You missed the hint to a multiverse the doctor isn’t aware of. Alternative universe Master?
But doctor has dealt with the multi verse/other dimensions multiple times in both classic and new who

@@nathanrowland1918 True, but I believe in canon, Time Lords believe they are multidimensional (as in there is only one of them across the entire multiverse). There was a limited exception of sorts in Classic Who with the anti-matter universe. However, they could address Classic Who in this regard and the Academy teachings and I think an alt universe version of the Master is an intriguing idea. Or this version is a paradox that leads back to Missy. Perhaps that is why Missy became female. But I do like this explanation.
Nathan Rowland maybe the writers have forgotten? Seems like the doctor was confused by it. It could be a way to write the master back in. Also would be something for the series to use going forward.
Honestly it would make more sense than this being the regeneration right after Missy, it definitely felt like a step backward in terms of the character development she had near the end

This kind of mystery was super common in those days; the Doctor doesn't just land somewhere and get caught up in things, she's unraveling a long-term conspiracy that's specifically targeting the government. Ryan and Yaz's seperate interrogation of VOR felt like the sort of thing Sarah Jane and UNIT soldiers would do, especially since the Doctor spent her time investigating a totally diffrent location with a new supporting character connected the larger mystery. The new monsters felt more like Classic Who than modern Who; no catchphrase, simple premise, and a cheap but workable look. The presence of the Master (and especially the Tissue Compresor) is pretty obvios, even if he's still the wrong kind of hammy. What really sold it for me was the slow, deliberate pacing and the utter classic cliffhanger at the end.

Everywhere I look about the Master’s reveal, I’ve not seen a single person comment on his “Everything you think you know is a lie” remark to the Doctor.
Well, it was so obviously a lie itself that I'm going to ignore it ;)

I actually saw that end twist coming. I was sitting there like "Something's not quite right here..."
I was mixed about the episode. Some of the writing was pretty cringey... but it has potential.
Also, why was the Doctor confused about multiple Earths? Seriously? Glowy dude talks about taking over the universe, then the Doctor sees that multiple Earth information and can't put 2 + 2 together? Did I miss something?
Unfortunately the Doctor can only ever be as clever as the writer...
My biggest peeve, is the fact the Doctor is really slow and stupid in the episode, and yet it works for 13. Was that intentional Chibs?
most doctors do this get the information early, kill a person or two off and then be like...oh wait i get it now.... and the doctor is suppose to be smarter then humans...lol

well wwaayy back in davids era he said they way back that dimensional travel used to be around aallll the time but with the death of the time lords it ceased completely apart from accidental travel which the time it happened to him after he left he immediately closed the portal behind him

I know some people may hate me on this. But I really liked the Missy Redemption story. By the final part of Series 10, I was starting to like the idea that maybe The Doctor and Missy/Master could finally settle their differences. And also, Michelle Gomez was just the best. I miss Missy....

The Boneless couldn't go through walls, they were from a 2D dimension. These creatures are fully 3D (in HD and with surround sound, maybe even subtitled, I don't know).

Well he didn’t really steal o’s (oh’s? Idk) body. The body he had in his pocket was o’s corpse. The master used tissue compression to murder him. This was something the master used throughout the classic series.

I fully agree. This episode was definitely a banger and fixed a number of issues with the previous series: useful companions, great monsters, interesting villains, and connections to the greater Whoniverse. Good stuff

Vanessassary - oh sorry, my bad. However you have to agree that after announcing Ryan had dyspraxia at the beginning of series 11 they barely mentioned it again nor did it inconvenience him. I think it’s great to have a character with this as it creates awareness but they could show the struggles of having it as well

I would list a down for still using the bad generic fonts for the locations. At least they were not as bad as in Resolution (those looked more like WordArt.)
An up for a subtle reminder of Ryan’s dyspraxia without having to overtly state it.
And a major up for the bringing back the tissue compression. That gadget goes back to the Delgado/Ainsley eras.
Speaking of Ainsley, his Master also came from a stolen body, which was shown in The Keeper of Trakken. What made it more shocking is the body was Nyssa’s father.
Don't spy movies and series use that generic font for locations usually? Since this is a spy oriented/themed episode, I think it's ok to use a generic font.
Alexandra Hefnerová many use plain fonts, but the size was a bit large. At least it wasn’t as large as when they were used for Resolution.
On a side note, I should retract the down a bit for using a form of the classic Doctor Who font for the locations.
They left it ambiguous enough that this incarnation of the Master could be between Simm and Gomez.

Keep in mind that each Master (just like the Doctor) has a separate personality and appearance than their previous incarnations, so they could very easily retcon Missy’s redemption arc and it would be consistent and normal. Missy was very different from Simm’s Master, so this version of the master can be very different from Missy and simply not give two shits about what happened in the past.
This is also assuming that O’s master is actually the master since Missy is supposed to be dead, killed by Simm.
BUT! If this is actually the Master, then I do really hope that *at least* the master and doctor will actually acknowledge and have a conversation about his past as Missy and her redemption arc.
Meh, I’m not too bothered. Missy only exists because they retconned Master Saxon’s pseudo-redemption, and forgiveness of the Doctor in End of Time part 2. The master is always going to come back as evil, and I don’t think that ringfencing Missy’s redemption arc is going to do the character any favours in the context of the long-term viability and relevance. I would rather see her redemption and time with the doctor forgotten, than find out that were like five Masters between Simm and Gomez.

You think the doctor would regenerate and become evil due to a new personality, they still retain the same premise because their memories affect a huge part of their personality which is why the same traits always remain. So regeneration doesn't change someone's morality, only character development can do that idiot. Tom Baker even stated that although they have a different personality it doesn't change their morality because they are the same person deep down. So you are talking utter BS.

I think there might be some evidence that O is between Simm's Master and Missy. The actor showed us some mimicry of Michelle's Master via a line similar to "try to keep up" from Dark Water, and those weird inhales/exhales, and some Simm mannerisms via straight up yelling victoriously at the Doctor and being hyperactive. Though, those might as well be just acting choices made during research of the role.
Sorry I didn't think that the new Master is "spine-chilling" though I did like the episode as a whole.
He's rather underwhelming compared the last two incarnations.
I couldn't take him serious, he isn't intimidating in the slightest..

I thought that the episode was alright with a well executed twist at the end, genuinely didn't think it was The Master. We'll see what Sunday brings.

@@JeppeBeier No, he asked how I hadn't noticed it before now (at least I think thats what he said, I'm too lazy to scroll back) ie. last season. That's the one I didn't watch all the way through
"O" tells Graham that he has crossed paths with the Doctor once, when she was a man. If he's telling the (somewhat) truth, then this could be a very early-on regeneration of The Master - maybe even before the ones in the classic episodes. The other option is that this is a "new" Master, from another dimension, so he hasn't had all of those past experiences with The Doctor that the original Master did. Which could also mean that the glowing creatures are other Masters, from multiple other universes, trying to come through (like in Army of Ghosts) in to our universe.
Also, if O's house is a TARDIS, wouldn't the doctor have realized that as soon as she stepped inside? It's also odd that The Master would risk allowing The Doctor inside his TARDIS.

There's also the option, that he's not telling Graham the full truth, you know, he disguised himself as a human, humans don't usually have more than one lifetime, unlike Time Lords, so mentioning, that he met the Doctor multiple times, when she was still a man, could be suspicious, even more, when the Doctor said herself earlier, that she met O only once, but they had lots of correspondence. Meeting the Doctor multiple times would be much of a give away, that O isn't, who he said he is, too soon.

I think the fact that the tissue compressor and the Masters TARDIS is back deserves an up in itself.
The Master came off as a cartoon character. Not surprised younger people think this was just AWESOME......as a generation who think fart jokes every five minutes in a cartoon is the funniest thing ever
Remember when The Doctor took Martha and Amy around in the Tardis, but then brought them back to where they left off in their lives? I guess now they have to submit unexcused absences.
The TARDIS has always had a tendency to be unreliable at many times. Rose returned a year after she left.
Something is definitely off here. Same time & place before being on board the TARDIS. But this must have changed, so anything is possible. Curious what other twists might happen next

The part where she said "I've had an upgrade." When C assumes The Doctor is a man seemed forced, it's like if you're going to have a gender equality message by having a female Doctor, maybe don't have her state that being a woman is better than the implied, inferior, male predecessors. Shits on literally everything that's come before; why not just say "Fancied a change" or "Got bored"? It would achieve the same goal without degrading any gender.

What I find a little odd about your review is that it’s just the action. The most delicious times of any ep are performance moments by the Doctor, and the highlight of this episode was her phone call that ended with “kisses.“ Jodey continues to kill it as one of the best Doctors ever. I would also point out the chilling moment when the alien starts to enter the tardis and the Doctor takes off just in time.
Time Lords can chose who they look like (Romanadvoratrelundar in Destiny of the Daleks). He didn't take over O's body (the body was in the matchbox), he changed his appearance to match O's on O's first day of work at MI6, and has spent the past however many years pretending to be O.
C looked more like he was shot with a dart or something. All the other shots coming in were energy weapons. Maybe he was just knocked out and taken prisoner (the beings were surrounding him at the end of his scene, and they've shown that they can transport people without harming them).

Honestly, I was surprised and disappointed that the Doctor didn't even consider the multiverse concept when she looked at the map of the alien spies that then separated into multiple earth maps. I mean, she supposedly made a friend with a separate, sentient universe so it's not like the idea is a foreign concept to her. Also, I think it took me all of maybe two minutes after O was first introduced to figure out he was the bad guy. I didn't see the reveal of him being the Master coming, but it felt pretty obvious he was a bad guy pretty much from his intro. Of course, I was fully expecting the Master to come back anyway since his "death" as Missy was something he actually would have seen coming, given the fact that as his male self he would have known about the betrayal his next regeneration was planning for him and how he would "kill" her back. It's something the Master would have planned for. I just didn't think they'd be bringing the Master back so soon after only one season. Then again, like one person in this thread already mentioned, it could be the Master from another multiverse or dimension. We'll see.
NL Paradox I think she more or less didn’t clue into the multiverse thing cause wasn’t any and all ways to cross multiverses basically closed off permanently after “Doomsday”? Like she might still believe it’s just no longer possible to crossover.
@@leere5524 as best as I understood it, only the doorway to that specific alternate universe was closed in Doomsday.

I liked the fact that they got the actor from AN ADVENTURE IN SPACE & TIME who played the original D.W. director Wallis Hussein to become The Master. That, plus his line 'we go way, way back' is also what Matt Smith's Doctor said about the Ice Warriors in COLD WAR.

It's not. They returned to that in later episodes. "Can you hear me" comes to mind.
He isn't The Master he is a Master. Multiple Earths. No character development from Missy.
Character development from Missy doesn't matter. We have incarnations of 2-12 of the master still to meet, the first master we ever saw was his 13th incarnation.
Tbh, I'd hate for that to be the case. The use of multiverse frequently just devalues any sense of consequence, for me at least. A character died? It's fine, there's another version of them. It'd almost be like a in-canon reboot of characters on the whim of the writers.
Even the possibility of this Master being between John Simm and Missy has me a little uncomfortable. The most intriguing theory I've seen is that the Master managed to body hop after being blasted by the sonic and has gone mad. But I guess we'll find out tomorrow hopefully.

Since Missy was killed, I've had this theory that any future incarnations of the master are between John Simm and Gomez. Simm asked Missy several times in that episode if he turned into her and she never gave a straight answer. The closest we got was a throw away remark about there being some stumbles along the way.
I started shouting “what” when the master was revealed and my mind was blown.
The doctor got an Upgrade - Down
Until the glowy alien caught in the box started to talk, I was absolutely thinking Army Of Ghosts -- a footprint doesn't look like a boot. There seemed to be something around the tops of the glowy aliens' heads, but the speech we heard was nothing like Cybermen.
What was that. Guns & 'splosions & car car chases! Felt like the worst aspects of Torchwood when it took US money and made a US show. Bullets only hitting headlights. Hope this isn't what we have now, especially considering it took an amazing existing story line and completely undid it with this episode. I don't understand the love for this. Very disappointed (in the episode and in this one-sided review). Negatives listed aplenty but no 'downs' to speak of.
What amazing existing storyline did it take and undo? I personally loved this episode, as it was a fresh change from Series 11, which we all needed.
Assuming that missy is the very last regeneration of the Master's cycle, that leaves ten possible incarnations within his normal lifespan to explore. He was resurrected by the time-lords but fled from the war, regenerating into a new body (Yana), who then regenerated into Simms. i'd much rather the explored this middle period that retcon Missy's definitive death.
Simm's version of the master killed missy in s10 episodes world enough & time/ the Doctor falls when he gave her a blast of his sonic laser he gave her the full blast so she didn't have the ability to regenerate.
Except the interaction at the start is sexist... The Doctor says she's had an upgrade. If a man said that after replacing Jodie there would be uproar. Sexism goes both ways....
It was a joke... Current Doctor always thinks (s)he is better than the ones before. That´s nothing new
It’s not sexist, it’s a reference foreshadowing the return of the master, and a pithy comment that was clearly referring to regeneration, and not swapping genders specifically.

If it was David Tennant, no one would move an eyebrow. C said, that the Doctor is a man (when even his assistant knew, who the Doctor is. C claimed to read the materials, what materials? When did said materials update the last time?), what should she reply? This was the most neutral joke ever. "I've regenerated" would sound just stupid. The Doctor is widely known to joke around, sometimes even at weird places and weird times, but that's who he/she is, the Doctor.
I have to be honest and say it, I genuinely loved Skyfall (Part 2 even more than 1 but both of them). The very best thing for me was, perhaps more than the Doctor and Team TARDIS, the surprise reveal of The Master.
They smashed it..hey maybe Chib is going to play the one major card left by RD. There is a mortal non regenerating human/timelord in the altverse of Bad Wolf Bay. Perhaps that's the version of 10 that 13 is going to meet with in series 12 if the Tennant episode(s) rumors are true. Maybe this Master is from that altverse and those shiny aliens are from their as well hence the Cyber/ghost vibe the had.
It’s worth remembering that Anthony Ainley’s master was just the master spirit possessing a guys body, and we got him as the master for 8 years, so I think there’s a chance that this master will be staying
god i hope not - im hoping the writers can come up with something original this year instead of just re-hashing the same bad guys again and again
nick carnevalino literally every bad guy last season was original, the only old one was the dalek and that had a massive redesign, which was one of the complaints people had, I think they need to have a good mixture of new and old, and maybe some of the new ones can become classics like the weeping angels did
Ffynlo Parnell - completely agree, there's 60 years of history to look back on you can't just scrap it, you need balance that was not there last series
I'm not too worried about O rewriting Misssy's story arc in the sense that he is after her in the time-line because he may not be. If Roger Delgado was the first, or last, version of the Master before Deadly Assassin and then Keeper of Traken there could be as many regenerations of the Master running round the galaxy as there are regenerations of the Doctor.
O could be Master number 6 or 7 or....

O becoming the master could be after Simon's version of the master. when missy injured him in world enough & time/the Doctor falls he then crawled into his tardis & he still had the ability to regenerate unlike missy, she got the full blast so it's likely he came after Simms version of the master.

I agree with most of this. Except, I'd add a negative for some more cringy choppy dialogue, and another for why they didn't just take the TARDIS to chase after Lenny Henry's character. Have another chase scene like one we had in the Runaway Bride.

If the new Master follows on from Missy could Missy be like a version of the Valyard. Could it be common thing for Timelord personalities to change from one extreme to another at a certain point in their regenerations as it wouldn't be the first time because it happend in the Five Doctors and the Trial of a Timelord.

Maybe it’s the continued lack of music from Murray Gold (I really miss the unique themes that the Doctor and the companions used to have)? Or there’s something off with the writing?

I really dont like the new master, the characters story had ended in a very coherent way, one of the best endings in the series. The master returning to me just shows theyve run out of ideas and are trying to rehash all the old storied

1:09 the enemy’s are not translucent 😂. Translucent means that light can pass through but they cannot be seen through. I see where you are coming from but they emit their own light so cannot be translucent.
Personally I still don’t like the dialogue with the chibnal era, also I still want Jodie to have a doctor moment and show more than “quirky” and if that happens in part two I’ll be over the moon, as shes still not sold me or my family on her as the doctor

@@guspirlot9661 He actually got a lot of info from the Matrix. He visited Gallifrey long before becoming O. It does make sense, that an earlier Master would like to be updated on latest events. But then it wouldn't make sense, that the later Masters would have forgotten the events of this Master and the 13th Doctor. So yea, pretty much confusing. Welcome to Doctor Who. XD

chibs seemed to listen to most criticisms. But he still fails to write the doctor. She's still a side character, she still does things out of the doctors character. Also chibs still ignoring the tardis. 2 things that are the backbone of who. Jodie is doing a better job but she still doesn't cut it. She still has no presence and hasn't made her own doctor yet. I'm glad the funny scrunch faces are gone though. I'm sure chibs seen all the memes.
