christmas breaks, and the removal of it as a part of the parliamentary process would break the system. The issue is that there's mechanisms that can be abused - Johnson tried (and may still try) using it to avoid debate on Brexit, which could be seen as contempt for the parliamentary system. Similarly, our former PM Harper, here in Canada, made extensive use of it to shut down debate on unpopular legislation, and here in Ontario specifically, our provincial parliament is currently suspended until after the upcoming federal election - some are saying it's because of how deeply unpopular the provincial government is, and because allowing them to continue on their current course would hurt the chances of their federal counterparts. As I said - how it's read and what it's used for depends entirely on the person using it and the reason for their using it.

You are supporting executive fiat to ignore the legislative body because he doesn't like what they are doing. That's not really democratic. I know where your argument that you are will come from since you see this as a part of enforcing brexit which was voted for by the majority. But, the vote didn't set a time table or say that it would be a no deal brexit. Thus delaying and trying to get a deal aren't undemocratic (they could be if another vote is held, which shouldn't happen in my opinion as it would further complicate things as well as due to first past the post could have undemocratic results (say 20%hard brexit, 39% deal brexit and 41% remain causing a remain)). However, using executive power to get what one wants isn't democratic, it isn't wrong inherently, but it isn't democratic.

As such it's overly simple and thus doesn't explicitly give a timeline or a requirement to have or not have a deal and people can and should debate that, which is what parliament is for. I'm not saying Boris is a traitor or undemocratic, he isnt, what I am saying is that doing this particular move is undemocratic, that doesn't make it wrong but it does make your assertion that in this case you are defending democracy dodgy.

Being President doesn't make you immune from the law, just temporarily immune. That's why president Ford pardoned Nixon after watergate (he could still have been charged with crimes unless he had been pardoned).
In the UK, the prime minister is not technically the head of state. The Queen is. Only the Queen is immune from criminal and civil prosecution The courts act in her name. As such, there is not much stopping the police from arresting any MP for comitting a crime. If it was ANY other PM, I would be here writing an essay about how in international politics you somnetimes can't be honest with your own parliament, when it's broadcast live for the world to see and how Johnson is right to withhold his plans for the negotiations with the EU, because otherwise the EU would know of his plans in advance which might weaken his position.
HOWEVER, this is BoJo we're talking about. This guy wouldn't know a plan from the drawing of a dickbutt when shown side-by-side. And if you don't believe me in that - which you're perfectly welcome to do - I would kindly draw your attention to all those who defected or were thrown out. If the PM really had a good plan, that he just couldn't share for diplomatic reasons, he wouldn't be abandoned by everyone coming near him. On the contrary, we would have ministers and party leaders emploring the public to "please trust the PM", maybe they would even use the "usual channels" (i.e. backroom talks) to inform the opposition of the plan without the public knowing. But the fact that not only this isn't happening, but in fact quite the opposite - ministers left, right and center argue against their own PM and abandon ship - is as clear a sign as possible that the current PM has no clue whatsoever on how to get a different deal from the EU.
[Adding to this is, ofcourse, the fact that the EU holds her ground firmly. From day one they said "we have a deal. take it or leave it." and never waivered. But what other nations think has rarely been a factor in UK politics, so that's just a sidenote...]

And you can't have either or both of them without regulations from the EU level because the single market and customs union is a EU-wide thing and without EU wide regulations loopholes begin to appear. They are willing to let UK cut itself off and already prepare for that, but they will never agree on market or customs without EU wide rules. @@Tespri By having democratically elected MPs executed by a monarch for going against a policy, you would destroy democracy as we know it in Britain. A good portion of Britain would not stand for that, which is the civil war I was referring to.
The referendum was never binding - people knew that from the beginning. Furthermore, the "leave" option included both leaving with a deal and leaving without one, and people who wanted to leave with one by no means want to leave without, and possibly even want to stay if the options are no deal or staying - and since "leave" only barely won, the largest of the three groups is for remaining.
And lastly, the have been TWO general elections since the referendum and neither parliament has been able to get a majority for any of the three options, so to state or even imply leaving without a deal is the will of the common people is either ignorant or dishonest to the nth degree.
The UK is not strictly a democracy, but it is for all intentes and purposes a representational one, and is the better for it.
And if you truely think the EU is facistic, you are lost. Nothing I say can or will convince you, since your delusion already runs so deep. Not that I am surprised, considering you advocated for executing democratically elected representatives for the crime of holding to their beliefs and principles.
Just ponder this: Ever matter the EU put into law, the UK had the power to veto. NOTHING the EU did that concerned the UK was done without its consent. Truely, the whip lashes hard.

Elected MPs can't override the referendum made by the people. You're basically treating MP elections as same as referendum, which it was not. Lot of those MP's even gave promise to honor the brexit and ended up breaking it.
"executed by a monarch for going against a policy, you would destroy democracy as we know it in Britain. "
No it wouldn't. It would free the country from traitors. MP's are suppose to abide by the will of the people and secure the country. All of those MP's you are worshiping literally did the opposite. They ignored referendum and basically made it impossible to leave EU. AKA THEY SOLD THEIR COUNTRY. They are treasonous by the very definition. Not only that but their constant hindrance of the negotiation process ensured that the people of UK would suffer.
"A good portion of Britain would not stand for that, which is the civil war I was referring to."
Actually according to polls they would. Most people don't want to be part of your silly project of soviet 2.0.
      "The referendum was never binding"
It was and every MP stand and vowed to honor it.
"And lastly, the have been TWO general elections since the referendum and neither parliament has been able to get a majority for any of the three options, so to state or even imply leaving without a deal is the will of the common people is either ignorant or dishonest to the nth degree."
Again, constant sabotage from the MP's not to mention that Theresa was remainer. What do you expect will happen when remainer is let to decide over the issue? Clean solution?
"The UK is not strictly a democracy, but it is for all intentes and purposes a representational one, and is the better for it."
If it's it's interest to represent the people, then they should honor the referendum and leave the EU ON SPOT.
"and if you truely think the EU is facistic, you are lost."
Only one lost is you, for not understanding what fascism is and how EU functions.
"Nothing I say can or will convince you, since your delusion already runs so deep. "
IS it though? I'm talking with ideologue who thinks that HIGHLY centralized totalitarian regime that is suppressing freedom's of the people who live under their regime is a heaven.
EU fits to the bill of fascism perfectly.
"Ever matter the EU put into law, the UK had the power to veto. NOTHING the EU did that concerned the UK was done without its consent."
UK doesn't have dictatorial power in EU. Nor having one would even make it a good thing.
You clearly fail to even understand how EU works. UK can't just veto everything it wants, it can try. However the influence and power in EU is decided purely by population of the country.
And again... Your arguments can be used for "how great and good soviets were". I doubt you even know how their system worked.

It goes back to Charles I when the monarch entered the chamber and arrested MPs , most notably Cromwell. Long story short, the tradition since then is for the monarch to not enter the House of Commons and send a Black Rod. Black Rod "tries" to enter the chamber and is "blocked" by shutting the door who then knocks on the door and then requires the MPs to go the House of Lords. It's a bit of pomp and show but rooted in history and tradition.
