I left the Methodist Church when I was a teenager as well as my siblings because of a supernatural occurrence that could not be explained or even believed by the Methodist pastor. I found the Methodists I knew were good people with good manners, good covered dishes, and choir specials but nothing about grace, prayer, or anything supernatural, like a really nice social club.

Methodist wasn't intended suppose to be a church per se but rather accompany inside the Anglican church - John Weasley didn't want to have a another "church" he thought there was already enough denominations as it was and didn't want to split Christianity any further.
Doctrine wise there is no difference between Anglican and Methodist because it wasn't a doctrine issue rather a missionary issue with Americans being clergymen.
Secondly through prayer and Bible studies with one another was emphasis of Methodist in earnest days.
That's how they got the name Methodist that's why when go to any traditional Methodist church you'll commonly see prayer hands together and Bible open flat images on any newsletter 🙏

Certainly in the 18th Century, the poor were not welcomed in traditional Anglican Churches. They had no Sunday Best and were looked down upon. This was why John Wesley preached in the open air so that Christ's message could reach everyone, but particularly those who were not considered 'good enough' for a Church. That was one of the key attractions for me.

homosexuality wasn’t even mentioned in the bible until the 1940s and even if it is a “sin” in gods eyes it shouldn’t change anything about us loving our neighbors and treating people how we would want to be treated and leaving any “judging” to God and no one else. who has a TH-cam channel by the name "Gregg Jackson." I plead with you brothers and sisters to go watch some of this man's videos. For 33 years, my whole life, I thought I knew what the Gospel was and I thought I was saved, well sort of ... most of the time I was living in fear actually sad to say. What if I wasn't "truly" saved...? The devil was able to control me through fear of the possibility of losing my salvation. What if I get left behind in the rapture...? All along I know realize I was living and believing in a false gospel . I was Actually indoctrinated with Calvinism teaching. Salvation is in Faith alone in Christ alone. In that moment you put your faith in Jesus alone You are now sealed and sanctified by the Holy Spirit, nothing can ever separate you from the love that is in Christ Jesus. Now that is the "good News" of the True Gospel ! What Joy it brings!!🙏👏 Hallelujah

There are probably as many ways of explaining John Wesley's doctrine of sanctification as there are methodist and holiness denominations. I'm not a methodist and my parents and grandparents were not methodists but, from my limited exposure to methodist doctrine (reading all of my Free Methodist brother-in-law's seminary textbooks), it seems to me that at least some methodists believe sanctification is not achieved, it is received, It is God's gift to believers - not our gift to him. Is there a single source that compares various methodist/ holiness denominations' various ways of explaining Wesley's doctrine - a source that can be perused in forty hours or less?
P.S. I have a rather strong preference for old methodist hymns (and other hymns of a similar style) especially when they are sung in four-part harmony. I sure hope there will be a place in heaven where that kind of music is allowed.

The seminary where he studies was operated by the Nazarenes and they weren't Calvinist either. The first comment is a lie. John Wesley founded the entire denomination on his beliefs that his "Entire sanctification" was "full salvation" or the "full gospel" compared to other denominations at the time when it was actually just classic perfectionist heresy. He also believed in salvation by works, that if you committed any sin, including doubt, you immediately lost your salvation and must re-repent.

Although my family belonged to a UMC congregation, I told my dad that I considered myself a Christian who just happened to feel comfortable in a Methodist church. He said that was a sign of a Methodist. For a few years, my wife and I continued to attend the Catholic church where she grew up, and her priest said, not as a put-down, that Methodism is a good denomination for people who like Catholicism but don’t want to be burdened with a lot of theology. We teach inclusion on things that are not essential, which is why, for example, we do not have an official belief as to Mary being a virgin, let alone perpetual virginity, and we recommend abstinence from alcohol but do not require it. The schism that I think is coming may be the least bad way to preserve the things I like within the two groups.

I was born in an Orthodox sosciety but never fully agreed with its practices and beliefs about certain things (like praying to saints and Mary, the icons in the churches, the leturgical nature of worship instead of a more personal one, the belief that certain physical objects can have the presence of God in them etc etc...) I'm now doing some research into different christian denominations and I'm astonished at how much the Methodist denomination agrees with the core of what I believe and also experience in my life as a new-born christian (after spending most of my life as an atheist because I was raised by atheist parents lol)! @diogenesofsinope5358 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1. Well, we don't pray to the wood that makes up the icons we pray to what those icons represent. And that's why icons are mostly copied and re-drawn rather than there being a "freedom of expression " kind of thing. They contain various symbols and meanings rather than just being paintings. But I get where you're coming from ,there was even a heretical movement in orthodoxy that wished to abolish icons but they failed.
      2. We do not pray to saints instead of praying to God, but we refer to the saints as well as praying to God because we believe that Christ conquered the power of death, and that the saints are therefore alive in God and living members of the Church. As such, we ask them for their help and prayers for us.
      3. Mary is holy, the holiest of all the Saints and all the Angels, since she gave birth to Jesus and stayed by his side till the very end. And so that's why we also refer to Mary while praying to God, we believe her to be a living member of the church; Theotokos, Bogorodica.
      4. Ofcourse we celebrate God, he is the Creator and we are his creation. He created us, he gave us life. but there is also a personal side to it. We see God as a father figure who loves and weeps for every single one of us and so every one of us has a personal relationship with him in that sense, after all he even created our bodies in his own image. But it must be known that a father figure is a figure that should be loved, respected and also celebrated. ( I don't like the meaning of the English word " worship" , I'd much rather use the slavic word " slaviti Boga" which would mean "to celebrate God" and is much more widely used especially with slavic Christians.
      5. I'm not sure to what exactly you are referring to when saying that orthodoxy believes that "certain objects can have the presence of God in them" ?

    • @rogermetzger7335
      @rogermetzger7335 ปีที่แล้ว

In the lowercase sense of the word, "methodist", there are several methodist denominations including the Free Methodists, the Wesleyans and the Nazarenes. Other organizations that are (in some ways) similar are the Salvation Army and Seventh-day Adventists. Half of the people who voted to adopt the name, Seventh-day Adventist in 1860 were former methodists ("former" because they didn't agree with the post-millennialism that was popular among methodists in the nineteenth century). The organization they created was heavily influenced by John Wesley's theology. I've never encouraged anyone to "join" the Seventh-day Adventist organization but you might find that most adventists' beliefs and manner of conducting worship services are very similar to your own beliefs and worship preferences.

We are in favor ordaining both men and women as both are biblically sound, and we view homosexuality from a biblical perspective which includes inviting LGBTQ+ into our community as fellow Christians. We still however view that homosexual _acts_ (not including inclinations and natural orientation) are at the core incompatible with Christianity but that does not stop us from loving our gay community members and supporting them in their journeys of faith just as we would with any other Christian❤️❤️❤️

    New Covenant Whole Gospel:
Who is now the King of Israel in John 1:49? Is the King of Israel now the Head of the Church, and are we His Body? Why did God allow the Romans to destroy the Old Covenant temple and the Old Covenant city, about 40 years after His Son fulfilled the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34 in blood at Calvary?
What the modern Church needs is a New Covenant Revival (Heb. 9:10) in which members of various denominations are willing to re-examine everything they believe and see if it agrees with the Bible, instead of the traditions of men. We need to be like the Bereans. It will be a battle between our flesh and the Holy Spirit. It will not be easy. If you get mad and upset when someone challenges your man-made Bible doctrines, that is your flesh resisting the truth found in God's Word. Nobody can completely understand the Bible unless they understand the relationship between the Old Covenant given to Moses at Mount Sinai and the New Covenant fulfilled in blood at Calvary. What brings all local churches together into one Body under the blood of Christ? The answer is found below.
Let us now share the Old Testament Gospel found below with the whole world. On the road to Emmaus He said the Old Testament is about Him.
He is the very Word of God in John 1:1, 14. Awaken Church to this truth.
Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:
Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by husband unto them, saith the LORD:
Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.
Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
Is the most important genealogy in the Bible found in Matthew 1:1 (Gal. 3:16)? Is God's Son the ultimate fulfillment of Israel (John 1:49)? Why has the modern Church done a pitiful job of sharing the Gospel with modern Orthodox Jews? Why would someone tell them they are God's chosen people and then fail to share the Gospel with them? Who is the seed of the woman promised in Genesis 3:15? What did Paul say about Genesis 12:3 in Galatians 3:8, 3:16? Who is the "son" in Psalm 2? Who is the "suffering servant" of Isaiah 53? Who would fulfill the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34? Who would fulfill the timeline of Daniel chapter 9 before the second temple was destroyed? Why have we not heard this simple Old Testament Gospel preached on Christian television in the United States on a regular basis?
Once a person comes to understand the New Covenant promised to Israel and Judah in Jeremiah 31:31-34, which is found fulfilled by Christ during the first century in Hebrews 8:6-13, and Hebrews 10:16-18, and specifically applied to the Church in 2 Corinthians 3:6-8, and Hebrews 12:22-24, man-made Bible doctrines fall apart.
Let us now learn to preach the whole Gospel until He comes back. The King of Israel is risen from the dead! (John 1:49, Acts 2:36)
We are not come to Mount Sinai in Hebrews 12:18. We are come instead to the New Covenant church of Mount Zion and the blood in Hebrews 12:22-24.
1Jn 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.
1Jn 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.
1Jn 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.
The following verses prove the Holy Spirit is the master teacher for those now in the New Covenant.
Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.
Mar 1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.
Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
Act 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.
1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
1Jn 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

    I can answer that.
As none of us start out believing what the Bible says, one person is no different than any other. Methodists continue that though to believe that perpetual and intentional disbelief is okay. A true Christian is Bible believing and moves beyond sipping milk, but to be a Methodist, believing the Bible is entirely optional.

Okay, but are you 100% sure that if you died today you would go to heaven?
      Do you know Jesus Christ?
I am convinced that most people who call themselves "Christian" know religion instead of Jesus Christ. Or they have created their own God in their head. That is why we must make sure that we know the God of the bible and know that we are truly saved.
Lay religion, Christian culture, and even politics aside. Someone who truly loves you is reaching out to you not willing that you should perish (2 Peter3), but that you be saved from the price of your sins.
With that said, how do you deal with your sin? Yes you. How many times have you lied, lusted, or stolen? I'm guilty, what about you? I hope you feel convicted.
But if you're going to reject the free gift of salvation, you ought to think about where you are going after death.
      Is this your mindset?
      Luke 12:19
“And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry.”
Please please do not be this person that Jesus described here. I don't care how if you are in a ministry or even behind a pulpit. And their is no shame in getting saved.
      Matthew 7
21Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
You see there will be professing Christians that were not actually saved.
      I want to help you.
      Matthew 18:3
"And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven."
Because of God's holiness we cannot be in his presence as we are in our sin. No matter how righteous one may appear everyone has sinned and one sin can lead to hell, but there is a way out. We don't deserve it but God made a way that we may become the righteousness of God (Romans 5). I want you to have 100% assurance of salvation.
      Romans 3:23 - For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;
John 3:16 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
      John 14
6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
      Romans 6
23For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
1 John 1:9 - If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
      1Corinthians 15:
      1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;
2By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.
      3For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
4And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:
      Romans 10
9That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
10For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
11For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
12For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13For WHOSOEVER shall CALL upon the name of the Lord shall be SAVED.
Here is the gospel straight and simple:
      1. Truly acknowledge that you have sinned against a perfect God and you are worthy of hell that can only be saved by the blood of Jesus Christ
      2. Believe that Jesus died for and covered all of your sins and rose again.
      3. Say to God that Jesus Christ he is your saviour.
Please let me know. I am praying for you, today is the day of salvation.
      2 Corinthians 5:17
“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

How about just following the Word of God Almighty from cover to cover? Keep manmade doctrine out of it!
Mat 15:9 KJV But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
Joh 7:16 KJV Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me.
Joh 7:17 KJV If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself.
I will follow my Messiah's example and do the things He did. What did He do?
Joh 8:29 KJV And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.
Yeshua/Jesus always did those things that please the Father!
Now read His Book to know how to walk in His ways! Praying to the Father in Heaven that He will bring His people out of mystery Babylon and open their eyes and ears to the Truth! Time is short!

Amen.... someone told me today to look into Methodism and so I thought at first it sounded attractive, then my ears itched and I instantly thought "uh oh ...this could be absolutely rubbish" . I've noticed that it is mostly man made doctrines dressed as godliness but I'm gonna pray about it more too. Thanks for your comment. I was baptized in pentacostal , so lots of warfaring, speaking in tongues , witnessing the spiritual gifts and the casting out of evil spirits.... I love it and just want to find the right place for me. I want to worship God without man trying to tailor me instead.

What is the Methodist attitude re gay people?
From the look of the current "people leaving the Methodist Church" makes me feel that it is in the process of going back to its anti-gay roots.
Young people aren't exactly "breaking the doors down" to join any church because the issue re. gay people is important to them.
Churches should get their heads out of the scriptures and start seeing people through the lens of Jesus.

      Just to clarify!
I am an 88 year old gay man who grew up during a time when you hid if you were gay!
Fortunately, I will die knowing that maybe, . . . just maybe, . . . . gay people will be accepted for whom they are!
God created me to be gay! Period!
Yes, immorality is not acceptable for gay or straight people!
However, finding a partner to love is something straight and gay people need freedom to pursue!
Jesus would certainly agree with this!

Why should I choose Methodist? The speaker is talking about heritage, diversity. etc. Just shortly mentioning the word 'holiness" in "Discipline". I thought you would tell me about the difference with other Christian denominations as stressing the ministry of the Holy Spirit in giving me strength over sin via purifying my heart from the filthiness of selflove and other "self". Where is it today? Seems like you talk about the heritage having the form of it without the content. Sorry.

John Wesley was the greatest Christian leader? Wow, what a blind huge overstatement.
He was an Anglican priest. How closely do Methodists hold to Anglicanism? Barely. And the parts they do hold on to are today watered down and have been taken over by the culture of the day and Protestantism.
I was a youth pastor and we (me and our pastors) actually taught that Methodists were Protestant. That is a lie but Methodists don’t even know this.
Sacrament of Eucharist is pretended to be important by using old Catholic liturgy but it isn’t handled as anything important to Christians. Just something we do once a month (even though JW said to take it as often as you can because it is the body and blood of Christ).
My fellow Methodists, come back home to the Catholic Church where Truth lives.

@@slottibarfast5402 Ineould encourage you to look into what the Church has - since the beginning- taught about the Eucharist. From the New Testament in the Church has taught what Jesus says in John 6.
If Jesus said it, we ought to do it that way. This goes very deep. I encourage a deep study.
I never heard any great teaching about Eucharist in Methodism. Just one of many reasons I left and returned to the Catholic Church.

I was United Methodist for 20 years and a youth Pastor. While teaching a lesson series on Truth and what do we do when people don’t agree on what is true - I finally understood why we need a Pope.
Then I investigated how well the Catholic Church has held to the Christian doctrines from Jesus time, from the NT and OT and from the beliefs of the earliest Christians.
I was even expecting to see some great differences. I DIDNT. The beliefs are the same because like Paul and Peter and Ll if the original church they upheld God’s Truth rather than personal interpretation of scripture as a way to remain One Church with One doctrine.
No other church has or will ever do the same.

How do Methodists know that the Bible is inspired by God if they reject the authority of the Catholic church? Asking for a friend.

    • @TroySan1985
      @TroySan1985 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Because the Catholic church doesn't accept the authority of the Bible because of the compromises it's made. Also they are spoken of in Bible as against God. Where does it say we should pray to Mary or use rosary's....that's occultism right there. Not everyone who is part of the Catholic church falls into that, you genuinely find tongue speaking spirit filled Catholics that have found jesus and just so happen to be in that church. It's not at all teaching the goodness of God to the world.
