Same here! That scene is just about perfect! It scared me as a kid but as an adult who LOVES movies, I'm able to really appreciate the Amazing acting and direction. Stop motion may be laughed at these days but it still seems more real than the CGI S*** in the remake.
I had the honour of meeting Ray Harryhausen back in 2002. He was receiving an honorary doctorate the same year I graduated from the film design course I’d been on. His influence & impact on film VFX can never be overlooked; not forgotten.
I grew up with this movie, and as a kid, the way they did stop motion for medusa is absolutely to this day the single most scariest thing I have ever seen and still haunts me.😬😱
This movie will always hold a very special place in my heart. When I watch it, for some reason I don't see cheesy effects, blue screen or wires. What I see is the same thing my 10 year old eyes saw: A fantastical masterpiece.
Yup. The Harryhausen effects have far more personality than the most detailed CGI. I can totally look past the stop-motion effects without losing immersion in the story.
@@bjornskivids Harryhausen would be proud of recent stop motion movies like "The Boxtrolls" and "Kubo and the Two Strings" too. They have really raised the bar on what is possible with stop motion. And pretty much anything made by Aardman Animation ("Wallace and Gromit", "Chicken Run", "The Pirates!") oozes with personality too.
Well, you probably "don't see any cheesy effects" in THIS movie because there AREN'T ANY IN IT!! THIS flick has GOOD effects. Better than those stupid computer simulations that you see in every other movie made nowadays for damn sure.
In 1983 our school took us to the movies to watch this as a treat at the end of the schoolyear. I was 8 year old, and when Kalibos appeared I was terrified. That face with the horns was too much for me, I covered my eyes and it took the teacher a lot of persuading for me to open them again. I was enthralled by the creatures, they were the coolest creatures I had ever seen. I had fo watch the rest of the movie with my hands over my face ready to hide it as soon as Kalibos appeared. God memories...
When I was a kid, my father had a vast library of VHS cassettes. I often was sickly and had to stay home from school and kindergarden. My mother was a housewife so she would look after me here and there, but she was also busy with work around the house. So she would often park me in front of the tv and I would watch more and more of the movies my father had on cassette. Apart from the original Star Wars trilogy, films like Clash of the Titans, Conan and Beastmaster were the movies I grew up with. They hold many fond memories for me and I love them to this day!
It’s the classic bigger than life sized magnificent and famous sculpture of Perseus holding up the head of The Medusa that is in Florence Italy from the Renaissance period. Multiple Renaissance artists have exulted the very scene in antiquity. Thus the movie pose…👍🏽
My dad took me to see this in the theater when I was 4 or 5 years old and I've loved it ever since. Hamlin has some cool Jim Morrison vibes in this film
One of my favorites ever. Movie wouldn't have been the same without Sir Laurence Olivier, Perseus looking like Jim Morrison twin and Andromeda was so fuck1ng hot 🔥 and that old school stop motion is 100/100
My mom raised me on all the Harryhausen movies, and all the campy fun movies. She wanted me to have a deep appreciation for adventure movies. I think she's the main reason I enjoy RPGs like D&D to this day.
'Clash of the Titans' and 'The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad' were two of my childhood favorites and I still love them today. These movies bring the words 'movie magic' to life like no others and their essence continues to shine through even now.
This movie was a favorite of my father. It amazed and frightened me so much when I was young. It still amazes me, but luckily, Calibos has left my nighmares for good. I will never get tired of this film
This movie remains uniquely special in my middle aged heart. And this video is a love letter that the movie deserves. I also still have broken tail Calibos, and Perseus. I wish that I had kept the Kraken and not lost track of Charron. All the ingredients of the mythology and Harryhausen’s craft and the actors and all of it are outstanding. As for my personal movie night experience, my mom had won our family the tickets off of Chicago radio station, WGN. And the movie played at the Nortown theatre, long since torn down. It was a beautiful 1920s movie house. Every aspect of clash of the titans was and is magical.
I don't remember this much from when it came out, but from these clips, it looks like we're seeing stop-motion at its finest, and it must make an amazing visual experience. I believe we've truly lost something in the decades since.
I remember seeing this in the cinema, as I had developed a love of Greek Mythology. I loved the film and have always been in awe of Ray Harryhausens work. I even bought the graphic novel adaptation of the film the same year. Wish I knew what had happened to it.
This film is one of my childhood favorites. I was scared of Calbos and absolutely terrified of Medusa. To this day her scene is one the most chilling and suspense filled works of cinema. Clash of the Titans holds up well today. The Medusa segment still give me chills. The 2010 remake CGI creatures don't come close to the horror the 1981 stop motion creatures give me. It's sad that Jurassic Park killed off stop motion in 1993. It has become a novelty and no longer considered a top shelf Hollywood special effects method.
I just love this movie to no end. I even liked the liberties they took with the original myth to make a more contained and easy to follow. Every actor fit their role so well and Harryhausen's work was epic.
Still absolutely adore this film! Think it has such a nice blend of innocence, elegant dialogue delivered with authority and of course truly tremendous VFX❤ Surprisingly the book-of-the-film adaptation is actually pretty good too, you should read it if you’ve not already
One of my fondest childhood memories will always be my father taking me to the movie theater to see "Clash of the Titans". Forty-three years later, I still love the movie.
The gentleman that played Calibos is buried in the town of Fordingbridge, Hampshire here in the UK, it is a few miles north of where I live. I was lucky enough to meet and get the Autograph of Ray Harryhausen a few years before he passed away. And FYI, Sian Phillips' first name is pronounced "Sharn" Great video, keep em coming!
This movie was a masterpiece. I was born in ‘86 and I saw it when I was like 4 or 5 and it scared the hell outta me but the animation and effects imo will never get old. It’s just perfection!
I laughed at that scene where Cassiopeia is officiating Andromeda's and Perseus' wedding and says that marriage or something or other is even more beautiful than Thetis herself, and Thetis gets PISSED and her statue's head starts talking mad smack, lol.
That was the real clash of the Titans: the Titans of stage and screen. Olivier, Smith, Hamlin, Burgess vs Harryhausen. I recently watched this movie and fell in love with it again.
This film is one of my all time favorite favorite favorite films of all time!! I was 11 when it came out and I lived it every single day that summer! I did TONS of chores so that I would have money to get on the bus and ride into town and pay for my ticket to watch the film over and over! And when I didn’t have enough, I would sneak in just to watch it for the 40th time!! My favorite part is the Medusa sequence. It creeped me the hell out and fascinated me all at the same time! I couldn’t look away but was freaked out as well!! And after being beheaded, I couldn’t get over her body tipping over and leaking spaghetti sauce!!! Ray Harryhousin is a genius!!
I grew up on this show. Seen it over 100 times. Can quote lines and scenes verbatim. The 8 year old me, played Perseus, Medusa, even the Scorpions. Though it has not aged well, there is still magic in this film. Thanks for the video. And it's time for another rewatch.
My favorite movie from my childhood. But the skeleton Ferryman in the River Styx crossing scene gave me nightmares for years. I still watch this masterpiece once a year.
I remember seeing this at the movie when I was a kid and I remember everybody gasping in the movie theater when the goddess head fell off her statue in her eyes open up.
Does it still hold up today? HELL yeah it does. Ray Harryhausen's effects, Laurence Oliver's performance as Zeus and the INCREDIBLE film score by Laurence Rosenthal. Although I would've loved to have heard John Barry's film score before he was replaced by Rosenthal.
FYI this movie was released the same day as the great Raiders of the lost Ark back in 1981 ..... both are in my top 10 favorite movies of all time with Raiders being #1.
Igrew up in the 80s and I was 5 when this came out - but watched it many times as a boy. Titles like this and other Harryhausen films like the voyage of sinbad, etc were always so magical. The more recent remakes completely blew compared to these older works.
My family had this on tape or something mid 80’s when I was a kid. Used to watch it regularly. Even back then I remember being like 8-10 and being smitten with Judi Bowker.
What an excellent video on an exceptionally excellent film. I watched this and Jason and the Argonauts when I was a wee boy in the 80sI still remember that day. It was fantastic. Thanks.
None other than Ray Bradbury has gone on record saying that Medusa was his friend's best creation, and I can totally understand why, as the confrontation and slaying of Medusa is my favorite part of the film - atmospheric, suspenseful and with a beautifully designed and animated Gorgon that still chills!
I loved this movie. It came out a couple years after I was born. It got me into Ray Harryhausen. I used to love watching his movies. Back in the 80s they'd have them on Saturday afternoons all the time. A great time to have grown up.
This was one of many films from about 75 to 95 that I had the good fortune of viewing in some workprint form many weeks before its actual release. That is, these were pre-rating cuts that often had incomplete sound, editing, and effects, as well as temp soundtracks and no credits. The cut of TITANS I saw was about 80% complete. A few graphic scenes of violence were cut and Bowker's nude scene was toned down. I forget the tempt score, but I was thrilled to hear its actual score on opening night; the theatre where I viewed it sounded like a symphony orchestra was in the house. I was thrilled, too, to hear applause at the end from the audience. It is a truly beloved film.
In a word, Yes. It holds up very well. Far better actors and a much better soundtrack made a big difference. Of course, the stop motion was great, very effective for fantasy stories. In particular, the Medusa sequence is a classic. Still creepy after all these years. Sure, the mechano-owl was hokey but the kiddies needed something, too. (And he did deliver Medusa's head at the critical moment.) Great fun, with a sense of adventure that's totally absent in the cheesy remake
For the record, if you've ever spoken to Schwarzenegger in real life, his accent is so thick it's honestly difficult to tell what he's saying. He has to work REALLY hard to curb his accent for all his media interfaces. I used to work at Williams-Sonoma on the phone, and I spoke to a lot of actors and actresses. When he called... while I was practically begging my supervisor to take his call, you know, he was the sweetest guy. He bought a dish rack for his postman. I found that sickeningly sweet, almost. But, goddamn, I could barely understand anything he said.
Neil McCarthy really was great, bringing humanity to Calibos. And I remember seeing a Kraken in a toy store. I really wanted it although I was disappointed in the lower half. Kind of wish I had it now.
The Medusa Scenes are still intriguing after all this time. The remake couldn't come close to touching it imo. Also Bubo made a cameo in the 2010 remake.
He did make a brief cameo, for a lame one note joke that was basically making fun of how "silly" Bubo was. Bubo was awesome, and screw anyone who doesn't know that, I say! lol
I had the honour of meeting Ray Harryhausen back in 2002. He was receiving an honorary doctorate the same year I graduated from the film design course I’d been on. The impact of his work should never be overlooked; or forgotten.

I can't tell you how much I love this movie - I saw it as a little girl at the pictures & to this no matter what I may be doing, if it is on the television I will be there watching. It had everything & is a joy to watch. Thank you for covering this & hopefully bringing it to the attention of The masses- it really does deserve to be seen xXxXx 😊xXxXx N.B. I was born in April of 1980, with two I lder brothers,so this film was around a lot. I have very vivid memories of this and the creatures within. Especially Medusa. It still takes me back there. Brilliant.
I absolutely loved this movie as a kid! I was very disappointed in the remakes, I expected to see the original movie, but with updated visual affects, ended up getting a completely different story that just was not as good. Great job with this video!
I remember watching this on VHF/UHF when I was a kid. This film, Jason & the argonauts and other fantasy film similar to it, have always been my favorite. I was sad to see the mechanical owl left in a chest in the remake 😉
Ah! Clash of the Titans. The first movie I ever saw on the big screen at the tender young age of 6 (followed fairly closely by Raiders since I handed CotT so well). That was (still is!) a magical film. I had those toys (except the kraken which couldn't be found). This movie ignited my love of Greek mythology. The prologue and main theme (by Lawrence Rosenthal) is on my favorite movie music playlist. The 80s were a wonderful time to be a kid!
I'll admit that I'm not actually subscribed but your videos do come up for me now and again. I've seen a few things on this movie and Harryhausen's work. This has been a really fitting little video. This was made the same year I was born and I would still sit down and watch it start to finish and enjoy every second of this. I am a massive fan of fantasy and Sci-fi. I associate this and Jason and the Argonauts with the birth of my love for the genre. Thanks for the video.
My first time being a volunteer staffer at Dragon Con, due to my more mature and professional appearance, I was given the green room assignment, aka "the lounge for the guests". My greatest experience to this day was getting to meet Ray Harryhausen in person and talking to him for just a moment. Ray walked into the Green Room, looked around and said to me "The room's not green.." with just a tiny glint in his eye. One of my best friends has been a guest at every Dragon Con, has met several celebrities, and he's still jealous I got to meet Ray while he didn't.
As a kid, the Medusa section of the movie gave me nightmares. Masterfully done.
As a kid the scene where Caliban jumps out terrified me so much I smashed my hands together and exploded the half full large tub of popcorn.
Facts me too 😂 Medusa scared me too I thought I was the only one 😂😂
As a kid my parents had me watch this VHS in the 90s. The Medusa part rightfully scared me every time.
Same here! That scene is just about perfect! It scared me as a kid but as an adult who LOVES movies, I'm able to really appreciate the Amazing acting and direction. Stop motion may be laughed at these days but it still seems more real than the CGI S*** in the remake.

"LET LOOSE THE KRAKEN!" I still love Clash of the Titans. Even the age of Star Wars special effects, Ray Harryhausen's swan song was epic.

The movie is awesome precisely _because_ of the passionately hand-crafted practical "starwars age" effects!!! NOT _in spite_ of them. 😁

Burgess Merideth was always great. Criminally underrated actor.
Kept hoping he'd say something like "YER A BUM, PERSEUS! YA GOTTA EAT LIGHTNING AN' CRAP THUNDER!"
RIP, Ray Harryhausen. He brought to life out favorite monsters and heroes spanning over 30 years on the big screen, from 1949-1981.
he died at the right time. A guy like that that lived in such a golden era would be sick to his stomach living today.
He was truly a God among Men!

I was obsessed with Bubo when I was a kid
If you were a kid in the 80s, you wanted one of the following as a friend-Bubo, ET, R2d2, or Gizmo.
In high school band we had a slide whistle. We'd recreate Bubo's voice with it when playing around.
@@JnEricsonx Don’t forget Mac from Mac and Me. Lol
@@omizj6951 Didnt watch it.
This is still one of my favorite movies.
... Ray Harryhausen's art will never die !
Great video! One of my favorite movies of all time! I bought the Star Ace Bubo, too!!
Rewatched this recently with an edible. Really makes you view it different. Makes you see it like you’re watching a play
I can't tell you how much I love this movie - I saw it as a little girl at the pictures & to this no matter what I may be doing, if it is on the television I will be there watching. It had everything & is a joy to watch. Thank you for covering this & hopefully bringing it to the attention of The masses- it really does deserve to be seen xXxXx 😊xXxXx
N.B. I believe her name Sian is pronounced SH-AR-N
So many happy Sundays spent on the sofa watching this as a kid, with my old man. Classic film, great memories.
Absolutely. I own this and watch it every so often. It was magical, with great actors.
Such an amazing film and ray harryhausen work on the creatures remains one of my favorite movies of all time
I've watched this movie @ least 100 times...
One of my favourites ❤
I watch it every year 🤓
One of my favorite movies as growing up!! Still love it to this day!! The scene with Medusa was epic!!👍👍
The 80s was the best period of sci-fi movies following the roll that started Stanley Kubrick in the late 60s-70s,..
I remember seeing this as a kid in the theater. I was obsessed with anything sword and sorcery. I miss the 80s 😅😅
I love this movie and I used to have action figures of Perseus, Pegasus, Kalibos, and the giant Kraken, wish I had kept them.
When I was a kid I remember having a huge crush on the actress who played Andromeda ... beautiful girl.
Ditto. Judi Bowker may not have much of a filmography but oh boy she's one of the most beautiful actress I've ever seen on the silverscreen.
thank you for doing this one! One of my favorites! Saw it in the theaters multiple times as a kid
Ha! For the longest time I thought this was released in the 60’s! Kudos to how timeless it is
I remember watching this on VHF/UHF when I was a kid. This film, Jason & the argonauts and other fantasy film similar to it, have always been my favorite.
I was sad to see the mechanical owl left in a chest in the remake 😉
One of my all time favorite movies! Thanks for doing this video!
I know what I'm watching tonight 😎 one of my all time favourite film, its almost perfect. Unlike the awful remake
Went to see this at the cinema aged and absolutely loved it. Medusa was really cool…. For an 8 year old in 1981!!!
Such a fun movie growing up, and Stop Motion never gets old🤗
My first time being a volunteer staffer at Dragon Con, due to my more mature and professional appearance, I was given the green room assignment, aka "the lounge for the guests".
Anything with Judi Bowker gets my vote.
