    I’m a guy, but took typing class in junior high in, say 1975. Great class to meet girls since I was one of the few guys who would take typing. When I went into the Army in the 80’s knowing how to type was invaluable. This was years before kids learned “keyboarding” for their PCs. Anyway, in my class I’m pretty sure it was “Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their Country” we typed over and over. And, “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” as the sentences to cover every letter in the alphabet.

    • @martinfinn1550
      @martinfinn1550 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I did the same thing in the late 1970's and if my memory serves me "The quick brown fox" thing covered every letter in the alphabet and the" Now is the time" thing covered exactly one sentence of typing on a typewriter page before pressing the carriage return to start a new line.

      Since my only experience with typewriters was using my dad's in the 90's, I have 1 question to both of you. Does the ink roll rolls when pressing the spacebar? I asked because if I remembered correctly, my dad's typewriter (I think its an Olivetti) doesn't roll the ink roll when pressing the spacebar but it seem the ink roll that Columbo used in the video, the spaces are shown in the ink roll, which seem to be a waste of good ink.

    • @skiller189x4
      @skiller189x4 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@13gan As I recall from changing the ink rolls back then, the ribbons would have letter indentations consistently along the ribbon, in other words with no spaces or gaps. You’re right, if the machine had let spaces go on the ribbon from the space bar that would have been a terrible waste. One interesting thing- in the typewriters I used one could “rewind” the ribbon spools and there was usually enough ink to use again. In that case, being typed over a second time, it would have been impossible for Colombo to have read any coherent message off the ribbon.

    No perfect murder. Just very convincing alibis. Which might never be discovered to be false if the criminal is smart enough and the investigators are either not smart enough to think of it, or too lazy/corrupt to break.
    The more serious the crime is considered the greater the resources that can be thrown at it.

    Great scene from an episode of "Columbo", but the absurdity of Santini burning the copy of the letter is that even if Santini was not bright enough to realize that Columbo would have made numerous copies of the original letter before confronting Santini about his guilt, Santini's burning the copy of the letter achieved nothing because he burned the letter in front of numerous police officer witnesses who could testify in court to his act of burning the letter!

    Even if Columbo had not found the typewriter ribbon the magician would still be the main suspect in his employers murder. He had broken into his employers office in the past by lock picking his door. So his employer took the precaution of installing a tough security lock when counting the takings. Only one person at the club had the lock picking skills to open the door and shoot him, and that was the magician. So like in the chess episode where Columbo says the murderer had to be a deaf man, in this case the murderer had to be an expert lock picker.

    • @francoisona

      'You had the skills to do it' wouldn't take you anywhere in a court of law

    • @martinfinn1550
      @martinfinn1550 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@francoisonaIt would be considered strong circumstantial evidence. A good prosecutor would point out to a court who else would have the lockpicking skills to open the specially hardened lock, and was directly connected with the club. There was no evidence of some intruder breaking in from outside the club. By itself it probably wouldn't convict him, but added together with all the other clues Columbo uncovered it would. People have been convicted of murder based on mostly circumstantial evidence before. Besides he essentially confesses at the end when he says "And I thought I had performed the perfect murder".

    Why would the ribbon have had spaces between the words? Hitting the space bar would have moved the carriage but wouldn't have resulted in a space on the ribbon. You wouldn't have to be Perry Mason to get that bit of evidence tossed out.

    • @johnfinnegan8474
      @johnfinnegan8474 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its just a TV show so it might be just a scriptwriters error. Even if there were no spaces between the letters, they would still spell out the accusation he was a Nazi, which was the last thing he typed out before he was murdered. Between that and the fact the victim got a high security lock for his door which only a lockpick expert could open would also point to the magician as he was an expert lockpicker.
