What is Direct Mount? Shimano Direct Mount and the RD-R8000

  • What is 'direct mount' and what if I don't need it or don't have a compatible hangar?
    Spoiler alert: you have to accept Shimano's rig-job.
    I want to be very clear about something I skipped over in the video:
    Direct mount doesn't just move the derrelaiur back, but it moves it out too. This is why you are stuck with the e-link. Removing the e-link would move the mech way too close in to the cassette and it won't work.
    Hope that makes sense.

    Okay, to be clear, when Shimano came out with this new shadow style derailleur, they also wanted to issue their own hanger standard to go with it going forward for all new bikes. The B link you are talking about was put there by Shimano to allow for BACKWARD compatibility with current bikes, until manufacturers could design Shimano’s new direct mount hanger standard into their bikes. Sounds great except the bike builders didn’t do it. Even now only a few bike companies are designing their frames with direct mount hangers. When this is done the whole arrangement is very solid and helps for even better shifting. Personally I don’t think it’s a great idea. In the past a hanger was the weak point and if something needed to bend or break it was the hanger. Well guess what, a direct mount hanger is so stiff and strong that should there be a problem where you drop the bike or the chain wraps up, that direct mount hanger is likely to not break and it will either destroy your derailleur, or damage the frame at the drop out, or both. Be glad you have a standard hanger and that B link. This may be why most bike makers didn’t adopt Shimano’s direct mount standard.

    FINALLY - someone addressed the question - the difference between direct mount and standard. All other videos are just saying - remove it if you have troubles with shifting, if you have direct mount...etc. - but nobody actually explains the difference. Thanks for the video.
    Btw - I never even had this problem, but was genuinely curious as some shops are offering rear derailleur without the link itself.

      Thanks. What's worse is that you can't use the mech without the link... It won't align at all. So we are stuck with it.

    Thanks for a clear explanation of what Direct Mount actually is and what it entails. Lots of muddy explanations out there in TH-camland, but yours nailed it!

      it's SURPRISINGLY hard to find a clear explanation in google searches.
      why do english speaking people name their stuff the way they do. so confusing.

    Wow! Thank you. I can't believe it was so hard to find a video or webapge that actually explains this simply and clearly. What dumb name for a simple concept.

    The amount of play you are referring to at the rear most pivot is still going to be there when bolted to a direct mount hanger. The forward attachment is solid and there shouldn’t be any play in it so I don’t see what would be accomplished except for your hanger is more flexible that a DM hanger, which is where the improvement in shifting would come from, but at the risk of causing damage to your frame should something go wrong. Pro bike teams don’t care if the derailleur gets ripped from the bike and takes the hanger and frame with it. Everyday users will care and would much rather have the hanger bend or break instead of damaging the dropout area of the frame.

    standard - the bracket is more forward than direct mount. thus it has a "b link" to bridge the fore-rear gap. That introduces an extra joint, which can accrue slack.
    direct mount - the bracket is more rear, and so the b-link is not necessary and eliminated, making it more "direct", hence the name.

      So he did it wrong, right? As the document I've read, b-link is supposed to be removed?

    Good video, thanks. I generally have huge respect for Shimano engineering. I'm stunned that Shimano would offer such a flawed assembly.

    I’ve been googling for couple hours today trying to understand direct mount vs standard mount, the terms are very confusing, like you said it has nothing to do with how it’s actually mounted to the hanger or frame but the position of the derailleur when mounted. Here is what I learned. 1. Direct mount derailleur on direct mount hanger, they are designed for each other so it’s actually a direct mount and position is right at where the derailleur is designed for 2. Standard mount derailleur can only work with a standard mount hanger because it would not shift properly when you mount a standard derailleur to work in a direct mount derailleur position 3. Direct mount derailleur on a standard hanger, you need a b-link to mount the derailleur at the correct position. So lesson learned, it has nothing to do with mounting but position of the installed derailleur. Confusing?

    Six of one; half dozen of another. I haven't seen a direct mount rear derailleur on a road bike since the steel frame days. The replaceable derailleur hanger is there to protect the frame in the event of a crash, like the one I had last year that fubar'd my hanger and my ultegra 6800 rear derailleur. I replaced it with the 8000. I would rather have had the 6800 bc that system was damn near perfect, but obviously not crash-proof. 😂

    frustrating really, I would love to convert to direct mount but there simply aren't any manufacturers making compatible hangers. That B-link seems redundant. good info, thanks!

    • @poorpossum79
      @poorpossum79  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree. There are so many hangar types tho, it's almost understandable why there aren't many options... But you would think big manufacturers would have a solution...

    i think the information in this video is partially wrong. i dont know about the rd-r8000 but the rd-m8100 is direct mount and its supposed to go on the conventional standard mount hanger - "directly", without the b-link.

    You don't say what kind of bike you have, but I was looking at the Wheels Manufacturing site, and they make a dozen or so direct mount hangers covering bikes from Merckx, Pinarello, Scott, Specialized, Giant, GT, Marin, and Cannondale. Maybe...

    Anyone know if this B link can be replaced with a normal derailleur extender like the wolf tooth? Any advice would be appreciated as I have a direct mount rear mech that I need to mount on a normal hanger , thanks in advance

    • @poorpossum79
      @poorpossum79  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unlikely. The direct system also moves the derailleur out as well as back. A regular extender probably just moves it back.

    • @stinkyfinn6977
      @stinkyfinn6977 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@poorpossum79 yes I understand that but my bike hasent a direct mount drop out and the deralier hasn't got the B link to compensate for that so my thoughts will one of those wolftooth/goatsleg/road links serve that purpose instead, of the shimano part , if you understand ?

      @@MrMpow3r it's removable but if you remove it you can't use the derailleur as it is then incorrectly positioned on the lateral plane (hope that makes sense!!!) - this is something I wish I had included in this video

      @@poorpossum79 aah yes, I had another look at the pics I have and you're right.
      What if you used an ultegra 6800 derralieur, they are 11 speed too and don't have that extra pivot point so crisper shifting and lighter if you're a weight weenie.
