    There are so many things that we forgot to mention in this video. However, we did start a great TOPIC and article in the Forum. It has a LIST of all the things YOU need to know and ask before renting. Make sure to go to the forum and read that article here:

    I am moving to Costa Rica in 85 days. I will spend my first 30 days in PachaMama on the Nicoya Peninsula from there I would like to get a small furnished one bedroom in Atenas. I will not have transportation and like public transportation. I have a SS check of $2100.00 a month. I have been doing my research for months. I really would like to meet you two. You have been a big help. Thank you

    Hola. I'm coming to Playas del Coco, Guanacaste in February to find a place to live. Moving there by August!Your video about renting a home gave me a lot of information about things to look for and be careful of when renting a home in Costa Rica. Thank you for the video and all the other informative videos that you have made. Keep the videos coming. It makes the move a lot easier with all the information. I appreciate it. Pura Vida

    Wow, thank you guys for such useful information! I recently commited(over e-mail) to a 3 month rental- $560 a month plus $200 deposit for a home near San Isidro de el General. I haven’t paid anything yet. But after watching your videos, I have a totally new perspective and plan for when I travel to CR which will be next week. The issue I’m facing is telling the owner that I don’t want to stay anymore. We’ve been conversing for weeks, he’s arranged for me a less expensive private taxi from the airport and has been very kind. I could stay for only a month but that may put my deposit in jeopardy. It was foolish to commit but I hopped on the first nice place I saw without even seeing it. Now I just want to rent a cheap place for 2-3 weeks, meet locals and shop around. Any advice on this?
    Thanks!
    -Tyler

      Hey Tyler, I am so glad you watched this video! The video that is scheduled to come out on Sunday will be very eye opening as well !!!
      Here is what I would do if I were you....simply email back to whomever you recently committed too, tell him you are sorry, but unforeseen things have happened in your life which has changed your plans for Costa Rica and unfortunately, you will not need the rental you had hoped to rent. Thank him for all his help and let him know if anything changes, you will contact him immediately!) . (all this is true, no more detail)
      Since you have NOT signed anything (even if you had) you are NOT obligated to anything since you are not in Costa Rica and anything legal must be done in the presence of an attorney. (keep in mind, I am NOT an attorney and can NOT give you legal advice, but this is what I would do, knowing the situation)
      After the above, begin searching for an AirBnB and stay there for a few days and begin searching for a gerat, cheap rental that will serve your purpose until you find the perfect place to rent.

    Hey. What s the best way to pay a landlord? Do they want cash?
    Btw, dont they leave a water and electric bill with the account number on it? Who pays a utility bill without looking at the bill?

    • @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica
      @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They always want cash...but NEVER PAY in cash! ALWAYS pay in the local currency (colones). If you pay in dollars, then you are cheating yourself every time you pay for anything with USD and never pay the utility bill without seeing it or going and paying it yourself. If you trust them to say it is $30 for your water....You will eventually get cheated. So, Pay the bill yourself using the account number and name by going to the store and paying it.

    • @blueagle-di6is
      @blueagle-di6is 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica thanks for your prompt response and love your videos. However, you still haven't answered how to pay a landlord. For example, in the USA you can pay your landlord with a personal check, money order etc.
      The other thing is dont the utility companies mail or leave a paper bill at your door ? Or can you see the bill on line? Youre making it sound like every month you go down to one of these little stores with the account number and the clerk looks into a computer and informs you of how much you have to pay.
      TY

    • @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica
      @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@blueagle-di6is Thanks for clarifying your question. The most common way to pay a Landlord (if NOT paying in person) is to deposit the money into their bank account.
      It is common to either go into the bank with the Landlords name and account number and deposit the rent, or you can do it online, IF YOU OPEN a bank account,.
      As for paying the utility company...I've been in Costa Rica for 8 years...I've NEVER seen a paper bill or received any mail from a utility company. (Remember Costa Rica is a 3rd world country and behind on anything you feel is normal) YES, every time I've paid the utility bill, I've either gone into a little store, gave them the account number, HAD TO TRUST THEM, on the amount to pay, Paid them and ALWAYS ask for a receipt. OR, go into the utility department building, paid it there, or pay it online. AND it is important to KNOW....Most utility companies do NOT have a grace period. The phone company cut off my phone 1 day after it was NOT paid. My credit card was on file and was always on Auto-Pay. But the credit card had expired and I did NOT get a notice that said...HEY, your card is going to expire, please update it. No, Costa Rica just shut down my phone ONE day after the due date.
      I hope that info helps.

    You mentioned to have a Tico/Tica call the owner and ask about the rental but don't have them ask about the cost of the rental up front; otherwise, they will KNOW that a gringo is behind the call. But then you said after you find out the cost of the place you're going to visit the place. At what point do we ask about the cost of the rental, and I'm assuming we'll want our Tico/Tica friend to ask, correct? When you do visit and they find out your a gringo, do they try to increase the cost of the rental and how do you deal with that, if so?

    • @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica
      @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Good Question.
      After you get the real price from the Tico....let's say he found out that the place was 100,000 colones which is about $200.
      Then you can either go by yourself or go with the Tico and look at the place. If you go with the Tico...then the tico will say, I called to see the place. If you go alone, you can say, my Tico friend called you and made this appointment for me. He said you told him it was $200 for rent. Is that correct?.
      After letting them KNOW, that they have already told your friend the actual price...they will NOT go up on the price when they see a gringo has come. They will know they have been busted...LOL. and they will rent the place for the right price.

    • @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica
      @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can't give you an personal experience on Nicaragua, but here are my thoughts. A LOT, and I mean a LOT of Nicaraguans are leaving their country and trying to sneak into Costa Rica. With that many of THEIR OWN people trying to ESCAPE Nicaragua, that is NOT a good indicator that I would want to be there. Combine that with the constant civil unrest that goes on there and all the corrupt things that happen with Nicaraguan Gorillas... I would NOT advise anyone go there. To big a risk in my opinion. I was a bit leary on stamping out into that country the ONE time that I decided to stamp out in Nicaragua because we were close to that border.
