Nissan Sentra : Stuck On Defrost / Vibrating Heater Fan

  • In this video we have a look at this 2001 Nissan Sentra that has a broken HVAC controller. It is an easy fix with a couple of zip ties! We also have a look at the vibration that is coming from the blower motor when it is turned on high speed. Lucky for me there was no dead mouse this time. Oh yeah, we also top off the A/C and find a leak in the high pressure hose. -Enjoy!

    To everyone asking why Mr O didn’t put in a new cabin filter is because only the high trim level Sentra came with one. This one has the door where you would put it in but no framework to support it. It would just fall into the blower motor.

    I finished this repair about 10 minutes ago on an '06 Sentra. It took 30 minutes and worked like a charm for the cost of three zip ties! It saved me from driving with cold feet and a foggy windscreen all winter. Thanks for the fantastic videos.

      People will spend their grocery money and max out their credit cards to get the AC working! You have to spin all your repair estimates in the summer by adding "and then the AC won't work" For instance you could say "It really needs a timing belt soon and if it breaks it will destroy the engine" they won't care, but if you say "You really need a timing belt soon, or it will destroy your engine and then the AC won't work" they will whip out the Master Card!

    Something I've done many times with success (in similar but not identical repairs) is to drill a small hole in the plastic on each side of the cable.....then you have holes right where u need them and can fish the ziptie through and be in direct contact with the cable....works great for the retention of wires and cables....assuming you use quality zipties

    • @Joseph1NJ
      @Joseph1NJ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Surprisingly, Harbor Freight zip ties seem pretty good, and they're pretty cheap too. Good enough for me to trust them to hold inner fender liners together when I can't find the right style/size/length of plastic peg to hold them in the way the factory did it anyways.

    Either planned obsolescence or poor engineering. That plastic molding with a metal clip holding a cable down to a stop, coupled with the force necessary to actuate a gate in the air flow are an accident waiting to happen. And it's been worked on before (no one knows how many times to keep it up and running). Sometimes it seems we are going backwards in quality. Myself, I'd have drilled a hole on each side the cable end and attached the cable tie at the point of contention. But that's just me. Re-engineering is something necessary sometimes.

  • @sharedknowledge6640

    There's a good reason why Nissan is a very distant third among the Japanese car companies. They consistently get this stuff wrong. Honda sells far more Civics and Toyota far more Corollas than Nissan could ever dream of selling Sentras. The same is true for the P.O.S. Altima vs the Accord and Camry. Nissan needs to either be competitive or give up . Check out their ancient Frontier pickup for yet another example of how far behind they are.

      Kenneth, the issue is that over time (15+ years) plastic parts dry out and become very fragile, rubber parts rot and fall apart, and metal parts rust and crumble. As a result, none of these materials tends to survive even the most delicate manipulation. If the parts break it is often tough to find a new replacement and a used replacement will often have the same deterioration issues.

    • @innocentoctave
      @innocentoctave 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. Blaming everything on 'chinesium' is just lazy thinking. Materials are materials - they all age, no matter where the part was manufactured. They also have an expected life before failure, and many of the parts on this vehicle will beyond theirs.

    Bought a 2000 F350 a couple months ago. The previous owner said "the A/C works, but it could be better." Turned out to be the same basic issue, only blowing out of the defrost and a little out of the floor vents. Turned out to be a bad vacuum pump (7.3 diesel) and someone had put a couple rocks under the floor actuator rod to force the floor door open somewhat.

    If you want to save your knees and back, get a couple different sized mirrors that you can lay down on the floor/console to look at the underside of stuff like that. I rigged up an old round shaving mirror with a heavier base that I can put on the floor and see up into the bottom of the dash. I've also got a mirror about the size of a clipboard for the same thing that gives a wider field of view.
    Handy trick for working on the plumbing under sinks too.
    Learned that trick from acoustic guitar repairers. they stick a large flat mirror through the soundhole to work on the braces on bottom of the guitar's top.

    I tend advise good n quick homebrew fix on older stuff over new parts when cost silly and it a known failure area anyway with no part revision .
    Hopefully the double donger ties will hold well but they could stretch/loosen over time .

    That generation of Sentra is pure garbage. They literally fall apart, not just the glove box doors either. My parent had an 2001, they got rid of it at just 70K miles because it was so problematic. Several O2 sensors failed, radiator sprung a leak, A/C condenser sprung a leak, Much of the interior trim just fell off, including the glove box door. The rear bumper started to sag.

      I've got a 98 200SX SE (pretty much the same as the Sentra) with the big 1.6L and a 5spd and I love it. 139K on it now and it's on my second high school age daughter, with the 3rd coming up this fall. Granted, it's on it's third clutch (teen age girls are a little hard on clutches when learning and I made the mistake of putting in aftermarket clutch parts on the first clutch I did on it) but I can do a clutch on it in half a day so I can't think of a better manual transmission platform to teach my kids on. It's 20 years old but it starts and runs every single day.

      A few of my friends have these sentras and they have been dead reliable for them. Just oil changes and brakes. Two have working ac, the one that does not hit a racoon and took out the condenser, my friend says the windows are good enough for him.

      I have friends and family with Nissans. Beside replacing the battery terminal their cars never show up in my driveway. The Toyotas never show up either. Seems like the frieds with Chryslers and GMs show up with their cars on the tow truck on a fairly regular basis though.

    I remember working on them.... Those heater controls are next to in possible to find used. We used to use windshield urethane to hold the cables in place with the zip ties it worked for us not one person ever wanted to spend the $400+ they were asking. Great fix.

    Had a similar issue with my first car, an Audi 80 from 1985. What I learned after a bunch of repairs was that both those rigid bowden cables and the mechanism needed lubrication!

    I wonder if adding a few drops of epoxy or if that's to rigid then maybe some rubber cement... just throwing that out there.

    If your cabin filter becomes plugged, remove and discard. Your evaporator and heater core will act as a filter.

      They were rusted beyond repair but had good mechanicals.

    I have an 06 Niss-anne Frontier. Last time the A/C was touched, it was me, I had to remove the dash to change the recirculation (or "inside/outside" as Nissan calls it) motor. Not fun! That was 2011. System's probably a little low, maybe I can drive there and have you fix it. Oh ya. I live in Palmdale California. Would be a nice drive though. Ya, I don't have a machine. Oh well, just a thought!

    Had you ever use 'Thommas & Betts' zip tie ? They are expensive and hard to find (commercial) but they dont failed and u can tight them to the moon .. the plastic is smoother and retainer tab is made of steel instead of plastic .. A french mecanik Downtown Montreal QC :)

  • @MasterChief-sl9ro
    @MasterChief-sl9ro 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    They make a plastic sleeve now. That goes over the cable. Then you super glue it under the metal tab. It ain't moving. Same for Ford Vans door cables. But they are metal that replace the plastic ends that just fall off over time. As the cable for Fords is $260.00 for 2 cables...

    Very helpful! Thank you! I have a question. How much does it cost to diagnose and replace a leaking hose? My Sentra has a slow leak and I've been buying an AC can from Walmart each summer and it lasts about a year before I need to recharge.

  • @wonniewarrior
    @wonniewarrior 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Had a 82 falcon with no AC pump on it. So in a Australian summer, I would drive with heater on full as well with bonnet (hood) open with a block of wood between the latch and bonnet holder. It used the latch to keep it shut, but allowed extra open space for extra air to flow over the radiator onto engine itself. Drive with heater off and temp was 3/4 of gauge. Drive with heater on and it would drop to just over 1/2 temp gauge. Was not a pleasant driving experience, but 1 most of us older Australians could cope with. Relied on the heater bypass into cabin heater to take enough of the engine heat away. Oh and that was the notorious alloy head 4.1 crossflow. Now that I am older, I appreciate AC and other mod cons but at least I drove in my younger days with manual steering, no ABS, no AC, and could feel the road through the steering wheel. We knew how to handle skids, aquaplaning and not having cruise control.

    What, No duct tape? Hahaha. Sorry couldn't help myself. After working in the used car field believe me when I say I know the zip tie fix well. And in this case it was the right fix. Probably an obsolete part and all the used will have the same issues, Plus the customer usually doesn't care as long as it's fixed and didn't cost to much. Plus you give them the option to fix at a latter date. Well done brother Once again showing the good side of auto repair...

    Ever since my zone selector failed, my AC has been stuck on. Switch lights still come on and off.. Can't imagine what's up with it. While it broke in the position that sets it blowing through the front vents, the selector IS stuck on windshield. it allowed it to turn that far before the dreaded metallic clink noise of the clip falling out happened... Does that run AC on automatically?

  • @Chris-Fennimore
    @Chris-Fennimore 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Eric, to hold the cable in place with a zip-tie, wrap the zip-tie around the cable 2 or 3 times before continuing to wrap the zip-tie around the retaining mount. Do this with 2 or 3 zip-ties, and you should be good to go for a year or 2.

      I guess Nissan has one HVAC system for several models, like Ford did with steering columns back in the 90s. From the Escort to the F150 they all had the same column, just different steering wheel, combo switch, shifter, etc.

    Instead of a zip tie try mechanic's wire. Put a couple wraps around the cable jacket to stop it from sliding then wire the whole thing down. Zip tie will break again.
