It's a small detail, but you can see the Ghost Devil sneak in a cheeky smile once Himeno offers that deal. These contracts are also a chance for the devils to continue enabling and enjoying human fear and suffering.
That detail was in the manga

Yeah in the manga it’s much more noticeable since there’s a panel focusing on that specifically. Also the expression in the anime hardly changes so it’s easy to miss
I really don't understand all the people here saying it's barely noticeable in the anime. To me that was one of the things that most standed out from that moment. The ghost even recoils back a bit as if it was surprised and then the devious smile forms. Sure enough it's kinda subtle but your brain immediately picks up on it
@@JF-vz1ju Idk why they made it so much less noticable in anime while the manga has 3 penals from from a small smirk to a big cheerful smile. it shows the sinister nature of devils how they yearn for human sufferings.
I wish we had gotten more Himeno, she seemed like a very complicated person which I love and I think she may have played off Denji rejecting her based on those super drawn out pauses.
And the line she dropped; "Having someone care for you enough to cry like that... must be nice." It kinda feels like she is just a tremendously lonely person.

yeah that line kills me, Himeno is such a messily beautiful and very human character
Himeno was the type of person to seek out any sense of pleasure she could get (smoking, alcohol, sex, etc.) because her life was just so shitty otherwise. Imagine seeing 5 of your partners die (which their loved ones mostly blame you for) while also having most of your coworkers get killed, probably all in horrific ways at that. No wonder she was such a disaster. It really sucks that she died like that. She deserved the chance to be happy in a healthy environment, but she wouldn't abandon Aki. RIP
I doubt she would get much pleasure from s3x with denji being in that state, it had to be more her wanting to feel loved or wanted. Its like she said, "having someone care enough for you to cry like that", she innocently wanted to believe deep inside that denji could care about her that much if she gave him s3x. I know it sounds ocmplicated for someone drunk, but with a woman, there are 2 things that are engrained primordially in their psyche: 1- they don't get much pleasure out of s3x like the s3x she would've got with denji in that state, is not like guys who can feel in heaven just for the act, ergo, and is not like denji was in any state for properly taking care of her, even when sober he wouldn't even know what a pus5y is like lmao, not much pleasure for her in it, 2- the feeling of emotinal or psychological reward in the act is much more of a protagonist for women during the act, than it is for guys, so even drunk it makes absolute sense for her to seek out pshychological reward or satisfaction, even when sober, women are more used to pay atention to that by default since they don't feel much from the act in itself, or at least from the dull in and out that denji could've provided, if even that.
Why I love this guy reaction ? Cause he is really watching the show, he pays attention to everything that is said, and what's show but not tell.
Every detail and nuances, the guy knows what he's talking about, and appreciate a good show!!
The way Himeno disappeared into nothingness, not even a corpse left behind makes it even sadder. I gives me a feeling of uncertainties of her death.
It's almost like it hammers home just how insignificant she was and her efforts because she left nothing behind
Some manga readers have theorized that the people who offer their whole selves to devils don’t just die, but rather become parts of the devil. This is somewhat supported by a shot in the ED, with Himeno sitting in what looks like a clearing made of arms.
This is all cope and speculation though. Not confirmed AT ALL.

If you’re wondering why this ep looked so good, it’s because it was directed by Shota Gonshozono. He is also rumored to be the new director for JJK season 2. He uses 3d landscapes in early stages of layouts and draws over them to allow himself to manipulate perspective radically and efficiently

Holy shit if he will direct Shibuya arc then JJK season 2 will become the greatest anime of decade.
Himeno’s death scene is just so well done and really sad, it caught a lot of people off guard. Her character was probably my favorite in the show so far, so I was really bummed out after this episode. I know this is really just the beginning, so I’m both excited and nervous to see where it goes next
I love how at 8:56 it seems like the Ghost and Himeno "shake" hands as the ghost hand is going to the ground, sealing their last contract.
They humanize really Himeno really well in just 3 - 4 episode. Started out not only losing her partners but became punching bag for their loved ones and from the sentence "their tears run dry" she herself develop numbness and loneliness, until Aki came in and essentially be her knight in shining armor from her self loathing way, made her hopeful, even develop romantic feelings for my boi. She deserves better
The score is called sweet dreams only for it to be crushed by the snake devil into silence and heavy breathing of Aki.

One cool thing to bare in mind is that whenever Makima talk to Denji, you would think she is uplifting him up with her kind words. If you think about what she say to Denji, theyre kinda romantic yet could also mean on complete different way. Like on the lollipop scene. She's so bold and could hint her plans for future while being calm and collected. Too bad it was cut out on here but for me it's the smartest move that the series had in this episode.

I was so shocked when I read this part in the manga. Literally thought I was seeing things wrong. To go from the party so soon before to this.

The moment where the snake disappeared from the shot in one frame is truly remarkable, one of my favorite moments in a tv show this year.
i absolutely adore that moment, its so surreal and uncanny and it fits due to how otherworldy the power and sudden defeat feels

Well Fujimoto doesn't explain stuff's and left the readers to make theories on their own. He said this on an interview btw.
I had very high expectations for this episode having read the manga, and the show still absolutely went above and beyond and utterly blew me away. Some really wonderful anime-original scenes and exceptional adaptations of key sequences (including some panels that I didn't have much hope for because of how creatively tied to the original medium of the manga they were).
We are well and truly on Mr. Fujimoto's Wild Ride, now!

Favorite episode so far. The cinematography in this anime is a joy to watch.
Pretty sure you were already clued in, but this is Fujmoto's trademark style. It's shocking WTF moments happening one after the other with no respite. It's why the manga is well loved. Fujimoto is just insane. It's like he's taking meth everytime he writes a chapter.
The prologue is over. Time for the real chainsaw man.

The way they tied the Yukaza from the first episode back in is phenomenal. Not just from a storytelling point of view, but also the atmosphere of the two episodes. Episode 1 was dark and had Denji literally killed, chopped to pieces, and thrown away. Things only got better when Denji returned from the dead thanks to Pochita. This episode is dark in a very similar way, and I can't wait to see if Denji returning to life is key to success once more!

Himenos death scene was really executed perfectly. Every episode's directing is so impressive
One of the interesting things noted by some other reactors. With Makima and the rest of the fourth division it's all business, no words, just bullets. With Denji, it's PERSONAL. Yakusa Grandson just had to do it himself and talk to him first.
It's crazy that sometimes I look forward to your reactions to an episode more than the episode itself haha.
I was thinking the same thing about the sword devil man possibly containing gun flesh based on his speed. The blonde girl interested me since she probably isn't a devil due to having a contract with the snake devil, yet it seems like she still has some sort of unique ability (based on how she seemed to bring back sword dude). Great reaction as always man!

The only problem is that after 4 more episodes there is going to be a long wait. However, it is possible for mappa to make a movie for the next arc of the story, which woudl decrease the wait to only around 1 year
I like how they've made use of 3D for the devils, they've blended it with the artstyle but because its 3D they feel unnatural and make you feel slightly uncomfortable not enough to detract from the show but just enough were they feel wrong in some way.
I love so much your analysis about the chapter and how you envision every scene so you can give your opinion. I would looooveeee to have your analysis in a podcast format so I can hear you as I do my daily routine.

Woohoo, I commented back on Episode 2 or 3 that I was real excited to watch you react to this series, but unfortunately ended up busy for a while and finally binge caught-up last week. You're definitely the most insightful channel I watch; some of your comments over these episodes have made me notice and think of new things and pieces of writing even as a 2+ time manga reader, so kudos (for example, the tilting hotel and Inception similarities). I'll post a brief accumulation of notes from prior episodes - hope longer form comments aren't too much and you enjoy seein 'em.
First off, lil bits from prior episodes: was very amused you correctly predicted that Power padded her chest because of the flashbacks, the reveal to Denji is one of the best comedic moments to me. Was similarly cool to see you immediately peg the Aki flashback before it was explicitly shown to be him later in the episode. I loooove the graveyard setting from the Himeno flashbacks, it's such a visually striking setting IMO and I was glad when the quick cut as Aki was stabbed made you audibly "whoa." Was also glad to hear you sympathize with Kobeni and Arai compared to a lot of other people who just sort of meme on them - not that I dislike other channels joking and having fun, just cool to see you get thoughtful and break those kinds of things down. More on Arai, I love the moment where he's caring for Denji in the bathroom and talks about his mom. So brief but so humanizing and lets you imagine an entire backstory for him in a similar vein to Kobeni.
And onto this episode: the Himeno perspective of her arriving home was an anime-only addition, like Aki's morning routine earlier (the only two scenes so far, plus some extra animation/action in a couple fights). They were both great choices to add in that really set the mood of those scenes, and I knew when I saw them that you'd love their cinematic execution. It remains impressive to me how impactful Himeno is as a character in such a short time - that opening scene of her conversing with Denji over breakfast makes it all the more impactful when she's ripped away at the end of the episode. It's the tropey "talk about future plans" death flag, but done right. This is definitely one of my favorite chunks of the series and where I think a lot of manga readers would say the series hits its real stride, so strap in and enjoy!
Brief edit addition: almost forgot to mention the score. I'm in the same boat loving it so far, but what really stuck out to me as near-perfect this episode was that muffled buildup to the execution.
Last thing for either Im or Sephizen - is there a place to recommend stuff? I know Patreon says it has some polls (which I'll probably hit up) and there's the list of general future plans, but somewhere to drop specific titles?
There's no dedicated place for recommendations (that I know of anyway), if you do it in a place he actually visits then you're set. This comment section once he's given the green light to check it, Patreon and Twitter are your best options for visibility.

@@legfanatic10 Yeah the idea was raised before, there was a Discord server made a couple years ago but it never went public. As you said, the prospect of spoilers makes it a little complicated, kind of a similar reason as to why he privated his Instagram around that time too. I don't know if he plans to reboot those plans or what his stance on it all is though, he'd have to answer that himself.

FYI: The yakuza dude never gets an official name. He is mostly known as the Katana Man which, if I'm correct, isn't even his canon title. But I saw a reactor refer to him as "Machete Mister" so that's what I'm gonna call him from now on 🤣🤣

I wonder what do devils get through their contacts? Because for the humans is a big deal to be able to use devils powers, but what do devils get in return? Human body parts? How or why is that advantageous for them?
From what I understand, devils love human suffering, I believe that power said that it is in their nature, so they could be doing the contracts either for their own enjoyment or maybe to make them fear the fact that they have to give up organs and limbs to be capable of even doing their jobs as hunters, which maybe helps the devils grow stronger with the fear, like the eternity devil did with the rookies, but that's just a guess.
