  • Julio Rodriguez has had a rough 2024 campaign, one that has seen him be one of the worst hitters on the Mariners so far. In this video, I wanted to take a look at all the different issues that have arisen for the superstar this year.

Like this video but that is not what barrel percentage is. A "barrel" is a batted ball with similar hit types in exit velocity and a launch angle that has led to a minimum . 500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage. So, barrel percentage is a measure of how often you hit a ball within those expectation parameters. That's what you're seeing on his savant page when you look at barrels. It does not measure how often he hits the ball on the barrel of the bat.
What you can take from this is that Julio is not hitting the ball as hard or at optimal launch angles as he was in the past.

Maybe because the surrounding cast is so awful, Julio is placing too much pressure on himself - I don’t expect the current surrounding cast to get any better - this does not play out well for him

I know this is probably an insane idea, but I noticed that Julio started hitting regularly when Clase was called up. The whole team had a temporary spark from his arrival, and it faded after he left. But I think Julio is inspired by young guys especially those from the DR area that he might view as friendly competition or he respects. Like he can’t let the new kid come up and outplay him. As soon as Clase got a hit, Julio got one too. You can see the energy and confidence shift in him when he has a “brother” around. I also think that when they play teams with other young successful players he steps up his game. 5 hits in the Bal series, 5 hits and 4 hits in the two KC series. Witt Jr, De La Cruz, Rutschman, Henderson are part of his generation outperforming him at their positions. He raises his game against Cincinnati too; did okay vs AZ, but Carroll was struggling too so not the giving competitive juice he needed. His eyes sparkle when he plays against certain guys like Santana, Juan Soto, etc. When there’s a big spotlight like national tv or Apple TV, he doesn’t seem to step up his game at all. I wonder if the presence of certain people intimidate him. i.e. 4/29 and 4/30 JK in the lineup for Atl, Julio got zero hits. 5/1 JK not in the lineup and Julio got 3 hits. Anyway, I’m sure there is a lot to the mechanics that can be fixed, and I also think his mental skills coach might need to bring in reinforcements.

Yeah I’ve always felt he needs someone at his level to help raise the bar for him. Servais is a pretty good mentor but too much of a dad figure. He needs an older bro in that lineup. I would love to see him and Soto in Seattle come 2025.
