Something I love about Nimona is that they don't give the shapeshifter a "true form". This is something a lot of depictions of shapeshifters get wrong. The longer the movie goes on the clearer this becomes. At first you think the form she was introduced in is her "true" form. Later, when she wants to comfort the little girl and she turns into a child herself, we assume thats her "true" form, this idea seems even more true when she transforms into a little girl again when she feels betrayed and vulnerable. But only when we see her backstory (not the one in the train, the real one) we see that her "little girl" form was only made later in Nimona's life. And maybe her "true" form is the pink mist she turns into between transformations. Because a true shapeshifter has no true form. A true shapeshifter is formless. So many depictions of shapeshifters get this wrong and I'm so glad Nimona got this right
I don't think there's any way to portray a shapeshifter _wrong,_ per se, this version just fits the narrative better. We don't know what Nimona _is,_ besides themself, as she can take on any form she desires. So, it makes sense for her to not really have a true form- though in my mind, I viewed the giant shadow-beast form as somewhat like her true one; when she is in the form of Ambrosius, she gets stabbed clean through and is perfectly fine, but as the shadow-beast she is very clearly capable of being hurt. Her phoenix form, however, seems to match simply her magic, like the raw energy of it, so perhaps that is her 'true form'?. Still, the film makes an excellent point illustrating that Nimona doesn't have a true form, just one she uses more frequently to blend in, something that might have changed after the ending. (Like how she would talk to Gloreth in various forms.) With other shapeshifters, they were generally _born,_ unlike Nimona who is of unknown origin to us, so it makes sense that those shapeshifters have a true form; their shapeshifting is an ability, not a trait that defines them like Nimona. Take away the shapeshifting of a character of known origin, and they're still themself. Take away the shapeshifting of NImona, and it's not Nimona at all. Shapeshifting is a part of their identity, not just a power they use from time to time. It's everything she is.
@@ardeni8385 Thanks for putting it into better words! I don't think her monster form is her true form, it's more of a representation of her self-hatred and rage. It's a form she took when she was extremely emotional. I feel like her Phoenix form is closest to her true form, as it looks the most similar to the pink mist in between her transformations. It's also right after Ballister says he accepts her for who she is, so it would make sense she would have a good self image. Her monster form is also mist-like, because it's emotional and emotions don't have a solid shape
I am so happy that others "saw" Nimona and got this movie completed. It was a once in a lifetime moment for me to see it on screen....and yes, I would love to see it nominated for an Oscar. The message Nimona send should be honored with a nomination.
The backstory itself is an epic . 6 years to make . Female producers . A diverse female lead character with a large range of emotions , powerful & sensitive, that shape shifts ? I'm saving it to watch with my daughter. I'm 50 she's 19 . I'm an artist. I'M ALL IN ! If I had t stumbled on the 'making of ' I would have missed out on so much hard work from so many peoplen through an Odyssey of Homeric proportions that I'm genuinely very excited to savour it frame by frame , emotion by emotion , give value to the soundtrack & respect to the whole project. I love it before I've enjoyed it . Congratulations to all involved & thank you very much for such a gift to humanity . Imagine how much I'll have to say once I've sensed it with all my 6 senses & critically analyzed it 😂❤️🙏🔥💯💥☄️
I love the explanation of emotion behind the film. As an aspiring animator and writer this frank and open exploration of what drives our main characters and how it influenced the animation of the film makes me beyond happy.
This movie is just so meaningful to me as a trans youth, mental health is definitely not talked about enough in media especially for how serious it is, and it is so refreshing to see a movie/story perfectly and respectfully handle the sensitive topic. This movie will stay in my heart forever no matter what, so truly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you to the nimona team for sticking through the hardest of times to complete this masterpiece. This is honestly the first movie in which no matter how many times I’ve seen it, I’ll always cry through it, not in a bad way at all, but through how connected this character feels, I truly see myself in this movie which is just so comforting. So again thank you Nimona team, thank you ND Stevenson❤️❤️
I loved this. It speaks to my heart. A belief I will take to my grave is that the best stories in animation are the emotional ones. I have always loved the "quieter" scenes in animated films where characters just sit down and discuss their problems, and I especially like it when an animated story can be told without dialogue as in "Reversal of the Heart," for example.
Ted Ty definitely deserves a huge applause, I mean this is a guy who formally worked at Disney, Dreamworks, and even L'Atelier studios. He's got a bright future within double negative studios 😁😁😁
This movie was unlike anything i had seen from an animated kids movie. It completely blew me away and i think its entirely due to its emotional maturity. Even when it plays into cliches, even when you know what's going to happen next, it still manages to disappoint you, because of how the characters react and how they're supposed to. Also ballister is my favourite character in the entire world, he's too precious
I love how they throw the "Beetlejuice element in there" When talking about Nimona changing to different animals. It's awesome to know professionals are being inspired by the same thing I am. That really matters to me.
Last year, Puss in Boots:The Last Wish was a film I could have very safely called a contender for Best Animated Film, even when it was competing against a del Toro movie. Now, Nimona makes me feel the very same way. A Spider-Verse movie is hard to top, and going against a Studio Ghibli movie on top of that is even harder, but if anything could be the one to top them both, it would be Nimona
Beautiful! I wish I create my animated Nickelodeon original movie Mariala Avalos: Teenage Bruja it's about a teenage girl named Mariala Avalos who discovered that she cames from a long line of witches plus it's from her mother's side. Mariala decided to save her town from the ghosts of incompetent burglars with the help of her ghostly aunt Lucia Lopez and a cursed talking parrot Joseph Vega
Talk about karma......Nimona have 9 nominations at the ANNIE awards, just the most important animation awards in US...........while other 2 films of certain company that happen to cancel Nimona, got jack nothing for their efforts, Karma is a B.
I love when he keeps asking her to be herself and she keeps saying “I don’t understand the question..” lol Just trying to be a bit of a jerk instead of outright saying what she wants to say. “This is me.” or “I’m always myself” would be easier, but she just likes messing with him and that’s always funny.
I will forever be sad about the animation changing her hairstyle from her comic hair. I feel like it’s such an important visual indicator of who she is and represents her personality perfectly. It was spunky and weird and completely unique to her. Also, her constantly changing the color - a symbolism to her powers as well as her emotional rollercoasters.
If Nimona doesn’t get an Oscar nomination, I’ll be upset.
Me too.
I am UPSET!!! ThE OSCARS ARE a SCaM!!!😭😭😭
It's a good movie, but it's not worthy.
@@sevith5277Unless if Disney actually bought Oscars so that their movies will eventually win
but its not good

Lmao! Get wrong. Oh sorry movies dont consult the anicent texts on historical facts about how shapshifters truly need to be portrayed!

“The sincerity of Miyazaki” genuinely has me emotional. Especially since he just came out of retirement and dropped another fantastic movie.
Never in a million years would I watch Nimona hadn't it been for this beautiful introduction urging me to find it right now ❤
This was such a beautiful film and the animation was truly gorgeous
I pray netflix makes more movies like Nimona
Nimona deserves the Oscar for best animated picture, and Spider-Man Across The Spiderverse deserves the Oscar for best picture.

This movie was absolutely fantastic and holds a big place in my heart. They did so well on this movie and I'm so happy it survived!

This is what Disney wanted to achieve with Wish but failed miserably
Probably my favorite movie from last year. I hope so much that Nimona will get a physical release so I can add it to my collection. 😍
I’m so glad they put in a lot of effort into their emotions because that really hit me. It’s just beautiful, this movie is extremely beautiful
They could make a miniseries of what Nimona's life was like before she met Ballester. I would like at least

Nimona was one of the best animated movies I've ever seen ❤
Love Nimona so much due to the film’s history I appreciate
We need more movies like this. ❤
As soon as I heard "Bill" and "Watterson," I loved this movie 10 times more
Literally obsessed with everything about the book/movie.
Nimona is such a great movie I love it!
If we didn’t know about animation we wouldn’t be even there for a movie
Best movie EVER
Nimona was one of the most amazing movies of the last many years, I really hope we get to see more of the universe.

I don't wanna watch gay film...
that's your problem
Then don't watch it.
Cry somewhere else then
That isn’t all that it is; it’s your fault if you miss out on a creative story just cause it has gay people.
Also it rarely has any importance in the story, don’t see why you couldn’t watch it.
