If it's ok to share Cool memories of our Dads, I was 7 years old and was "the wolf" in the little red riding hood school play. They needed an axe for the woodsman and they were going to make one out of toilet roll tubes and cardboard. My dad said he would make one at work. He didn't, he got the apprentice to, and made one with a full wooden handle and a wooden head that was painted gloss black with a silver bladed edge, and the handle was varnished. It looked like the real article. If you'd have seen the teachers freaking out as I walked into the school passed their particular class rooms with it over my shoulder. It was hilarious. They didn't see my mum behind me walking into the school. They just saw a seven year old casually carrying an axe into school
I met Marc Singer at Dragoncon a few years ago. Genuinely nice dude! He basically said he knew part 2 & 3 were terrible going in but felt a responsibility to the character and to all the people who would get work because of them.
I love this movie. My favorite part is how much it's structured like a video game. Every time I watch it, the video game beats and mechanics jump out to me. It has mini bosses, plus a huge last boss at the end. Why someone hasn't made this a killer game baffles me.

I have a friend of mine who says the same about quite a few movies from that time period. Movies like Rambo 2 and such. When he describe it, its always as a compliment. I've come to realize that these games starting with the NES took note from these movies and tried to mimic them in gameplay. Its a structure that continues into modern video games today. As for a Beastmaster video game, I definitely wouldn't say no to it. Sword and Sorcery is one of my favorite genres and games like Conan Exiles are some of my favorite. I've seen many games try a beastmaster concept, but never actually focused the entire game around it. So a Beastmaster game where the animals you use give different abilities and mechanics would be quite fun to play.

Conan is one of those movies that I keep trying to like, like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but just can't get into it. Beastmaster was great when I was 12 and when I was 52.

And those are just trumped by the more terrifying creatures with wings that will turn people into soup and bones. The protagonist was awesome. What kid didn't day dream about being able to talk to animals? The love interest was pretty damn hot and the side kicks, both human and animal, were great. Unfortunately it didn't age very well. Yeah man, the 80's were the best (or the worst lol) for fantasy movies. I was heavily into DnD and there was Beast Master, Ator the Fighting Eagle, The Sword and the Sorcerer, Conan, Highlander etc. 🤘😝🤘
Didn’t realize it until now, but I kind of lived out my Beastmaster fantasy. At one point, I was given a pair of ferrets from a co-worker whose new wife didn’t want them. At another, I volunteered at a big cat sanctuary and got to interact with over 60 of them. And one of my ultimate dreams, I did falconry. My highlight during that time was that I got to hunt with a golden eagle. I’ve always had a fascination and love for animals, and even did a few short animal documentaries on my channel. Lately, I decided to sort of spin that off to another channel that’s in the works. Some passions will always live on I guess… Oh and like the film, it seems like I’m always faced with budget cuts. 😋 It will be interesting to see if the franchise can be given new life since the creator has the rights back. Working with animals is always challenging, but I hope that with the advancements in technology a balance can be struck with utilizing the tech and still being able to have live animals utilized.
This was a frequent watch at my house, on The Beastmaster Station. On it's surface, it's a bit goofy, but there is actually a lot of things going on beneath the surface if you really pay attention.
I have only seen the original Beastmaster, it is a classic, until now I had no idea there were two more movies and a series... having seen this I have no wish to have my memories of this cool movie even more tainted.
Seriously, i used to watch this in the uk late night in the 80s. Talking about it decades later and no one believed it ever existed. I feel validated ❤😂❤
I rewatched a couple of months ago to see if it was still as fun as I remembered. It's a typical 80's fantasy action movie, but damn does it still hold up. I think the lack of crazy special effects helped a lot. Everything was practical and generally low-key. I have always wanted his little boomerang blade. I can never remember what it's called. I always thought that was the coolest thing ever. Almost on-par with a lightsaber for me.
Great movie and one I used to watch on TV, cable and VHS constantly. I give you kudos for being more informative with the history than others who have done videos of this movie.
Great over view of what happened to the Beastmaster and it's Franchise, keep up making these videos. Speaking of BeasterMaster, I wonder if they will have Remaster Beastmaster 2 and 3 and put them on bluray? Those 2 movies I feel have been lost in time and are still stuck on old VHS and Laserdisc, we need a remaster, I think.
I was a big fan of Andre Norton and loved her book The Beastmaster, so when I saw this film in the cinema, I was amazed she didn't get a credit because it totally ripped off her characters. No internet back then so I'd always wondered what the story behind that was.
She had them remove her name because the tiger died from the dye they used. I loved the books especially the later ones she wrote before she passed away. I like that she included a female beast master for Hosteen to interact with.
@@ericsteel173 Have you read the other three in the series? Yeah I wish they would make a movie or series true to the books. Or even movies based on some of her other novels like the Gryphon trilogy.

14:00 I was 10 yoa in in 1983 and had HBO. I can't even count how many times I watched this film and loved it! It is so good and while I understand Dan's reluctance to the Conan comparison, BM was a kid friendlier introduction to sword and sorcery for many in my generation. Those monsters with the wings and eat people by wrapping their wings around them was such a cool and frightening concept to me as a kid.
I remember this movie back in the day.I was bummed when one of the ferrets sacrificed it self. Also those creature people that liquefied people to death if people ran into them. The sights and sounds still make my skin crawl. What a gruesome way to go.
Without a shadow of a doubt my favourite movie as a kid…….hard to believe it’s over 40 years old and still holds its own. Had the creators not lost the original we would probably have a remastered version now
As someone else mentioned this movie was on heavy rotation on HBO in the '80s. I spent a lot of time at a friend's house who had HBO and it seemed like it was on 24/7. I also remember that as a kid it creeped me out enormously. I guess mission accomplished?
I really like this movie and it's sequel as kid and honestly it was the first high fantasy story I watched with my mother then she put on Wizards and it was over, I was sold on high fantasy.
My credit on Beastmaster was Asst. Production Designer. I designed all the sets that were on the Van Nuys warehouse "sound stage". (Tunnels, pods forest, dungeon, etc.) William Strom designed all the Semi-Valley location village sets and pyramid human sacrifice set. The wide shot of the village on the hill across from Marc Singer's (Dar) was a forced perspective miniature about 20 ft ahead of Marc's point of view. It was so real looking that when you were standing in front of it, it STILL looked like it was on the hill across the valley! It was John Alcott's last picture before he passed away. He did not use a light meter to check the F-stop for the camera, he used an old Polaroid black & white camera. If It look right, that was what they set for the camera. He was amazing to watch. As you may know, if you dim a stage light's voltage, it changes the color temperature to a warmer fire light or candle light look. I watch him use a flash light while walking just out of frame with Marc so that his face could be seen on film moving in the dark. The reason I am taking the time to write is because it was a wonderful time to be working on films like this with people like Mr. Alcott. (He won an Oscar for Barry Lyndon)That time of miniatures instead of CGI today, practical locations instead of stage blue screen and so on. I wish there were more You Tube videos for young people to learn how films were made in the golden era of "Hollywood". You can still use your talent and ingenuity and inexpensive 4K cameras to make films that look like you spent millions to do so. Sadly, a lot of that talent on Beastmaster and others like it have passed on, with only a few of us sharing the stories of behind the scenes. Marc was a great guy to be around. I am glad he is still with us.
Ferrets are very cute , but they smell horrible. No matter how clean you keep your house and your ferrets , you can smell them as soon as you walk in .
Somewhere buried in a box in the back of the basement has to be our totally worn out copy of The Beastmaster on VHS recorded from HBO. This movie was on permanent repeat in our house 40 years ago - and now i feel really old!!!
This was one of my favorite movies back in the 80's when I was a kid. I doubt I would enjoy it now but I have not watch it in over 35 years. Oh yeah, Beastmaster and Never Ending Story was another one that brings back great memories of a time where life was much easier....
Regardless of special effects or editing, this movie is great! Set the stage for many other movies of that time and later decades. Mark and Tanya are great in it. One of the best movies of the 80s.
I have a Rolodex in my head of the first dozen movies my family rented for our first VHS machine(waaayyy before Blockbuster lol) I remember seeing the artwork on the case and knew this was going to be awesome!
I loved this movie on showtime or Cinemax in the 80s growing up. I’d get the old zenith warmed up, pull the cable change with its 50 fr cord over to the couch, slide the channel changer to 22 or 23 wherever the movie channel was at….and let her rip. Usually hoping to hit the movie before the intro scene for Tanya’s character coming out of the pond! Good stuff….throw in the power to see through animal eyes and the weird dudes who had the chains with a claw gizmo on it who would hang themselves at rip torn’s blink of an eye and voila. Instant classic.
I remember watching Beastmaster and Krull at a friends house some time back around 1984-85 or so when I was in my early teens. I think my friend had taped it to vhs from some sort of satellite channel. This was back when in Sweden we only had the two state owned channels, and that's it. I don't think there were any satellite broadcasting that were specifically aiming at a Swedish audience. So I think the reception was pretty patchy, and maybe it only worked at some hours of the day. There was never any Swedish subtitles on the stuff my friend had taped off of that satellite feed, so we didn't really understand much of the dialogue. But luckily these movies weren't really like they were written by Shakespeare anyways. I remember thinking the movie was pretty cheesy, but it still stuck with me (as did Krull) and I kinda liked it. I think the main actor was the guy that would be the hero in the tv series "V" with the alien lizards a few years later.
I remembered Beastmaster as a great movie. I loved watching it as a kid. I loved the Conan movies too, but both movies had a different feeling, enough (even as a kid) that I never thought they were "copying" each other.

Now where to find this so I go down memory lane?! Loved this growing up and many memories of watching this with my mother, brother and grandfather. :)
Some passions will always live on I guess…
Oh and like the film, it seems like I’m always faced with budget cuts. 😋 It will be interesting to see if the franchise can be given new life since the creator has the rights back. Working with animals is always challenging, but I hope that with the advancements in technology a balance can be struck with utilizing the tech and still being able to have live animals utilized.
Did you end up with a hottie like Tanya Roberts too? That would be the cherry on top.
Beastmaster has long been one of my favorite movies. I didn't realize there were sequels. I'll need to check them out.
Delighted to see a video on this movie. An all time favourite of mine from when I was a child. Still have a massive soft spot for it.
0:32 omfg, phantasm scared the hell out of me as a kid. I don't think any other movie has ever terrified me that much.
This was a frequent watch at my house, on The Beastmaster Station. On it's surface, it's a bit goofy, but there is actually a lot of things going on beneath the surface if you really pay attention.
This was the movie for an 80's kid , watched it 100 times, scared me to death but i watched it , RIP Koto or was it Poto
It was amazing it got a PG rating, Showed how far they could go back then!
One of the coolest sword and sorcerer movies from the 80's ... great movie
Today I learned that Don Coscarelli made Phantasm, my favorite horror movie from childhood, and The Beastmaster.
LOVED this show as a kid. Those bereserker thing freaked me OUT!
I was a big fan of Andre Norton and loved her book The Beastmaster, so when I saw this film in the cinema, I was amazed she didn't get a credit because it totally ripped off her characters. No internet back then so I'd always wondered what the story behind that was.
The book was great. I always wanted a version that was true to the book.
@@Poizenne I read a sequel, I don’t remember the name. I didn’t know there were more than 2.
@@ericsteel173 Lord of Thunder was the first. Then she collaborated with another author to make a trilogy. So there are actually 5 in total not 4 like I originally thought.
Since then I've seen 2000 people die in films, but no death was as sad as the ferret. Especially because the other ferret was sad.
All of this 100 percent
Best movie ever!!! I used to watch this as a kid all the time. This movie FREAKING ROCKS! Todo and Podo??
Love this flick, wish I could get a good bluray copy.
I literally still have the original beta max copy. No machine.....but still the tape.
I loved this film when it came out. I watched it on cable at least 50 times and loved it every time.
I met Marc Singer at GenCon a number of years ago. He was a very cool dude.
The tree guys were some of the coolest things ever. As a kid they freaked me out!! But the blue eyed masked berserkers were pretty awesome too!!
Watched this SOOOO many times on HBO as a kid 😊
Classic. Truly blessed to have grown up at this time with so much food for the imagination. ❤
I remember watching this movie. I loved it as a kid. 😊
It would have played on HBO for one month, about 3 times per day tops. What's creepy about it?
Amazing movie from my youth, I was tracking down a laserdisc copy of it, only last week 😅
And Tanya Roberts was such a babe
Really interesting stuff!
I was a ferret owner from 1986 to 2018. Ferrets are very smart and can be trained to do lots of tricks.
Ferrets are very cute , but they smell horrible. No matter how clean you keep your house and your ferrets , you can smell them as soon as you walk in .
@@jamesstewart3771 This is the price we must pay for cute kleptomaniac kittens that never grow up and love to bust a move.
Somewhere buried in a box in the back of the basement has to be our totally worn out copy of The Beastmaster on VHS recorded from HBO. This movie was on permanent repeat in our house 40 years ago - and now i feel really old!!!
This movie had parts that scared the soul out of me
The Mothmen were just AWESOME 🕳️💩🦫🥃
It was a great movie back in the day. For a fun adventure it did what it was supposed to.
Love this breakdown, thanks for sharing
How gorgeous was Tanya Roberts
Pretty damn gorgeous
I had so much fun watching this film as a kid. I dug the TV series too.
The tigers look like tigers. Stripes and all. Dirty tigers are still tigers😂
I burst out laughing when I saw the “panther”. It’s so obviously a tiger lol
This is my favorite movie of all time. Yes, even above Star Wars. Just watched it a couple weeks ago.
I’ll never get bored of The Beastmaster, for the typical 80s fantasy trope, it was a bit ahead of it’s time. The casts was perfect imo.
Good Popcorn flick. Some sword play, some comedy, animals running around, some Sorcery and Tania Roberts in her swim wear.
I LOVED Beastmaster when i was a kid and i think it still hold up today. I cant express my disapointment with the second movie and the TV show.
This was one of my favorite movies back in the 80's when I was a kid. I doubt I would enjoy it now but I have not watch it in over 35 years.
Oh yeah, Beastmaster and Never Ending Story was another one that brings back great memories of a time where life was much easier....
You should go back and watch it now I think you’d still enjoy it. It holds up pretty well, I own it on dvd and still watch it from time to time.
This was one of my favorite movies as a kid. Haven't seen this in at least 30 years.
I feel so old now. Both the show and the movie was amazing back in the day.
I remembered Beastmaster as a great movie. I loved watching it as a kid. I loved the Conan movies too, but both movies had a different feeling, enough (even as a kid) that I never thought they were "copying" each other.
Marc singer did a incredible TV series called The V it was on regular TV along with a lot of other celebrities like Faye Grant great movie TV series!
