    I am a 73 year old cleaning out my craft closet. I found a Sizzlits I bought probably greater than 30 years ago. I went on TH-cam to remind myself how to make the die cuts. I found your video and now I can show my grand daughter how to make great shapes. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge.

    Leslie- I'm so GRATEFUL to have run across your video. I have a Big Shot and still need to learn how to use it- but today picked up one of these little red machines because they look easier to use. Now I will be on the lookout for cutting dies. I so appreciate you taking the time out to teach us how to use it.

    Love the demo awesome video, I just purchased one at a yard sale and I already have the big shot but on the red dies that crease stuff the big shot has to much pressure and was cutting through it totally. So I'm glad you did this video. I sure do miss ya, rest in peace!

      can you use the newer die cuts with this, I saw one recently at Good Will for $5. Am currently using a Pasta Machine and a cut to size $ Store plastic cutting board and rolling it through, currently, but the embossing folders buckle. Plus the cutting board will eventually need replacing probably. Only have a few of each I got from Aliexpress, as I am new at this, but enjoying myself. Not sure if all of the parts that are needed are at the Good Will and it may be gone by now, but thought I'd ask. Hope to hear from you before I go again...

    I was just given this original machine and many dies to go with! I'm a Diamond Press user and I have a Cricut Joy, but I think I'm going to love to use this machine as it has many dies that I don't have and I can use a lot of bigger things than I currently can. I'm going to get my husband to cut some chipboard that will work with the size of the cutting pad! You have helped me so much! Have a blessed day!

    My Big Shot broke. Until Stampin' Up! comes out with their new cut and emboss machine in a few months, I don't want to spend over $100 on a new Big Shot, so I ordered the little Side Kick for $27. However, I couldn't figure out how to emboss a card front with it, since it's so small. I would never have thought of bringing out this old guy. Thanks so much!

    Leslie, great video as always. I bought one of these with some of the yellow, green and red dies at a yard sale and never could get it to cut for me all the way. Now I know to try again. I know what I was doing wrong. I am excited to try it again. Once again, I absolutely love your videos. They are so helpful to me. You explain everything so that it is easily understandable and are always such a joy to watch. I eagerly look forward to each new video.

      +Karen Burks Thank you, Karen, for your kind comment. Woo Hoo! I am beyond thrilled to learn that my video has helped you to understand your yard sale purchase. :D The Original Sizzix takes a little bit of getting used to. Especially with the wafer thin dies and the Spellbinders. It is all about the "shimming". Once you figure that out then the mystery of the Original Sizzix machine will be gone forever :D. Go...explore, have fun, experiment....most of all have FUN!

    Thank you so much. I used to work at a couple different churches and had access to massive, industrial die cutting machines and miss the fun I used to have with them. I am now a school but driver and want to decorate my bus.

    Good job, Leslie. I am also and "old" die cutter and have all the machines. What I like about the original Sizzix die cutting machine and I won't get rid of it is the fact that you don't have to crank it. Sometimes, my wrists argue with me with the constant rotating (if that makes sense). Pulling the handle down alleviates that. Hugs to you.

      Hi Leslie, a fantastic video, you cannot beat the old tools, it's solid indestructible, and a very adaptable machine why by another at £70 a time sometimes more. I have had my original machine longer than you and I swear by it.
      You have at last shown me how to use the black Sizzix block, can' t think of the name just now. I didn't realise it was magnetic!!! It was not in the instructions and I have puzzled for hours trying to work how it fitted and gave up. Because I have watched this video I can now use the host of freebie dies I have given with magazines. I wasn't prepared to spend all that extra money for a bigger machine. Us oldies do not have the money to keep changing machines just because a new style die has come out.

    Thank you for your demonstration of so many dies with this older Sizzix machine today. I was looking just for this. I invested the last year plus on numerous of the sizzix alphabets that come in those long narrow boxes that worked like your tag you made today. So I debated buying one of these machines because I have 6 embossing machines of various brands and sizes two electric even and really hard to convince myself of yet another. BUT turns out some of my alphabet dies were warping severely going through any of my machines after a few times and without a lot of pressure and no shims or super thin paper stock shims even. SO I wasn't familiar with this machine but had picked up that these dies worked with a machine that pressed down with even pressure on them not ROLLED them through rollers. And so rather than see my wonderful alphabet dies ruined I went to TH-cam and yours was the first up on my search. Perfect timing. I already ordered the least expensive but like new red machine with a pad for under 50 today. And then ordered a NEW converter adapter for just under 14 to go with it. I can also order a new pad for 21. I thought I'd wait until I see the machine with pad to see if it needs a new one or it's still good. In the photo it didn't show any wear or use but maybe on the other side it is or they also had it inserted under the machine part way so you could not see entirely the top of the white pad. I didn't want to spend so much but another set I was interested in that included yet two more full sets of alphabets I didn't have but didnt need was a great value but was missing the converter despite the box showing the converter was originally included with that set. So in the end I made the best choice for myself and I plan to just use this machine for the alphabets I enjoy cutting. And no warping. Now where will I store this big ole red monster? Right I just cleared a drawer for storing my newest hobby freshies for the molds...I think that drawer will be perfect for the red machine as it's deep in length and depth both. And the freshies...I've only got two dies to date so they will be able to find a better spot...and I moved the scents to a new drawer in the basement to I wasn't smelling their light air leakage and what better place but to keep the freshies scents and molds and yes aroma pellets all in one big drawer together. It's a plan. Love you share your older equipment with us newbies. (OK I'm now into my 70's...but new to the die cutting/embossing world. And explains how I ended up with so many different machines too. PS I don't like my electric machines. I have arthritis in my wrists and a few fingers so thought that was the way to go. In the end I prefer the hand crank it. Also bought a BIG machine and decided needed a small one then a smaller yet one for traveling. OH MY GOSH there went a big hunk of that stimulus money. Thank you Uncle Sam !!!! I so needed a new interest or two or three to keep my mind off the world virus troubles. Now I need more to keep my mind off the world Ukraine Blues. I'm planning on making sunflower freshies in yellow/golds and cyan blues by the way in honor of those brave peace loving people. No I do not sell usually items I make...I do gift a lot. I think sometimes folks go OH NO HIDE she's coming with who knows what to share.....LOL. Keep crafting ladies and gents.....stay safe too!

    This is a wonderful video. I just got an original Sizzix machine and four dies for $2.00 (not a typo) at a thrift store 2 days ago. Two months ago I got an entire rolling case of the smaller Sizzix dies which is probably worth hundreds of dollars for only $36.00 at a thrift store. My husband is actually the one that spotted them first. He's always watching out for crafting supplies for me. This is the first time using one. Your information was so helpful. Thank you.

    This video popped up and it's been years since I've used that Sizzix but still have it and the smaller thinner dies. Now I'm inspired to dig this one out. I wondered if the thinner dies could be used because sometimes I'm not as happy with the Big Shot as I should be. It was definitely calibrated wrong for the thinnest dies. Thank you for this video.

    I've found 3 Sidekicks at Value Village over the years for $2.99 ea. My hubby found the original "Big Red" there last year but it didn't have the cutting plate or converter. I found the cutting plate a couple of months ago. Today he found another machine WITH the converter for $6.99 (minus 20%). The converter alone is listed for $30 on ebay. The machine alone is $25 + $24-$38 for shipping. Your video is very thorough & totally helpful.

    Hi Leslie,
    Good demo and thank you for such a thorough demo to help people buying the original Sissix at garage sales or boot fairs as we call them in the UK
    I still have the red, yellow and green sissix dies which work well with my eBosser. They are great for leather and thick materials. Like you I have had many different die cutters over the years, the original red sissix, the purple wizard which was very light weight but noisy when you cranked it, my faithful cuttlebone, the eBosser which was reintroduced as the cut n’boss and have recently bought the Snap as my Cuttlebug was getting inconsistent. I have just been using the curved rectangle dies you showed, with my Snap for the vintage themed Christmas cards I am making samples of.

    Just came across your video which is great to see Old Sizzix Red being used. When cutting the thin wafer-thin dies (like the hinge die you cut), make sure the card stock and the cutting edge of the die are down--facing the cutting plate. If a shim is required, put it on top,of the die. The reason for this is to avoid the die being pressed against the steel adapter, which is not good for the die and will scratch and mark the adapter. Sent to you from The Voice of (bad) Experience.

    It always come to you in the middle of the night, using the shims, will it work for the spellbinders and the bigshot, I always have trouble with the majestic dies not cutting on each end, great video.

    • @messageinafold
      @messageinafold  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Cheryl Ogilvy Cheryl, I always have trouble with the Spellbinder dies on my Big Shot. I can get them to cut but I am not very successful with getting the embossed edges that are the best feature of those dies. You may have to fiddle with your shimming of the Majestic dies on your Big Shot. Try turning them over so the cutting edges are against the hard surface of the platform. Also, I've had to purchase new acrylic plates for my Big Shot because my old ones are so warped and out of shape.

    • @cherylscolourjam
      @cherylscolourjam 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Leslie, I used to use a metal shim with my normal bigshot platform, with the magnetic platform can't use it. Too thick, really warps the plates. I don't use the embossing mats found they were more of a nuisance. So I might have to use some card stock in my stack to cut it. Catch next time

    Hi! I just found this old one in a thrift shop where I live in Stockholm. It was hard to find information on what is needed and what I can do with it can do. Took a lot of time googling - but then I found your video which is what I needed!
    I wonder, is the converter only there to adjust the height or is it something special to it? Could it work with anything else that is hard enough?
    Thanks

    • @messageinafold
      @messageinafold  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Asa, for taking the time to watch my video and leave your great comment. The converter plate is necessary to use on the thin dies. Since Sizzix doesn't make that piece any longer I don't know what you can use instead. Whatever you use will need to be very sturdy to take the pressure necessary to cut all of the thin dies. Wafer type, the new thin dies, and any of the thin steel ruled dies. Maybe a good piece of hard wood that can go under the pressure head. I'm sorry that I am not of much help to you. I appreciate you taking the time to let me know of your newest acquisition in your creative space.

    Hello again Leslie, well you replied to my post but when I came back here to write another msg mine is not showing up. Not sure what TH-cam did with it. I'm the one that bought the Sizzex for my niece. Well she came up this weekend and was so disappointed because we could not get it to cut the Heartfelt die she had bought. She did use my BigShot and cut several out. But if you still have your Sizzex and just so happen to have one or a big long thin die. We had no problem using a small die like you show here. We really needed an extra plexiglass piece to make a sandwich. Each time we tired it cut on front part going through the machine and nothing else. We left die in machine and pushed handle down like 5 times in each spot. We put extra shims still only cut that front area. I was thinking hmmm maybe the die was a lemon. So I used it in my Big Shot to see if it would but at all. It did just fine . If by chance you have a thin little die about the size of 4 x 6 Just guessing as she is back in GA now. Help if you can.

    • @messageinafold
      @messageinafold  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you, Mickey Jo, I'm sorry your niece is having trouble with her Sizzix machine and the thin dies. I didn't try any of the thin dies that have intricate pieces with them so I will have to give that a try. YAY YOU! Her favorite Aunt saved the day for her by getting the cuts done on the Big Shot! At least all was not lost. I will see what I can do to replicate the problem your niece had and how to fix it.
      Hugs - Leslie

      +agrotv scrapp Thank you for watching my video and leaving a comment. The purple Sizzix dies are not as common as the red, I don't know the reason behind that. Maybe they were made for fabrics long, long, before they started making it known that all of the steel ruled dies can be used on fabric. I just don't know. TOTALLY COOL that you have found a way to use an old mouse mat to work with your Sizzix dies! Woo Hoo!

    I bought a die cutting machine in the UK for 5GBP.It works with all and any of the templates which I bought from China for between 99p to 2-99 each. I make my own cards anyway, just as a hobby so it is fun for me when I get time plus I had all the coloured paper and card that I picked up in Lidl.Crelando was2-99 for a large square book of card and the same for matching paper. I wouldn't recommend buying sissix. Its a bit like buying a betamax video player. PS. My pasta Maker makes perfect embossing on a4 paper, and cuts the dies too. Its the same machine. Mine qas about a tenner ina sale, but new.

      +Yvonne B Thank you for watching my video. The Original Sizzix machine has kind of been relegated to the deep dark recesses of our craft rooms since all the new and improved machines have come along. It might be worth your time to check out rummage sales, boot sales, and thrift shops to see if anyone has gotten rid of their old clunker. It is one HEAVY tool, I kid you not. The reason for this video was a subscriber had found one at a yard sale and got it for next to nothing and was not familiar with it. I appreciate you.

    Hi Leslie, I just happened to come across your site, and boy did this bring back OLD MEMORIES. This was the First machine I had, and I THINK I still have it. I have had almost every die cutting machine since. Just asking, but on the Wafer Thin dies, didn't we have to use the white ejection foam on them first? I have tons of Sizzlits, and the rectangle ones to. I have a few Embosslits but never used them. My memory is NOT what it use to be, but if you still have the letter from the woman who wrote you, she can go to her search bar and put in Online Garage Sale? IF I am remembering right, there are all kinds of people that have crafts and EVERYTHING they sell on line, and she may be able to find her dies for this machine for super cheap. I have the red, the yellow and the green old dies, like yours, but I think they are packed away in the basement. If I can find them and you have a email or can email me, I would be happy to try and find them and give them to her (the ones I don't want to keep) I have so many dies I have to get rid of some. I forgot all about these until I came across your video. Your a sweetheart to help this woman. Life is all about Paying it Forward. I remember the first woman who helped me, about 20 yrs ago when I broke my back and was home bound with nothing to do. Crafting saved my sanity. SO let me know. Blessings, Victoria PS. I subscribed and THUMBS UP!
