This weekend I'm bringing you into the Chippawa National Forest near Walker Minnesota. With the Independence Day weekend upon us I was not expecting to have such a beautiful lakeside retreat all to ourselves. I knew if I was going to find a spot I would have to go where others are not willing to travel. The trail into this campsite is a few miles long. Its full of potholes, hills, rutted tracks and super narrow passageways. I was at this campsite over a year ago. I almost got stuck when the truck slid off the crest of the road while maneuvering a sharp downhill curve. I was so excited when I reached the lake to find completely empty. There was a loon splashing in the water as I pulled in, I think it was greeting me. (You can see it in the video.)
Friday night felt magical. I was completely alone with sounds of frogs and a single loon to great me. The sunset looked like god created the perfect painting and I was part of the canvas. It was not long before Minnesota reminded me that nothing is easy. The deerflies and mosquitoes were thick! You can see a wood tick had found its place on my neck in the video as well. That was really fitting as the name of the main road entering the forest from the highway is called "Wood Tick Trail".
The remainder to the weekend went really well. Saturday around 11am a thunderstorm rolled through. The weather channel was calling for it, but not until 3pm. We had a few claps of lightning and a lot of thunder. It only rained for an hour or so. Later that afternoon I made the best tasting cheese steak sandwich I'd ever ate. I put up the game trail camera Saturday night but did not capture any wild animals coming to visit. I hope one day to see a big black bear strolling through, that would be so cool. I'd be happy to capture any wildlife on camera, well, anything other than a skunk.
Sunday, I had the opportunity to take out the kayak. I got into the middle of the lake when I noticed I was taking on water. I had two GoPro's and my drone with. I was concerned about losing my equipment, but I needed to capture enough video to tell my story. It was more challenging than it looked as I had to take the kayak out multiple times in order to capture video from inside the kayak and along the shoreline. My bottom half got completely soaked. I was thankful the crack in the boat did not open up more than it had. I could have easily sunk if the plastic seam opened any further. Shortly after that the storm rolled in. I made my way out of the forest just in time. On the drive home rain was coming down in sheets! It was almost impossible to see at times, cars were stopped under overpasses to wait out the storm. But we eventually got home safe and sound.
Thanks for hanging out with Toby and me this weekend, I hope you enjoyed it! Next weekend my daughter, Adelle, has her high school graduation party. I won't be recording a video Saturday or Sunday. But I'm still going to try to make a camping video.... you will have to tune in next week to see what I have planned!

Just got the bogus request in the form of a comment reply to "... take this talk off of TH-cam..." If these scammers, who are obviously intelligent enough to devise these plots, would use their smarts and just half the energy they put into these scams to do something productive.... this would be such a better world.

Kenny, besides the obvious, I have always noticed and liked how clean and neat you are. I recently unsubscribed from two channels because of how dirty those creators lived. There is no excuse when there is plenty of water available in having dirty bodies, pets, floors, windows, etc. Cleanliness is next to Godliness. Glad you found such a beautiful campsite, especially on the weekend of the 4th. Stay safe and God bless you always.
I agree Kate. I recently unsubscribed a homestead TH-camr because his house and grounds were full of junk. And he has kids around all that dangerous trash! Kenny amazes me how he cleans up camp sites that other people trash!

We left it at our campsite on the picnic table until we left the next day to put in the dumpster (it was full of ants)

Took the words right out of my mouth. I live ‘rough’ like all the time. Lost my house in an overnight electrical fire 😪 BUT, me and my dog put a camper in to do the gardens, lawn care and she was in heet and my sons two makes get a tad noisy and it being an apartment 🥴 it was just SO good to be back HOME. Wasn’t just the house that was home. It’s HERE…. I’m pretty much in the woods and LOVE it. Just so quiet ♥️ And can see the stars 🤗 No choice but to live in town after the fire, could NOT see the stars at all. LOVE this channel. ♥️♥️

Thank you so much. I appreciate your generosity. I picked up a trail camera a few weeks back with the super thanks. Now I'm now going to be picking up a new action camera. The stabilization of the go pro is really good, but the camera doesn't recognize you are panning from left to right. Instead, it sees it as a shake and tries to keep the footage stable. That leads to most panning shots looking choppy.....I hope that makes sense....So I'm gonna move to the DJI Pocket 3. I'm hoping the larger sensor provides better lowlight footage, and the picture will look better. I really appreciate the support for the channel.
Kenny loves to weed wack and clean up these camp sites. These videos are very calming they are almost ASMR for me.
Watching this on Friday because of recovering from Beryl. Got power, kind of have internet & a Kenny video to watch. Doesn't even matter my yard looks like Paul Bunyon had a temper tantrum.😊

So i had a few scary moments in this one. I freaked out when the kayak started taking on water cos i'm thinking to myself there's no one else in sight. Also, that storm scared me and i was praying you made it out without the so called "roads" being rutted out. Jeez, the freaking adventures you go through to help us on the other end get through our week. Thank you so much for the consistency and amazing quality production. It is DEFINITELY worth it for me to stay tuned and watch every Tuesday ☺

My grandparents had a cabin about 15 or 20 minutes outside of Hackensack back in the 80's...The thing i remember most was the Loons in the early morning....one of these trips out could you capture that?? It's so soothing to listen to them in the morning...You in the rack, with those birds calling would show everyone just how magical a thing it is....!

If you have to camp at a Walmart parking lot it's best to park close to other RV's. Another option is the parking lot of a casino. Some do have RV parking areas with electric/water hookups and laundry facilities, which is nice! You must have great mud tires to be driving those water ponds, especially when it rains! That steak fajita cheesesteak looked yummy! Thanks for sharing!

I am a new subscriber to your site. You do a terrific job presenting the great outdoors. At 74 yrs. old I want to tell you I feel great watching your videos and without sounding corny I feel the casting of each line ( in your camping at a rest stop ) and when you walk your dog Toby through the woods, and so many other adventurers you show each and every time. I was born and lived in Minnesota until I was 18 ( off to Vietnam ). I do not live there anymore but return to gladly visit family and friends. Thank you for providing a great adventures to so many of us.

I’m glad you didn’t go for an unplanned swim! I’m signed up for a stand up paddleboard lesson in a few weeks. If I like it, I might get an inflatable one next year. Getting out on the water looks like fun!
My daughter has the stand-up boards and loves them. She floats down the Mississippi for miles. She prefer them to kayaks or tunes.

This video is so great. When I was younger and more durable I could leave work and venture out Friday evening. 90% of the time I would end up someplace in the North Country. Then Sunday evening back home arriving in the wee hours of the morning while showing my job on time at 6am. Well as an old guy I can't toletate that any more. Thanks to your vids it's like I am back in the Northwoods again ... Even the feelings are back. Thank you Kenny for doing these vids.

I spent the fourth boondocking just outside the North Rim Grand Canyon NTL park, 8500 ft above sea level.
The fly's and the mouths were insane.
They didn't bite much but still drove us crazy.
We had fun regardless.
I have recently switched to a slide in camper and I have to thank you for your channel.

That was an especially relaxing trip to nature, as we are currently 'camping' at home after being in the bullseye of Hurricane Beryl. Minor damage, tree limbs and fences down, and my camper was slapped around , but nothing we haven't done before. It took 2 days just to remove debris from the door-side of the camper to get into it. So much for using it as a 'survival capsule'. Another learning lesson... and just now, the electricity is back!

Thank you for another great video! Watching always makes me feel so calm and brings back so many good memories of Minnesota. Those deer flies are vicious! And the itch? Horrible. When I was about 12 or 13 or so, I was about to dive off of a swimming raft. I took a huge breath and swallowed a deer fly. I had never seen my Mom jump in the water and get to me so fast! By the time she stuck her fingers down my throat, and I threw the fly up, it was already dead. I am forever grateful for strong stomach acids. I still shudder thinking about it.
I whole heartly agree! Once when up north, tried to go Blueberry picking. But, had to leave cause they were so bad. Where we went swimming, in the lake by our cabin, we had huge black flies. And their bite was worse then the deer flies. And you couldn't tell they were biting you, until too late!! If you dived under the water, they right there when you came up, ready to bite you again! Never left you one!! LOL😮

Kenny, ditch that white salt and get a pink Himalayan salt grinder. You’ll be amazed how that one thing brings out flavor in meats.
What a great video. Love Tobys ears flapping as he walks along. And that sandwich was awesome. Loved the lightening bolt and glad you made it back to shore afyer the leak. Ill bet flex seal can take care of the leak.
Perhaps you should get a water proof envelope to put your phone and camera in if you are ever concerned they might get ruined by the water. I know you keep them out to film but better safe and dry and just a shorter video than at the bottom of a lake. Take care.

Toby Cam! Philly Cheese Steak and almost a short version of Das Boot. A weekend out in the woods beats a weekend in a hotel/motel with nothing going on except stair races from kids. I'm thinking we need to start a Go Fund Me for Toby so he can go on an Alaskan trip! /grin Yes...I'm keeping the pressure on.

It's a mixture of pine, ash, birch. I'd love to get a cord of hard wood delivered to the house and use that instead.
One of the many great things about Minnesota is all the State Parks you have there and how well they are constructed and maintained!! Minnesota is smart to do such a great job with taxpayer $$$$ when it comes to their State Parks!!

I was thinking about your electronic gear in the kayak… I’d suggest taking a couple of gallon sized zip lock bags with you. That way if you do ever have a major issue on the water, you can seal ‘em inside so they stay high and dry.
The zip lock bag is a great idea. I'll have to do more Toby Cam. We can see the campsite through his eyes.
