Having warm background for Jedi and cool one for Sith actually helped their colors (red face of Maul and blue sabers) pop! I really like how the result looks thanks to the limited color palette - you refined this palette pretty well! I also like this small pattern of dashes near Maul's face and three little planets (spheres) on top, and the final fade from purple to black, well done!
Thanks so much, that's a good point about the warm/cool! The little dashes were meant to represent the units of battle droids - pretty low res to make out, but the intent was there! 😅
4:47 little pro-tip that not a lot of people know about Photoshop: you can actually type math equations into any value field. In this case it's a bit redundant because it's not difficult to calculate x+8 but in case anyone is using more complicated numbers or just doesn't want to run the risk of making any mistakes you can always just type any equation and Photoshop will turn that into the new value. Also works with multiplication and division as well as percentages.
For most the people I know, the Sequels were so damn bad that it made us far more accepting of the Prequels. The same thing happened with the Hobbit movies, after watching Amazon's Rings of Power. It makes me very scared to think of what the next Star Wars trilogy will be, that will be so godawfully bad as to make the Sequels palatable.
For me, the Kenobi series really helped reveal just how many good ideas were in the Prequel, as did the Clone Wars and Bad Batch series.. Seeing the Anakin/Hayden performance soar was incredibly satisfying and shows that George's core idea for the character were spot on, and perhaps just needed more working and more time to make sense.
Your words at the beginning resonate with me; for me it was the 2008 Clone Wars movie; that was the first SW release that I was old enough to appreciate and I LOVED it! 🤩 I also appreciate some of these iterations with this video, from seeing how the canvas size came to be, to the colour palette itself being an evolution of the one used in the Mario sprite! Excellent timing with this being the 25th anniversary of TPM, may the force be with you! ⭐⚔️
Thanks! ⭐️ That's awesome, I've yet to fully dive into all the animated Clone Wars material but it's always been on my radar; feels like there's a lot of important pieces of lore to be found there. And yeah, pretty happy with how it all came together; I like when an older bit of work (like the Mario sprite) can come back around to help in other ways 😄✨
Fantastic work. The color choices are perfect. Also it's amazing how much people have come around on the Prequels, now that they have actually bad Star Wars movies for reference.
Aaaahhh. The Phantom Menace. I "had" to watch it with my then six years old brother after our mother refused to watch it with him. I saw the movie the first time several days before, so I didn't hesitate for a second to accept her offer to accompany my brother. Besides that a great pixel artwork. :)
try to find an older copy. VHS or early DvD. George Lucas loved cutting the old SW so much that he did it over and over again for almost every new release, tinkering and adding sometimes blatantly unnecessary fluff.
BJG, HELLO THERE! I was wondering where our May 4th/star wars 2024 upload was, so as usual - A surprise, to be sure, but a welcome one! I'm already loving this, and how Obi Wan's padawan braid is also a convenient mug handle. You've often replied on several of my posts, esp star wars, its just great that you engage, and seeing your improvements is a joy. PS. i was there... opening night in June 1999 for TPM midnight screening (In Australia, still have the tix stub!) , always been a fan.
Oh hey dude! - didn't recognize you at first with the new profile pic - but now that I know I'll continue to watch your career with great interest. And yeah I decided to let May 4th roll by in lieu of the TPM anniversary date! That's awesome you still have the ticket; kinda wish I hung onto mine 😅
@@BJGpixel I have once again been touched by royalty. avatar change to something toon , amazing recall. This poster was so good. Id love to see more, like maybe video game box art, in something like classic cyberpunk / noir palettes
awe i love your perspective on all the nostalgia for us kids who grew up with the prequels! it made me smile. this is a horribly unpopular opinion, but attack of the clones is actually my favorite star wars movie!
Wow, beautiful choice of colors at the end. I am also learning about pixel art but in a different way, I paint acrylic on canvas, water color, graphite and charcoal pictures but I love the patterns that can be created with triangles and pixels and so my style is like - well, I flow between different styles in a single picture, thereby it is like a single brush painting several styles as the eye flows around the picture. One time I had a moment where it felt like I saw everything at the same time and it was an unusual situation where everything was fractal and had hyper dimensions where an object is inside another object. And so I took that experience and tried to understand what I was looking at, and that led me to some ideas about what existence is made of, so I try to paint what I saw and I like pixels because in an artwork, there is a point where the human eye can no longer see detail, and at that point, it looks messy if the information isn't clear, and so by using pixels as my smallest units in an artwork, it allows me to create patterns that flow over every object in the scene so that all things appear unique but connected at the same time.
I can relate. Phantom Menace was my first new Star Wars movie, and it really stuck for me, one of my favorites! My favorite part is the Droid army, I just love how snarky the Battle Droids are, even if that's more a later mvoies thing, the Droidekas are awesome, and I love that the Droid Fighters are their own characters.
That shame some fans put under after episode 1 was intense. I hope we get to see people lay off the newer movies eventually too. I was already loving this poster, but when you did the coloring, it reached an absolute higher level. Great work.
8:30 the opposite color actualy works well when you consider the possibility of contrast it gave you (eg. Darth Maul being red on a blue background and the jedi holding the light sabers against the red background)
Really great pixel art of the greatest Star Wars movie in my opinion. Heh heh. I really liked the music used for the Final Artwork segment. Did you make it or something?
excellent piece! i always loved the phantom menace too. between the prequels and the rereleases and the shadows of the empire campaign, it was just a good time to be a star wars kid in the late 90s / early 00s

Enjoyed TPM (and the trilogy) as a kid. 10 years later, i found out a lot of people hated it. Didn't get it. 15 years after that, i still don't get why a lot of people hated it. The movies still hold up to this day. Honestly. Anyway, love the piece, BJG!
